So I’m watching football last week, and I notice myself rooting for teams that are either down in points that game, or not supposed to win. Do I have any attachment at all to those teams? Not at all, but if I am watching a game, I naturally root for one side, and more often than not, it will be the side of the underdog.
Is this latent programming from my A’s fan-ness? Am I doomed to root forever for the slow horse in the pony races, or the high school team against the professional one? Will the one time that the little engine that could—does—make up for all the other times that the spread is covered?
What do you think? If you had your chance, would you rather root for an underdog team that will win once in blue moon, or would you rather root for the team that has a chance to win it all, every single year?
And which of these scenarios best describes the Oakland A’s?
