Open Thread: A's Half Season and Home Run Derby

The A's first half is over and the team finishes at the same number of wins and losses. There were quite a few number of highlights and a number of lowlights.

The highlights included the three-run bomb that Scutaro hit off of Rivera, Jack Cust and his exploits, the improbable comeback off of Jonathan Papelbon and Eric Chavez proving that he can come up big.  And the A's starting pitching has been a highlight nearly all year long, which was in part rewarded today with Danny Haren being named the American League All Star starter.  Congratulations to Haren on a splendid accomplishment!  I just hope Haren comes back healthy.  That's my main concern.

Speaking of health, that was by far the lowlight of the year so far.  And now, it appears like Rich Harden may be gone for quite a while, if not the entire season.  So that ultimately means that Joe Kennedy and Lenny DiNardo will be a part of the A's rotation for quite a while longer depending on when Esteban Loaiza can make his way back.

Any way, I know a great many ANers are disappointed by the season thus far, but I do believe that this team has been successful by remaining near the .500 mark.  Just think where they would've been had the starting pitching not been as remarkable as it is now.

This is also a thread where ANers can make their bold predictions about the home run derby tonight.  Last season I thought it would come down to David Ortiz and Ryan Howard and my final prediction was Ryan Howard.  I'm going to say that Cecil's son is going to take the crown tonight, but it also wouldn't surprise me to see a Howard repeat.  Who is your pick?

they are about where I thought they would be...

I thought 84-85 wins would be where the a's would finish and that was hoping Piazza and Bradley would be the heart of our order and having a healthy Rich Harden.

To say this team is .500 with those 3 guys producing nothing, I'd say I'm very happy with what the team has done.

I think it's safe to say we won't be making the playoffs this year because frankly, we just aren't as good as the other teams in the AL.

Bob Geren has done a pretty good job with what he has been dealt and I would really like to see us be creative at the trade deadline to help the 2008 season look more promising. We have a few good parts to work with but I think Beane needs to do alot of work to get us back with the AL pack next year.

My biggest dissapointment of the 2007 season so far has actually been Nick Swisher. I really thought he would come out and have a tremendous season but for whatever reason I feel he has taken a step back at the plate this year.

That's it for me...I'd liek to see this team get on a streak and make a run at the postseason but I wont get my hopes up.

Halos Heaven is like the war on terror...it's a joke.

With Harden gone
We are done.  We simply need another dominant arm in the rotation to even think about making up ground on Seattle and Anaheim.  The offense looks a little better with Cust, and Swisher will get hot again, but it's still below league average.  The bullpen will be better with Street back.  However, we'd have to win 95 games in my estimation to make the playoffs, meaning we'd need a ridiculous hot streak to post a record of 51-23 in the 2nd half.  Not gonna happen with this lineup and rotation.

AL West

I think the division will be won with less than 95 wins (but probably more than 90).

I expect both Anaheim and Seattle to be weaker in the second half than they were in the first, though probably not by enough for us to catch them. Even so, I don't think the A's will be eliminated from contention before the final week.

I expect Beane will make low-profile trades for minor upgrades in the lineup and/or bullpen. That plus some returns from injury will help a little bit, and as usual we'll be better in the 2nd half than in the 1st (though not as dramatically as in some past years). I see us finishing somewhere around 89 wins.

I see no changes in the starting rotation (except perhaps to unload Kennedy); we'll muddle through with no decent 5th starter until Loaiza becomes available.

with all the injuries

so far we're doing well.  i still think we win 85 - 90 games and probably pass the m's and finish in 2nd.  with the tigers, indians, bosox and angels though, that is not going to get it done this year.

oh, and i think vlad is gonna win the derby.

by Backspin on Jul 9, 2007 2:44 PM PDT   0 recs

good call on Vlad...

Probably right on this year's team, as well.  I had higher hopes, but unless Billy has a trade-deadline miracle (which I still don't exclude from the realm of possibility), it is gonna be very tough to make the playoffs.  That said, the Halos have been slumping.  They are not as good as their first-half record suggests.  And, neither are the M's (despite what Goose thinks).

Season ain't done and neither are the A's.

halos had

that insane stretch where the could not lose, but that is still a very solid team. they could win 95 games i think.  but no way the season is over, a's could do something crazy like go 58-17 in the 2nd half again.

and i just had a feeling on vlad - wasn't looking good until big papi brought out the special bat.  vlad sort of built for a derby - he has touble with legit high in side, but other than that there is no pitch he can't launch high and way gone to left and left center.  even if he plays for a rival, i always love watching vlad hit.

Wow

Cecil Fielder was a huge (in more ways than one) star in the early 90's for the Tigers.  Pretty much their only bright spot.  He hit 50 homers in one season (the 50th coming at Yankee stadium), at a time when it hadn't been done in a long time.  In other words, before the whole "steroids thing."
Prince (his son, not the artist formerlly known as and currently known as) used to take BP before daddy did, and actually hit a few home runs in Tiger Stadium as a 12 year old.  Back then he was pretty much as round as he was tall, but he could hit a ball a mile.
He seems to have grown up a bit, eh?  He's certainly exceeded his dad's career, and they've had a falling out.  They haven't spoken in three years.

I pay no attention to NL

I'd heard the name "Prince Fielder" and I was pretty sure he was a hitter and not a pitcher, but I couldn't have told you what team he plays for.

Still couldn't, come to think of it. Atlanta? Milwaukee?

Milwaukee's first baseman

Sorry, I meant "wow" as a reaction to the memories "Cecil's son" brought back.
On the other hand, there's some good baseball going on in the NL.  It's worth a look.

by IndianaAsfan on Jul 9, 2007 7:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well

Cecil was never this good this young.  I guess I'm factoring in Prince's age and projecting his career as if he'll continue this production.  So "exceeded" was probably a poor choice of words.  Then again, Cecil was never a high average guy, nor was he a clubhouse leader, which Prince is acknowledged to be.

Jack Cust and Cecil Fielder

A few weeks ago I was trying to find a comparison to Cust, someone who seemed to come out of nowhere as a full-fledged power hitter, and the person I came up with was Fielder.

He'd been a struggling prospect with minimal power for a couple of years, split to Japan and had a monster season there, came back and just took off with 50 homers for Detroit. Wound up having a pretty good career. Main difference between Fielder and Cust is that Fielder was two years younger than Cust, 26, that year he came back to the states.

by richwol on Jul 9, 2007 11:39 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Please...

Fielder did not "come out of nowhere."  If I didn't pick Ryan, I picked Fielder as NL MVP this year.  Can't remember.

Don't think I picked him as my NL ROY last year.  I think I went with Zimmerman.  But, Fielder was definitely a close second.

A difficult poll to vote on

The A's are performing below my preseason expectations, however, knowing now what I did not know before the season with regards to injuries, they are performing way above their heads...even with the frequent runs of bad offense.

If I told you the A's would have used the DL x number of times by the All Star break and the names of the people going on the DL (Harden, Loaiza, Street, Duke...), would you honestly expect a > .500 team?

by easyraider on Jul 9, 2007 3:04 PM PDT   0 recs

if Harden is done

then i'd prefer bringing up Meyer or Madsen for a few starts rather than trotting out Kennedy. Kennedy really isnt a good starting pitcher and even if he turns in a quality start its by playing houdini with a weak opposition.

by oak1 on Jul 9, 2007 3:07 PM PDT   0 recs

Agreed.
So it goes.

by jeepers on Jul 9, 2007 4:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Meyer isn't an option in my book. If anything

he's going to be shut down soon - he hasn't pitched in two years and his arm is going to be fried. He's also not fully found his control yet - one for next year methinks.

Madsen should stay in AAA too - there's absolutely no need to rush these guys and harm their development. He's only just shown that he can pitch at a high, let's see if he can continue it for the rest of the minor league season. If he does then perhaps he gets a shot in ST.

It's not like we're one pitcher away from competing here. The rotation is not the problem.

interesting yr so far

back in the winter beane and his staff rolled the dice hoping that guys with extensive past medical histories can stay healthy and win games. this approach has not yet been successful. the a's lead the league in almost all categories in DL used and man time lost due to injury. this is not the a's medical staff's problem-they can only deal with what is given to them. but now beane has snookered himself. one example is paying pizza-man 8 million dollars to play this stupid charade of being a ML catcher while paying cust the minimum. beane should release or trade the pizza-man and not try to make us believe the guy can actually throw the baseball anywhere near the mound-never mind toward 2nd base. the guy was a shitty catcher to begin with but now witht he bum shoulder even the pizza-man must be shaking his head about beane's decision making abilities.

anyway, i still like this team. is there some dead wood rotting? you bet. i think beane needs to make a decision soon on kendell. trade him or bench him and let suzuki play. i think beane needs to make a decision on crosby. i must say crosby is the most overrated MLB player in game today. the dude is a bust and he'ii never amount to anything more then what we see today. the fuckin' guy is a disappointing pout machine. time to cut our losses and be done with him and move on. i'd rather watch scoot play SS then to sit through another game with crosby in GandG with that pout on his face.

this team might make a late push for the WC but it's doubtful. they certainly won't catch the angels; and seattle is where the a's were 1-2 months ago-playing way over their heads. seattle will start sucking the big hard one soon too-they just don't know it yet. but beane has the nucleus of a very good team. i think after july 31 it will be very exciting time to watch the 2008 a's.

On days like these I really miss "oaktoon".

For the first hour...

I like the Home Run Derby, but there's no way it should be taking 2 1/2 to 3 hours.  The players get tired, and the thrill factor melts away.

Oh, and FreeSeatUpgrade's assessment of Chris Berman kind of hits the nail, too (although I can tolerate it a tiny bit more).

"Former Huntsville Star Eric Chavez..."

by FormerHuntsvilleStar on Jul 9, 2007 7:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'll never go back back back back back

Until the grating nails of Chris Berman are removed from the ESPN chalkboard, I'll "Tell it Goodbye!" when it comes to the HR contest.  His horribly strained, hackneyed back-back-back call is hard enough to hear even once, in a real game.  To hear it over and over and over again during the HR contest is a Sisyphian punishment, reserved only for the truly damned.  Never again.

As for the A's, well, I was in the pessimist brigade back in March, and in that sense they've exceeded my expectations.  Sadly, I expect more struggles in teh second half and a September spent wholly out of contention...and maybe a good chunk of August as well.

I'm ok with where we are

Of course I'd like us to be better, but considering all the guys on the DL we are doing pretty good.

One bright spot you missed is Travis Buck.  The guy has been having an outstanding year and is also a fun player to watch.  It is great seeing him develop, he will be a force to be reckoned with for some time.

Disappointed

Was thinking of writing something upbeat and optimistic...but couldn't. I know this year was a crapshoot--banking on players with histories of injury, personality problems, arm issues. It all could have come together--I believe that--but, it hasn't. I fear for the first time since the '90's the second half will be without a race of any kind for our A's.

I like Vlad tonight. Heard him on XM and he's bringing the Angels BP pitcher--and they've been practicing.

This is a game to be savored, not gulped. There's time to discuss everything between pitches or between innings. Bill Veeck

First half about right.

Combine the best pitching in the league with the worst hitting, and get a .500 ballclub?  Looks about right to me.

I'm hoping the A's have some serious bats in the pipeline for 09-10.  Right now, the A's don't have a single elite offensive player, nor do they have anyone with the possible exception of Buck who looks like they'll ever be one.  We're going to have a lot of 85-90 win ballclubs if that doesn't change.

So it goes.

by jeepers on Jul 9, 2007 4:50 PM PDT   0 recs

Buck, Swisher, Barton, and Cust.

They're all going to have pretty good careers methinks. The rest, not so much.

by OldhamA on Jul 9, 2007 4:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

We have plenty of "pretty good."

"Elite" is what we don't have.

Swisher will be a career .260-.270 hitter, who picks up a bunch of walks and hits you 30 homers.  Good enough to make an All-Star team or two, but not good enough for the Hall of Fame, and never a guy you're afraid to throw a pitch.

Buck, maybe, because he shows the ability to hit the ball where it's pitched, and swings under control, but it's too still early to tell.  Not to mention, he currently looks like the next Milton Bradley--tons of talent, never healthy enough to use it.

Barton could be an elite hitter.  He's part of that pipeline I want, hopefully.

Cust certainly has elite power, and he's actually a much better overall hitter than I expected.  But he's very old, and I wonder if he'll be able to turn into David Ortiz.  Otherwise, he's not elite.

So it goes.

by jeepers on Jul 9, 2007 5:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

How is he "never" healthy?

This is his first trip to the DL, and even that would have been avoided if Larry Davis took his thumb out of his ass long enough to let Buck try Swisher's thumb guard.
Bradley, on the other hand has spent significant amounts of time on the DL, and two of the last three times coming off played ONE game before going back on.  They aren't even close.

by IndianaAsfan on Jul 9, 2007 7:40 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

He missed most of last year

with a sports hernia, too, and has fought wrist and leg issues this year as well.  Because of the A's quizzical policy of letting players miss 10 games at a time without disabling him, he's probably avoided another DL stint.

So it goes.

by jeepers on Jul 9, 2007 9:03 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Disappointed, but

I had higher expectations based on better health.  If anyone had said in the preseason that we'd break our own record of usage by the ASB, I would've predicted we'd be about 10 games under.  In retrospect, we've done better than could be expected given the circumstances.

No Loaiza all 1st half?!  Bradley gone most of the 1st half?!  Harden, Street and Duke missing huge chunks?!  How exactly in the name of smoke and mirrors did we get lucky enough to get here at .500?
