Gaudin + Flores + Casilla – Jairo + Marshall + Calero + Embree > Santana
First of all, this was a big win for the A’s, for many reasons. They beat one of the best pitchers in baseball, they handed Gaudin another win (improving him to 6-1), they earned a series win, they kept pace with the Angels, and they built a little bit of momentum for the imposing series against the Red Sox tomorrow.
The tale of the first inning set the tone for today’s game. The Twins had a runner on third with one out, and although conventional baseball wisdom says that you don’t walk Cuddyer to face Morneau, that’s exactly what happened...and it worked. Gaudin got the big DP, and the A’s came up to bat without being down a run.
I noticed the combo of Ellis/Swisher at 2/3 in the lineup today, and liked it from the start. I liked it even more in the first when Ellis doubled and Swisher drove him in. Although the A’s threatened in the same inning with the bases loaded and one out, thanks to walks to Johnson and Chavez (very unusual for Santana), Crosby, in true A’s style, hit into a double play.
Gaudin fought out of another jam in the third, and after Shannon Stewart collected career hit number 1,500 (Congratulations, Shannon!), Swisher had an amazing at bat, taking an 0-2 count full, then laying off a 3-2 curve to get the walk. Dan Johnson followed with another walk, and the A’s found themselves with the bases loaded with one out again--this time with Chavez at the plate. But to everyone’s delight and surprise, Chavez absolutely smoked a pitch that was just about over his head to center field for the sacrifice fly and the A’s collected another run.
But then something unusual, unexpected, and that usually happens to us, not for us happened with Crosby’s at-bat. After being badly fooled on the first couple of pitches, Crosby hit the ball deep in the hole for a hit and an RBI, but after a costly throwing error, found himself on third base. Swisher and Johnson both scored on the play, staking the A’s to an unbelievable 4-0 lead on Santana.
However, instead of being grateful for this offensive boon, Gaudin found himself in another jam in the fourth, with runners at first and second with one out. A ball was hit straight to Bobby Crosby, and instead of catching it, he calmly backed up, took it on the short hop, and ended up with an inning-ending double play. Brilliant baseball play, and it was more instinct than anything else, something that has seemed to be absent from Crosby’s baseball arsenal. Very nice to see.
Call it pitching during the day (Gaudin says he much prefers pitching at night), call it a case of not ever having seen a lead as big; call it whatever you want, but Gaudin was less than sharp today, struggling through 5+ innings, and allowing two earned runs, including his first homerun in ten starts.
For the record, I would have pulled Gaudin after the fifth; he was really struggling, but I guess Geren (and probably correctly) figured that a struggling Gaudin is better than the current A’s bullpen. But after giving up a solo homerun and a single in the sixth, while failing to record an out, Gaudin was pulled, leaving Flores to mop up. He got two outs, but after giving up a walk to put runners at first and second, he was pulled in favor of Jairo Garcia, now known as Santiago Casilla. Jairo struggled all over the place at the major league level; could Casilla be any better?
So far, that answer is a resounding ‘yes’. Casilla faced four batters in his inning and a third, and struck out three of them. He was filthy today, and got the A’s to the eighth with a lead, making him my player of the game.
The A’s threatened again in their half of the seventh, but Dan Johnson flied out with the bases loaded to end the inning. Geren played a rousing game of musical pitchers in the eighth by assigning a personal pitcher to each batter, but Marshall, Calero and Embree did their jobs. Embree came back out for the ninth, and did his best closer imitation, by throwing continuous strikes to get the final three outs.
Overall, big win for the A’s, against a very tough pitcher.
Miscellaneous notes:
Yes, Jack Cust struck out a million (approx) times today, but this can really be explained in two words: Johan. Santana. That is all.
Witasick DFA’d today, The man formerly known as Jairo Garcia, now known as Santiago Casilla, has been brought up, which, if you saw the game, you already know.
The Stupid Angels win again today, so no ground gained.
Boston comes into town late, late tonight and will take on the A’s in a four game series this week, starting tomorrow night. Batten down the hatches, and make sure to keep meds on hand. It’s going to be a wild series. Our pitching needs to be at the top of their game, since they are facing the best of the best.

No joke
SO glad.
A note on Casilla
I've been following him all year down in AAA and the story is really very simple: He's either really good or you pray for a rain out.
Today was a good day.
Good thing...
...he got us the win.
on the surface
Casilla appears to be a younger Witasick. Excellent stuff but suffers from periodic control problems. I like this move though. Casilla's ceiling is higher and Witasick really had two years to establish himself in the A's bullpen but never really progressed beyond a mop-up role. With Street and Duke sidelined for a while, Gaudin in the rotation and Calero inconsistent, we really needed a power arm and Casilla gives us that option.

Seems counterintuitive
but I think it's a good sign that Chavez has rediscovered his old love of the adams apple-high pitch. Back in his heyday Chavvy would hit a lot of those balls well out of the strike zone with that lumberjack-style swing. Last year and a half, not so much. I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that the fact he's chasing high pitches again might suggest he's feeling a little better.
is it two days later yet?
Agreed on the assessment.
This series could be a preview
to the ALCS. If our guys can take a split with the Red Sox they will show that they have the moxie to heat up and take the west from the Angels. But they really need to step up the next four days. A two game split will be a resounding success.
"Resounding success" =
3 wins. 2 wins = A Success. IMHO.
I won't get excited if they
I agree that 500 should not be a long term goal.
But I do think that this team, as currently constituted, would be overachieving if they can split a four game set with the hottest hand in baseball. You're absolutely correct that they are going to have to step it up to make a deep run in the playoffs, but hey, if we are going to think big, let's pull for a four game sweep...by our guys that is.
The A's are currently in third place
can we at least get ahead of Seattle before the ALCS gets mentioned?
by IndianaAsfan on Jun 3, 2007 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions
Seattle's only a game ahead of us.
We could be tied tomorrow.
The fact remains
we're in third place, and some are already previewing the AL CHAMPIONSHIP series. It's way too early for that, tied with Seattle for second or in third a game back. IMO, it's too early to be talking playoffs at all.

I don't think your being intentionally abrasive..
so I will proceed on that note. What I said was that this could be a PRELUDE to the ALCS. There is a lot that is going to have to go our way between now and October for that statement to be accurate. But does anyone doubt that Boston is the front runner for the ALCS at this point in time? IF, (and it's a big IF) we can put our original lineup on the field and on the rubber, we have a remarkably good fighting chance at the pennant. This series could be a peek at what October may look like if we do pull it off. Besides, it's always fun to look at the playoffs when they are four months away. Even the Devil Rays can dream....after all, they are tied with the Yankee's.
I don't doubt that the Red Sox
are the front runner. But how is my question abrasive at all? It is a legitimate question - the A's are in third place, and,IMO, it is jumping the gun quite a bit to even talk playoffs for the A's right now, let alone the championship series. My statement was I'd like to see the A's only have to jump one team (as opposed to both Seattle and Anaheim) before we conclude they will make the playoffs and win a series to get to the ALCS. You are correct in that I wasn't intentionally being abrasive. In fact, I think any inference of abrasiveness on your part is an over-reaction. It is a legitimate question.
by IndianaAsfan on Jun 3, 2007 9:11 PM PDT up reply actions
That's why I put the qualifier out there.
I wasn't totally sure if you were engaging in sarcasm. You've always been a pretty decent poster as far as I'm concerned. And your right, it is a pretty fair question.
I think we all know the playoffs are a long way away, and it's baseball after all, anything can happen between now and October. Hell, the Devil Rays might be justified in their unbridled enthusiasm about being tied with the Yanks. You will have to allow me my nervous anticipation of the upcoming series and my feeble attempts to put a positive spin on it.
So if I overreacted, you have my apology. One of the nice things about the internet is that at least it's bloodless and relatively pain free as far as miscommunication goes!
quality at bats
I know it sounds kind of silly, but we did seem to post quite a few quality at bats today. We smoked at lot of balls off a great pitcher. Have years of watching a futile offense made me delusional, or have I lowered my expectations to a realistic level? Great win any how you look at.
Cust appreciates your support
But Santana only had 4 K's today, and 3 of them were Cust. Cust now has an even 100 plate appearances with 35 K's. The strikeouts are a huge part of who Cust is, regardless of who the opposing pitcher might me.
this was not one of Santana's better starts
by the way, in other DFA news, Bocachica homered for San Diego today. I hope things work out for him there.
i wonder
if we could have packaged Boca and Witasick for some much needed minor league pitching depth. They really didnt have much trade value but still its hard to give up assets and get nothing in return.
by oak1 on Jun 3, 2007 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree
if Cust hadn't been striking out before today, I'd concede that today's were due to Santana. But Cust is an equal opportunity strike out hitter - he doesn't care who is pitching.
by IndianaAsfan on Jun 3, 2007 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions
Cust is an ideal hitter for this A's team
With runners on base you want a guy like Cust at bat. Extra base hit, walk or strike out is exactly what you want. What we don't want are those effing double plays.
Jack Cust for president.

Today was about the first time
I don't care how many think otherwise, I think the tendinitis IS a big factor in his poor hitting and that if healthy he could heat up and prove worthy of the #5 hole June-Sept. Even if so, the question is whether this is the start of him being pain-free or just a good week.
Also, I thought Geren's use of the bullpen was outstanding. He got Marshall in against a lefty, kept him in because a lefty was on deck at the time, got Calero in against a righty, got Castillo up against a LHP, and got a well-rested Embree in position for a 4-out save. Well done.
Great wrap-up, baseballgirl
I enjoy your write-ups of the game much better than the pedestrian wrap-ups on mlb.com.
Not to mention, the ones here
I want to clarify my flippant comment (first thread) that the Angels are going to win the division and the A's are going to be competing for the Wild Card I don't mean that anyone should give up on the division; how would that help anyway? And if Vlad goes down, suddenly I'll change my tune--so at the very least you play the games and see if that happens.
What I do mean is that I think the Angels are better than any of the WC contenders and that I think they will--but the WC teams may not--set a standard the A's can't match with Harden, Loaiza, Duke, and Street out sans timetable. We probably won't see any of those guys in June, maybe not before the ASB.
What the A's are doing right now is remarkable and I can see them staying competitive enough to make a run, eventually, at the WC. But the Angels are a solid team, IMO, and they aren't playing as far over their head as it seems. I could see them playing .600 ball all season, but I can't see these A's getting there; it just doesn't look like they'll have enough key pitchers back healthy soon enough.
at the moment they have the third highest
W/L percentage in the majors. They may not play to that level for the whole season, of course, but even with key injuries they are one of the top teams in baseball.
And they look it--
Unfortunately,
I couldn't agree more.
I have to admit,
that the truth in your observations of the Angels prowess frighten me to no end. I loathe the Angels and blame them for all manner of evil in the world. Global warming, the Angels are to blame. Typhoid and Dysentary, world hunger, third world economics, all can be placed at the foot of the Arte Moreno and his minions.
But 666 ball from here to the end of the season? Their pitching is good, if not great. But the only one that causes fear and loathing when on the hill is Lackey. If Vlad stumbles, I think the Angels will tumble down to 500, which puts them in our neighborhood. I just hope and pray that we start catching a few breaks from the lords of baseball. It would be nice to have them watch our green ass for a change.
I keep thinking of the Tigers and their late season collapse. They led the division everyday last season...except for the one day that counted. The last one.
But the realist in me forces me to recognize the sage words you have typed. We need our pitching to step up even more than they already have, especially our bullpen. I'm not even goint to mention what passes for hitters on our squad. Your comments hit hard, but only because they have the ring of truth. Here's to hoping fortune smiles on the A's for a change.
A's win!
Amidst all the struggles and injuries of other guys, Ellis has had a pretty bad year without much notice. He had a good game yesterday and four great ABs today. I think he might start to turn it around.
I'm feeling a streak...
the A's are due! Red Sox, Magenta Sox, or Maroon Sox, whatever, bring em on!
I wouldn't be surprised if
is that a bold prediction to write down?
(adding to note book now, hope I don't have to point this out if things go bad on us.)
I'm listening to the Skanks-Sux game
I'm rooting for the Skanks to make the Sux work hard, get into their bullpen.
radio announcers just said the A's have the best pitching in the American League (based on ERA). they complimented Geren, and said that despite injuries "the A's just find a way to get it done."
They do find a way to get it done...
about half the time.
Just read the game thread....
Love the Stomperlinks!
Haha
classic Joe Morgan statement of his wins theory.
Did you hear him use Eckstein to defend A-rod?
Priceless.
yeah...
I sort of feel guilty for watching this game.
We're rooting for Boston to be very very tired.
That's my justification.
ya
let's hope it goes 14 innings
That would be a fun cross-country flight afterwards
With a rain delay in the middle!
by FreeSeatUpgrade on Jun 3, 2007 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions
Funny that you mention that
Boston radar shows rain rapidly approaching from the south.
Man, it is fun watching the Yankees fall apart this year.
Yeah...I'm not gonna root for the Yankees
or anything, but it would be nice to hand the Red Sox some demoralization before the 4-game series. Doesn't look like it's gonna happen though...so maybe the Yankees can just keep pace with them all night and they'll have no energy tomorrow. Here's to extra innings!
Most demoralizing outcome
Call the game in the 8th inning, tie score.
Now, fellas, be sure to take your
melatonin before you nod off on the jet this evening or tomorrow morning, whatever.
All his belly achin' about poor baseball ...
... players being unused to off-field attention. Who(m) does he think he's kidding? Sounds like a guy who's gotten caught at it in his own past.
He really oughta be grateful that being a baseball player can get you hired for jobs despite a complete absence of any discernible skills.

he has a nice voice....
I might take him over Vince...
Speaking of: I love listening to the postgame highlight package, and I would implore the A's to score during Korach's innings.
The A's obviously agree,
Ah-bray-hoo's
fielding gaff seems the norm for him lately.
Strange how Abreu has seemed
Bond's is a clank in the OF too
Saw some bits of his d, and god, he is DH material.
(in the Cust-zone.)
Given. Makes Abreu more pathetic
Bond's OF negative might be larger than many realize tho.
oh, I agree with you
but Bonds was a good outfielder for many years. I think it's not really much of a criticism of him at this stage that he's now defensively below average. (I can think of a few players who are a lot younger who look pretty bad out there, too).
comment on pinstripe alley
about Abreu, something like he should "loose some weight and grow some balls".... while missing Shef.
Perhaps the Yankees figured
that of the two, Abreu was the one they could control.

LET'S GO EX-TRA-INN-INGS!
As many as possible boys. Take this thing deep into the night, and use as many pitchers as possible.
Agreed...tire them out as much as possible
That play by Abreu
was an example of abysmal defense looking good.
Great catch ... wow
So far so great for the A's--
Wow--great play by the Greek God of digging out screaming liners.
Maybe the Sox
will all get pneumonia from damp jersies. Might not be a bad recipe for their fans, either...
Wow
Wow...didn't see that Arod homer coming
Jeter would have hit a double-HR.
I can only hope Jeter boots a critical grounder
in the bottom of the ninth, and have the NY media somehow blame it on A-Rod.
Not over yet...
...Ramirez and Ortiz looming for the Sox.
Gooooooo extra innings!
Yeah!
Hey, BBG, did you send the AN Day tix yet? I haven't gotten anything and I'm moving soon!
They will be mailed this week
I can get yours out tomorrow. Is that soon enough?
Yes, awesome!
Thanks for understanding. You're the best.
(I guess it's an open secret now.)
meh
I've met some AN people. They're all losers.
Oh, I don't care about ANers.
ArakSOT and I saw it.
It was so magnificent, we had to avert our eyes. We also saw Ryan Langerhans, the false idol.
I will weep like ArakSOT
if Stewart plays over Doyle.
No thanks
