ANers, Step Up to Interview Bob Geren
Yes, you read that right. This will be a first for Athletics Nation. The chance for ANers to collectively interview the A’s manager during the season.
A’s manager Bob Geren has agreed to an interview with me and I’m turning to Athletics Nation to get that interview done. I’m opening up this thread for ANers to submit questions for Mr. Geren. Here is your chance to ask the A’s manager about your green and gold.
There is a caveat. I can only submit 15 questions so I’m going to have to select the best 15 questions. I would suggest you only submit the best question in your mind rather than throwing a bunch up there, but that’s up to you.
Submit your questions below and I’ll get them to Mr. Geren. The interview with the A’s manager will appear soon after that.
So what are you still reading for? Submit away!!!

OK I'll be the class ass.
Mr Geren,
With the struggles of your offense, and all the injuries, how long can you continue to play Kendall 6 times a week. Wouldn't the offense with Melhuse be beneficial, with a somewhat veteran staff.

Kendall poll
There are a lot of questions centered on how could(where/when/why/please no/what) Jason Kendall be playing. My qestion is thus:
Mr. Geren, athletics nation has conducted a poll (poll put Diary section Fri night) we have found Jason Kendall worthy/unworthy of starting by a % to % ratio. Will you take Athlitics Nation's advice on this matter?
What advice would you give an orginization like Athletics Nation on how to get the A's to listen seriously?
The poll reads:
Should Jason Kendall be the starter at this point in the season?
YES NO
by Hawaii FO on May 25, 2007 9:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
my prettified version
I've noticed that Kendall's bat seems to have a bit more authority after sitting out a game or two. Although I realize he wants to play every game, and the pitchers seem to prefer him behind the plate, is it possible to mandate that Kendall not start at least one game per week? It also would help Melhuse stay sharper to play at least one game a week, plus help the pitchers get accustomed to some other catcher calling the game.

my question
Dear Mr Geren
I've noticed that Jay Marshall is being asked to get a lot of right handed batters out even though he was mainly known for his success against left handed hitters.
Do you see him as more than just a left handed specialist?
by J Rod on May 24, 2007 9:40 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
...
Why do you see Marshall more than a LOOGY in his rookie season, especially when his MiLB & MLB stats say otherwise?
by Colorado Fan on May 24, 2007 2:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Marshall has been more of neccesity, than
anything else. Geren knows he is a Loogy, but can pitch more often, and about as good as his other options right now.

My Question
Mr. Geren -
The A's this year have been racked by injuries, obviously making your job of finding a good lineup each day more difficult. Do you think this is simply a string of bad luck, or is there some outside explanation (the front office having to obtain players who are more injury-prone, problems with training, etc)?
Thanks!

OK
Mr. Geren,
Are you going to steal more this year? Ok just kidding, here's my real question.
I know that baseball is known for having supersticious players, do you have any yourself? Should you figure some out? Has the Rally Monkey gone into hiding with some pins and a voodoo doll?
by niallmack on May 24, 2007 9:57 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
One question that has a few parts....
Coach Geren,
Chad Gaudin has clearly been one of the saviors on this team. Many here thought he should have been competing for the 5th starter spot right away during Spring Training. Why didn't he? How much of it had to do with increasing Joe Kennedy's value as a potential free agent or trading chip? Also, if/when Esteban Loaiza and Harden come back, would Gaudin be the immediate choice to return to the bullpen?

I'll tackle the elephant in the room.
Eric Chavez, right now, is a shadow of his former self.
Yes, he's got sore forearms. Yes, he's had a shoulder issue for several years that he won't get off-season surgery to fix. Yes, he has no protection in the lineup.
Yes, he's defensive nirvana, but .240 with 5 HRs is what you'd expect from Scutaro if he'd been playing third base all year, not the offensive lynchpin of the team.
Doesn't there come a point where you say, "Eric, we love you and all, you're a clubhouse captain, but you have to sit down until your arms are 100%"?

more when it's more humid/raining. It messes with the joints/muscles causing them to be tighter. I can generally tell when I wake up the likelihood it will rain depending on how much pain I'm in. Given the state of the team's health, perhaps the A's could use the "Americans with Disabilities" act to force MLB to let them play the rest of their games at home.

Injuries and Chemistry
Mr. Garen, with so many simultaneous injuries to key players on this team, as a new manager, how difficult is it to maintain, or build upon the chemistry that these A's are famous for? Who is stepping up in the absence of guys like Kotsay and Bradley? How is this coaching staff weathering the storm?

A couple of peoople here
already touched on my question.
I want to know about Chavy and his forearm problems. It's a lingering injury that looks to be a repeat of last season for him. If that turns out to be the case, would you consider moving him down in the batting order?
Also, with the struggles and injuries to our lineup, would you consider benching Kendall and having Piazza be the full-time catcher (when he's healthy) and keeping Cust as our DH to get more run producers in the lineup? <Especially if Kendall continues to hit below the mendoza line.>
by sf drift king on May 24, 2007 10:51 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Mine
Mr. Geren,
With the recent success of Jack Cust, what do you think you will do once Mike Piazza rejoins the team? Do you have any thoughts of putting him behind the plate to catch a few games a week in order of replacing the non-hitting Kendall?
Also, if Eric Chavez continues to struggle at the plate and avoids the DL, do you/ have you had thoughts of batting him lower in the order?

Honestly, I am frustrated that Chavy's lack of a bat has been in the lineup daily. I am sure that Geren will reply that his glove has been to valuable to keep off the diamond even though he stares at pitches down the middle of the plate all game long or waves at them.

"lower in the order" as in AAA?
Because, seriously, that's where his stats put him right now.
He's barely hitting Mendoza-plus this month. I don't want him hitting 8th if he's going to put up Scutaro numbers. Donnie Murphy can do better.

Related to this
Can the team sustain two spots on the roster for pure DH's? Won't one or both of them be underutilized?
(The answer, of course, is to dump Melhuse and make Piazza the real backup catcher, but Geren will never say this publicly).

my question
It appears you have done a fantastic job keeping the team focused despite the injuries. Have you managed a situation like this before? If not, what experiences are you leaning on to handle the situation? Do you have any "mentors" you have been getting advice from? Not to dig up the past, but have you talked with Macha regarding how he handled it or if he would have done anything differently?
Thanks for letting us have input to the questions.

With the new stadium on the way, do you feel the A's are going to get the financial support they need to sign some top talent in the next few years and more importantly keep the stars they currently have instead of being the mlb juggernauts farm team year in year out. Was the Swisher extention a sign of things to come?

This is great, but I'm cynical
I love the idea of asking the manager these questions but I doubt that we'll get anything close to straight answers from Bob. Regarding the Kendall question, I'm sure Geren will tell us that 1) Kendall is a career .300 hitter and 2) his value to the team can't be found in the box scores, etc...

Banning Screwballs?
Mr. Geren,
Could you shed some light on whether (and if so, why) Curt Young really did ask/tell rookie left-hander Dallas Braden not to throw his screwball, which so many of us AN'ers read about as the key pitch in his arsenal that helped him move quickly through the minor leagues?

Dear Bobby,
- Since alcohol has been banned in the A's clubhouse, the team has come down with a rash of hamstring injuries and other kinds of muscle strains. Among its many salubrious effects, alcohol is a muscle relaxant. Would you please have a talk with your Doctors about the benefits to the team of relaxing the beer ban?
- Kendall's offensive drop-off is typical of catchers nearing the end of their career. Would it kill you to sit him down one or two days a week, or does he have a picture of you with an underage tranny goat?
- Chavy has been in steady decline since breaking his hand in Chicago in 2004. Given that he's not serious about returning to a healthy state, why don't you ask Billy to trade him?
- The Closer and the Setup Man are on the DL, or should be. While the A's are on a pace to eclipse all major league records for injuries this year, these two taken together have to be by far the most significant. Allen Embree is a Great American and Jay Marshall has been a pleasant surprise, but it has to be obvious that the A's aren't going to win too many games with a closer and setup man. What is Billy prepared to do to deal with this crisis?
Thank you, drive through.

PLEASE ask him about defense
How do the A's go about preparing their defensive alignments for each opponent? Rene Lacheman carries a giant binder in the dugout during every game - is this usually what he's assessing when the A's are in the field? Is he looking at spray charts and hitter/pitcher data, and determining if, for example, Mark Ellis needs to be 3 steps to his left when Dave Roberts is up?
Or, is all of this information and discussion handled in a meeting before each series with the entire coaching staff?
Another way to phrase this would be - In terms of defensive alignment, do the A's play most hitters they face "straight up", or is there at least a subtle shift for literally every hitter they face, based upon statistical data?
You have to figure that if anyone is doing that, it's the A's.
Another question, still on the topic of defense, is:
Which defensive metric (PMR,Zone Rating, Dewan's +/-, etc.) does the team value the most in terms of evaluating defenders, or do they have their own?
Thanks for providing us with these unique opportunities, Blez.

questions...
I think everyone wants to know how long the "Kendall is a major league baseball player" charade can last. But there's absolutely no one Geren gives a straight answer to that question, and it'll just end up being some Gardenhire-esque rant about hustle, grittiness, scrappiness, defense, and teamwork. We've all read that garbage before, and don't need to read it again now. But perhaps he would answer something about whether or not Melhouse will actually get more playing time, whether he expects Suzuki to be on the roster, or his opinion on Piazza playing catcher.
Next, why is Chavez hitting lower in the order? Heck, even last season, he ASKED to be moved lower, and was refused. (yes, I realize different managers) At this point, he's a defensive specialist, and I think most A's fans have given up on the idea that he's a 35HR potential guy. If another player with exact stats to Chavez, including the past couple years, was on the team, but wasn't named Eric Chavez, there's no was he would hit 3rd or 4th (or so). The A's should be above making decisions based on contract status or name recognition.
My last one is regarding Braden's screwball and why he's not allowed to throw it. To me, it makes no sense at all. If the choice is: (1) an ineffective, but healthy pitcher, or (2) an effective pitcher who might get hurt at some point, you obviously go with #2.
I know others have already mentioned these, so consider this me casting my vote for those who have already brought these up.

Chavvy Is Indeed The Elephant
You really do have to force Geren's hand on Chavvy. In particular, why does Chavvy continue to bat in the heart of the order? The guy sucks big time in the clutch, yet every time a rally gets going, who steps to the plate? Personally, I'd rather have Scutaro up there with a RISP. So Geren can't get away with a lame "he's such a great guy he plays hurt." Bottom line question is: do you have confidence that in his current health situation Chavvy will bat as much .250 with RISP? And if not why is he not batting 8th or 9th or heaven forbid riding the bench while Scutaro gets his shot? I've said it before, but the last time Chavvy really sat for a while (when he broke his finger a couple of years ago) the A's got surprisingly hot... A sucky Chavvy not driving in runs just isn't that valuable. Ride the bench and shut up. And if your arms hurt stop playing those damn video games my source in the clubhouse tell me Chavvy plays constantly.
My second question would be why in the world did Geren let Kendall hit in that game against KC with the winning run on 3rd and 1 out? Wasn't Kendall the least likely guy on the team to either get a hit or a long enough fly ball to score the run? What the hell was that about? And assuming he tries to walk us through the these-aren't-the-droids-you're-looking-for Kendall-Jedi mind tricks, a follow up would be: do you ever wonder if you're making a mistake?
by solotar on May 24, 2007 4:45 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Somewhat more polite/hypothetical/universal
Mr. Geren, as a manager, how do you deal with a player who's clearly very smart and very talented, has done well in the past, isn't injured, isn't visibly doing anything wrong that anyone can detect...but just isn't hitting well? How do you balance your responsibility to the team as a whole vs. your need to respect that individual player and make the best use of him in the long and short term?

These are
some quality questions. I will say that a lot of the questions are going to be tough to ask because after being around these baseball guys enough (and Geren in particular), they're not going to call out a player publicly. After interviewing him once already, he's not ever going to be negative so I'm going to ask the questions in a way where we'll hopefully get an answer.

And my second question
Mr. Geren, when do you think women will be allowed to try out for MLB?
by Englishmajor on May 24, 2007 5:04 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Interesting thought.
I know there have been one or two that have played in the minors. I get the feeling a Jackie Robinson of Women will be needed to pave the way for others to have a legimate shot at the show. Back in little league, one of the best players in league was a girl (Frank Viola's neice if I remember correctly), but she moved to softball because she'd have a better shot at getting a scholarship. It'll probably take more opportunities at the very bottom and work it's way up. It's a good question to ask.

by Nico on May 24, 2007 5:29 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
No, not a good point
Chavez's position in the lineup has been getting better, but it's still not right. Tuesday and Wednesday he wasn't playing at all, so those don't count. As you say, he was moved to #5 as of Sunday, which is an improvement, but that still puts him ahead of Crosby on Sunday and Monday, which is not right.
And of course before that, on Saturday Chavez was batting #3, ahead of DJ and Cust, which is just crazy.
I love Chavez, but I agree that he needs to move down in the order. He should be below Crosby for sure and probably below Ellis and Buck, too.
Ahead of Kendall, Scutaro and Bocachica -- yeah, I'm fine with that -- but you know, if you look at short-term trends Chavez is even hitting below those guys. Scutaro and Kendall aren't exactly hot, but over the past week they've at least been lukewarm, while Chavez has been ice cold.
by iglew on May 24, 2007 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe he should be
below Crosby and Ellis in the order. If so, he should be on DL, since he is an unquestionably better hitter than those two when healthy (and an equally good hitter when not healthy).
Is it "crazy" to bat him above Crosby and Ellis who are quite clearly mediocre hitters in the best of circumstances? You would have to be crazy to think so (especially since lineups aren't really a big deal anyway.)

There has been some speculation that a four man rotation could be tried again. Is this a myth, like the Yeti, or does this topic ever come up when planning a team?

Have the A's considered going this route?
by grover on May 24, 2007 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Question for the skipper.
I have heard the common belief from A's management that injuries are just "the luck of the draw" and are just random occcurances. But many at AN don't share this belief. The number of A's injuries in recent years are not "regressing to the mean" but seem to be multiplying at an ever increasing rate. For a team that believes so strongly in the numbers and in stats as the A's do, this number of injuries each year must be more than troubling. Is it possible that there is one or more root problems in the physical conditioning systems that the A's are employing, and that these injuries, and repeat injuries, and repeat injuries to multiple players is not random??
by robertmelvin on May 24, 2007 8:43 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not troubling, it's intentional
Injured players is the new OBP.
Sounds like a joke, but I'm serious. We've had some interesting discussions threads here about clever ways to manipulate the DLs in order to keep more players for less money. If it's really true that having guys rotating in and out of the DL is an underappreciated advantage, then it logically follows that players who are known to be injury prone are an undervalued assets.
That's not to say an injury-prone player is a better player than one who stays healthy, but his contract is a better bargain relative to how much it is valued by other GMs.
This is no longer a small sample size. We now have a couple seasons where Beane has gone out and obtained players who are underpriced in part because of a history of injury. Add to that the team's idiosyncratic use of the DL and the fact that in spite of the zillions of injuries we're still doing pretty good in the standings, and I don't think you're looking at a coincidence. I think it's a deliberate strategy.
Presumably Geren would be aware of this strategy, even if he's not directly involved in implementing it, but I don't think the organization is ready to own up to it publicly yet.
I should clarify: I don't think we're intentionally inviting injuries to the guys we've already got -- there's no advantage in that -- but I definitely think we're deliberately obtaining guys who are already injury prone. Shannon Stewart, for example, fits the pattern of buying an injury-prone guy, even though (so far) he's beat the pattern and stayed healthy.
by iglew on May 24, 2007 11:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think this is true
At least in my memory when Billy or any of the Asst. GMs in the past 2 or 3 years have been asked about "Moneyball" they give an answer like, "When the book was written OBP was an undervalued stat and the league has caught up to that. We have had to move on to other undervalued players."
I think there is enough specific info now to say that the DL stuff is a calculated risk. This also explains why Kendall and Chavvy have been highly valued. They're signed and they play a lot of games. Healthy mediocre bodies are valuable as filler when you expect a rotating cast of occasionally-brilliant-but-injury-prone players to actually manufacture the runs.

Rookie pitchers
After the back-to-back blown saves vs. the Royals, several people wanted to see Connor Robertson get a chance at closing the next save opportunity, even if it meant he could be making his big league debut in the 9th inning of a 1 run game. How do you feel about debuting a pitcher in such a high stress situation?

I have a unique question
Hey Bob,
With all your baseball experience, and perhaps even golf experience, can you answer a question about bats?
Why is it that when a person plays golf, they use drivers, irons, wedges, putters... yet no one says it "messes up my swing" if they go from a driver to an iron, etc. Baseball players try to maintain exactly the same length and weight for their bats. I often hear about guys "grabbing the wrong bat" and they can tell right away. They never want to switch bats.
Or do they?
That is the question.
It seems to me, you might use a lighter bat is you're facing Zumaya at 100mph, for a quicker swing, and maybe move forward in the box and use a heavier bat with Jamie Moyer. But you never see much change in stance or position, AB to AB, for any particular player.
Or, if you have men on second and third and no outs, how about a heavier bat that puts more impact on a late swing and would also have a larger sweet spot?
Let's speculate, and say, some other bat is needed if it runners on first and second and no outs, in the 1st or 2nd inning! The GIDPs is ridiculous!
I dunno, maybe players are tinkering in that regard all the time. All I know is, I see a lot of shattered bats (thinner handles do not increase bat speed appreciably) and no one is using a bat with a thicker handle...you never see a "Nellie Fox" bottle bat anymore. Bats up until the 1980s had thicker handles.
Thinking about the athletes on crew teams (rowing, collegiate, Olympic) you rarely hear anything about forearm strain, bad elbows, even though the repetitive strain is tremendous (to the point of blisters on the hands). The oars (sweeps) are much larger diameter handles than bats. Could the trend to thinner handles be causing more fore-arm stress?
You do see "cupped ends" of bats, which again, probably is such a tiny percent of weight, no one could tell the difference whether they did it or not. How do these "fads" persist, with so much money in MLB at stake??

but it's soooo long. Can you condense it so it's a line or two?
by Tyler Bleszinski on May 25, 2007 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Okay, here is the distilled version
Do they order a ton of all-identical bats and stick to those, or do they like to switch with other available bats. Why not order a range of bat weights and lengths, like a golfer with a bag of clubs? And do players switch bats "mid-game" for situational hitting (like, getting a bunt down.)??
I subtracted the speculations and "rants"!

the bat question could be intresting, but
why not ask a player or equipment guy that one.
by Hawaii FO on May 25, 2007 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because Geren has both
He also was a minor league manager, which gives him some insight into players who learned with aluminum bats and then had to transition.
The idea of a question is not to get a "Yup" or "I dunno" answer. It's to make the other person say, "You know that's interesting you should ask, because... " and they go on for twenty minutes. That's what you want.
An equipment manager would just say, "Yeah they order their own bats. That's what they use, what they ordered."

Nice win yesterday!
The WHOLE TEAM looked great in a team effort! Crosby looks awesome and so does Shannon Stewart! I don't see the point of questioning the injuries. It's too knee jerk to blame the coaching staff or the players for being too laid back. I think the A's take their chances by taking on projects that tend to get injured, which makes them affordable by the A's. The pitching will continue hopefully to be good enough until Kotsay, Milty and others come back. PS is Rich Harden dead again? No word about him on the A's website in weeks it seems. Anyone?

Couple of Things
Some of the personnel questions are probably not something that Bob can answer. When someone returns from the DL gets called up or sent down or even remains part of the club, these calls are made by Beane. I doubt Bob has much influence. Billy deals the cards and Bob plays them. Point being, again don't ask something Bob can't answer.
I like the question about leading the AL in GIDP - and don't accept the pat answer about having to have men on in order to achieve a GIDP. A's are 5'th in OBP. The Indians are 3'rd in OBP and have GIPD the fewest times of any team in the AL.
Another hitting question would maybe be if he is concerned about the increase in the number of strikeouts that A's players are managing - compared to last year.
And, Would he (and under what circumstances) be the man to make the initial visit to the mound. I have seen both Leyland and Ozzie do this on occasion and it seems very effective. - Leyland did it against the A's last year in the ALCS. One of their pitchers was avoinding the strike zone and I suspect Leyland went out and gave him a, well a something. Somebody should have done that with Zito in game 1.
Lastly - not sure how to word this - but obviously Howe and Macha were seen as Billy puppets. Does Bob feel, now that the season is 1/4 over that he somehow has more say in the on-field managing than his predecessors? IF so, How? (not Howe) and if not, doesn't this contradict the preseason statements? I realise Billy isn't on the phone to the dugout in game, but his philosophies were felt to influence Macha and Howe to the point they were nothing more than Billy clones.
Be sure to thank Bob. This is an intersting opportunity that I am sure we never would have had under the Macha regime

GIDPs
Are also partially a function of a team's strikeouts. We have constructed a mostly low-strikeout team - since we make a lot of contact, that's why we have a lot of GIDPs.
We have more than the Indians because they have guys like Sizemore and Hafner, who strike out a lot. They also have better, faster athletes at several positions.
Slow, mediocre athletes + contact hitters = GIDPs.
Miguel Tejada is always near the league lead in GIDPs. It's not because he sucks - it's because he plays every day and strikes out only 60 times a year.

Ask about DiNardo
With the repeated need this season to find a new starter to plug into the rotation, why have they for so long resisted using DiNardo as a starter?
As an added bonus, if Lenny really is going to be called upon next time the #5 slot comes up, Geren might give you the early scoop. But no sense wasting a question asking that directly, since we'll know soon enough. I'm more curious about why they didn't start DiNardo before now.

Question
- As a manager, what steps do you take to avoid a culture of defeat in the face of all these injuries?
- What is the medical staff doing to address the rash of injuries we've seen in the last few seasons?
- From past interviews, it appears you are really keen to bring up young players. Has this year been enjoyable in that you've gotten to see a lot of AA and AAA guys come up to the big show?
by williadc on May 24, 2007 11:30 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
3 questions
- With all the injuries, are the A's willing to become the first team in baseball to impliment a "from the ground up" stretching/health program utilizing both in-season and off-season training with the most advanced new theories. Also using the new super-MRI machines and other advanced technoligy several times a year to catch injuries or hot spots before they would otherwise be known as a preventitive measure, thus making a committment to be the absolute best at this in baseball?
- Do you have a say in who the A's bring up from the minors or who might come to you via a trade, or do you find out after the fact. Who is the most important person that has a say after you and Billy?
- In what order do you rate these catcher skills to help your ballclub? Offense, Clutch offense, calling a game, defense behind the plate, defense on throwing out runners.

Role of a manager
How do you judge whether a manager is doing a good job? Are there measurable areas besides setting the lineup in a way that maximizes runs and making pitching changes at the appropriate times? Do you like at errors? (Is a team likely to be significantly more focused under one manager than another?)

One more question
that he probably won't answer has to do with steroids, amphetamines and HGH. Having been around clubhouses, would he recommend fans believe management when they say they have no idea that players are using PEDs, or is it like Ken Lay saying he had no idea what was going on at Enron?
