Huston Street on DL
Diary here:

This is terrible news. And to top it off, our speculations about Duke might not be off the mark. Citing an arthritic hip, he may join Street on the DL.

Just saw this on the transaction wire
My first thought was Geren will go to Duke to close, but that worries me a lot. Maybe Haren can close on his days off? Oh and when did Huston venture in to Centerfield? Guys in the minors must be salivating at the chance to play for the parent club this season.
duke might go on the DL as well.
Duchscherer was harsh on himself after Mike Sweeney homered off him in the Royals' 3-2 victory Wednesday but refused to use any physical problem as an excuse.
But his hip, which is arthritic, has been an issue since early in spring training, he said -- so much so that he thinks a trip to the disabled list might be in order.
"I want to help the team, and if I can't do that because of physical issues, maybe I should stop being stubborn," he said. "I'm going to talk to (manager) Bob (Geren) to see about the best course of action. It's arthritis in my hip, with inflammation in the joint capsule."
Can it get any worse?
What is going on with this team? It is contagious whatever it is.
Worse news ever. Duke needs to go on the DL, too, and now probably won't.
Maybe I will stop paying attention to the A's until July when some healthy players might reappear.
Injury Wise
Nothing surprises me anymore. This team just seems snakebit as far as injuries go. For some reason I think the A's will just keep plugging along.
This is crazy
We need to make a sacrifice to the baseball gods. I vote Jason Kendall. Who's with me?
Are we sacrificing him to the Cougars?
prognosis
irritation in right ulnar nerve.
is street done for the minimum 15 days, 1 month,
the entire season?
do we have any doctors here? harold?

and
it's high time the a's medical and training
staff answer some questions.
what is up with all the injuries over the past
3 seasons?
listening to larry davis on the on the pre-game
show yesterday, he sounded like a quack.
i dont think billy can continue to shield this
level of incompetence.

the news gets worse...
SuSlu with an update. Street may be out for
upto 2 months.
by oak1 on May 15, 2007 3:35 PM PDT reply actions
She is basing that on Josh Johnson tho 100%

I just saw that on ESPNEWS
and rushed to AN and you all beat me to it. My question is, who will the A's have close? Rich Harden?
by Tyler Bleszinski on May 15, 2007 3:40 PM PDT reply actions
closer by committee
kiko and embree, i think.
by fadedash on May 15, 2007 3:41 PM PDT up reply actions
Funny
I didn't read Slusser's column before posting my comment. She brought up the possibility of Harden closing as well. This might be the perfect excuse to do it.
by Tyler Bleszinski on May 15, 2007 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions
I said this as well in the original thread
especially since they always limit his pitch count when he comes off the DL.
I wonder if they could convince him to do it (willingly), without it looking like a demotion. He seems a little stubborn.
"a little stubborn"
hahaha.
yup
atleast for the next 2 weeks, i expect.
Witasick was starting to come around.
I liked his ninth inning K of Barfield
the other day in a tight spot.
His stuff is closer good. Can he put
the mental part of the game together?
Can he prove us wrong?
by oak1 on May 15, 2007 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions
Heck, I liked Duke's K in the 9th too
but I'm not the ump apparently.
too bad
I think the whole Coliseum liked that K
if Street is out for 2+ months
than Harden would be the best fit in the closer's
role assuming he comes back early June as expected.
Hopefully that'll keep him healthy through the
year as well.
Loiaza takes Braden's spot in the rotation and
Kennedy is the fifth starter.
Unless we pull off a trade. Does Billy have more
magic up his sleeve?

You just gave me a heart attack!
My eyes skipped over the IF in your headline and I swear my heart stopped for a second!
by BobbyCrosbysGirl on May 15, 2007 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions
It's a very possible if...
based on other guys with the same injury..have to hope they caught it sooner than others
by OaktownPower on May 15, 2007 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions
ESPNEWS?
What, you don't sit on AN all day like we do? Jeez, what kind of blogfather are you?? I think this is the busiest day on AN since Kendall hit his home run! Now I'm wondering if either of these days ever really happened.....please let this all be a dream, please let this all be a dream......
I have ESPNEWS on as background noise
basically. It's the only ESPN property left that's worth anything and that's because they don't know how else to fill 24 hours of coverage without expanded beyond the Terrell Owens/ Red Sox/Yankees sphere.

This makes me so sad.
I just went to mlb.com to check things and I saw the headline and my jaw dropped (though I'm not even sure why I'm shocked at injuries at this point). Of course it's a guy who has actually been GOOD. Huston! WHY!? :(
If Huston is going to be out for a while (::sniff::), and Harden can adjust to a closing role, I say we try it. Not much to lose at this point. He needs to work up to pitching more innings again anyway, I would think. :( sad!!
sad? really? i've gotten passed sad/mad and have
moved onto simply laughing at the sheer amount of injuries this team has had already.
by fadedash on May 15, 2007 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions
laughing? i've moved past laughter and have
moved onto stoicism.
...
I've reached indifference.
It's like...
I'm sad when I think of individuals being hurt... and then I think about how this is the 2nd time we've had 7 guys on the DL and I start laughing. Does anyone know what the record is for most guys on the DL at one time? Isn't there a limit to guys you can put on the 15 day?
ok, here's my understanding....
guys on the 15 day DL are still on the 40-man roster. The major league roster has 25 on it. So, using simple math, you can have 15 guys on the 15-day DL before it starts impacting your ML roster. Let's not get there....
whew!
that would be totally insane. I doubt it would get to that point. We'd at least move some guys to the 60 day to clear up some spots for other people by that point haha
Maybe Ziggy will get a promotion
to fill in for Robertson. By the numbers he looks like the most obvious choice.
The only good thing that has come from this
is that I have a much better understanding of how the 25 man vs 40 man rosters work as well as the 15 day vs 60 day DL (and how they apply to each roster).
Still, I would have been okay making it through the season blissfully ignorant of this information...
Harden closing is probably the best otpion:
I agree, Harden closing makes too much sense right now to pass up.
Guys who might come dirt-cheap to consider to fill the void:
Jesus Colome (or is it Colume?)- has closed before, a decent stopgap, and is an AN favorite!
Matt Lindstrom of the Marlins - dude can hit 100 mph easily, and would add some Swedish class to the A's
Ambiorix Burgos - I don't really like him, but has experience, throws hard, maybe worth a flier.
Brad Lidge - The price might be too high, but available I'd imagine.
Who knows though, this injury really sucks. Credit to the A's for not quitting, yet.
i agree, i like harden as papelbon
i like the idea of having a nasty, scary 8-9th inning rich harden, up 2 or 3 times a week.
they should give komine a start while they're at it, a good #5 starter isn't going to just fall out of a tree (or magically appear in a NL trade like cust)
Harden closing might not be a bad idea,
but somehow I think the A's will put Gaudin in the closer role in order to use Kennedy as the fifth starter when Elo returns.
On the bright side...
Hooray for Connor Robertson!
Harden for closer!
Happy children everywhere will see more homeruns in the ninth inning!
"That which does not kill me will only make me stronger."
Is ????? Garcia even an option?
I have not followed him at all, I'm guessing he is not, as he is not been mentioned...
My god! Where the hell did this come from?
Was it due to the celebration on Sunday? This is totally uncalled for. I hate MAY!
I think this happened before
Sunday's game. On Sunday, I noticed that Street was sitting in the dugout, not the bullpen, during the game. I thought that was odd, and started worrying that he was hurt. But I told myself I was being a worry wart.
I'm numb. And sick. Sickly numb.
by SportySpice @ Athletics Nation on May 15, 2007 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions
and you didn't tell us?
( i know, keep it from the guests at the party until they need to know)
This is why you don't trade McBeth!!
How the fuck did this happen
It comes out of nowhere. I'm so sick of players who never stay healthy. And the A's have so many of these guys. Given Duchscherer's situation, the A's seem to me without options.
Excuse me...
I need to find a towell to throw in the ring...
Some body please yell "no mas...no mas.."
that took me a minute
I couldn't figure out what du or squ were
OMG, I come home from a rough day
at work to this news? Holy shxt....what next.
Tip.
Buy stock in Ben & Jerry's. This is going to be a very long season and I plan on eating myself to death! I will be nothing but ass!!!

or should we cut him some more rope?
.. until, say, 15 guys on the DL? ..

in game news
Marty Lurie just said that tonight's lineup has Scutaro playing in RF!! Yes, Kendall is catching (what else is new?) Stewart is leading off.
Snelling, Buck, Melhuse, Bradley?
by Randy Bell on May 15, 2007 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Yep
Bad sign that Bradley needs another day off so soon after coming back.
Did anyone catch him grabbing his
hammie last night?

I Hope Scut can get some hits! :)
.. hopefully he'll be fine in the OF ..

fucking Kendall and Stewart
are the only ones who don't get injured. this is bullshit.
Well kudos to somebody who ..
.. manages to stay off the damn DL! .. pardon my french, I rarely use expletives but this is getting ridiculous! .. Fox GameTrax for Game

So very nice.

Same Here ..
.. now if we could transform our mutual admiration into some effective "healing balm" for our banged-up A's ... Go A's! :)
by Randy Bell on May 15, 2007 6:45 PM PDT up reply actions
so we have no set up man and no closer?
the starters are just going to have to go 9. this is ridiculous.
by larrysgurl on May 15, 2007 6:30 PM PDT reply actions
Oh great...
now we are really screwed. Duke is closer whether he needs time or not. Now we see what this club is really made out of...
We already know.
Duct tape.
I think at this point if the A's can
just stay within 5 back of the Angels until everyone gets healthy, then they will be ok.
by larrysgurl on May 15, 2007 6:50 PM PDT reply actions
I believe the rule is
so long as we're at 500 when the All Star Break comes we'll be just fine.
Hope Felix has a good nite ..
.. in his first start after being on the DL .. go M's, beat the Halos !!!!
by Randy Bell on May 15, 2007 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions
currently we're only 1 game back in loss column
.. so hang in there A's! ..
by Randy Bell on May 15, 2007 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions
heck yeah. Imagine the psychological lift when
guys start returning. They should be fresh as hell come the "dog days" of summer AND Macha doesn't coach this team anymore :-)

lineup
DJ and Cust are one step closer to where they belong. Now just move Chavez down to 6th and it'll be just right.
