GotGreen's FUN Day at FanFest! (with pictures, of course!)
[EDITOR'S NOTE: I was going to write something about my love for Travis Buck today when I looked at this diary and realized it HAD to be on the front page for everyone to see. Oh and I'm guessing I'm in the minority on this, but I LOVE the new jerseys. I think they look really sharp on the players. I was skeptical before, but they look really nice. Thanks for sharing this gotgreeen! - Blez]
This was last year's line for the autograph tickets at around 8:15am.

And this was this year's line for autograph tickets at the same time.

How sad. :(
Well, sad for the A's but good for me because my mission for the day was to get Ellis to sign my cap (I've been stalking him for the past two years to try to get him to sign it!) and Suzuki to sign my Suzuki shirt and I had no problems getting the autograph tickets for either session since there was hardly a line! However, I didn't even need to buy those tickets since I ran into both guys inside before their autograph session times!
Oh well, the money is going towards a good cause so it's all good!
Cold, stormy, rainy weather was predicted for Saturday but we fanfest'ers got INCREDIBLY lucky! It did not rain AT ALL and the weather was in the 50's by 8am! Thank you, weather and baseball gods!

While waiting in line for the gates to open, I saw a cart approaching our area. From previous FanFest experience, I knew that those carts sometimes carry players and lo and behold, there were a few players in it (sporting the new black alternate jerseys)!

I ran towards the direction of the cart and the two players that were closest to the cart, Alan Embree and Rob Bowen, were at the American Red Cross area getting ready to hand out pamphlets about donating blood.

The other two that were on the cart, Daric Barton and Jerry Blevins, were at the A's season ticket booth!

I headed back to the line to get into the Coliseum because the gates were opening and as I walked inside past the ticket scanner, imagine my surprise when Donnie Murphy handed me a Mark Ellis poster!

And imagine my bigger surprise when I turned to my right and I saw Mark Ellis handing out Ellis posters!! Haha!

I had some time before my first autograph session with Ellis and Murphy (the first two players I saw today!) so I decided to walk around. I went to the East Side Club and saw a familiar face!

Bobby Crosby! He looked happy. Maybe he was happy he didn't have to participate in the Q&A sessions this year. Haha.
I headed over to the Ellis/ Murphy autograph session and the line wasn't too bad.

I <3 Ellis!! And Donnie, will you become the new Marco Scutaro?!</p>
Since this year is the 40th year anniversary of the Athletics being in Oakland, they had a bunch of displays showcasing things from the different eras here.
This one is from the first decade in the 60's and 70's:

This one is from the current decade (90's and 00's):

And speaking of Oakland Athletic history, Hall of Famer Rollie Fingers was at Fanfest!!

Hanging around the East Side Club turned out to be a great idea for me who just wanted to take a bunch of pictures because Rich Harden and Kevin Melillo were sitting around!

I decided to head across the way to the West Side Club to see what was going on over there and the first person I ran into was Kurt Suzuki! I decided I was NOT going to ask him to sign my shirt then since I had an autograph session with him later.

Continuing my trek around the West Side Club, I ran into a few more players!
Jack Cust and Dallas Braden!

Dan Meyer and Lenny DiNardo!

and even Bob Geren!

By then it was time for my autograph session with Kurt and Justin Duchscherer!

I did more walking and ran into more players!
More Ellis!

Kentucky Joe Blanton!

After all that walking around, I took the chance to sit and watch some of the Q&A going on. This was the pitchers one with Rollie Fingers, Alan Embree, Huston Street, and Curt Young.

After that Q&A was over, I went to take the clubhouse tour to see if there were any big changes since last year. I was shocked to find there was NO line for the tour!!
The first thing I noticed that was different from last year were the posters on the walls in the walkway leading up to the clubhouse. They added a few new ones ... probably because of the 40th year anniversary and because only three or so players from last year are back! =P

It made me happy to see this was still there though!

But it made me sad seeing this! :(

I didn't see any major changes in the clubhouse besides this table right smack in the middle of the room. I'm assuming it's for the card playing!

Want to eat like the A's (or NOT eat like them)? This was posted on the bulletin board in the clubhouse.

I caught part of the Q&A with Suzuki, Barton, Cust, and Ellis as I was heading towards the dugout.

I wish I had these seats during games!!

Why are there now Wells Fargo signs all over the dugout walls when there are BofA ATMs all over the Coliseum??

My day at Fanfest was coming to an end and I caught a glimpse of our probable center fielder, Chris Denorfia!

And my day ended on a great note because I took one last pic with one of my favorite young guys, Barton, before I left. There were not too many people left in the East Side Club at the end of the day and I'm sure he had things to do and places to go but he stopped to sign autographs or take pictures with every single person that asked him. One of the security people asked Daric if he was alright and if he had things to do and he said something like "yeah, sign autographs!". AWESOME. :)

After attending Fanfest, I am officially excited and ready for this season to start! I am over being sad and bitter over the loss of Haren, Swisher, Kotsay, and Scutaro (well, almost over) and I am ready to see what these young guys can do!
Thanks for taking the time to read my recap of my great day! :)
Check out the Q&A sessions on the A's official page OR check out Englishmajor's awesome job of transcribing them here!

absolutely great pics!
You look real familiar in those pics with Suzuki and Barton -- I'm sure I've seen your face at the games!
Wow... the roster's so thin
they called up AAA guys to sign at FanFest!
Glad you had a good time.
i was wondering
why i kept seeing the same players over and over at fanfest! it was probably cuz the roster was so thin!
Blanton's
been hogging the post-game spreads.

good stuff, gotgreen
made me feel as if I was there.
or wish that I was...
Great diary
Next year, can I just follow you around? You obviously have the player-meeting mojo!
Nice, but do the A's need a history lesson?
The white cleat tradition "started in Philadelphia under Charlie Finley ownership"?
And it's just my opinion, but I think that the recollections of the 90s-00s era need to expunge every trace of Ben Grieve.

yikes
I have always said the A's could do a better job of honoring their past.
Damn, FSU, I can't believe I missed that.
Finley era
by nihilist on Jan 27, 2008 12:27 PM PST up reply actions
he tried to in 1954
but was unsuccessful.
The man who did buy the team, Arnold Johnson, moved the A's to KC for the '55 season.
Finley purchased a controlling interest in the A's from Johnson's estate in 1960(Johnson having died in March of that year);
Excellent Post
For A's fans who live 500+ miles away, I appreciated the total synopsis for Fanfest. It appears this would have been the year to go. A couple of questions.
Are these mandatory or voluntary for the players? Where was Huston Street?
IMO, I would have had a majority of the prospects from the Haren & Swisher trades there. They could have had a prospects corner area for group shots & autographs. Maybe the prospects could have stood under big signs, with this is who we got for Haren & this is who we got for Swisher.
In the everyone's a critic corner, the only picture I disliked, was the one where the football field / yardage lines were still visible on the field. IMO, it lessened the baseball feel for Fanfest. Maybe, they could have had the A's players line up & do a 100 yard dash with wagering. All proceeds could have went to the Make-A- Wish Foundation.
Cool ideas
Hey, those are great ideas. Having never been to one of these events I don't really know what goes on besides signing autographs and listening to the players talk about how excited they are for the year. These days you have to interact with people in different ways in order to get their attention, and I can't figure out why the A's are so bad at attracting fans. I know the usual reasons (bad stadium, it's Oakland, the freeways etc) but it doesn't seem to be a problem for the Warriors.
I'm in Portland so I don't get to see much of the marketing, but the A's have to improve in that category. If players received through winter trades were together displaying some skills the fans would get excited about the trades, rather than continuing to lament (like I'm doing) Are we too busy evaluating players that the team can't put some creative energy into a strategy to bring in more fans?
I wish they'd ask me. I've got a bunch of ideas.
some of the other things that go on at fanfest
besides signing autographs and the Q&A's:
- baseball 101 clinics: where a different coach and player are at each session to discuss things like draft & scouting, hitting fundamentals, pitching fundamentals, and philosophies of game management
- coaches corner
- taking pictures with the world series trophies & and A's legend (this year was ray fosse and curt young)
- clubhouse and batting cage tours
- and this year there was a special autograph and photo session with rollie fingers
Ergonomics
gotgreen- Thanks for the additional info.
I just checked your great pics again. Another thing noticable to me, is the terrible chairs they give to the players. If you got a bad back, the last thing you want to sit in, is one of those bar stool types they had around that card table. Honestly, I have had anterior cervical fusion surgery on my spine, & those chairs are a backache waiting to happen. No support, no nothing.
Their folding locker chairs look like those cheap discount store specials.
The A's need to have one of those worksite specialists come around & give some suggestions. Sorry to be a critic, but your pictures are worth a thousand words.
Do the A's Think Outside The Box?
The A's need to poll this site for some practical ideas that they could actually use. Does your name mean something interesting? Cool waves? Leafy green substances?
hehe none of the above
i joined AN around the time the A's had that whole "got green?" slogan one year!
I am curious about your sig....
the car or the "high altitude"?
yeah, huston was there
but the only time i saw him was during the Q&A session.
i think the only newly acquired guy who was at fanfest was dana eveland, one of the guys we got in the haren trade.
Thank you gotgreen
That was a wonderful tour of your day at the Fan Fest and since I couldn't be there (I live in Portland)your diary was the second best choice. I love seeing the pictures and seeing the faces.
Nice work.
Great diary, GotGreen
We were there too, but saw 20% of your take! You should give guided tours next year!
Thanks for the pics!
Did Blanton get married again? He's wearing a ring.

Yes
around the same time as Crosby, I think
Black Uni's
I kinda dig em.
I own a replica from the 2001(?) season.
I'm assuming that, as they did 2001(?) to celebrate 100 years of A's baseball, that they will be wearing them in celebration of 40 years in Oakland.
If my memory serves me correctly, the A's had an amazing winning percentage in those uni's. Too bad they didn't get to wear them in the playoffs!
Was this confirmed by anyone at the event?
Thanks for the recap and pics!
2000
the wore those black uni's in 2000.

Thanks A's F and R
I remember now. I thought it was a cool coincidence that the birth of the franchise coincided with the birth of a new century.
They did win alot in them too.
Nice pictures!
Thanks for sharing.
I was curious and Googled that "10 Foods You Should Never Eat!" thing, if anyone wants to read it, it's online here:
Nice pictures...
But seriously, gotgreen, you gotta cut back on the sugar. You look seriously jacked up.

wow
I suddenly feel so old.....all these players look like kids!!! I'm not that old, but....
young
I have to say, they totally seemed like kids, too, though I don't mean that in a bad way. Talking to Daric Barton was (unsurprisingly) like talking to a friendly frat boy- I just really was reminded that the guy's 22!

thanks for the pics!
i feel i am on the verge of getting jazzed up for the coming season now.
GG,
Thanks for sharing your pics! Shame on me for not going to FanFest yesterday. Heard on the news that it was packed with over 35,000 tixs sold. Uh...didn't look like it.
by LilAnnieOaktown on Jan 27, 2008 7:05 PM PST reply actions
only 12,000+ went to fanfest
but i think they sold over 35,000 tickets to games during the season because they went on sale the day of fanfest.
Eric Chavez?
Thanks so much for the photos and reports! Did you (or anyone) see Chavez? Or is he so "fragile" after surgery that they told him not to come out?
Anyway, you never know what's going to happen in baseball so maybe this year won't be as bad as everyone thinks. Or not.
you're welcome! :)
and no, chavez didn't go. :(
besides chavez and gaudin, i think pretty much everybody else was there. it seemed like a bunch of players were missing though because there was no swisher, kotsay, or haren!
turnout
I seriously think that the weather was a huge factor. Since many of the people who attend are families with season tickets or kids club members, who get tickets for free, and since a lot of the fun for kids is the outdoor section with all the games, I could see the prospect of rain keeping folks home. It POURED here the night before, and I was fully geared up to be dumped on, but for some wonderful reason the weather was perfect.

In the Q & A session
Buck said the secret to his hair is not washing it very often.
wow, just think, it took
Zito becoming a Giant for you to get your pic with him
This was much faster!
So you were close enough to tell
Did his hair really smell?

"...in Philadelphia under Charlie Finley?"
Pretty sure Charlie O. wasn't around for the Philly years. I know he made a play for them, but couldn't get them until later. And I'm pretty sure he started the white cleat thing, but shouldn't it have been in KC?
And don't you think the A's, of all people, would be the ones to know?
Where's 67MARQUEZ when you need him?
great pics!
Thanks for the great pictures and great diary.
I love the Mark Ellis and Donnie Murphy handing out posters, I did not see that when I came in.
Okay, AN Dads, which of these two specimens ...
...do you want dating your daughter?
Everybody else: caption contest!

I went to Fanfest
and didn't even see half of what you did. i guess thats what I get for showing up at 12:30. I did get a video of the Q & A session #3. I used the new digital camera I just got so i'm not sure if I can post it yet but I'll try.
Blez, it looks like you're competing
with Greenandgoldgirl for Travis Buck -- I think she's ahead! ;-)
I wonder if other pitchers share Street's concern that the black jerseys will make it easier for opposing batters to pick up the ball? That should be a bigger concern than how they look, in my opinion.
The black unis are horrid
The A's colors are green, gold and white...period.
Last time (2000) the team couldn't be bothered to buy matching black batting helmets. The green helmets with the black jerseys looked ridiculous. Don't know what they are doing about that this season.
Bill King and Ken Korach made no attempt to hide their total disdain for the black tops. I look forward to Ken upholding that tradition in the Bill King Broadcast Booth this season.
gotblack
OK, I'm obviously not up to speed. What's the story with the black uniforms? I figured it was just some promotional thing, right? They're not actually changing our regular colors away from green-and-gold, are they?? Because that would totally suck.
it's an alternate jersey only
The SP gets to pick the uniform each day and they will stil have the normal ones as well.
