I'm still trying to come to terms with the loss
of Ruddy Lugo.

$1.77M
Apparently either the A's front office or Gaudin's agent has learned how to add two numbers and then divide by two.

I have $50.37m for total payroll ...
with 14 of the 25 players making minimum wage.

I got 50.72 and 13
I doubt Calero is making the minimum. I assumed he got a mill or so. It still hasn't been reported what he signed for.

right, he made $1.6 million in 2007
I seem to recall reading somewhere that the A's signed him for less than that for 2008

Good point ...
I'm missing him. I'd guess the rest of the difference is you're using a more accurate estimate of minimum salary (I'm just estimating $400k).

Why is 16 the most Gaudin can win?

It's a little known clause in his contract ...

he's likely to start the season on the DL
my guess is he'd miss the first month.
16 wins isn't impossible but not really likely either.
I voted for 12 wins.

Rotoworld...
Often has no idea what the hell they are talking about when it comes to things like this. They are the ones who claimed Gaudin would barely be a serviceable 5th starter last year.
I would assume Gaudin will be ready to start the season until we start to hear mumblings from "in the know" reporters that tell us otherwise.

I would be thrilled if Gaudin
was able to get ready during spring training, and ready to start for the A's come the beginning of the season -- just a few short months after hip and foot surgery.
But regardless of what Rotoworld says, it is probably more realistic to assume that the surgeries, recovery and rehab will set him back a bit in spring training, and consequently for the start of the season.

The A's were pretty clear after the surgery
that his recovery timetable would have him ready for Opening Day. Of course, they're also giving him a thumb guard so...?
