The A’s Can, And Will, Win The Division…IF These 5 Things Happen
We all know that a lot would have to go just right for the 2008 A’s to contend. Today, I offer one analyst’s view of the five things that have to happen for Oakland to turn the corner and surprise the pundits by taking the AL West crown:
#1. Bobby Crosby needs to hit left-handed. That way, all those sliders will hit him in the foot and he’ll have an OBP of 1.000, instead of the .112 he is able to muster as a right-handed batter.
#2. Gil Heredia needs to make the rotation. No one thought he was any good, and everyone thought he was over the hill, back in the late ‘90s and he just kept spotting “nothing-balls” on the outside corner at the knees until the day he woke up and remembered how awful he was. Maybe he’s forgotten again and we could really use a solid veteran starter at the front of the rotation.
#3. Clarence Cockrell needs to be replaced by a Chinese herbalist who can work with Dan Johnson. In just two years, the guy has had double-vision, a torn labia (or labrum – now I can’t remember), meningitis, leprosy, gout, scurvy, and something I understand feels like an earache but is actually “dampness in spleen.” And in the batter’s box – well, I haven’t seen so much rocking back and forth since I rented “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” (Answer: Danny Putnam)
#4. Daric Barton needs to join the “First basemen who don’t know how to spell Derek” support group, because Derrek Lee is getting lonely and there’s just an awful lot of chips and salsa going to waste each week. How this will help the A’s win the division, I’m not exactly sure. But at least maybe it will help the Cubs.
#5. The A’s need Brown to have a “career year”. Yes, all of them. Actually, the whole electromagnetic spectrum, if possible, from Dick Green and Vida Blue to Bud Black and Frank White. Age could definitely be a factor but there’s no doubting these guys’ talent.
OK, obviously most of this is just intended to be satirical and should be taken with a grain of crack. But I do think Crosby should hit left-handed.

re: #1
Come on, Nico... you know what the real result will be of all those HBPs taken by Lefty Crosby. Not OBP. DOA.
Since 2000
only 2 A's have played 162 games in a season. One was Miguel Tejada. The other will shock and likely terrify you. Keep in mind that he did it two seasons in a row. And both years, the A's were still probably the best team in MLB.
Hey, the guy had an incredible series
at Fenway. So what if the rest of his career stunk?
TLong and his .298 OBP
played 162 games at a corner outfield position for 2 straight years and 140 the next year. If that doesn't prove Dave Del Grande wrong, I don't know what does.
Terrence Long is traded ...
... but his ghost lives on and on.
The A's are not finished
I don't expect the A's to win the division or even a wild card finish but i do feel that a 80 win season is obtainable. Travis will put up Swisher numbers. Harden if healthy can come close to Haren #s. The bullpen will be better than last year. Any replacement outfielder will put up Kotsay's #s. Maybe Ducherer can put up Gaudin #s.
Factor in that the AL west will be a weak division. The M's have not improved and the rangers are weaker than last year. A .500 record is very possible.
The Mariners have improved
Replacing Horacio Ramirez with Carlos Silva is an improvement at least as large as replacing Jason Kendall with Kurt Suzuki. Ramirez's numbers from last season are, to quote the infamous blurb on the back of "Pink Flamingoes," like an explosion in a septic tank-- they have to be seen to be believed.
But don't the A's sweep the Mariners...
...in even-numbered years after 2004?

And that's a huge sample size, 'cuz
2004 is, like, a really big number.
Was that "seen to be believed"
originally penned as "dynamiting a brick shithouse: it has to been seen to be believed."

Since everyone agrees we need better medical help
I wholeheartedly concur: bring back Doctor Gil! And in the unlikely event the A's find themselves in a crucial Game 5 situation, I'll volunteer to slash Gil's tires to keep him from the game, if someone else promises to similarly thwart T-Long.

yes
i need doctor gil back in my life
OT question
Sorry, there's no DLD yet and I haven't the time to make one!
I'm doing a story on a high school hockey team, is a goalie save percentage of 89% pretty good? I really don't follow the sport much.
Dunno about high school
In the NHL the standard goalie save % is around the low-90s.
For high school, thats pretty good
When I played hockey, it wasn't uncommon to see a team score 10 goals a game. This goalie is probably giving up 3-4 goals a game, so that might be good depending on the league.
89% save percentage is lousy in the NHL though.

Does it count if
...the Brown who has a career year is Jeremy?
don't get me started on either
You forgot...
peace in the middle east, universal health care and a solution for undocumented workers.
All of that has to happen BEFORE the A's win the division this year.
Goal for 2008
My realistic goal for this year is for the team to not lose 100 games.
63 Wins! Woo Hoo!

Just think - that 63rd win
will be like clinching the pennant.
I was thinking 3rd sheep,
but you're baaaaaaaaaaaad!
One thing that will NOT help the team win
Fortunately, he signed elsewhere.
I nominate this for weird "The A's were going after this guy? Seriously? The A's??" headline of the offseason...
OK....But I'm Serious!!!.....No Really!!...I Am!!
5 Things that need to happen for the A's to REALLY contend in 2008!!
- The Rotation Is Healthy. Harden is healthy for the first time ever, Chad comes off the surgeries, and pitches like the 1st half of 2007, for the duration of 2008, and Duke finds hip relief in the consistency of a starting role. Blanton improves slightly and pitches 200 innings as usual, and Sarloos or a Rookie raps up the 5th spot. The rotation is the key, as usual.
- Barton is 2008 ROY!
- Chavy returns to form having finally kicked the nagging injuries with THREE key surgeries.
- Buck stays healthy and hits 290-300 as a lead-off hitter.
- Crosby Hits left handed!!

FanFest anyone, anyone, Bueller?
Who's going today? I just woke up to get ready.
I'm thinking of telling Beane that I don't want a divorce but we need marriage counseling.
