Open Thread: Game 144 - A's at Texas

Well, the good news is that football starts today! I imagine that hordes of baseball fans are jumping ship and are gratefully assimilating into the NFL madness. I sincerely hope that all A’s fans this season have a pony to root for in the NFL, because if they don’t, they are left with today’s baseball game, which sees Lenny DiNardo trying to prevent the Texas Rangers from sweeping the A’s and dumping them all the way into the cellar. Yes, the Rangers. Yes, the cellar.

Meanwhile, the A’s ‘offense’ will take on Kevin Millwood, as they try to score more runs than the Rangers.

Um....LET’S GO OAK-LAND!

the lineup

From what was posted at yahoo mlb the lineup looks like attack of the bench players.  Millwood probably got a smile on his face looking at the lineup but then again they couldn't do any worst than the regular lineup.

Play Kevin Thompson in the Cellar Battle

When I went to sleep last night, I felt kind of down about the A's possibly falling into the cellar, but woke up this morning thinking that Kevin Thompson would help save us if Bob Geren would only play him today. :>)

KT played for the Yankees (briefly) so he may have gotten a taste of that situational toughness ingrained through being flamed by the NY fans if he did something wrong. Heck, he probably got flamed when he did something right!

And, NY did waive him and keep the squirrel! Yeah, yeah... I know 'Ole Lucky is the spirit of the Scooter, and we only have the Bill King Broadcast Booth, but KT still has something to prove and Basement Prevention is a good start.

A’s please: just say NO to the Cellar!

While you're at it, are you granted wishes? I'd like some (healthy) power in the middle of the green & gold lineup for next season. And a reliable fifth starter would be nice.

Hi everyone. This is probably the last A's game

I'll see televised, so let's win this one!

It was funny last night at the game, when so many people would see me in my A's shirt and comment about how the A's were gonna lose.  Like I didn't know that. I go in expecting a loss so I'll be pleasantly surprised when they win.

on kevin thompson playing today

His inclusion in the starting lineup, just two days after being claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees, sent Thompson scrambling to find tickets and to reach family members and friends from his nearby hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. First on his invitation list were his parents, Clifford and Ruthie Thompson, who had never before had the opportunity to see their son play a Major League game. Thompson had played only 32 big league games during his seven seasons in the Yankees organization, and never was he in the starting lineup with sufficient notice to fly his parents in for a game.

what happened between swish and milton??

"You want to talk about Milton?" said Kotsay, out with a back problem. An impish look crossed his face as Kotsay pointed to teammate Nick Swisher. "That's the guy you need to talk to over there. Swisher'd love to hear any question you have about Milton."

Not really. Sometime before the A's basically gave Milton Bradley away to the Padres in late June, see, the once-warm friendship between Swisher and Bradley had gone into a sudden and unexplained freeze. If only to tweak Swisher a bit, Kotsay unsolicitedly approached him on the writer's behalf and playfully tried to cajole Swisher into granting the interview. No sale.

by gotgreen on Sep 9, 2007 1:51 PM PDT reply actions

Yup. So much for the

"Swisher misses Bradley" theories. I had an off-the-record inkling that this was the case.

Hey, looks like the A's are good at one thing: getting the other team's starter out of there in the 2nd inning without actually scoring against him!

Why was DiNardo back out after a 2 hr rain delay?

Are the coaches asleep?  There is no one on the team who still cares.  Very sad to see.  They are just mailing it in.  Why are the Rangers still playing hard?  Maybe because of Ron Washington.  Geren, get tough for once.  Do they really want a low draft pick badly enough to play dead.

How depressing.  And I still have tickets to 3 home games.  That should be great fun.

it was a treat to be able to watch

the games last night and today  -- and eased the pain a bit about the A's games at the same time.

Not to be gross

But if anyone is listening to the Rangers radio broadcast today... did the guy in the UPS comercial say "twaddle?"

by ozzman99 on Sep 9, 2007 3:40 PM PDT reply actions

I have to listen with headphones

Apperently my half-deaf girlfriend can't function properly when having to listen to a baseball game.

by ozzman99 on Sep 9, 2007 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions

LOL

I guess I shouldn't mention that she's from Texas and likes the Cowboys and country music.
Actually, she likes going to baseball games, just not listening to them.  The first game we ever went to together was A's-Rangers during Hudson's rookie season, and he beat the Rangers that day! =)

Just the Cowboy thing

is reason  enough to send her packing!

by IM4Oakgal on Sep 9, 2007 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Not yet

As a Niners fan, I had to endure a few years of ribbing about TO's antics.  Now it's time for payback.

by ozzman99 on Sep 9, 2007 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

At least

T.O. was good when he was with the Niners. I enjoyed watching him dance on the star!

I think he prolly gets more press for his words than his play now.

I'm not listening, just watching...

the Rangers feed... can anyone explain to me why everyone rooting for the Rangers is doing the flying wings angels in the outfield thing? I'm confused.

I can't help

that I'm from SoCal and I'm used to making fun of people for doing that at Angel Stadium... lol I love how I realized why they were doing it like 3 seconds after I posted this ::embarassed face::

Don't be embarassed

It's still kinda weird, don't ya think?  Couldn't they just play the music from "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" for Byrd, and call it a day?

by ozzman99 on Sep 9, 2007 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

ah wait a sec

was it just when Byrd was up? I'm OK now. nevermind.

Yaaaaaaay!!

Now we're only down by 5! I hope we score another one right now... I always feel better when we're a grand slam or less away from tying or winning. I don't even know why considering our team is not very good at getting ANY runs in, let alone 4 at once...

Not at all. Everyone at work knows I can't wait

to transfer out of here.  The only things I like are the fact they have professional sports and my really nice house that is very affordable (if you factor out property taxes - that alone is reason to move).  Of course that same house will probably take MONTHS to sell when I do move.

I was behind the Ranger's Bullpen last night

Benoit had hold of a pigeon around the fifth inning, by the seventh inning it was so frightened of being in the hands of a Ranger's reliever it couldn't move. It sat on Benoit's finger for an entire inning. That's how much fun the game was for an A's fan. :(

I took a fiend to see

the Yankees play at KC. She wanted to see Jeter. Naturally, he didn't play today. Poppy was texting me updates all day... all through the rain delay, too. I thought for sure they'd already lost 116 to 1.
