Open Thread: Game 144 - A's at Texas
Well, the good news is that football starts today! I imagine that hordes of baseball fans are jumping ship and are gratefully assimilating into the NFL madness. I sincerely hope that all A’s fans this season have a pony to root for in the NFL, because if they don’t, they are left with today’s baseball game, which sees Lenny DiNardo trying to prevent the Texas Rangers from sweeping the A’s and dumping them all the way into the cellar. Yes, the Rangers. Yes, the cellar.
Meanwhile, the A’s ‘offense’ will take on Kevin Millwood, as they try to score more runs than the Rangers.
Um....LET’S GO OAK-LAND!

the lineup
From what was posted at yahoo mlb the lineup looks like attack of the bench players. Millwood probably got a smile on his face looking at the lineup but then again they couldn't do any worst than the regular lineup.
Play Kevin Thompson in the Cellar Battle
When I went to sleep last night, I felt kind of down about the A's possibly falling into the cellar, but woke up this morning thinking that Kevin Thompson would help save us if Bob Geren would only play him today. :>)
KT played for the Yankees (briefly) so he may have gotten a taste of that situational toughness ingrained through being flamed by the NY fans if he did something wrong. Heck, he probably got flamed when he did something right!
And, NY did waive him and keep the squirrel! Yeah, yeah... I know 'Ole Lucky is the spirit of the Scooter, and we only have the Bill King Broadcast Booth, but KT still has something to prove and Basement Prevention is a good start.
A’s please: just say NO to the Cellar!
I like Thompson already
He will be cellar repellant.

not much of one. It rained hard for about 15 min
at my house
Hi everyone. This is probably the last A's game
I'll see televised, so let's win this one!
It was funny last night at the game, when so many people would see me in my A's shirt and comment about how the A's were gonna lose. Like I didn't know that. I go in expecting a loss so I'll be pleasantly surprised when they win.
Lucky you!
I wonder how far down south KFRC 106.9 FM will reach...Guess I'll find out!

You probably get better football games
Being in Cowboys country, I get the Eagles game and the Redskin game. And I'm a Jets fan.
Is it really raining? I looked out the window
towards that part of Arlington and I just don't see anything.
This is going well. Not.
Wonder why Geren put Swish ahead of Ellis in the lineup?
Oh oh, just heard thunder.
nice broken bat
too bad there wasn't a single to go along with it
Ellis' broken bat single is a 2-step process
he broke his bat on a foul ball, then hit the
next pitch into the outfield. reminded me of a broken bat single in 2 steps. I'm bored, can you tell?
Well this will make it easy
to turn my full attention to the US Open final.
Go Djokovic!
I'm rooting for Djokovic too.
Federer is amazing. But he's too good and I want some more competition! And Djokovic is such a great character.
And right now is when I miss Bill King the most.
Bill King was at his best during rain delays.
right now is when I miss the A's offense the most
... because the A's offense is at its best during rain delays.

i may have to get myself an NFL pony
(spoken from former nfl junkie, that got woke up to fact that I might as well have dressed myself in a toga on sundays.)
on kevin thompson playing today
His inclusion in the starting lineup, just two days after being claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees, sent Thompson scrambling to find tickets and to reach family members and friends from his nearby hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. First on his invitation list were his parents, Clifford and Ruthie Thompson, who had never before had the opportunity to see their son play a Major League game. Thompson had played only 32 big league games during his seven seasons in the Yankees organization, and never was he in the starting lineup with sufficient notice to fly his parents in for a game.
awww.
radio during delay is playing a game that
is the 20th game in a row that was won in bottom of 9th where they had blown 11-0 lead and kc tied in top. hetteburg hit homerun to win game

Has the strike zone box disappeared
for everyone on Gameday or just me?

a strike zone to get them out of texas and onto the next games they umped

what happened between swish and milton??
"You want to talk about Milton?" said Kotsay, out with a back problem. An impish look crossed his face as Kotsay pointed to teammate Nick Swisher. "That's the guy you need to talk to over there. Swisher'd love to hear any question you have about Milton."
Not really. Sometime before the A's basically gave Milton Bradley away to the Padres in late June, see, the once-warm friendship between Swisher and Bradley had gone into a sudden and unexplained freeze. If only to tweak Swisher a bit, Kotsay unsolicitedly approached him on the writer's behalf and playfully tried to cajole Swisher into granting the interview. No sale.
Yup. So much for the
"Swisher misses Bradley" theories. I had an off-the-record inkling that this was the case.
Hey, looks like the A's are good at one thing: getting the other team's starter out of there in the 2nd inning without actually scoring against him!
think it never answered the question about swish
and bradley
by smasfan on Sep 9, 2007 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions
hmmmm... and we all thought Nick's slump was
because he lost his dance partner.
Remind me of the rules--
Millwood picked up a chair just before the rain delay, now Francisco just threw the chair--who gets credit?
umps were stupid for waiting to call game because
it takes longer to get back to playing condition. still dark and threatening to rain

So far Thompson has
taken a called third strike, and left the bases loaded--not just an athlete, an Athletic!!!
boo :(

not so good. Come on Lenny, get some outs.
At least they're not extra base hits... :\

Well that inning was fun...
rivercats scored a run!
cats down 2-1.
runners on 2nd and 3rd, 2 out, barton up.
AND HE HITS A HOMERUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DARIC BARTON 3R HR!!
Rivercats 4, Bees 2!
Holy CRAP.
I turned away for 2 seconds. This is disturbing.
8 runs in 1 inning???
all I did was check my kid's homework. my son comes down the stairs to announce the Rangers hit a homerun because he heard that music. I wasn't expecting to see that many runs on the board.
At least it's early...
we have a chance to make it a game still at least. maybe. i hope.
just wait. way we are going we could have last

let's get some runs here!
Why was DiNardo back out after a 2 hr rain delay?
Are the coaches asleep? There is no one on the team who still cares. Very sad to see. They are just mailing it in. Why are the Rangers still playing hard? Maybe because of Ron Washington. Geren, get tough for once. Do they really want a low draft pick badly enough to play dead.
How depressing. And I still have tickets to 3 home games. That should be great fun.
aw man
I was hoping we'd close the gap there.
Well, in a thin sliver of optimism
at least leaving runners on base is marginally better than never reaching base in the first place.
Just saw where the Rangers play the Angels in a
couple of weeks. I think I'll go and root for the Rangers who will at least make the games interesting.
I have the game on the radio
but also have the Rivercats on the computer...and I'm glad I can see them today
WOo!
Putnam just tripled! It's still 4-2 'cats bottom 7th one out
Yikesss
I saw "in play out recorded" and I thought either pop up or infield out... and then I see flies into a DP. That sucks haha Hopefully their catcher is ok.
Are those of you in the bay area Raiders fans?
You should probably stick to the Rivercats game
Not looking good today for the silver and black.
Then again....
there are signs of life in Josh McCown!
hey, 17-14 now...
maybe they'll get lucky like the f**kin' Broncos did today against Buffalo. ;-)
.500 gone, time to have a new goal.
As of this weekend in my mind I have given up on .500 record. I know the A's have given up. My new goal for the team is too not finish in last.
In an hour or so they will be in last so let's go an amazing 9-9 for the rest of the year and maybe we won't finish in last.
Glad football is back.

pitcher blevins strikes out 6 in 2 innings!
going into the bottom of the 8th! Cats lead 4-2!

This is the worst game ever.
I think more of us here
are watching the RiverCats game online than are paying any attention to the big club.
Let's go Ellis
Get a hit!
the universe where
the Rangers have no pitching. Oh wait, that's this universe!
Of course, it would help if we had some guys who didn't hit like the Rangers pitchers.
going into the bottom of the 9th
in the rivercats game!
3 outs away from advancing to the next round!
Blevins too
He's been lights out in this series. Granted, small sample size, but then again there's no such thing as large sample sizes for relievers.
I'm so excited for them!
murphy kinda redeemed himself this time he threw
to the right base/person ellis

In tennis news...
they beat the Angels AAA team
the Salt Lake Bees.
and ziggy was warming up in case blevins had to come out but he wasn't needed.
New Orleans and no
Games 1 and 2 in New Orleans. Games 3 and (if necessary) 4 and 5 in Sacramento next Fri., Sat., Sun.
Ziegler threw 2-2/3 very good innings last night and got the win.
Ziggy pitched yesterday
and did very well.
Today the pitcher who most impressed me was lefty Jerry Blevins (who came over in the Kendall trade).
Good .
I hope Blevins has us crowing about the trade next year. and good info SI and Soaker about Zigs.
it was a treat to be able to watch
the games last night and today -- and eased the pain a bit about the A's games at the same time.
YAAAAY Rivercats!!!
What's black and white and red all over?
Your 2007 PCL Pacific Conference champions!!
Onward to New Orleans!!
Not to be gross
But if anyone is listening to the Rangers radio broadcast today... did the guy in the UPS comercial say "twaddle?"
I have to listen with headphones
Apperently my half-deaf girlfriend can't function properly when having to listen to a baseball game.
LOL
I guess I shouldn't mention that she's from Texas and likes the Cowboys and country music.
Actually, she likes going to baseball games, just not listening to them. The first game we ever went to together was A's-Rangers during Hudson's rookie season, and he beat the Rangers that day! =)
Nice hit
I'm not listening, just watching...
the Rangers feed... can anyone explain to me why everyone rooting for the Rangers is doing the flying wings angels in the outfield thing? I'm confused.
I can't help
that I'm from SoCal and I'm used to making fun of people for doing that at Angel Stadium... lol I love how I realized why they were doing it like 3 seconds after I posted this ::embarassed face::
Don't be embarassed
It's still kinda weird, don't ya think? Couldn't they just play the music from "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" for Byrd, and call it a day?
ah wait a sec
was it just when Byrd was up? I'm OK now. nevermind.
If it was when Marlon Byrd was up
they flap their "wings" for him
I miss winning.
That was exciting too. :(
i miss the A's actually trying to hit the ball
not just getting struck out without swinging
by smasfan on Sep 9, 2007 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions
Yaaaaaaay!!
Now we're only down by 5! I hope we score another one right now... I always feel better when we're a grand slam or less away from tying or winning. I don't even know why considering our team is not very good at getting ANY runs in, let alone 4 at once...
OK
Well I'm leaving for the Indians/Angels game tonight with my family (I'll be the lone person rooting for the Indians haha) and I'll be scoreboard watching hoping that we come back and win this somehow.
Hooray for the Rivercats! and Let's Go Oakland!!!
Boo. Federer wins in straight sets over Djokovic.
The kid put up a hell of a fight though.

I hope I haven't insulted you
Although my girlfriend is from TX, it's not a place I have any love at all for.
Not at all. Everyone at work knows I can't wait
to transfer out of here. The only things I like are the fact they have professional sports and my really nice house that is very affordable (if you factor out property taxes - that alone is reason to move). Of course that same house will probably take MONTHS to sell when I do move.
now we can strand 2! wanna bet we load the bases
and leave them that way AGAIN.
Just went on nfl.com to check the scores and
saw for the Cowboys-Giants pregame:
Eli Manning for Giants
Brad Johnson for Cowboys???? Did I miss something?
I was behind the Ranger's Bullpen last night
Benoit had hold of a pigeon around the fifth inning, by the seventh inning it was so frightened of being in the hands of a Ranger's reliever it couldn't move. It sat on Benoit's finger for an entire inning. That's how much fun the game was for an A's fan. :(
I thought that was you! Did your wife wear a
Rangers shirt?
We were a section or two left of there Friday,
and skipped today's game for the mental rest needed after playing crappy.
WTF?
I thought for sure this would be over by the time I got home. What are you guys doing?
THE SCORE! AHHHHHH!!!
5 hours we've been here.
(in between the Rivercats win, Raiders loss, etc)
I took a fiend to see
the Yankees play at KC. She wanted to see Jeter. Naturally, he didn't play today. Poppy was texting me updates all day... all through the rain delay, too. I thought for sure they'd already lost 116 to 1.

I'm going to watch, but
is there any way BOTH teams can lose? I dislike the Giants as much as the Cowboys.
This game has gone on painfully long
But I see it is time for football in Texas, is anyone still in Arlington?
They'll probably put the Cowboys game on the
jumbotron
I just want it done.
I want to forget it all. Milton, the bajillion injuries, the umpteen hundred transactions... all of it. I hope my boys enjoy the off season. I want them happy and healthy when 2008 rolls around. If they need some hugs, my basement is always open. I'll have hugs, cookies and milk waiting.
