Open Thread: Game 158 - A's at Boston
My apologies for having to the post the game thread before the lineups are out, but I trust some kind and sexy soul will add them (I'm looking at you, Blez). Chad Gaudin vs. Curt Schilling as the Red Sox come in 2 games up on the Yankees in the only AL race left to be decided.
Enjoy each moment of each game, because The End Is Near!

Manny being Manny tonight
for the first time since August 28. Also, this is the first time in his Red Sox career that he has been in the starting lineup in a spot other than 3rd or 4th in the order. (Last time in his career: Opening day in 1999, when he batted 5th for the Indians.)
Looks like they're just going to give him a couple of ABs, then replace him with Ellsbury.
thanks for mentioning this
I noticed it also as I was copying the lineup.
It will be interesting to see how this late-2007 group of A's approaches Schilling. I think Schilling's last start against the A's back in June was his best start of the entire season.
Thanks! added to diary above
why do we have to play...
at a disadvantage to the Red Sox, with only 8 players in our lineup?
I know we're the underdog, but c'mon, MLB... let us have, at least 9 guys batting.

Well, Blez would add lineups to the story
If only there weren't any African-American players starting.

He called Kendall an "eerie, placid bull."
Atta boy, Uncle Rico!
Too bad your living too much in the '82.
Damn! There's a game on.
I was so lost in the yesterdayPickUpEllisOption/todaysDLD that I almost forgot!
Has the dude even hit a triple yet?
I mean, what a slacker.
I said earlier that Baron's our savior in 2010
Now I'm going with 7 straight MVPs starting next year.
Naw--he needs to
develop some power first.
Cust in RF in Fenway?
You've GOT to be kidding. It's like the biggest RF in baseball.
What about Phonebooth Park?
Cust would need a Superman cape
to handle RF in Phonebooth Park.
Not if the CF played waaaaay over.....
oh that's right, we have Swish in centre. Yeah, you're right.
Interesting question, could our 60 day
DL list beat the current lineup? Assuming they weren't y'know injured!
I reckon so.
Probably...
3B: Chávez
SS: Crosby
LF: Snelling
CF: Denorfia
RF: Buck
DH: Kotsay
SP: R. Harden
RP: J. Duchscherer
give em DJ, Milhouse and Donnie Murphy at 2nd!
Jacob Pillsbury Dough Boy grounds out with the
with the bases loaded and two out. Too bad he didn't pop up fresh.
Dan Effing Johnson
Do something, Ghost Rider!
Hannahan looks WAY too happy in his MLB photo
<sniffs armpits>
Did I offend everyone?
I'm using this week
to adjust my attitude about teams like the Red Sox and Angels. I may not like the teams, but they sure do have a lot of good players who are worth watching. And, if I want to watch baseball through October, these are the teams I'll be watching...so I'm figuring out ways to appreciate certain aspects of these teams.
Oh I understand that sentiment
I'll watch a fair amount of postseason baseball but it's not a top priority. On the date of ALCS Game 6/NLCS Game 7, I have plans in place to be sitting in the Rose Bowl watching the Golden Bears.
why no Manny <3?
He's like Cust, but with dreadlocks and a .300 AVG.
Scutaro got scut-ar-boned, k's looking.
If your fastball is 85 mph
you had better be able to paint the outside corner. Which Schilling can still do.
who did
Donnie Murphy piss off?
He's been Melhused for a while now it seems
And what's this about Scoot not playing every day
they probably found out what
they wanted to know about Murphy.
At least Cust is using two hands now...good
Anyone can play all positions, and like Hinske,
probably not very well.

wait, 3 called strikes on Ellis?
If Gameday's strike zone is accurate, I would imagine Ellis is about to go Milton Bradley on the home plate ump.

Memo to A's batters:
The umpire is giving Schilling the outside corner. It does not matter what Questec or K-Zone or Gameday thinks. If you have two strikes on you, you're going to have to fight that pitch off, or get called out.

He's learning how to throw 200 innnings

AN is a little too bullish on Barton
I was going to post a comment under Nico's front page story, but that was more about Beane than about expectations for Barton. Pedroia is going to become the first AL rookie to hit .300 since Ichiro in 2001. Nico's statement that "the guy has what it takes to start his career hitting .300 and not look back" is probably going to be a typical sentiment that we see here in the offseason...but I'm cautious, I think his stock has risen awfully fast in a small sample of 65 plate appearances.
Old baseball maxim: "Don't fall in love in September."
Oh I've thoroughly enjoyed what I've seen too
but to stay with the stock market theme of the post, I've sensed a bit of Irrational Exuberance in many of the Barton comments I've seen here.
speaking of which
Korach has been displaying quite a bit of that irrational exuberance tonight when speaking of Barton

The timestamp updates well...
Even if the season doesn't.
Thanks. Just realized I would miss it.
Only a few games left and I have to miss one. And I can't get excited about the post season at all.

What's he at right now?
Doesn't he have one more start?
Great quote in your sig
I lived there for 14 years and they just figured out it backs up for no reason? Don't you want to just be in a helicopter and fly over the backup to see how it starts when there's no accident, no stall, and no loss of lanes?
Haha. Thanks.
I was driving to work one morning when I heard it, and the traffic guy just sounded so out of explanations. It was hilarious and I completely burst out laughing. The Nimitz is ridiculous.
I used to live off Tennyson and worked in Mt View
You know what else I like about Barton?
His choice of bubble gum instead of chewing tobacco. By far, that's the worst thing about Swish and co. I'd rather see a kid blowing bubbles at the plate than spitting all over the place. Who's with me?
Forget them. Do it for US!

Not sure why I care but the security guy who
let's Papelbon out of the gate slapped him with a "high five" as he entered the field. You are working so there is no time for hand slaps.
Jennifer- I bet that "high five" still bothers you???
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 25, 2007 6:50 PM PDT reply actions
That's called a "Pap slap".
Which of course, means that if Ellis had hit a shot straight up the box, leaving nothing but a smear on the mound, it would be called...
I don't understand the high five.

That was a huge letdown.

by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 25, 2007 7:09 PM PDT reply actions
Dan Meyers isn't very good.
Doesn't it seem obvious? I'm not sure what other
people see in this guy. He looks like another MILB great who doesn't translate to this level. We seem to have a pretty good Sactown staff for next year.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 25, 2007 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions
For sure,
we have the PCL locked up next year.
ML hitters know that he can't throw strikes so
they seem to avoid swinging at bad pitches since most of them are going to be balls anyway. Rather than sit on a fastball... they just sit on a rare strike. Bad hitters in the PCL probably lunge at his breaking stuff fairly regularly which explains his "K" numbers.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 25, 2007 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions
Just to play devil's advocate
You could say the same thing about Gaudin a while back. I'm not saying that Meyer will turn around like that, but I also think it's too early to give up on either him or Braden.
Well I would obviously love to be wrong. Gaudin
has way better stuff than Meyer IMO so I'll give him a little more latitude. Plus I've seen him succeed, while Meyer never really even impressed me in the minors. He has zero control.
Let's hope he gets it worked out in the off-season. Be sure to remind me if I'm wrong.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Meyer brings to Phoenix in February, being two years removed from the shoulder surgery at that time.
It's so nice to see Barton's the only...
...source of offense two games in a row.
Barton is the bright spot.
Buck too...but the Halos have so much young talent too. Next year is going to be all uphill climb.
Well at least we all love underdogs.
True but I'm ready for some underachievers
who are better than these guys. Imagine A-Rod in a slump with this team? No one would really ever panic.

The first ST game is vs. the Brewers in Maryvale on February 28.
The A's will play the Giants in Scottsdale on Sat., March 1 (apparently the first radio broadcast).
Suggest you call the A's and see if they have a tentative spring training schedule for you.

Anyone still here for some ST help?
Best place to stay? Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe? Where's all the fun nighttime stuff?
It's been years since I've been there
but Tempe is great (with the ASU college scene). If you're a little older, Scottsdale has lots of nice restaurants and shopping which would be appealing. Either Tempe or Scottsdale is about a 10 minute drive from Phoenix Muni.
I guess I could add...
when I've gone to ST my home away from home has been the Motel 6 in Scottsdale. But remember, you are going during peak snowbird season, so don't expect $39/night rates. And I would reserve for March 2008 very, very soon.
Thanks. I think I'm upgrading slightly
though usually I would go the Motel 6 route. Scottsdale looks like the winner.
