Open Thread: Game 149 - A's vs. Rangers
Dan Meyer gets his second shot at positioning himself to make the A’s 2008 rotation. While Dallas Braden may still have potential, he has simply not succeeded as a major league starter, and so now Meyer gets his shot at laying claim to “spring training favorite” for the #5 spot. My hope is that Meyer will mix in more sliders, a pitch that drew good reviews at AAA, to complement the fastball/changeup combination he (like Braden) has relied on quite a bit. Meyer is opposed by Kason Gabbard, who came over to the Rangers in the Eric Gagne deal and who has compiled a 6-1 record for the season.
It’s interesting to see Ellis ahead of Cust in the batting order, tributes both to Ellis’ success against lefties—and specifically Gabbard, against whom he is 4-4 lifetime—and also to Ellis’ recent success in the #5 hole. He’s earned the right to stay there for now.
The lineups:
Kinsler – 2B
Wilkerson – 1B
Young – SS
Sosa – DH
Byrd – RF
Botts – LF
Murphy – CF
Metcalf – 3B
Laird – C
Stewart – LF
Barton – 1B
Swisher – CF
Piazza – DH
Ellis – 2B
Cust – RF
Suzuki – C
Hannahan – 3B
Murphy - SS

Could this be?
149 games into the season, Geren finally realizes that some guys (Ellis, Murphy) hit left-handed pitching better than others (Cust) and should be featured prominently in the lineup? Cool!
As if any of you didn't know...
The Red Sox and Yankee's are playing in Fenway. The Earths orbital stability remains in tact...for the moment.

Hi everybody
There are more people posting here than there are at the game.
Oh, it's the battle of the Murphys!!
I notice that Marlon Byrd is 3 for 5 with a triple and a walks career against Paul Byrd. I'm not sure what that means for the Murphys tonight. Maybe they'll agree to hit the ball to each other a lot.
Young finally makes an out.
I hate Michael Young....I wish he was on the A's.
Figgins...I hate him too.
I wish he was the a's also....but only so I could see him go on the DL. I really hate Figgins.

They showed them in the dugout,

Ok I'm convinced...
Barton is the real deal. (I was hesitant to buy into the initial hype of his first game). Time to trade DJ to shore up our SP staff/provide organizational depth.

I do think that DJ will have some value come off season with the poor nature of the FA class. I know previously Minn and NY have been interested. It's not gonna be a whopper, but still he should command at least a decent return.

by Hawk on Sep 14, 2007 8:20 PM PDT reply actions
You know,
right after Mark Ellis was quoted saying he was hitting so well because he wasn't swinging at bad pitches, HE STARTED SWINGING AT BAD PITCHES. Karma's a bitch.
I may be overly optimistic..
But this team has a chance of being a huge contender with a hitting core of Buck, Swisher, Ellis, Cust, Barton, Chavez, and Suzuki... A staff lead by Danny and Joe... and a lights out 8th/9th combo of Duke and Street.
by AsWin on Sep 14, 2007 8:26 PM PDT reply actions
Hopefully you our right. If our pitching equals
this year's overall performance, it shouldn't take much more offense to increase our win total. I still think '09 is going to be a better year than '08.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 14, 2007 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions
I think
we'll be better in '08, but still not nearly as good as the Angels, unless Harden pitches a full (or most of) a season. So, not nearly as good as the Angels.
'09 should be great on the Buck/Barton front, since they'll still be adjusting/getting older next year.
My thought is that we will probably need an
extra year to find another starter or two. I just don't see Braden or Meyer being that guy but I hope that I'm wrong.
Who do you not see being with the team in '09 that is perceived to be a significant factor in '08? Ellis may not be with the team but we should have control over the rest of our team and Buck, Barton and Suzuki should all get better each year.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 14, 2007 8:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Well I was thinking that..
One of our surpluses (ex. Dan Johnson along with possibly another expendable part... Halsey??) could net us a #4 SP so that you'd have Danny, Chad, whomever we get in a trade, and then a #5 (DiNardo??). That's not that bad of a rotation with the current state of SP.
by AsWin on Sep 14, 2007 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm also beginning to like our bullpen more
when you think of the return of Duke. Casilla has potential, Brown looks like a good pickup and Lugo is starting to come around too. Hopefully Marshall will turn into a straight LOOGY.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 14, 2007 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions
I agree...
Duke coming back and continuing to be dominant will be a big improvement.
by AsWin on Sep 14, 2007 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions
More optimistic on '09 because:
- no Kotsay
- no Crosby unless he plays well next year in which case, it's sort of ok.
- Some combination of Meyer/Braden/Simmons will be good in 09, probably not it 08.
- Buck, Barton, and Suzuki will all be better in 09 than 08.
- The core pitching staff (Haren, Blanton, Gaudin) will still be intact.
- Angels less certain to be great in 08 than 09.
Sure but we have a surplus of "decent" guys
at 2B. Mellilo or Murphy could play that position but I'm still terrified of our situation at SS. Crosby really needs to have a good season next year.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 14, 2007 8:56 PM PDT up reply actions
And also..
Isn't Harden a free agent after 2008? If so, if nothing else it would free up some payroll.
by AsWin on Sep 14, 2007 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions
Club option for '09
so unless he pitches the full year, they won't keep him. (Didn't know that 'til you mentioned it, thanks for the reminder.)
Don't be so sure about us passing on his option.
BB has made several comments about how you can't find guys with Harden's potential and that "fools gold" may be pretty tempting. I know that I am certainly against it for obvious reasons.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 14, 2007 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions
I guess I didn't really mean
"pitch the full year," but if he has 5-15 starts next year, they won't pick it up (7 million). Billy can make those sorts of comments now because he's already on the hook for next year's salary, but if he's hurt again next year I don't think he'll invest 7 million in a guy who's been hurt 4 years in a row.
And then there is always the option of...
declining the option with the intent of getting him back cheaper. Now granted, off the top of my head I don't know how much his option is worth so that might not be possible.
by AsWin on Sep 14, 2007 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions
The one roadblock might be...
Danny is signed until 2009 with an option for 2010. (Which I'm assuming due to his current result that BB will pick up.) Being that we aren't the Yankees, we probably can't afford both Harden and Haren. I'd rather have Danny past 2010 (if it becomes an either or situation).
by AsWin on Sep 14, 2007 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions
No doubt on Haren. That should be an easy
decision but Fremont may enter the equation too. I would be shocked if there isn't a pretty nice product on the field to open the new stadium.

by athleticsBB4life on Sep 14, 2007 8:33 PM PDT up reply actions
Sure. He will also get 30/100 and I'm okay
with the K's as long as the BB's are still very high. In his case you just have to throw out the K's, while hoping there is a possibility of reducing them.
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 14, 2007 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions

However, if he becomes an Adam Dunn type, (35/100ish) I think we can afford to have his strikeout total up.

Is Cust a better hitter when in the DH role vs. when he starts in the field?
Anyone have stats?
by Hawk on Sep 14, 2007 8:32 PM PDT reply actions
Same is true for Swisher at 1B last time I
checked but it's probably a misleading statistic. Day vs. night seems to be more important for many players. Do you see that as relevant?
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 14, 2007 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions
It's not generally
relevant, but it could be in particular cases. There are probably a fair amount of boozers who might have more trouble in day games (offense should be up in day games generally), but you couldn't really tell that just looking at the day/night splits.
Just thought maybe..
if he focused just on hitting he would be hitting better,,but th numbers don't reflect my thoughts..Thx for the info.!

Later in the evening she finally mentions that she is married and said "you have to come over to meet my husband." I reluctantly agreed and when we arrived he wanted to kick my ass right when we walked into the door. Eventually he just lost it and ran out of the house leaving us there. One of my friend's went to Juarez by himself (we lived in Albuquerque at the time, so it's just a few hours drive). He got a hotel room in El Paso first. Well, he remembers meeting a girl in a bar in Juarez, and coming back over the border to the hotel. The next thing he remembers is waking up, his wallet gone. She left her jacket, and lucky for him, left the keys to his car.
Another time, he got drunk and peed on someone's lawn and got shot at.

This is hard to believe.
The A's actually catching breaks and scoring runs. Keeping the bases loaded and moving runners around. Obviously these guys think they are still in Sacramento.
They weren't on memo distribution about not
scoring with runners on base and no outs
THT
had an article today saying something along the lines that Billy Martin coached 30-50% of the teams with the most squeeze attempts in the last 50 years.
In the early days of BillyBall
the A's pulled a triple steal in a game against the Tigers. Something I doubt I will ever see again.
Somewhere
Pags is either crying or preparing an incomprehensible post about how that's what the A's need to do more of.
Knox just gave up 3-run HR to Tatis

A silly side run-bunt play to score a point! We. Are. So. Hot!!!!!!!!

Blevins K's Newhan headed to bottom 8th...
3 outs from PCL Championship. Will it be Ziggy to close out the game?

Hasn't he pitched the last 2 nights?
Don't know what his pitchcount was so hopefully he's available.
Doesn't anyone care about the River Cats

Replay looked like it was right to Barton

Oh man you just KNEW that was coming.
Or at least, Zonis did.
Because...
Geren's magic eight ball (which I am convinced he uses solely in choosing who should go in to pitch) said maybe... sigh.

Who pitched the ninth?
Just out of curiosity
Is there really such a thing as a rivercat? Also, here in Charleston, we have the Riverdogs. Are they a real thing?
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rivercats!!!!!
Going to OKC on Tuesday!
Wierd that the championship series...
is a one game affair.
I never knew why they quit having the AAA
World Series. They were supposed to have one in 2001 but it was cancelled because of the 9-11 attacks. Then I think they just quit (or Jake would have a world series ring from 2004)
F' Casilla...I don't want him next year
by athleticsBB4life on Sep 14, 2007 9:33 PM PDT reply actions
I dont want him this year.
It's a 3 for one special....
Meyer, Braden, and Casilla...
Think we can get Santana.. huh huh??... maybe if we send a fruit basket... fine, twist our arms we'll give you Kotsay as well... enjoy.

lol...when I read that..
I pictured Geren on the dugout steps with a high powered rifle.
At least
I'm feeling sort of confident in our offense for once
y'all realize that we are
1st in the League in starter's ERA, still.
And also about 10th in reliever's ERA.
I still say that the pen has been the biggest problem this season, and the pen is still uncertain heading into next year.
Pitching Staff next year
assuming health (hahahahahah)
Haren
Harden
Blanton
Gaudin
DiNardo
Street
Duchscherer
Embree
Brown
and choose 3 of the following:
Lugo
Meyer
Blevins
Braden
thats my guess.
Don't forget Marshall.

Why not just demote him now then and let him
go back to his original team?
by ohtobe21likehuston on Sep 14, 2007 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions
I think they like him
He just isn't ML ready, so they burned a roster spot on him and will demote him next year. Just a guess, but with Marshall and Flores, they have a couple of LH relief option if/whe Embree gets hurt.
When healthy
The rotation is excellent and the late inning guys are solid. Although I suspect that Beane will try to sell high on DiNardo this winter and replace him with either Meyer or Braden.
Woohoo...
A package of DiNardo, Casilla, Meyer, Braden, and Kotsay and Santana or A-Rod is ours. ;)
(Yes, I am joking).

Choose 3 of the following??...
Do I really have to? There's 3 out of the 4 I do not want already.
