Saturday Night Dead...

With the exception of Mark Ellis, who went 2-4 with a double, every single A's player chalked up at least one strikeout against the Scott Kazmir tonight, en route to the pitcher's career high 13 K's.

You could say you saw it coming after the A's went 1-2-3 on strikeouts in the first. You could say you saw it coming when the A's first six outs went by way of K's after 2. You might even say you could see it coming when the lineups were announced. But I had a feeling this would be ugly just by the fact the A's were playing away from home on a Saturday night.

For some reason, the A's are 0-8 on Saturday night away games this year, including tonight, falling by scores of:

Eight games. 44 runs for the opposition, 14 for the A's, and in no games have the A's scored more than 3. This means the A's are A) Partying too hard on Friday and into Saturday, B) Looking forward to Saturday nights on the town in a new city or C) None of the above.

Needless to say, it's an ugly trend.

Oddly enough, the Devil Rays drubbing of the A's tonight didn't hurt that much. As the runs started to pile up, we were numb to it. 2-0 may as well have been 9-0, the way the A's were hitting (a.k.a. not hitting).

Eventually it was, in fact, as the Rays chipped away seemingly every inning, making it 3-0 after three, 4-0 after five, 6-0 after six and 9-0 after seven. After Blanton gave way following more than 100 pitches through five innings, the A's relief corps got worse and worse, peaking in Jay Marshall's AA-worthy 5 earned runs in a third of an inning.

On the radio, the A's announcers even said backup catcher Rob Bowen was warming up in case of further disaster. At least that would have been interesting. The way I see it, if you're going to lose this way, you might as well get a position player on the mound. You might as well let 13 strikeouts turn into 17 or 20. You might as well let 14 runs turn to 30, as by that point, you're part of history. Instead, the A's just made us want to look away.

I think the real reason we were numb to it

was that it wasn't on television.

Seriously, in this day and age? Penny-ante, guys. I don't care if you have to GIVE the games away to KICU. It's not like their current lineup is setting Monday night ratings records.

I guess you don't cherish

reruns of "Scrubs" as much as some folks.

I don't understand

If the A's game had been televised, that's exactly what they would have been showing.

I agree

If

1)The A's really wanted all of their games to be aired they would be.  There is ALWAYS a way to get a game shown .

2)We might be able to convince the A's to get some of those games aired if AN would throw as big of a fit for an unaired Saturday game as they did when (God Forbid) there was an eight second radio delay.  No wonder we can't get all of the A's games on TV when fans care more about a radio delay then seeing all their games.

One has nothing to do with the other, fade2night

Throwing a fit or not throwing a fit about the radio delay was not going to affect the number of games that were televised; it was going to affect whether or not we could listen to Ken Korach do real play-by-play rather than listen to inferior "talent" doing what TV calls play-by-play.

If you want more games on TV, then throw that fit. But don't criticize those of us who took on a cause we thought we could impact and did just that.

a couple of thoughts...

1.)  If you're FSNBA, why broadcast the Friday night game and the Sunday day game, but not the Saturday afternoon game (all times local)?  That makes no sense at all.  It certainly doesn't interfere with the Fox nationally televised game.

2.)  What's happened to Casilla?  His ERA in August is 10.00 and his ERA is up to 4.54 for the year.  Ever since he gave up the game tieing bomb to Morneau in July, he's stunk up the joint.  Even Brown has become unreliable in his past few outtings.

Well, to screw up this dreary

thread, I will interject some cheer by pointing out that at least the Angels are losing.  Frank Thomas just hit a double with two RBI's.  Sciocsia is doing his usual whining....but tonight the umps are going against him anyway.

Ohhh, nice.

Now Glaus just hit a two run homer....9-2 Jays.  I'm feeling a little more chipper with every passing moment.

The A's have a chance

to do something special.

DL Marco Scutaro! The power to set the all-time injury record is within your grasp!

Don't ask me who to play in place of him, though. Well, I guess Furmaniak can take a crack at it, but I dunno who the backup would be...

They should also DL Haren--

Too healthy. It's unnatural.

is someone sticking pins in a Marco doll?

why else would he be scratched from a lineup facing a tough lefty -- Marco of the good splits against lefties -- with a sudden case of vertigo, he who is always healthy?

I guess if you want to look on the bright side. At least this game was not televised, I really didn't want to drink today...

580-582

I don't want to see the A's lose the division title...for least runs allowed.  It's getting too close for comfort right now, although Oakland has played two more games than LAAAAA.
