Monday Musings

I have a bunch of different things I wanted to mention today, so I figured I'd take the Laz...I mean Larry King USA Today way out and bullet point them.

  •  First, as we get very close to the trade deadline, I'm starting to think I want to see more of the "names" we've bandied about on AN for quite a while now.  For seemingly years we've talked about Daric Barton and Dan Meyer.  Both have had issues due to injury, Meyer more seriously than Barton, but I think I'd like to get these guys feet wet this year, especially if we're "building" towards a triumphant 2008.  I know it might not be exactly the right time, but it would be nice to get these guys some experience at the next level just to see what they can do.  Barton probably isn't going to provide a lot of power at the pro level, but he might be a perfect leadoff or number two hitter.  Meyer could be a nice addition considering opponents are hitting .167 off of him in July.  I've interviewed them both in the past and I'm just looking forward to seeing their faces in an A's uniform.  Maybe I'm just looking for a little more excitement with this team right now.
  •  I've critiqued ESPN and the family of networks before, but my criticism came mostly from the viewpoint of a myopic, disenfranchised A's fan who felt neglected repeatedly by the Worldwide Leader.  This is one of the best critiques of ESPN from a fellow SportsBlogs Nation blogger who frames the argument in an almost open-and-shut case format.  It's when I read something like this from one of my fellow SB Nation guys that I realize just how great this network of blogs truly is.  Kudos, Kyle, kudos.
  •  Jason Kendall has played four games with the Cubbies so far.  His batting average?  .091.  His OBP?  .231.  Now it isn't exactly like Jerry Blevins has been tearing up Midland or anything, but I'm just glad we can put the Kendall days behind us.  What has been more encouraging that anything is that Danny Haren threw an excellent game on Saturday after his first inning stink-o-rama and that the pitching staff doesn't seem to be weeping in sorrow now that Captain Gritty has gone to the Windy City.  I'm not a Kendall hater, but I am very glad to have Suzuki getting the majority of the work behind the plate these days.
  •  In other former A's news with small sample sizes, Milton Bradley has hit .341 and has an OBP of .413 in San Diego.  That would look really nice in the A's lineup right now.  I am starting to get convinced of the curse of Larry Davis because part of me believes that there is NO way Bradley would be in the A's lineup right now.  Still, we'll see if Bradley can play the rest of the year.  Hey, maybe he'll actually play through an injury now just to prove something to the A's and prove something to the rest of baseball since this is a contract year for him.
  •  Speaking of Larry Davis, Will Carroll brought up Rick Peterson in our conversation last week.  He brought up some of the pitching injuries and asked me if he thought that the A's injury issues had to do with the departure of Peterson as the team has seemingly gone down a path of more injuries each subsequent year since Peterson bolted for the Mets.  I thought about it and the reality is that yeah, that might explain why Rich Harden can't seem to stay healthy at all and Justin Duchscherer, Kiko Calero, Esteban Loaiza and Huston Street have all had issues this year but it doesn't explain the injury issues with the position players.  Peterson had nothing to do with that.  Do I think there's a chance that Peterson would've had a better handle on Harden's issues?  I do.  But that doesn't mean he wouldn't have had them.  I think that the health issues are bigger than just the pitching coach, but it could very well be a contributing factor.  This is, in my humble opinion as a fan, the biggest issue that Billy Beane needs to address this offseason.  You can't call this freakish luck at this point especially when the injuries seem to be a franchise epidemic that doesn't begin and end with the big league club.  How many of the A's young stars have been stunted by injuries?  Too many.
  •  Normally I would be pretty excited about the A's playing the Angels, but the A's are in such a position where even a sweep of these accursed beach balling baffoons wouldn't do that much.  The A's would essentially have to sweep the next seven games in order to really make things interesting in the AL West and that kind of mentality isn't going to get you far as a fan.  So I'm approaching the games with the Angels as wanting to be the spoilers for the Mariners as I'd happily take a Mariners division win over the Angels any day of the week.
  •  For those of you that are into baseball video games, my personal opinion after some time with both baseball entries this year is that MLB 2K7 isn't worth your time.  I much prefer the MLB 07: The Show this year even though he graphics are much weaker.  I just somehow wish that EA Sports could still make their MVP series.  There hasn't really been a good baseball game since then.  Although I haven't played The Bigs.  If nothing more, I can at least win the virtual World Series this year.
  •  I can't believe we're only a little over a week and a half away from AN Day 4.  I want to thank baseballgirl for all of her fantastic work in putting this year's event together.  I'm looking forward to seeing all of you and can't wait to get together and meet some new people that I haven't met before.  I'm also looking forward to getting some time at the Coliseum.  I miss the old concrete girl.

See you at 7 p.m. tonight as Chad Gaudin takes on Shrek and his bloated ERA in the series opener.

Larry Davis

When Nick hit the wall on Friday and Larry Davis went trotting out there, I thought 'God no, not him.  Not Larry Davis.'  Hopefully Nick went to see a proper trainer so he doesn't end up like, oh, half the team.  When are we getting rid of this cancer?!

Gritty In The Windy City

I live in Chicago and it was sort of funny listening to Cubs fans call into the radio sports shows regarding the Kendall trade.

You would have thunk the Cubs got the second coming of Johnny Bench. I liked Kendall's competitive nature, but it was very clear that his offensive stuggles may be permanent. I wish him well though.

The realist in me accepts that this season is over playoff wise. I am still excited to see if the A's can play spoiler to BOTH the Angels and Mariners.

Barton now, Meyer in '08

Based solely on looking at stats and game logs, never having seen him pitch, I'd vote for keeping Meyer at AAA the rest of the year (maybe a Sept. call-up).  He's had some outstanding games, but some very iffy ones, as well.  Some combination of Braden/DiNardo/Loaiza in the 4/5 slots the rest of the way will be fine (given the current situation).  Add Meyer and (dare I say it) Harden to the mix for '08 and there are some good options to follow the New Big 3.  I just wouldn't push Meyer at this point.

On the other hand, I don't see any reason not to bring up Barton now (unless Beane is unable to move DJ for some decent return).  I'd like to see them bat him in a non-RBI position so he feels no pressure to hit for power.  Just get on base.

Thoughts
  • While I have probably been just about the last person to FINALLY jump off the Kendall bandwagon (though I still appreciated his smarts and game calling), I cannot believe how many balls that guy caught/stopped.  Definitely something I took for granted.  I don't know if it is that Suzuki and the new guy are that bad or if Kendall was that good but there are a number of balls dropped or passed every game since Kendall left.
  • Again, I will back a player longer than most (I am still pulling for Crosby) but I was glad to see Milton go...even though he had the biggest bat in the lineup.  And it was not his attitude.  The injuries were just getting tired.  I honestly think he does not wish to play with any pain or uncomfortableness (OK, not sure if that is a word or not).
  • I actually had the opportunity to spend a couple hours with Peterson a few years back as part of some credit card promotion where a parent and child spend the afternoon with the A's pitching coach...and it was here in Anaheim.  He brought up that very topic and was very proud of the fact that his pitchers had not experienced injuries.  He went over the whole regimen.
  • Gotta at least pull off a series win for pride.  I'll be there all three games.  Hope to see you now that you reside down here.
  • Looking forward to AN Day 4 and meeting folks that I have not met yet.  Have not been since AN Day 2.

Meyer

The two statistics that really trouble me are his walks and his number of pitches per inning thrown (and I'm not saying they're unrelated).  Those two worries are probably enough to leave him in AAA until at least late August.

The guy I would like to see is Connor Robertson.  If he's healthy, he deserves a shot and at 25, he's starting to get old for a debut.

If we decide to give lots of our prospects a chance, I really think Donnie Murphy should get some MLB time at SS, and if he was healthy, Kevin Melillo deserved some at 2b. If he pitches lights out in his next couple of starts, Mike Madsen could also be an intriguing September call-up.  Brian Snyder deserves some time at AAA as well.  As for Barton, it's hard to say. If we could get something for DJ I would be willing to call Daric up and pull the trigger on the trade.  If not, let Barton force his way up the depth chart.

I'd LOVE to see Melillo and Murphy get playing

time. Meyer needs to be left alone in AAA, he's just getting back into pitching - no need to throw him to the wolves just yet.

Daily Double of "Offensive" Futility

I attended the A's games vs Seattle on July 7 and July 22 vs Baltimore. I saw a total of 4 A's hits and 0 runs in those two losses. One of the hits was a pop up lost in the sun. The most excitement in the games was the A's pitchers getting out of jams with minimal damage.

Will I purchase tickets to more games this year? Maybe a couple and only if Dan Haren is pitching. Watching the A's offense is about as exciting as watching artificial turf grow.

I take issue with one of those observations

And, to be fari, Blez, you are not the first, or even withint the first dozen people, to comment that Daric Barton is unlikley to develop power.  I checked at the Sac River Cats website, and as of friday, he had hit 31 doubles on the year.  That was a full 12 more than his closest competition.

Ordinarily, doubles in the minors are indicative of home run power in the future.  The kid is 21 years old and in AAA.  Why is it that analysts insist he will never hit for power?

The only explaination I have heard is that his swing is level, aonfering neither loft, nor backspin to the balls.

I suppose I am an optimist.  The A's tried to teach the kid 3rd base, and I expect that he can learn to hit with a little more upper cut, or that his natural age related increase in strength, will give him reasonable power at his position.

Thats all.

Mike Davis

...would be a starting OFer on this year's team. I would play the 1985-87 version of Davis in CF.

Thanks for that man

I miss Mike.  But then again, you probably knew that.

And keep in mind that occasionally miss Izzy Molina also; so it might just be a problem I have about undue love for crappy position players.  I think mainly its a question of iditification.  I cannot identify with someone who can pound the ball.  My sports career makes me a candidate to really appreciate someone who takes a very little talent and makes himself just marginally useful enough to be in the team photo at a high level.

Why did he walk Mike Davis???

That is the unanswered question:

Why did Eckerseley walk Mike Davis?

Two outs, A's lead the Dodgers in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.  Mike Davis is up, and Eck walks him.

Then the famous, or infamous, HR.  Right away, I thought, they send up a guy that can barely walk???!!

Throw at his kneecaps, pitch one and pitch two!!  Make him jump or fall down!!

Screw Milton Bradley

The coulda woulda shouldas for Bradley need to stop.  He was DFA'd by Billy and it could not have been easy since Billy was originally behind this FA signing 1000%.  And the move didn't save the organization much money either. The best theory I have heard is Billy DFA'd his rear-end after watching him sit one too many times for a marginal (aka imagined) injury.  The move was done for moral and emotional reasons. Simply put, Billy lost patience because Milt the Stilt was not helping his team when his team needed him most.

Back in February 2006, Nick Peters of the Sac Bee did an incredible piece on Milt the Stilt - up to that point, Milty had not even suited up for the Green and Gold.  Peters interviewed many from Milty's past, including his high school coach at Poly HS in Long Beach.  For the story, Milt's own high school coach offered that Milt had a reputation for faking injuries and sitting out games.  THIS WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL!  How many high school coaches rip on MLB guys they have coached?  Few to almost none.  Most HS coaches beam at the chance to talk about their alums because making the bigs just doesn't happen every day.  I believe Milty does indeed have a temper - I also think the temper is not his big undoing.  No, I think Milt has the sense to realize he was going to get paid big leage dollars whether he played or not.  And I believe he ultimately chose "not" for half the season in in 06 and half the season in 07, as he did during almost every other year in the bigs.  Billy couldn't take the BS any longer especially since the team was going down the crapper.  Posting Milt's numbers during his brief Friar stint are totally off-base - he would still be limping (possibly on the wrong foot as he did on TV in 2006) if still in Green and Gold.

the pads are just a better team right now

the NL is just a more exciting place to play baseball this year and the padres are the best team in california.  I don't blame him, if anything, ditching a losing organization is part of being a champion, harsh as it may be.

the AL is approaching possibly the most boring playoff race in the wildcard era. bos, det, cle, laa.  might as well 'tivo' to october 2.   meanwhile, there are still 8 teams very much alive in the NL pennant race, maybe 9 if you give the rockies a chance.

by notah8er on Jul 23, 2007 3:35 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

interesting

except Milty didn't get to choose the organization.  He would be a Royal right now if he hadn't faked another ab injury.  Come to think of it, maybe you are right  - maybe Milt did get the last laugh over Billy.  Nobody ever said that loser was stupid.

Very intriguing

Can't argue if the LB Poly coach said those things.  It is pretty good evidence for "things to come".

What's worse than a FUD is one who realizes everyone thinks he's a FUD, then changes his modus to remain his true self, but keep getting reprieves.

On the face of things, I liked MB and his time with the A's, but all I know is the thin surface of such things (i.e. TV and at the games).

Some snippets from the feb -06 N. Peters article

....
It cannot be ignored that Bradley has never been great over a full season and has let people down at every stage of his checkered development.

Some 10 years ago, when young Milton was a star at Long Beach Poly High, he dazzled professional scouts much as he does some general managers now - and caused some consternation to authority figures.

Bradley, at the time the best baseball player at Long Beach Poly since Tony Gwynn, disappointed Munger by shunning responsibility, resenting the coach's authority and making excuses for failure.....

"His senior year, I expected him to provide leadership," Munger recalled. "We had a team meeting, and he stood up and told the guys, 'Don't look at me to be a leader.' He just wanted to be left alone.

"I'd bat him leadoff, and when he got on first base, I'd give him the steal sign because he could fly. He wouldn't budge. I don't think it was defiance as much as a lack of confidence. He just couldn't handle anything negative, like being thrown out.

"He'd try a diving catch in center, and if the ball got by him, he'd get up holding his hamstring and acting like he was really hurt. A few minutes later, he'd bat and lay down a bunt. He was always tough on himself - a good kid who lacked maturity."

A lot of good musings in here

I agree that it makes a lot of sense to bring Barton up at or around the trade deadline.  I don't know if I'm convinced of his ability to produce consistently at the big-league level, but then again, I didn't really expect a lot from T-Buck at the beginning of the year either.  At the very least, it would be nice to see Barton in the big leagues simply to begin the process.  I have little doubt that he'll be a solid big-leaguer at some point and, well, I have to think that the sooner he's up here, the sooner that evolution will unfold.  Or so I hope at any rate.

I do agree with some of the other posters in here, though, that I'd hold off on promoting Meyer.  I've been rather enthused to see his recent development, but I too think that it makes sense to let him continue to work out his kinks.  Let's remember that he's spent the vast majority of his time in the A's organization either injured or ineffective.  Thus, as much pleasure as I gain from his current success, I'm a bit guarded in my enthusiasm (certainly more than I am with Barton).  Give him a few more months at Sacramento, maybe even some games in the Arizona Fall League, and then let's see how he looks next March.

And I must confess that I am truly surprised (although perhaps I shouldn't be) at just how many other MVP gurus there are in here.  Not only do I still have MVP 2005 still installed on my computer, but I've actually hesitated to upgrade my hardware simply because I've seen that higher CPU specs usually mean worse MVP performance.  (It sounds odd, but the game is actually more choppy on my brother's 3.4 GHZ, 1 GB of RAM machine than it is on my 1.4 GHZ, 512 RAM beast.)  It's still a fantastic game in every sense, and the customizations that are available on the PC just rock my socks.

Finally, I too am looking forward to AN Day IV.  I still can't believe I missed II and III. (especially III - I was actually in Cooperstown on a day off from the summer camp where I worked when I heard of Milton's homer.  To say that I screamed like a banshee is to underestimate just how shrill I actually was.)  It should be great to see everybody, though, and something tells me Blez will have some nice surprises up his sleeve.

In God We Trust...All Others Must Show Data

Barton, etc.

If we call up Barton, at whatever point, he should PLAY, not sit and watch and, as Blez sez, "get wet."  He is hot right now, and his hotness should be put in the lineup right away and he should play every day until he shows he is in over his head.  I think the same thing should be done with Perry---make room for the guy. He's hot, too! I don't understand how a major league club can call up someone who is on fire and then immediately put out that fire by sitting him on the bench!  REEEEDICULOUS!

"It's a cookbook!"---The Twilight Zone

by Buck18 on Jul 23, 2007 3:24 PM PDT   0 recs

I don't agree, Buck18

I think the A's should call Barton up but sit him on the bench preparing him to convert to back-up catcher. Then the A's should scrap the idea a few weeks later, but still sit him one day because a lefty is on the mound and another because it's a day game after a half moon. Then they should say, "Good night, a ding ding ding ding ding," and see how he reacts when they blurt out "FIVE! FOUR! THREE! TWO! ONE!" Then when Barton asks if he's ever going to play, the A's should laugh and say, "Heavens no--we filled the position weeks ago!"

A very funny post---or is that riposte?
Certainly points out the absurdity I was ranting about. If a guy's on fire, let him bring that fire to the A's---I know, last night we hit and scored a dozen runs.  Fun!  But, usually, we show no fire on the field, and that fire could be kindled (not Kendalled) by some fresh, hot blood. A sexual reference?  To quote Fats Waller---"one never knows, do one?"

I don't think the AAA teams

are reviewing video, scouting teams, etc. at the same intensity as the MLB teams.

Barton would be like Cust: a week or so of hot hitting (at the MOST) and then, the scouts and video review, and he'd be down to the Crosby level of play.  Even Buck had his boost, Johnson came off the DL and raked. But the scouts really have the A's figured out this year, collectively.
