Open MLB Draft Thread
I'm putting this up tonight to start out some more discussion of the MLB draft that's happening tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. PST. I'll promote it to the front page tomorrow morning.
It will be a tough balancing act, going between the first time the draft has been televised on ESPN2 and the A's looking to sweep the Red Sox and thus winning seven in a row versus the guys from Beantown. I wonder if ESPN will have Mel Kiper Jr. stop by to give his thoughts on the mistakes the GMs are making?
Any way, the A's site seems to think that Cal State Fullerton pitcher Wes Roemer might be the target if he drops all the way to 26th, which is where the A's first pick is. The A's also have the 41st pick for losing Barry Zito and the 59th pick for losing Frank Thomas. It will be much different than last year when the A's lost their first round pick because they had signed Esteban Loaiza.
Terry Steinbach will be making the A's pick. This is one of Billy Beane's favorite days of the year and I'm always anxious to see what direction the A's take because this is one of the final places where our small market team can try and exploit the market.
If you want to see an outstanding mock draft, go check out John Sickels' remarkable and prolific Minor League Ball. Here is the link to the first round.
Talk amongst yourselves.

Roemer
I haven't seen Roemer in any mock drafts this year. Especially not the first round. But I would love to see them pick him
I've seen him pitch quite a bit. Outstanding stuff. Great poise. Great control 145:7 K/BB ratio in 155 innings is insane. He is just outright dominating and effecient in doing so. I'd be happy to see him on the A's, but not follow Windsor as the second CSUF Alumni to be banihsed to AAAA.
I'll be there saturday to watch UCLA vs. CSUF. Guess there is some advantage of living in Orange County. Too bad playoffs arent free for students like the regular students. Or graduated students that still have ID's. :)

I'd like to see Roemer with the A's too
but I think he'll be around in the supplemental round so it makes more sense to go another direction in the first. BTW, I haven't been able to get a ticket for Saturday's game at Fullerton. I don't suppose you have an extra ticket?

Roemer's problem
Is that he is exactly like Windsor, a guy without a real MLB out pitch. He has great poise and control, and would be worthy of a second round pick, or perhaps a Supp 1st pick. Taking him at #26 would be a big overdraft, because there will be guys with more talent available. The A's have scouted him, but I doubt they would take him at #26 unless they really want to be cheap this year.
by BlameChannel53 on Jun 7, 2007 8:41 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'd like to add
Roemer has a lot of trouble with left handed batters, his pitch count goes way up against them. I remember a few series where the opposition was sending up pretty much anyone that could bat left handed, even freshman.
He does very well against right handers though.
I think we might be drafting Clark Hardaman as well from CSUF.
No catchers with our first pick this year?

Where can you listen to the draft online? I'm in Germany right now tending to some family business so no access to ESSPN2 for me. I clicked around mlb.com and couldn't find anything. Maybe I just missed it?
Thanks,

looks like this year it will be too.
MLB.com will simulcast ESPN2's coverage, part of its live mulitimedia coverage of the entire draft from first pick to last.

If Jim Callis is right
Beau Mills may be available at #26. If the A's got Mills, I would be very, very pleased. He is exactly what the A's need, an absolute offensive stud. He will not be a 3rd baseman in the majors, but he could be one hell of a lf/1b/DH. To get that at #26 would be a steal.
by BlameChannel53 on Jun 7, 2007 8:44 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I Wish
Don't you think the Giants will grab Mills?
by Colorado Fan on Jun 7, 2007 8:50 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I do
But Jim Callis has been amazingly accurate in past mock drafts. Callis has admitted that this year's mock draft is based on more conjecture than ever before, however, with this draft being so unpredictable. I think the Giants may screw us twice, taking Mills and Poreda before we get a chance to pick.
by BlameChannel53 on Jun 7, 2007 8:57 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not really big
on Poreda at 26, he just really worries me. I would draft him in the supplemental round, but he'll be gone by then...he's a 6'6'' LHP
by chavyfan on Jun 7, 2007 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hear you
Poreda is a risky, high ceiling pick, and I am not sure if the A's would take that risk at #26. However, projectable LHPs who throw in the mid-90's are rarely available at #26, and I would love to see a talent like that in our system. I fear he may be gone, however, by the time we pick.

- Athletics. Oakland is expected to jump on Mills, arguably the best college hitter in the draft, if he is available here. The Athletics also would consider Simmons and Roemer, and possibly Rice lefthander Joe Savery, Oklahoma State outfielder Corey Brown and Mississippi shortstop Zack Cozart.
Projected Pick: Beau Mills, 3b/1b, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho).

not about the first round but...
Joris Bert is a 20 year OF projected to go in the 10th-15th round
why do i want him?Because he's french,i don't want him to end up a yankee and have to root for the yanks,so please make my life simpler and draft him.
by J Rod on Jun 7, 2007 9:31 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Well
If he's a 10-15 round talent, his chance of ever seeing the majors is about 1/100, so you probably won't have to switch your allegiances no matter what happens. I'll cheer for the A's to pick him on your behalf, however.

Am I the only one that is scared
by what seems to be the really terrible trend developing over that last few years of a few select teams (Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Diamondbacks, and to a lesser extent Detroit) acquiring draft prospects through money rather than draft position or scouting. The Angels really were ahead of the game on this strategy, followed by the Diamondbacks. The Yankees and Red Sox, two teams that have played nice and drafted slot vlaues in the past, have now made it clear that they are going to use brute force to acquire talent throughout the draft. It seems the draft is rapidly becomeing one more place where the A's will be outspent and outmaneuvered. Long-term, it will be very hard for the A's to maintain their underdog success without draft success, because we are never going to compete in the free agent, Japan, or Latin American markets. I wish MLB would address this problem somehow, but given the union's stance I am not sure what can be done to address this problem. If the Yankees end up with Porcello at #30 I will puke, that is just disgusting, and it will be disgusting to see other top talent end up going to the big spenders in later rounds as well.

Bud Selig is ruining baseball, and without a salary cap, baseball is going to continue to go by the wayside.

Comes Around, Goes Around???
If I remember correctly, didn't Todd Van Poppel drop to the A's back in 1990 because of the "signing issue"? It was the A's (not the Angels) who started implementing this tactic.
When is baseball going to something the NBA has implemented? Money Slots for Draft Positions?

It's a Union Issue
That has to be negotiated in the next CBA. I'd really like to see it change, but when it comes to Union issues who knows
by TexasAsfan on Jun 7, 2007 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not sure
how Detroit figures into this. However, I really don't think it is that big of a concern. The development rate for early round picks really won't change all that much - it really comes down to effective scouting. And then when injuries are factored in, the early rounds are still a gamble and risk.
by IndianaAsfan on Jun 7, 2007 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
according to FSU
Billy Owens of the A's front office, talking with Marty Lurie, just said they're looking at college guys for their top picks, and looking more at the "high school high ceiling types" in the later rounds.
Of course this is probably just the disinformation Beane told him to spread.
it will be interesting to see if we do go after college guys early and high schoolers later on.

Yawn
Wow, this is such a mockery of the real draft. These teams don't need more than 60 seconds TOPS to make their pick at this point. What are they doing? Relooking at video? Come on now, it isn't like they are trying to work out a trade.
I am sure ESPN just told them to wait their full 5 minutes before selecting. God forbid these guys have video of the players.
Sorry for being negative, but a real yawn-fest so far. Glad the A's have a day game so i can half watch the draft tracker instead of the "real" draft.

This is really boring! In two hours, we are not even going to get to the A's at this pace.
by BlameChannel53 on Jun 7, 2007 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is just a precursor for future years, they
know it is probably going to be a snoozefest for most, but when the MLB channel on cable goes live in '09, and they play more college games, and people can see the players more before they are drafted, it might get better.
by theblackpearl on Jun 7, 2007 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
short term it's may be boring
but this is a great move for MLB for the long term.
five minutes means the analyists get to discuss each player, show some video, interview the guy. that's what you need for the draft to be a legitimate television event.
by xbhaskarx on Jun 7, 2007 11:30 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Video?
I think I've seen about 15 seconds of video of the players so far. The rest os Phillips and Gammons talking about generic baseball stuff like development, etc, and are just spewing the generic statements most people already know (pick based on need, high school players take longer to develop but have more upside, etc).
Maybe I am being hard, but come on, I really enjoy the draft, but this is crap.
by Brian Durack on Jun 7, 2007 11:33 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think what X means is in the future, they will
have more video. College Baseball still isn't televised all the time like College Football, or Basketball. They will struggle in this first year, but hopefully next year will be better.
by theblackpearl on Jun 7, 2007 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yes, THIS YEAR.
do you think there will be only 15 seconds of video in 2010?
by xbhaskarx on Jun 7, 2007 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
so..
So they are rolling out a crappy product to drum up enthusiasm for future drafts? I can't see anyone, especially 2 or 3 hours in to this thing, saying how much they can't wait for next year's draft. These guys aren't talking a lick about the actually players. Maybe this is entertaining to some people, but I just don't get how the casual baseball fan can really be drawn in by this.
by Brian Durack on Jun 7, 2007 11:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
getting excited over minor leaguers
I can't see how the televised MLB draft will ever attract as much attention as the NFL or NBA drafts. The simple reason is that none of these guys, even the top picks, will be in the majors next year, or the year after that. Only the very hard core of fans are going to be interested in guys who won't contribute to the major league team for at least two years.
by colin on Jun 7, 2007 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that if MLB makes a concerted
effort to partner with and televise college ball, particulalry the CWS, the draft is going to be a lot more relevant. With the new baseball channel, that may just happen.
by salb918 on Jun 7, 2007 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh and..
..not to mention that they are giving the "big name" ESPN guys (Ravich, Gammons and Phillips) 90% of the face time and the guys who actually know something about the players (like Law and Callis) the other 10%. I love Gammons, but this isn't really his field, and the other 2 jokers of course don't know a damn thing.
by Brian Durack on Jun 7, 2007 11:31 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
it'll be interesting to see
if they continue to do that when the top guys are all off the board. do they go to law and callis more at that point?

He sounds like another
Windsor or Blanton. Doesn't have stuff that's blow people away, but has a plus change. He has a big frame though, so maybe he gains a few MPH as he gets stronger.
by Tyler Bleszinski on Jun 7, 2007 1:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He will
And I like his mechanics from what ESPN has shown. Granted it was 15 seconds and about 5 pitches, but he's balanced throughout the motion with an active front side. That means it is likely that they'll be able to add some MPH, and he has minimized the stress on his shoulder/elbow.
by IndianaAsfan on Jun 7, 2007 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Very unlikely
Most college pitchers lose velocity when they move from pitching every 7 days to pitching every 5 days. Blanton, for example, lost 2-3 mph from his college days, as did Windsor. There are exceptions to this rule for projectable guys. Simmons is not a projectable guy from scouting reports I've seen and heard, and is morel ikely to lose velocity than gain it. That doesn't mean he can't turn what he has into a productive MLB career, but his ceiling is definitely on the lower end for a 1st round pick.
by BlameChannel53 on Jun 7, 2007 2:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
88-92 mph now
simmons can't afford to lose 2-3 mph. ugh

So he may keep his velocity.
by BlameChannel53 on Jun 7, 2007 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Who came up with this?
There have been plenty of guys add MPH when they pitch in the minors. Are you saying Blanton touched 95 in college? No he didn't.
You can't just say that projectable guys are the only ones who add MPH to their fastballs, it is simply an over generalization.

Yes, Blanton did touch 95 in college
Look up his old scouting reports if you don't believe me. I never said no college guy ever adds velocity, any blanket statement will always be wrong and I will never intentionally make a blanket statement; players are individuals and have to be treated as such. Most college starters lose velocity, if you don't believe me do your research and it will confirm what I said. Simmons is a tall, strong guy and it is not impossible that he could add some velocity, but every scouting report I have seen on him (10-15, I'm lucky enough to have some pretty good contacts within the scouting community) thinks he will not add much, if any, velocity.
by BlameChannel53 on Jun 7, 2007 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There's a difference
If your theory about college pitchers losing velocity because they have to start throwing every 5 days held, it would be even more pronounced for high school pitchers (who only throw once a week). Some scouts may not think he'll add velocity, that's fine. There were many scouts who thought Swisher was a AA player at best, and one I talked to who thought he maxed out in college. The point is it's no more unlikely that he'll add velocity than it is he'll "lose" it. The potential is there to add a couple of MPH.
Here's what I see (and some scouts agree with me) - he is a guy who commands the fastball better than anyone else in college or high school. Therefore, he doesn't have to give up velocity to gain more command. Second, he throws loosely and easily, which is different from Windsor, who was a "maximum effort" guy in college. Third, his frame can hold more weight. He's a tall kid with a somewhat thin body. Now that he'll be in baseball exclusively (no classroom requirements) and under a professional training program (ok, arguably professional training program ;)) he can add weight and strength which could very well result in added velocity.
by IndianaAsfan on Jun 7, 2007 3:11 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
100% agree
Blanton could absolutely still throw 95 if he wanted to , and he is smart not to. He pitches more often now, and against better competition, so he doesn't throw 95 anymore because it would be counterproductive to do so. That is exactly why most college pitchers lose velocity in moving to the pros. Your opinion on Simmons is reasonable, and given his body type and mechanics, he may gain velocity, or at least maintain his velocity. He would be bucking the odds to do so, however. btw --many high school pitchers do lose velocity, which is why you see so many high school guys drafted as high 90's throwers who end up as mid to low 90's pitchers upon arriving in the majors.

Windsor's problem seems to be that his only plus pitch is the change. Let's hope Simmons can develop his breaking stuff a little better.

sounds more like windsor than blanton
i wonder what sickels/BP/BA think of his slider because there's some disagreement:
MiLB draft report:
"Simmons has a slider, but it grades out below-average."
whereas according to rotoworld:
"Simmons gets some sink on his low-90s fastball and shows a plus slider, giving him middle-of-the-rotation potential."

Upside = Joe Blanton, Downside = Jason Windsor?
I'd take that.
Personally, I think all these high school arms who throw mid 90's are way overhyped. First of all, half of them will blow out their elbow/shoulder and never sniff the bigs. Secondly, high school guys are 4-5 years away from the majors; I'm happy with a guy who could help in 2-3.
I know people will cry about the A's taking another finesse pitcher with no upside, but a 116-to-15 K/BB ratio is outstanding.
And Porcello wanted a $10 million major league contract. No thanks.

Signing Porcello is going to basically require the A's use their entire draft budget ($10-15M or so?) given his comps (Beckett) and his agent (Boras). Would I rather draft him and not sign anyone else for 50 rounds? God no.

John Manual likes Simmons
check out the 5/18/07 baseball america podcast. John Manual picks James Simmons as "his guy." Granted he only scouted the west and limited his favorites to that region, but still...
I think this is a good pick. The A's been very successful with "safe picks," so why not continue that trend? Plus, with all the high schoolers going early, Simmons fell to us (He was typically slotted as a late first rounder, usually going to the Pads at 22)
I'm sure we'll get higher risk/reward guys later. Remember, we have four before the third round.
by gojohn10 on Jun 7, 2007 1:50 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
The other thing that
people need to keep in mind is that Billy has taken some younger arms recently that are taking time to develop. This makes sense in getting a pitcher that can get to the bigs a little faster and can ultimately be trade bait if the A's need it.

Compensation picks
I think its lame that the giants get so many compensation picks for Schmidt and Alou and we don't get one of their firsts for Zito. The rules should change so that if a top 10 team signs a player as a FA and gets a compensation pick for a FA loss they should loose their compensation pick to the team who lost the FA. E.g. A's would have gotten the 22 pick for loosing Zito.

draft report
http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/m...
Summary:
Doolittle has excellent hitting skills and should hit well for average as a pro. An athletic first baseman with good hands, his draft status may depend on how much power scouts think he will hit for at the next level. He's a safe, solid draft pick who should have a big-league future. He was a two-way player at Virginia, but most scouts see him as a hitter and not a pitcher.

The A's believe in guys who have the discipline
and eventually will develop the power. That's what the pick of Buck was all about and that's working out nicely. People questioned whether Buck or Ethier might develop enough power as well and they did.

They have?
Ethier, with the .138 ISO? With the .272/.310/.424 line?
I've got faith in Buck, he's got a great ISO and the naked eye confirms that he's got a good powerful swing as well. But for Buck, theres Pennington and Putnam and Powell and Snyder who never did develop any power, who seemingly peaked in college. I realize why Beane does what he does, but at the same time I feel that if we want to compete with teams like Boston and New York and Los Angeles, if we want to win a World Series, we need to develop elite hitters. A guy like Robnett didn't pan out, no, but at least he represented someone with the tools and potential to be an elite power hitter who could fill the middle of a lineup.

horton
http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/m...
why do we want this guy?
Power: There is not much power in Horton's swing.
Running Speed: He's an average runner...
Arm Strength: The arm strength grades out as average, maybe a tick above.
Range: He's not the prototypical defender at short, and his speed doesn't play well in terms of range...
Weaknesses: There's little power and little to project. He doesn't necessarily wow you at short...

Answer: average.
He hits for a good average and has nice bat control.
No superstar, but no slouch either.

the .209 average on cape cod is worrysome.
hopefully he can adjust to wood bats, and hopefully that was the problem, not not being able to handle the pitching...

since when do the a's care about batting average?

It's the new 'injury prone'.
Which was the new 'under the radar school'.
Which was the new 'high school pitcher'.
Which was the new OBP.

Boy do I despise the Brown pick...
He was going to go to UVA util this....
The University has rescinded its offer of a scholarship to baseball recruit Corey Brown of Tampa, Fla., after he agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge of battery Monday.
In a statement released last night, the University attributed the scholarship's removal to Brown's "current personal circumstances."
This announcement comes only one day after Brown, a senior at Plant High School in Tampa, Fla., admitted he was among a group of four boys charged with third-degree felony battery, according to the Tampa Tribune. The charge stems from an incident on the night of Sept. 21, 2003, when the four friends allegedly had sex with the same 14-year-old girl in the back of a parked SUV, the St. Petersburg Times reported.
After the case was initially investigated as a "lewd and lascivious" act on a child, State Attorney Mark Ober and the defendants agreed to a plea bargain, whereby the boys would plead guilty to a battery charge in exchange for a probationary sentence requiring no jail time.

heh.
figures that he went to ok state then. and that he didn't get drafted. then again, this is 4 years ago, when he was a 17 y/o HS senior. hopefully he's learned in college.

I was going to say the same thing
that I hope this was just a really stupid mistake in the past and he's a better person now...
but I just stuck with "yikes".

Not quite
as bad as it sounds from the initial description.
Sounds to me like a case of alcohol, promiscuity, and stupidity. Story clearly characterizes the sex as consensual, but victim lacked capacity to consent due to age and possibly also alcohol and/or mental health.
That there was no physical coercion is some comfort to me. It makes me more hopeful that it was a case of youthful stupidity that one can grow out of, than I would be if it had been violent rape.
Still icky, though.

whenever they sign.
TCU's out of the tournament, so theoretically he could sign whenever, or since he's a junior... he could never sign.

another junior.
i think it's been all juniors so far. .234 oba isn't bad, especially with the ratio of singles and xbhs noted below... 3.87 era last year, but 2.09 frosh year. cape cod all-star last summer; state PoY senior year of HS.

hey, another junior...
started closing last year; Connecticut HS PoY senior year; consistently high k/ip ratio, even in cape cod...
by Jjjsixsix on Jun 7, 2007 5:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
from the scouting report...
Fastball: Carignan has a good fastball, throwing it in the 88-92 mph range.
Slider: Right now, his slider is below average.
Control: Carignan's command is below average right now.
Strengths: Arm strength, good fastball, poise.
Weaknesses: He's a one-pitch guy right now.

reminds me of Huston in his description haha
smallish right handed closer with a bulldog mentality and excellent poise on the mound

oh ok
I wasn't sure. I thought I remembered them saying they were stopping at 6, but I couldn't remember if that was a TV thing or a draft thing.

draft thing...
they did like 15 day 1 last year. before it used to be about 20-25?

wow
I was going to say it is surprising they only got to 5 rounds today, but the first round took forever. Tomorrow should be interesting!

everyone picked is a junior...
might be some signability issues down the line, so hopefully they've done their research, and the money's there. anything like smoak will not make a happy a's fan.
won't be around tomorrow to dig up info on our 38th round pick last last year, sorry.

Why not happy?
Hi
Let me start by saying I do not follow college or high school baseball, and only start looking at the draft on the day of the draft. I do get Baseball America and offen look to them for info. With the draft over I thought that it was interesting that the A's picked 8 players that were on Baseball America's Top 100 (29, 47, 64, 70, 77, 86, 91 & 99) and given that the A's picks were 26, 41, 59, 75, 91, 121, 151, 181 I thought we did ok, given how Beane is likely to stay away from hard to sign (Boras) players. Am I missing something.
Thanks
Dougald1
