Padres acquire Milton Bradley

[EDITOR'S NOTE:  The Milton Bradley saga is now over.  Bradley has been traded to San Diego.  I wonder what kind of reception he's going to get in Los Angeles?  Remember, Bradley is a DePodesta guy and DePo now works for the Padres. - Blez]

Per Rotoworld:
The Padres have reportedly acquired Milton Bradley from the A's for a pitching prospect.
It could be a very nice pickup if Bradley shows up and is ready to play, and if not, well, the Padres can still get by with Jose Cruz Jr. and company in left field. Bradley likely will get a chance to play regularly , leaving Cruz with far less playing time for the short-term.

SD is a much better place to play than KC is.

Have a feeling Milton will magically heal from his last injury.

I wonder what "pitching prospect" we'll get

in return for Bradley? Better than Nunez?

Prospect

I am killing myself looking for who we got for him, especially since I know a little about the San Diego minor leaguers.  Not sure if they just don't know who it is, or they just don't care enough to say who it is.

Not Flores

He should make the team; you don`t have to be better then Ron Flores, just Collby Lewis.

way to stay positive

I agree with you guys.  I'm kinda sad to see old Milton go, he hit great against the Twins in the ALDS. But had too many injuries... too much up and down.

but with Kielty, Barton! and Piazza in the minors, we've got plenty of hitters coming up.  Just gotta catch the Tigers/Indians for the Wild Card....

by thunt on Jun 29, 2007 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I got this through

SBN blog Gaslamp Ball, but apparently it looks like Bradley may make his first start with the Padres at Dodger Stadium.

That makes it intriguing.  I wonder if he'll throw bottles at anyone?

Oh and yeah, that oblique injury suddenly seems all better now that Kansas City isn't involved.

RHP Andrew Brown

A comment made in the thread you linked to suggests that the player was RHP Andrew Brown.  He is a reliever at Triple-A Portland who has a 2.78 ERA this year with 43:15 K:BB in 35 2/3 innings.  His career numbers are very good as well.  I think this makes it (assuming this IS the player we got, which certianly hasn't been confirmed) third time he has been traded since he was drafted in 1999.

Honestly I am just happy we didn't get stuck with nothing but his salary.

by dbuzi123 on Jun 28, 2007 9:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh come on
Most of us would kill to play in the majors, regardless if it is KC.  But, it is not like it was going to be an eternity.  He is a free agent after this year so he spends 3 months in KC gets a cool 2 million and listens to KC sell him on the city and try to over pay him for the next 3 years.
ogallalabob

by ogallalabob on Jun 29, 2007 9:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Playing in KC would've been almost ..

... like playing in the Majors.

I suspect that he faked it, hoping for a better deal like this one, or that he would pass through to free agency.  As an A's partisan, I don't like that he did it, as we presumably would have rather had that KC reliever.

But on my dark, MachIavellian side, I have to admit to  some grudging admiration.  It was a gutsy bargaining move that ended up making him likely better-off, and presumably us only slightly worse-off, we think.

I hope we use the $2 million

to sign the signability guys we drafted in later rounds.  An extra $2 million spent on the draft would be a nice addition to our minor league system.  Of course, it would also be great if the $2 million is used for more golden pacifiers for Wolffish's grandbabies, because a baby can never have enough of those.

Which is a better average than 2 of the A's outfielders, I guess they would put him on the bench so that the guys with lower averages could start instead.

Kansas City

My take is that the Royals are a franchise that is starting to lose it's fans, have a bunch of young players and have some money to spend and are now more concerned about puttting a competitive team on the field then to continue to play for a future that may never come.

It is important to give the young players hope that the team can compete (if you want any shot to re sign them) and winning games may make them more attrative to freeagents.  They are in the Tigers position a few years ago when the Tigers went out and admittedly over paid for free agents.  The Royals have had a hard time getting free agents to sign.  They had to over pay for Meche and take guys other teams did not want.  I think they really wanted Bradley, to see if he would not want to stay long term and help the younger guys learn to win some games.
