Open Thread: Game 53 - A's vs. Twins
The Minnesota Twins probably don't believe that Mark Kotsay was ever gone. Kotsay was racing around the bases hitting inside-the-park HRs the last time these two teams met, and he's in the lineup tonight.
The A's send Joe Kennedy to the mound, hoping Kennedy can bounce back from his first poor outing of the season when he was knocked around by the Orioles. His opponent is a guy named after Bengie Molina: Kevin Slowey, who will making his major league debut.
The lineups (featuring "The Killer C's" for Minnesota):
Castillo
Cerillo
Cuddyer
Morneau
Hunter
Redmond
Ford
Punto
Bartlett
Buck
Swisher
Bradley
Johnson
Chavez
Crosby
Kotsay
Scutaro
Kendall

Slowey, eh??

Looks like a candidate for word play, as in

Ellis again not in there
the new baby or the knee? or both?
Geren hasn't gotten around yet to switching Chavez and Crosby in the lineup.

Cust
Bummed if Kotsay coming back means Cust becomes a bench warmer. Cust has had a tough few weeks but still is near or at the top in a number of team offensive categories. While Kotsay may be a defensive plus, if it means Cust doesn't play anymore then in the long run it's a big offensive minus. Look at this way, what pitcher wouldn't rather face Kotsay than Cust?
by SA on Jun 1, 2007 7:04 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
He will be back.
Besides, it was Swish who displaced DJ who displaced Cust.

My first A's game in Honduras
I'm a huge A's fan serving in the Peace Corps in Honduras. One of the things I've missed most since coming down here four months ago is watching A's game. But I was channel-surfing today (I have cable TV, but no running water, go figure) and found this game being broadcast live on Fox Sports! I am a very happy camper right now.

by Christine on Jun 1, 2007 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I recommend it
I'm really happy with the experience so far. The Peace Corps is a big bureaucratic government organization with all the inherent drawbacks, but the bottom line is that they provide the volunteers with the opportunity to help a community and have a unique and life-changing experience. If you're curious you can check out my blog at http://raph-in-honduras.blogspot.com or email me at raphael.crawfordmarks at gmail dot com.

Blame Pittsburgh
Back in 2001, the Pirates gave Kendall a stupidly over-generous seven-year contract.
We were willing to take on the last three years of the contract only because Pittsburgh agreed to pay some of it and we also unloaded a couple of overpaid players on our own roster.
In retrospect, it looks like even that was not worth it, but the bigger mistake was on Pittsburgh for giving him the contract in the first place.

If Calero's in, I'd pretty much say
Good decision to let Kendall bat. Why waste a pinch hitter and take Kendall out of the game at catcher when there's a 75% chance the inning will end with the pinch hitter? Kendall's play blocking balls in the dirt is a big reason we're still playing, btw.
by Nico on Jun 1, 2007 9:42 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you....
I think Kendall is one of the worst players in the whole entire league, but I would let him hit there. THey weren't going to win it that inning.
HOWEVER... we maybe should've taken our chances to win because Calero is no good.

by FreeSeatUpgrade on Jun 1, 2007 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
good point.
If scutaro gets on, there's only one out and someone pinch-hits.
With two out, you're likely going into extras, and the A's still get a chance in the bottom of the 10th with the top of the lineup, the defense isn'c compromised at home plate.
by JR on Jun 1, 2007 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
lol
.500 record with half a ballclub, and you want to fire the man. If Steinbrenner's not firing Torre, there's no chance Geren's getting fired during the season.

I doubt she was serious

by FreeSeatUpgrade on Jun 1, 2007 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Game calling
I'm getting kind of skeptical about this "Kendall calls a good game," which the Twins announcer just said as what appears to now be the only rationale for playing Kendall. It's not the like A's pitchers have 17 pitches to choose from. Most of them have 3 pitches, maybe 4, and generally only 2 of them do they throw very well. I just think anyone who studies the hitters a little from video/scouting reports and is of average intelligence can call a game reasonably well. Besides, the pitcher always has the option of changing the call to the one he's most comfortable with and it's hardly traumatic if that happens once in a while.

Goes to show what the team could look like when healthy.
I like it.
Sure, we still stink at RISP, our bullpen is still on a crisis medivac flight to John Muir cause Oakland and Richmond can't field the hospitals it needs to go with its shootings, but hey, maybe we'll still get lucky and have the team we hoped for by July.
