ANer just recieves baseball scholarship!!
Hello AN this is my first Diary.
I am a red shirt freshman baseball player from Sierra JC and I am going to Long Beach State this fall on a baseball scholarship. I am an athletic six foot ;) 165 lbs right handed pitcher with a low three quarter arm angle(a little lower than Pedro). I am a reliever as of now but wouldn't mind starting. I throw my two seamer(sinker) 86-91 mph with a slider and a developing change-up. My final stats for Spring 2007 are; 47.1 ip, 34 h, 14 bb, 44 k's, and a 2.28 era. I've heard that I may be drafted this year, the number 30th round has come up from someone but I'm not banking on getting drafted.
After reading "Gettin' Ziggy With It" I felt compelled to tell my own story of my baseball. How many fellow ANers play college ball?
Go A's! hey draft me Billy!!

Awesome
I went to LB State (just graduated last fall) and I go to games as often as I can. It would be cool to hear a bit of what it's like for a player going through the college baseball system, since I don't personally know any. Good luck with everything!
Oh and your 6ft comment made me laugh a bit, it seems like just about everyone on the team is under 6'. :)

Did you see the Riverside players last weekend?
They were HUGE.
I was over by their dugout after Sunday's game as the kids run the bases and get a ball. I was walking by these guys as they were headed for the bus and I swear just about every player was over 6'2"/6'3".

Thanks
I was not recuited out of H.S. being that i was a shortstop with no power. I had a good arm so i decided to become a pitcher and things feel into place after that. Thanks again. I'll probably write a post when I leave for summer ball in Alaska.

summer ball in Alaska?
Wow, that's pretty intense. They should schedule June 21st games for like a 1 AM start...hopefully the sun will be shining brightly.

Congrats
Good luck to you. I hope to hear more about your career.
Sierra as in Sierra college in Rocklin?
I went there years ago when they still had a mens track and cross country program. I ran there for two years before I went to University. So good luck to you from another former wolverine.

Congratulations!
I agree with drmmerchk... if you have time, you should write a sort of college version of the "Gettin' Ziggy With It" insider posts once in a while :)
(As long as it doesn't interfere with your studies... of course I have to add that, I'm a mom...)
Good luck and stay healthy!

I can't tell...
whether that admonishment is also a mom thing, or just an A's-fan thing. I'm thinking the latter.

way to go
You're so lucky. Enjoy every minute of it. I never got past Legion ball (kind of semipro ball for rednecks) in Pennsylvania but playing baseball at any level sure is fun when you're young.
However, as a word of caution, avoid playing baseball when you're old. I started playing in a "washed up" league for 35 and over in San Francisco a few years ago, and it was awful. Most of the guys were WAY out of shape, but the pitchers could still throw hard- but with little of the accuracy which they might have had when they were younger. The first game I played in the first three guys got nailed by 80+ mph pitches! Just pathetic.
It'd be cool to read some diaries about your baseball experiences. Good luck with your future hall of fame career!

Wow
Thanks guys and "moms" I'll try to stay off the DL, haven't had a problem with injuries yet, fingers crossed. Sierra college as in the Wolverines in Rocklin, they still have women's cross country.
No I didn't see the riverside game (was it on T.V. ?), but I'm sure those guys are tall, especially the pitchers.
Brian in 317, thanks for the heads up with the beer league story. I am lucky and I hope my playing days aren't numbered because I hate beeer.
I'll keep you guys updated on how baseball is going this summer in Alaska.

The Anchorage Bucs
I'm actually in contract with the Danville Dans in The Central Illinois Collegiate League as of now but the Bucs are trying to get me out of the contract. The Bucs invited me after the Dans, but Alaska is a better league so hopefully I can get in.

Look forward to seeing you
I am an alum and usually hit Blair Field on Sundays with my two boys (kids get in for a buck on Sundays, run the bases after the game, and get a Long Beach State baseball).
Not sure how familiar you are with the school. Great baseball tradition - Crosby, Giambi, Weaver, Trachsel, Jeremy Reed, Troy Tulowitzki, Evan Longoria...
The Dirtbags are a good young team this year but a little lacking in pitching compared to years past. Hopefully, you will help turn that around...not to set high expectations or anything.
It is a great pitcher's park though.
Good luck man. See you out at the ballpark.
Is Brown your last name? Perfect for a Dirtbag.

I know
that LB has produced some great players, and a lot of pitchers recently. My last name is Brown and I hope I can come in and help out the pitching staff right away. Thanks

Good luck...
Good luck at LBSU except against UC Irvine!! The 'Eaters are ranked #10 in the Baseball America top 25. They actually have a shot at hosting a regional this year.

Just wanted to say...
good luck to Irvine against UCR this weekend. That should be a good series.
It's really awesome that so many schools in the Big West are doing better this year. We should have 4 teams going to regionals this year I think.

Thanks for the Luck,
one of my Sierra College teammates is going to Irvine on a scholarship this fall. You and him will be disappointed next year.
