Open Game Thread: Game 44 - A's at Chicago
The A's and Joe Blanton with a 4-1 record and a 3.32 ERA takes on Jose Contreras and his 3-4 record and a 3.64 ERA. It's funny how baseball works sometimes. Blanton has the best record of any starter and he has the worst ERA of any of the guys not named Braden. Course with the A's starting pitching this year, that is sort of like saying you're the ugliest lingerie model at a Victoria's Secret fashion show. Even though you aren't the best, you're still pretty damn good. It's also deceiving because Blanton has a pretty darned good K:BB ratio.
It also shows how ridiculous the win statistic is to measure a starting pitcher. Any way, if you think the A's offense has struggled this year, welcome to the South side of Chicago where they've scored 35 fewer runs than the A's and the team batting average is .226 and the team OBP is .305. Don't let that lull you to thinking it'll be an easy win though. They still have good sluggers and Dye has three home runs in his last four games.
The A's offense for tonight's game looks like this:
Stewart
Swisher
Johnson
Cust
Chavez
Crosby
Buck
Ellis
Kendall
I've just got to say, I love Bob Geren. He's willing to make the adjustments to the lineup to reflect performance on the field. I really like this lineup a lot and Chicago can be a good hitter's park. Let's hope our boys get to Contreras early and often. Chavez and Crosby have had some success against Contreras in the past, so we'll see if that continues tonight.
The White Sox lineup looks like this:
Erstad
Iguchi
Thome
Dye
Konerko
Pierzynski
Ozuna
Mackowiak
Cintron
AssJack and Dye have hit Blanton well in the past.
LET'S GO A'S!!!!!! Please let it not be Hawk on MLB.TV, pretty, pretty please????

Hmmm - is Bradley going to play in this series?
Or is he still hurt? :(
by Randy Bell on May 21, 2007 4:59 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm sure he's headed closer and closer towards
the Dead List. Bradley, please don't go towards the light. Please... damn it! Do you have to lick the light? You're doing that just to mock me, aren't you.
I like this batting order
We've got a real lead-off hitter and two sets of sluggers, the 2-3-4 big slugger guys and the 6-7-8 mini-sluggers. The two offensive black holes, 5 and 9, are separated from each other so they won't kill too many rallies.
It's about time for Swish to get over his haircut and play some ball. The folks batting around him will hopefully lift him up a bit.
And where's Bradley, still in the Witness Protection Program?
White Sox last in runs scored
Love that!
And everyone things it's a mystery. How about looking at some of the idiot decisions (like bring in Erstad) and idiot obsessions (like small ball) of the manager.
Guys like Bruce Jenkins in the Chronicle love mocking statheads, but they're totally incapable of acknowledging what Dusty Baker did to the Cubs starters and what Ozzie was certain to inevitably do to the White Sox (who, I realize, aren't really that good).
Bradley/Harden should be taken behind the barn
to put them out of our misery. And Milton is probably my favorite player on the team--after Cust, who should be everybody's favorite player.
Bradley is my fav player as well..that's what
sucks the most. I just love watching the guy play and I think he makes this team 100% better when he's in the lineup.

Good lineup
Until he cools off Cust should always hit before Chavez.

Bradley bobblehead day coming up
will the doll have an arm in a sling? Or maybe crutches?
I hate to say it because he's a marvelous presence the 2 games a month he actually plays, but he'll never be healthy and needs to go when the contract is up after this season. We can't afford this, we have to put the money where the guy is gonna play and not sit with injury after injury.
so sad but true

I dont care about DJ's speed
DJ was at second base when that ball went over the outfielder's head and it wasnt Dye either with a strong arm. 2 outs, a chance to go up early, you got to send the runner.

monkeyball will fight you for saying that
He's on the Chavvy-is-clutch bandwagon.
nah, i'm on the there's-no-such-thing bandwagon
I do think Chavvy should be dropped behind CRosbyt in the lineup -- if he's hitting behind Cust, Cust will NEVER see another fastball.
No such thing as clutch
but such thing as non-productive? I can live with that.

Like I said
We need somebody behind Cust who can hit.
The Great Eric Chavez
The Mike Dunleavy of the Oakland A's.
Please, please get Ned Colletti on the phone. And then fleece him for LaRoche and some pitching. I would welcome that.
And when he hits 25-30 HR's
I just wish we had the luxury of batting him in the 6/7 hole.
just as long as we don't trade Chop
for Ron Artest, I'm cool.
by emperor nobody on May 21, 2007 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions
That's the thing, isn't it.
We've been spoilt rotten by his defence. He's worth his place in the lineup alone for that.
At this point I really don't expect much from Chavez offensively - some power numbers and a few walks.
Except for last season
And he's not even 30 yet (I think), and last season his injury troubles were well chronicled - so I DO EXPECT him to have that number by the end of the season - we shall see...
the scouting report is out on Chavez
he just cant catch up with fastballs over the middle of the plate.

by Vegas A's Fan on May 21, 2007 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions
No, not really...
A couple years ago I though an MVP season was in him. But I've modified my expectations, and I truly marvel at his defensive genius.
I feel that if the A's lost him in the next 3-4 years they would really regret it on the defensively, because that's how good he is there.
I just wish that they had the opportunity to bat him lower in the lineup for less pressure, like when he was coming up - I just think he presses with the pressure of being the man on offense.
I agree with you
the guy has won many games with his glove and I wish we had the luxury of batting him 6th or 7th but we don't.
by Vegas A's Fan on May 21, 2007 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions
he has never

For what it's worth
On Kendall's line out to third base, you can see the left fielder in the picture.
No joke.
Blanton scouting report
Getting a lot of movement on all his pitches, lots of late swings on his fastball generating foul offs.
Both breaking balls, the slider and the curve, are breaking very sharply. So much break that he wasn't able to get them over for strikes when he walked a couple guys there in the bottom of the 2nd. Finally was able to control the curve enough to bait the hitter into swinging on the two strikeouts.
Overall, an example of a pitcher having too much movement/break on his pitches. Resulting loss of command hurting him a bit, let's see what happens for the rest of the game.
That's ok...This is the inning we ...

I hate to come on here for the first time in a long time and bitch, but geez, does Chavez need to see a psychologist or something? It's like he's completely forgotten that he's a talented baseball player. His ABs aren't just uninspiring, they're listless.
not a psychologist
his arms are seriously messed up. He does significant treatment all year long just to keep them working at all, but they'll never be 100%. He doesn't have forearms strength he used to, and that's why his hitting is so much worse now.
Unfortunately it takes somebody getting hurt for
Scutaro to get enough ABs to feel comfortable at the plate .. so I'd rather have Crosby and Ellis healthy, and Scut just take his weak hacks right now ..

You could say that.
He needs to kill his Wii.
if they can get Cust into the cage
and have the pitching machine fire nothing but breaking balls and sliders at his ass, we may have something special here.
We already do
the league will adjust
and he will drop off precipitously as the # of fastballs he gets drops, especially with Eric the Invisible hitting 5th. If he can learn to recognize the offspeed stuff and the split out of the pitcher's hand, then he can get to the next level and stick in the majors after all these years. If not, it's just a temporary stardom for him.
He needs to do what Tejada did at the end of his MVP year and get in the cage with the machine and look at sliders and such until he knows what they look like.
by emperor nobody on May 21, 2007 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions
The 1-1 pitch to Cust
Probably saw it was a splitter
and that's not his "one good pitch to hit".
He has to change his thinking. AAA-guys, they will eventually get to a fastball.
Major League pitchers... they'd throw you 15 sliders, or 15 splitters in a row, if that will get you out.

No arguments if the players know it's fair, and the umps have no control over the location.
Just a "buzzer" in the ump's pocket. If it buzzes, it's a strike. No buzz, it depends if the batter swung.

What's It All About....
...Cupcakes?
Is it just for the inning we're in?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Cupcakes?
Are we meant to score more than we give
or are we meant to be behind?

Crappy fundamentals
This is not a very good ballclub right now

Sadly I think we will have to conclude ..
.. jay marshall isn't that good - although to be fair, Erstad had a great AB there - just flicked his bat out to make contact .. but then that's the point, Erstad is an MLB hitter not a single-A or AA hitter ..

Wow, Kendall!
That's as hard a ball as I've seen him hit in a while. I wonder why the Sox weren't playing him in as much as other teams have lateley.
