Snelling to DL, Bocachica called up
Yet another player to the DL...
OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A’s today placed outfielder Chris Snelling on the 15-day Disabled List retroactive to May 11 with a left knee contusion. To take his spot on the roster, the A’s have selected outfielder Hiram Bocachica from Triple-A Sacramento.
Snelling was acquired by the A’s from Washington on May 2 and hit .350 with no RBI in six games with Oakland after batting .204 with a home run and seven RBI in 24 games with the Nationals. He injured his knee in the second inning last Thursday at Kansas City and has not played since then. This is Snelling’s eighth career stint on the Disabled List and he has had two stints on the DL in each of the previous two seasons.
Bocachica was batting .313 with nine home runs and 32 RBI in 35 games with Sacramento. He is tied for the Pacific Coast League lead in extra base hits (21), ranks fourth in on-base percentage (.444), tied for fourth in home runs and fifth in RBI and slugging percentage (.618). Bocachica was on the A’s 40-man roster prior to spring training but was designated for assignment on February 14 when the A’s claimed Lenny DiNardo off waivers. He was released on February 22 but signed a minor league deal with the A’s on February 28 and hit .111 with one RBI in 20 spring training games.
The A’s have now used the Disabled List 10 times this year after using it just 15 times all last year. Snelling is one of eight players currently on the DL along with Chris Denorfia, Rich Harden, Bobby Kielty, Mark Kotsay, Esteban Loaiza, Mike Piazza and Huston Street. This marks the first time the A’s have had at least eight players on the DL since August 27-29, 1997 when they had 11 players on the DL.

I'm completely unsurprised
Snelling has had 7 operations on that knee. I can imagine that even a "minor" bruise would take some time to stop bothering that knee.

Knee Contusion
Getting a knee contusion w/o getting bumped, or falling on the ground, is a very, very bad sign that your knee is JACKED.
Did his bulky knee brace bang his knee-braced knee?

It said in the story after the game
that he got cleated.

I watched it a couple times
And I didn't see him get cleated...not even close.
by Colorado Fan on May 16, 2007 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
so...
it took him only 9 days to get on the DL. Who won the betting pool on that? I know there were alot of one week predictons. On the upside he beat them out by a whooping 3 days.

just curious
is there a limit to how many players a team can put on the DL in a season (I sure hope not).

40 on the 15-day DL
since that's all the players that could be on your 40-man roster.
If we expand to 60-day DL, probably not.

might be a more practical limit below 40
but it doesn't seem like something the league would need to set unless there was a really old rule from the 1880's about not hoarding players on the DL.

15.
25 active + 15 DL (short term list) = 40.
by MobiusKlein on May 16, 2007 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
do you have to have 25 active?

do we EVER have 25 active?

Players union might say something
That's a paying slot unfilled!!!!!!!
(and the other owners might be mad that a team is trying to pay less too.)
but Active != 'Active'

15 day DL only 6 at a time.
Hi
My understanding is that a team may have only 6 players on the 15 day DL at any one time and any other hurt players must go to the 60 day. That is why teams move players from the 15 day to the 60 day. Today the Senitors moved Nick Johnson from the 15 to the 60 to make room for some pitcher that just got hurt. The had 6 and need to make room for the 7th hurt guy, thus Johnson who has been almost gone for 60 anyway is any easy move for them.
I hope this helps.

Boca's AAA numbers this yr sound good ...

40-Man Roster (currenlty @ 41)
I have a feeling that this one is going to be interesting...
My guess: Huston Street goes on the 60-Day DL
What's your guess?

Bocachica just added to 40-man roster
but, subtracting the three players on the 60-day DL, there are now 41 players listed on the 40 man roster...

This is just unreal
I have really never seen anythign liek the injury list the A's are putting together. You combine that with the fact that Bradley and Buck probably will not be 100% all season and Duke who is playing on a bad hip. It's AMAZING that this team is where it is right now.
by Vegas A's Fan on May 16, 2007 2:32 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Well it's better to do it early than late ..
.. just look at the collapse of the RedSox last year for a perfect example of that .. if you have to have injuries, have them early in the season when you have time to recover ..
by Randy Bell on May 16, 2007 3:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
RE: Bradley and Buck
Why wouldn't they be 100% all season? Kotsay is coming back in a couple of weeks so that will allow one of them to go on the DL if need be. Plus, Buck has said that his wrist feels fine now, but his elbow is sore. With rest he should be 100% soon.

Won't be a pitcher off the 40-man roster for Boca
In Will Carroll's article this morning he said that it's very rare for a pitcher to come back from Street's injury in less than two months. He may go straight to the 60-day.
Or, they may transfer Piazza to the 60-day, or Kielty...keep in mind those guys would still be allowed 20 days worth of minor league rehab after their injury to keep themselves in game shape if the 60-day DL ends up being excessive/too long.
It's not like either one of them was lighting it up when healthy - we don't need to rush them back.
If anyone goes off the 40-man roster, it's Jeremy Brown. Sentimentality aside, he's the only guy on the 40-man who
a.) Is not currently a major league "contributor" - (I'm using that word loosely)
b.) Has zero major league upside.
You can't DFA any of our pitchers. All of them either contribute or have eventual upside. Pitchers = gold. The health of even a crappy/replacement level pitcher has some value. That isn't true of a catcher.
by notsellingjeans on May 16, 2007 3:24 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
In fact
Closser was probably acquired in part so that Beane could DFA Brown if the injuries got even worse and he needed to. That way, if Melhuse or Kendall get hurt, he can bring up Closser without having to bring up Suzuki and burn his service time or add him to 40-man roster prematurely, like he's had to with Putnam/Braden/Buck.
Brown was also banged up recently.
Several signs point to him being DFA'd. At this point, his value may be low enough that no one picks him up and we end up getting to keep him at AAA, like we did with Antonio Perez.
But again, you'd rather just transfer another guy to the 60-day DL. It's unfortunate that we have so many injuries, but the 60-day DL is somewhat of an undervalued commodity (hence the Denorfia acquisition):
The A's are the only team that will have 44 guys on its 40-man roster. That in itself has value.

Kielty transferred to 60 Day DL
Answers your 40 man roster questions
by Hawk on May 16, 2007 7:39 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
he was originally put on the 15 day DL
retroactive to April 29. So I guess that means the earliest he could return to the A's 25-man roster (assuming he ever does) is June 28....a long, long time.

think it's really a calf strain?
seems like a long time.
by rebus on May 17, 2007 8:20 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
it's the same lef
where he had the knee surgery in March.
I'm betting he rushed back to make sure he got on the 25-man roster and not sent to Sacramento.
by OaklandSi on May 17, 2007 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You mean on a rehab assignment?
Kielty can't get sent down anymore without the team getting his written consent; he passed five years of service time last year, and guys with five years of service time can refuse to be sent down - the team has to grant them their outright release.
That's why Melhuse was sent down earlier this year - he just narrowly misses the cutoff, a few weeks/months shy of having 5 years of service time. He'll eclipse five years later this season.
Yet another reason to stock your roster with young guys - not only are they cheap, but you have the ability to send them down when they slump horribly.
