Rivercats 3, Ports 4 !!!
Yes you read that right, our AAA affiliate lost to our High A outfit. It was actually a really good game between the two teams although it was a little confusing with Sac having 2 DH's at the same time (Suzuki and Barton)
The game started off lightning fast with Vince Mazzaro pitching for the Ports having a little control problem. He walked Mellilo and then a passed ball had mellilo at second. A single to center followed but no run as Mellio was nailed at the plate by a great throw for Herrera.. That guy has a cannon of an arm!!! However Barton made up for it with a 2 run shot to left field in the top of the first. The Ports replied in the bottom of the first with Lloyd Turner hit a towering solo shot to center field out over the 389 mark and then Herrera followed up a couple of batters later with a RBI single to tie the game.
The game settled down with some good pitching on both sides, with Mellilo's solo HR to left field in the 3rd the only scoring for a while.
The Ports finally got more runs with a 2 run HR in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Unfortunately i do not have his name only his number #31, as he was a pinch hitter and the PA system is not the greatest. It did give the lead back to the ports at 4-3 and that was the final score at the end of the game. Brad Davis came in and pitched the last 2 innings for the save. (wow a two inning save, wouldnt that be nice?)
The only other notable higlight came from Jason Perry in the 8th inning. With 2 on and 2 out, Tommy Everidge hit a slicing shot deep down the right field line with Perry chasing after it running sideways and backwards. He caught the ball and promptly slammed straight into the wall. He kind of bounced off and collapsed to the ground... incredibly he hung on to the ball to end the inning. He was seriously shaken up so i was happy that he was able to get back up and half walk, half jog back to the dugout...
It was an excellent game, a lot of fun and the biggest disappointment to me was the fact that the stadium was nearly empty. i doubt if there were a 1000 people in attendace which was really sad. Banner Island has a great atmosphere when its full and its in a really pleasant setting right on the water. I am still waiting to hear about the first splash hit, it would have to be a monster to get it though...
Barton looked good, especially on his home run to opposite field, Suzuki had a good game with a couple of good at bats, worked an 0-2 count for a walk and laced a double late in the game.
Something else i noted was about the much vaunted and crticised SS Cliff Pennington... it appears he has been moved to 2nd base although i am not sure yet if this is permanent. Still waiting for more info.
On a personal note i was pretty darn happy to meet Jared Lansford, real nice kid. I got his autograph along with Mellilo and Suzuki all on the same ball, so one day when they are all in the HoF i should be rich...(Hey I can Dream... of the HoF not the money!!!)
So if you like this i will do some more updates from games when i do attend them. i know it was discussed in the offseason about some of us covering the minor league teams but i never did hear anything more about it.
And damn it was great to get home and find out We blanked the mariners!!! That was just a perfect end to the evening..
Have a good one all.

Good times
I'm interested in reading the box score on the game. Hopefully milb.com, one of the Bees or either of the teams' sites will have it on-line.
Do you know off hand how many of the current Rivercats once called Stockton home? I know Barton and Suzuki did, of course (got to see 'em play the Giants out here a few times, thankfully).
And is the 'cats-Ports game an annual tradition?

#31
should be Anthony Recker, a catcher who emerged last year as a legit prospect. He hit .287/.358/.464 last year in Kane County.
Thanks for the update on the game, I wanted to go, but one 2 1/2 hour drive to Stockton this week is enough for me (I have a tournament there on Saturday).
I can't wait to see Herrera next weekend, along with the rest of the Ports and Visalia's new shiny toy, Justin Upton.
I haven't heard anything about a position switch for Pennington, but with Sellers also on the roster, I'd bet they'd want both of them to get playing time every day and at all the infield positions. Last year they had Petit play a lot of games at 2B, though he has plenty of glove and arm to stick at short.

Whoops! The other Upton
(I guess my other browser wasn't set to list the comment section. Again, my bad.)
Isn't Justin AAA or at least AA? I had no idea he was playing for Modesto!

Upton is playing for Visalia Oaks
Oaks switched from Devil Rays to Diamondbacks. I am going to see him and the Ports play at least twice next weekend in Visalia.

Oops! (Part 2)
Not sure how I mixed up the Oaks and Nuts. And I didn't realize that the Oaks had switched affiliations.
Were there any other California League transitions I missed over the off season?

Great work, MAF
Hey, would you mind if I cross-posted this at Notes From The Nat?
Alternately, if you set up an account, I'll give you posting rights over there and you can post any game reports you like as the season progresses.
Plenty of ex-Vancouver players in the Ports squad, and plenty of folks up north like to keep up with their progress.
