Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

MARCO!

Wow. Talk about bittersweet. In the 7th inning, it was “season over” as Rich Harden left hurt. In the 9th inning, it was “game over” as arguably the best closer in major league history faced Scutaro with the count 0-2, two out, and the A’s trailing 4-2. Boom. “Fair or foul? FAIR!”

The parallels to last year’s AN Day are uncanny, right down to Jason Kendall’s relentless (“Kotsayesque”) at bat to keep the A’s alive and bring the winning run to the plate.

I’m writing this for baseballgirl because she’s on her way to the airport. She asked me to put this wrap-up together and requested just one bit of content to be added on her behalf: “Bobby Crosby is a terrible baseball player.” Did you feel the footsteps as they trotted around the bases, Croz?

MARCO!

I don't agree that he is a "terrible baseball player", but he is playing with zero confidence right now.  Kinda like this old computer I'm using which needs to be re-booted once in a while for a clean start...send him to Sacramento for six weeks, let him get his confidence back, see ya about June 1.

agreed, he needs some sort of 'reboot'

.. it he can get himself jumpstarted here at the MLB level is the question .. Frank Thomas took two months to get going {offensively} last year .. remember that Scutaro has made some less than stellar defensive plays at SS also, - the whole team has looked a little rusty and sophomoric on defense at times - maybe it's just too early, I hope so .. and they will get it together in the next month or so ..

Interesting idea

I remember last year, Mark Mulder tweaked his back and the schedule was set-up so the Cards could have let him miss a start, keep everyone else on turn, and give Mark about a week and a half of down time.

They chose to pitch him instead.

The back problem caused him to adjust his mechanics and he ended up blowing out his shoulder a month or so later.

Haren keeps telling the world he's fine

First thing to do is take him in a back alley and smack him around some until he tells the truth. If he's hurt and not telling anyone than the fuck-up's on him. Young can watch tape on his mechanics and see if he can spot any changes in Haren's motion but let's not foget he's got 11 other guys to look after as well.

as the game went on and put together a decent

BUT STILL HUGE PROBLEMS
I dont know why he kept trying to pull Pettite --

And when is he going to make an adjustment on that
outside strike? His fielding continues to be
erratic with a potential DP not turned midway

But he missed most of Spring Trainining ...

... so give him a break. Do you remember how awful Frank Thomas looked in April last year, for the same reason?  But the people who were quick to label him "The Big Out" in April soon forgot about that once he had been playing for about 6 weeks.

I think you have to allow Crosby at least a month to get acclimatized before you even think about writing him off. Or accept that other readers will in turn dismiss your own comments and expectations as unrealistic.

by cloosley on Apr 15, 2007 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't accept that, since

I keep saying that Kendall and Stewart will start hitting, and never gave up on Frank Thomas last year. But those guys have career track records of success, while Crosby has a career track record of failure--and it's getting worse, not better. He used to be a .244 hitter who made all the plays at SS. Now he's a .200 hitter who can't do hardly anything, plate or field. If he needs more time to get into "game shape," he can do it at AAA. But he didn't adjust to major league pitching prior to his back injury, so I'm not especially waiting up for him to do it now. And if he can't field either, I'm not sure why he's in there.

Not the same situation

Thomas not being ready hurt the line-up but as the DH his not being ready didn't affect the pitching and the defense.

Crosby's unreadiness hurts the A's at the plate and in the field, which in turn hurts the pitching staff. If he's not ready to hit and/or field than send him down to AAA and bring up someone who is baseball ready.

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

When Crosby is in game shape he's the superior defensive SS vs. Scutaro.

The difference

is before his injury problems Frank Thomas was a hall of fame hitter.  So, if Crosby had been a hall of fame hitter prior to missing most of spring training your argument might have more validity.  If one hall of famer can come back, then another could.  However, just because Frank Thomas turned it around doesn't mean a far below hall of famer like Crosby will.

by IndianaAsfan on Apr 15, 2007 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Your argument makes no sense

Your argement reinforces my point that you cannot judge Crosby by his play this month. If you are willing to excuse a future HOF hitter who misses spring training for not being ready in April, why criticise someone who by your own admission is not in the same class? You should be willing to cut him MORE slack, not less.

It's not Crosby's fault if the A's management decide that the best rehab is to play in Oakland. He's going to play to the maximum of his ability, wherever he is. But it's Beane's and Geren's decision where he plays this month. They are playing him on the ML club.

by cloosley on Apr 15, 2007 9:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm one of the few left who agree with you ..

.. but arguing anything in defense of Crosby right now on AN has become as politically incorrect as, well, it reminds me of the current arguments about a certain war america is involved in.  An increasing number think it's unwinnable {i.e. Crosby is hopeless} and no solution but to pull out.  And, typical of those who are negative  or "anti" - they don't seem to offer any viable solution since Crosby is the only starting SS we have right now at the MLB level.  Scutaro is only a sub, a very good one but still a sub not intended as a starter.  That said, I do understand the frustration of the anti-Crosby side {just as I understand those on the different sides of the issue of the war}, and don't really have a solution to offer myself other than "stay the course" mainly because no other alternative right now - none that I can see.  Please everyone, I'm not intending to get off-topic here or violate community guidelines, just used that as an illustration of what the Crosby vs. anti-Crosby climate here at AN reminds me of.

.. the Athletics may be small-market but they have BIG-heart! ..

by Randy Bell on Apr 15, 2007 9:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Politically correct?

You're comparing whether Crosby is good or bad to the war going on?

Here's my frustration: There is no solution. We have no one to replace Crosby with, because management has always been sold that he will come around.

Not only has his bat not come around (or he still may not be 100%--though I lay blame on the A's staff for last year's injuries), but his defense has gone to hell so far this year. I can handle Crosby as a .240 hitter with 20-25 bombs, but as someone who can't make a routine play?

Ask anyone who was AT the games this year. Crosby has been a joke in the field. No, I don't know why.

Do I have a solution? No. Marco is not a long-term solution, and barring a trade, there is no one in the system. Poor planning and too much faith in Crosby from the top.

Do I hope I'm wrong? More than you will EVER know; the future of the A's could depend on it.

But I don't consider myself on the 'anti' side because of any other reason than I don't have rose-colored glasses on. Look at Crosby's performance; really look at him, and you tell me how you can defend a player who, right now, is not playing anywhere close to the major league level.

Now we have 6 or 7 months to enjoy, to cheer, cry, and scream both in frustration and happiness. ~china bob

No, he's not comparing Crosby to the war.

That's silly.
He's saying arguing against benching Crosby on this internet forum is like arguing against quitting Iraq on some other forum. The arguments are similar, in that they run up against frenzied popular opinion that seems to disregard all options other than "bail".
Avoiding the war issue, I'm still undecided on Bobby, but I do also believe that he's still capable of better things, and that he should be given the chance to "find himself" again, though I'd prefer to see him do it at AAA for now. The out he made before Walker came to bat was at least to opposite field...

by Elvez on Apr 15, 2007 10:22 PM PDT up reply actions

the widespread dissatisfaction with Crosby

is based on his below average play, especially on defense, on a team that really needs its defense to be sharp given its offensive weakness.

There's nothing political about it, or irrational. Of course anyone who has a different opinion should feel free to express it. But it doesn't make the case for Crosby stronger to insult the fans who are displeased with his performance.

by OaklandSi on Apr 16, 2007 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions

Apology to Oak, my post wasn't intended as insult

.. only mild sarcasm, but definitely I do not want you {or anyone} to feel that way.  I was expressing how it feels from "the other side" - to say anything positive or apologetic for Croz does seem to invite ridicule here at AN, so it works both ways - that is all I meant.  I guess when differences of opinion arise about a player, there can be {perceived} intolerance from both sides.  So by the "politically incorrect" metaphor I simply meant that the "climate" here has appeared to me to become increasingly hostile to Croz and to anyone who dare to cut him some slack or offer apology for him - that's all.  Again I'm sorry if you {or anyone else} took it as personal, it certainly isn't intended to offend my fellow A's fans in that way.  And my position really isn't in defense of or apology for Croz - as I said, I don't see any positive alternative but to stick with Bobby and hope he snaps out of it.  Scutaro is a sub not intended to start {especially at SS} and we don't have anyone else who is MLB ready at that position. :)

What a load of bullshit.
There is nothing "politically incorrect" in defending Bobby Crosby. Your only problem in defending Mr. Crosby is the complete and utter lack of anything to base a defense on!

He's playing really bad!

He can't hit (and hasn't over the bulk of his big league career) and right now he's woeful on defense. Is there really any other criteria we should be judging a non-pitching baseball player on?

Maybe he's hurt.

Maybe he's not game ready.

Maybe he's a bust.

The only thing we know for certain is that day after day he does more things to hurt the A's than he does to help them. Isn't that enough for you to want him out of the line-up?

You're right, Scutaro is nothing more than a sub. He is not a long term answer for a team with play-off intentions. But right now he's a Hell of a lot better option for Oakland.

MORE slack??
No.  You cut a struggling hall of famer slack because there is ample evidence he will bounce back.  With Crosby there is NO evidence he will bounce back, and plenty of evidence this is all he'll ever be.  When has Crosby ever put up Frank Thomas numbers for a WHOLE season?  He hasn't.  I cut .250 hitters very little slack when they say things like "this approach has worked for me my whole life, so why change now?"  This frustrates me because of his acceptance of mediocrity.  Now, another poster has looked at his spray charts and they seem to indicate a willingness to go the other way more, which could indicate one reason for his poor numbers, and would also indicate Crosby is due some credit for attempting to change his approach.  However, I still see him attempting to  pull everything when he hits w/RISP.  So I happen to think he reverts to his old form when the pressure is increased.

by IndianaAsfan on Apr 16, 2007 10:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I think cloosley meant something like ..

.. his 2004 type of performance {although hopefully finishing with better batting avg} .. cloosley nor myself expect MVP or even ROY type perfomance but clearly Croz is not himself.  The guy has talent, he isn't this bad.  So {i think} cloosley is saying that Croz is still in a bit of a "rehab" or "catching up" stage, and instead of letting him try to 'reboot' down in AAA the A's brass thought it better to let him get up to speed early in the season against MLB level competition.  Remember DJ was sent down last year, {in July iirc} and tore up AAA, then returned to to the big squad - but it wasn't clear that it worked for DJ and I agree with Robert Buan who said on last nite's extra innings that he is unconvinced that sending Croz to AAA is the answer .. my exhortation to A's fans would be to try your best to be patient with Croz because we really have no good alternative right now - if we did, the A's management would have used it dontcha think?  Take Care ..

.. the Athletics may be small-market but they have BIG-heart! ..

by Randy Bell on Apr 16, 2007 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Yea probably
but correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think DJ tore up AAA last year.  Over his first week he did, but then he cooled considerably and wound up under .300 during his AAA experience.
I think my frustration w/Crosby is that overall I think he's overrated.  He tends to drop the double play turn at second in pressure situations (the first game this year isn't the first time that's happened - remember getting the stare down from Redman?), and I've never thought very highly of his hitting.  So, I'm probably guilty of dumping a few years worth of frustrations on him over his poor overall start, and under any measure it has been poor.
I just hope the optimists are correct in that it is just rust and an altered approach at the plate causing the problems.  If so, he should be rounding into shape in the next couple of weeks.

2 for 21 after that at-bat.  Small sample size, yes, not very good the other 8 innings of a game, and probably 3 out of every 4 such situations.

rivera's '42' makes for a classic image

mariano, of course, is the only player with that # due to the grandfather clause.  between the rainouts and that final image of the ball shooting over that # on mariano's back, it has been an awesome tribute even without the hollywood show starting now in chavez ravine.  did jackie want us to remember who that # belongs to when he blew that ball a little to the right?  did jackie want to remind us all of what quality baseball is by raining out his least favorite teams?

Nothing against you or baseballgirl

But do you really want to say that about Crosby after such a terrific win, and while you're celebrating a guy that was 1-20 going into the heroic at bat. I mean, it doesn't take much to not be terrible all of a sudden. If Crosby went 3-4 on Tuesday he suddenly wouldn't be terrible.

Look, I think it's likely that Crosby will be a journeyman who plays on several teams, an average or below-average player. But we don't know yet. We're hoping he's a little better than average (no more illusions about MVPs, obviously).

And just remember what was being said about Thomas all through April and May last year. And what's been said about so many others, Marco included.

Go A's, Crosby included.

I don't think the criticisms of Croz

only date back one day, one series, or one month. The guy has had one great month in 3 years. But in this case, I'm literally just honoring bbg's request when she asked me to write the recap. I'd have difficulty disagreeing with it--especially right now, when Croz not only looks like a minor league hitter, but can't really throw either.

Oh: Congratulations, Jay Marshall, on your first major league win. You beat Mariano Rivera!

It was an AMAZING at-bat

To end a, by and large, frustrating game. The fans are angry at Crosby, me included, and rightly so. His offense is terrible and he made THREE miscues in the field today, any of which could have been the difference in the game.

Is Scutaro the answer? Of course not! He's not an every-day shortstop or hitter. But Crosby has NOT been even close to good with the bat...well, ever, and now that his fielding has gone to hell, he's hurting the team EVERYWHERE.

Now we have 6 or 7 months to enjoy, to cheer, cry, and scream both in frustration and happiness. ~china bob

Thoughts...

I guess I am glad I stuck with this game until the end.

-- Harden.  Made of glass.  Shoulder tightness, in A's parlance, could mean anything from: "His next start is pushed back a few days" to "His career is over."  The reality is what we already knew: Harden can't be counted on as a critical part of the A's rotation.  If he's around for some big games, that's just gravy.

-- Crosby.  Horrible.  I have been willing to patient with him because he's in extended spring training.  But my patience is wearing thin.  It's not that he can't hit.  It's that he can't field or throw, either.  My own recommendation is that he go to Sacramento for a while.  He can have extended spring training somewhere that isn't costing the A's valuable wins.  (That is management's fault, by the way.)  Scutaro isn't hitting either, except in the ninth inning against a Hall of Fame closer to win the game.  But we know he can be a capable fill-in.

-- Overall hitting.  Dreadful.  What's our team OBP after the first inning, anyway?  I am not sure I want to know.

-- Unsung heroes.  Scutaro can and should get the cudos.  But let's not forget Walker getting on base when it didn't seem to matter or Kendall's walk that set everything up.  And while we're at it, I have to give Nick Swisher a lot of credit for catching the ball at the wall.  If he doesn't catch it, Scutaro's heroics don't matter.

-- Marshall.  Those lefty submariners are a nuisance, aren't they?  He's been doing great.  It's nice to get him a much-deserved win.

-- Where it ranks.  This is Scutaro's most amazing game-winner ever, considering the guy on the mound and the depressing preamble.  He never wanted that jog around the bases to end.

nice recap

The hitting continues to be pathetic. Kietly
isnt hitting from the right side and he's just
down right awful from the left. Why he persists
with switch hitting is a puzzle that I'm not
going to solve, but i hope he does. Stewart
is OK but JayPay had better power. Piazza is
fine but he's no Thomas. Kendall has just more
down than up and so was Walker until that 9th
inning.

We just dont have much power in this lineup (less
than last year even!) and need to put together rallies to put runs on the board and that's not happening as well.

I hope DJ comes back healthy and swinging a big
stick because we're going to need the power at
1st and Buck keeps up his hot hitting and develops
some power as well because we're going to need
all we can get.

Nice win, bitches!!!

The sun is hot, you need air to breathe, Crosby sucks. We know all these things to be fact. I love how he twice ruined some momentum that Chavez provided (triple, then a SB) instantaneously. It's no big fucking mystery why we don't put big innings together. There are some serious black holes in the lineup. After the Chavvy triple and subsequent Crosby "weak rollover I tried to pull" (TM), I thought we were going to lose. And we were leading 2-0.....Good teams seem to have a knack for piling it on (how's that for Baseball Almanac analysis?)

That being said, when I got home and was able to see the game, I was not surprised to see us down 4-2. I was surprised to see that Scooty HR. What a great moment, good for him.

(Who was it that said Scutaro had lost his spark?!)

Just got back from the game. Right up to the last strike, there were some very loud yankee fans ragging on us A's fans in Section 227...and when Marco hit that sweet shot (I never doubted it was fair) they mysteriously disappeared.

Lots of us were jumping, shouting, hugging, and High-fiving for quite a few minutes in the stands!

Harden's shoulder was already tightening up before they took him out. I think he kept insisting he was fine. I hope it's nothing serious.

Today was Bradley's birthday. You know he was dying to be out there (he usually homers on his birthday), plus he was due to wear #42 in honor of Jackie Robinson. So the fact that he wasn't playing is worrisome.

Crosby is the anti-Beane

If Beane and his team of blue light Beanites are the masters of running around in the middle of the night and finding value the MLB bargain bins, how does one explain the Crosby factor?  Better to dump a  guy a year too early than a year too late?  Sell while tangible value still exists? We aren't drafting guys to model blue jeans and underwear? Crosby has looked pathetic for nearly two years now, and many, many have called this, yet no action taken by his Supreme Geniusness.  The club obviously need to make a change, fast.  But how has the astute Beane allowed Crosby's stock to go all the way to zero before making said change?

Since 1999, the A's management has been the best in baseball and each year, it's so much fun to find what creative things they are going to do to compete and win games (you know, someone should really write a book about this).  But the Crosby factor confounds.  Across the concourse, Mully clearly knew what to do with Michelle Dunleavy, which was the same thing Billy did with Betty Grieve several years ago.  There aren't that many Sabeans still out there, but the hope is that Beane can sucker the GM community and still obtain something in return for paper Bobby.  Actually we may not need value in return- addition by subtraction is value adding enough right now.

Scoot Scoot Scutaro!

What a series, first of all! We were at all three games for all 33 innings. Not a blowout or lopsided time among them. But damn, today, with one swing, Marco turned around what would have been a melancholy "I hate the Yankees" 2-1 lost series into an "In your grill, Yankees!" 2-1 victory.

Today, I met new ANers. Today, we all agreed Crosby deserves time in Sacramento or purgatory, whichever is further away from Oakland. Today, we saw just how much better Harden is than Joe Kennedy. But, regardless, today, we won. We may not be able to score 15 runs a game, like the Mariners, but we can sure score more than the other team, when we have to.

Keep it up, A's!

It sounds like it will be miserable

The storm forced the cancellation of five major league baseball games Sunday and gave runners in Monday's Boston Marathon something to worry about besides Heartbreak Hill. The race-day forecast called for 3 to 5 inches of rain, start temperatures in the 30s and wind gusts of up to 25 mph.

"I don't like that," professional Kenyan runner Stanley Leleito said playfully, burying his head in his hands when told of the forecast. "The problem is that wind," he said. "But only rainy is OK."

Too many doctors here

I'm just thinking it's too bad some of you aren't on the payroll.  You seem to have every pitcher's ailment figured out.  Haren's hip is degenerative, and Harden's shoulder is now broken.  Could he have possibly just strained it? (Like, what he's saying??)
I realize that injuries have dampened our spirits in the past (mine, too) -- but do you actually think the training staff is that clueless?  If our organization is that inept -- meaning we have trainers and doctors who allow players to play hurt in order to further damage themselves -- then we are the worst run, most unprofessional club in the history of sports.
I find that hard to believe.

Raise your hand

...if you expected Harden to pitch a whole season without any ailments.

We all know the dude is made of glass, and his mind is not right either. When a pitcher makes a bare-hand grab of a sharply hit ball, you know trouble is coming. The hand starts swelling, he tries to compensate for the lack of grip by doing something weird, and before you know it the bastard's on the DL for six weeks.

I would have pulled him out of the game as soon as he bare-handed that grounder.

He is overrated

Young is a very nice hitter, but he doesn't walk that much and doesn't hit with all that much power.  I'm not saying Young is not good, I'm just saying he is not an elite hitter as he is thought of and is now paid to be.  Check his OPS+ and tell me if he is overrated offensively (and he has terrible range defensively).  As I said, if Jeter stumbles, he will make the perfect candidate for the retards that vote for Gold Gloves every year.

SCUTARO!

to whoever was pondering why crosby wasn't traded....

he had promise his rookie season.  He won ROY and seemed destined to be an all-star caliber shortstop, and then BAM, his second season (and forever after) he hits the DL.  nobody is going to trade for an injured player and crosby hasn't been worth a dime since that first DL stint.  Are you saying that beane should've traded him after his rookie year?

The situation with Crosby is something that could not have been averted unless Beane could see the future.  His trade value is absolutely zero right now, and the best we can hope for is for him to live up to at least some of the expectations we had of him.

in all fairness though, if he doesn't get it together by the all-star break i expect him to be sent down to the minors.

Mostly frustrating game with one REALLY big hit!

Don't get me wrong, Marco Scutaro's HR might be the biggest of his career, considering the competition and the count! What a hit! What a moment! This one will be talked about for a LONG TIME!

But aside from that, MAN, what a day.

  • First of all, it was an incredibly bad decision to let both the playoff-bound Warriors and the A's--WHO SHARE A PARKING LOT--keep their games at basically the same starting time. It was a parking nightmare the likes of which I've NEVER seen.
  • No one, NO ONE, wants to see Harden go down in a game OR catch balls with his bare hand. OR be pulled long, long after he should.
  • Our offense has been awful. Terrible to sit through TWO games where your team scores in the first, and then can't even come close to scoring for a few innings (try twelve!) afterwards. Just maddening.
  • Why does Kielty hit against anyone except lefties? I guess you have to start him sometimes, but Buck should be pinch-hitting in every other situation.
  • Bobby Crosby is a JOKE. I've accepted that he can't hit, but that was on the premise that he could at least play a passable shortstop. Three plays today he botched for Harden, none more important than blowing a routine double-play bringing A-rod to the plate unnessesarily.
  • Marshall > Kennedy. He should have replaced Harden.

But that hit just can't be replicated. Just ridiculous. Man, Marco, you deserved every bit of your glory there.

I still think Marco's double in ALDS 2007 Game 3

that put the game out of the Twins reach -- and assured that the A's would advance to the ALCS -- may be a more important hit. But believe me, this was glorius!!! (especially his well deserved home run dance around the diamond!)

Harden in Game One

was left in way too long.  How many runs were we ahead?  Don't we have some kind of bullpen?  What was the point of keeping him in past the sixth?  It wasn't August after all.

I'd like to give some credit to

Kendal's defensive play to save a run.  Retrieving that wild pitch from Harden and making a perfect throw while off balance to get Mientkweioacjozzzzz at the plate was awesome, not to mention how he just shut down the Yankee running game all series.  Plus he too had a nice AB against Rivera in the 9th to get Scoot to the plate.

just got home from the game...

what a freaking game!  my voice is nearly gone from yelling "You Gotta Be Kidding Me!!" nearly 1000 times.  Oh, i may have snuck in a few Yankees sucks along the way.  and to the wench sitting behind me, SUCK is not a bad word and i'll yell it as loud as i please.

a couple of thoughts on the game.

scutaro = this is the 3rd game winner i've seen from him in person.  2 off of rivera and one off of k-fraud.  he's simply a winner.  scutaro is not a great player, i'm not confused.  i'd rather lose with scutaro, then watch that hack crosby.  he may have been 1 for 20 coming into the game, but he's been hitting hard line drives that you knew were bound to fall in.

crosby = if he never plays for the a's again, i'll be happy.  his defense will improve but his bat won't.  the a's think he's got a high ceiling.  when has he shown skills at the major league level?  he's got a 2 cent head if he can't tolerate a stint at AAA to get it together.  on a team of gamers, crosby is a prima donna that doesn't get results.  if marco = winner, then crosby = loser.

swisher = the guy does it all.  he plays all 3 OF positions well and plays a stellar 1B.  that catch of the a-rod drive late in the game was simply amazing.  guy always has a good attitude, isn't afraid to laugh at himself and consistently puts up great at bats.

kielty = garbage.  he's supposed to kill lefties.  ummm.  how many hits this series?  right.  plus he almost killed swisher on a drive in right center when swisher clearly called him off.  luckily, swisher made the catch.

walker = defense makes me shudder.  if the ball from a fellow infielder bounces before it gets to you (probably from crosby), your job is to scoop it up.  that being said, the guy generally gives a high quality at bat.  another low pop guy, but he's servicable till DJ gets back.

kendall = playing great defense.  chasing down the harden wild pitch to get mientkiwicz at the plate was great.  kendall owns the throw to second base on steal attempts.  almost makes up for his punch and judy offense.  almost.

yankees fans = i don't care how many rings your team has.  most were won before your parents were born. the line means nothing to me.

I don't know, it's hard to be positive

with pitchers.  Escobar for LAAAAAAA missed a start because of shoulder tightness and now he's on the DL.  It's also hard to be optimistic with Harden given his injury track record.  I would guess the team finds something wrong in the MRI and he misses significant time.  It's unfortunate, but you have to be realistic and carve through the PR dance that every team does.  He'll miss one start as a precautionary measure, and pretty soon, before you know it, he'll be on the DL.  It's just the way these things go.  I would say it's less than 50% that he makes his next start without any issues.

Best of all, though, according to the board participants YES posted on their home page that the Yankees won the game 4-2 before the game was over.  Guess they thought they could take ol' Mo to the bank and post the final score in the 9th inning.  Typical Yankee arrogance and I'm glad it bit them in the ass today.

Somehow, when Marco stepped up to the plate and I started to weigh the odds of what was "possible" in this situation, I started to actually vizualize him hitting one over the left field scoreboard and the pandemonium that would ensue.

Harden pitched well for the six innings he was on the mound, but left in the top of the seventh due to tightness in his right shoulder. Harden gave up a leadoff double to Alex Rodriguez in the seventh and was then removed.

"It was more a precautionary [decision] than anything," Geren said. "When he felt the tightness, we felt it was the right move to take him out. We'll see how he feels tomorrow."

what a game

just like everyone else i was sure it was over.  i was actually going to turn off the tv in the 8th inning and take off but for some reason i kept watching.  glad i did.

and i think everyone is being way to harsh on crosby.  yeah he looks terrible right now but to constantly say he sucks and call him a joke is low class.  as bad as yankee fans. i still think he will end up being a 275 hitter with 25 hr power (he probably has the raw power to hit 35 or 40, but i don't think he has the discipline to do that).  he is also a great defender.  we know this is true, three or four bad games doesn't change anything there.  the kid has a lot of talent.  remember in his rookie year at one point he had his ba all the way up to 271 and was hitting with power and confidence.  its going to take a little time and some ugly abs but i do believe he will get back there.

Potential

Crosby (may) have the potential to hit .275 with 25 HR power and he's certainly shown that he can be an excellent defender but he's doing neither of those things at this time.

You're looking back to a stretch he had 3 years ago to defend the guy. I've got news for you, the league figured that guy out and made adjustments. The question is can Crosby make some adjustments of his own? He has struggled to do so for the bulk of the last two years.

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

Has this place been invaded by Yankee fans?

The way some folks are bashing Crosby reminds me of the treatment A-Rod gets in New York. He's probably one of the top 10 ball players of all time, but to Yankee fans he's a pretender to the throne of Jeter and not a "true Yankee."

Bobby Crosby is a better than average shortstop. They don't give ROYs to "terrible baseball players." I saw him play his rookie season and I know what he's capable of doing.

Last year, he fractured a vertebra from playing extra-hard and the A's medical staff screwed him over. They then went overboard making sure he was ready to play this year before letting him out on the field and as a result he came out of spring training less prepared than most guys. So they're letting him play his way back into shape, form, and timing, as they should.

Crosby was supposed to get the day off Sunday, but had to play because of the bruise on Mark Ellis' back. He didn't have the best day of his career, but he didn't cost the team a win either.

When he's healthy, he's a better fielder, hitter, and runner than Marco. And even when he sucks, he's better. What's Marco's BA right now?

So all this Crosby-hating is unseemly for a good A's fan. The team screwed him last year by misdiagnosing his injury, and he deserves just a little bit of slack before all the hating is justified.

Don't act like a bunch of white-trash Yankee fans, people, please. Half of baseball is mental and it wouldn't surprise me if a some of the players read this crap from time to time.

Hate on Jeter and Ed Rapuano instead.

"Patience" is usually not a popular thing to advocate to fans, I know I'm the same way sometimes and want instant results {e.g. our sucky offense right now} ..

.. the Athletics may be small-market but they have BIG-heart! ..

Quit lying to yourself

Bobby Crosby IS NOT a better than average shortstop. Not right now.

You ask for slack? Crosby hasn't done much over that last two seasons, he's got all the slack he's going to get.

By the way, calling people white trash because they have an opinion that you don't agree with is rather insulting. Do it again and I'm afraid we aren't going to get along very well.

Yep. Warm and fuzzy... that's me.

Point taken

That might have been a bit harsh. And it's also true that whatever Crosby's native talent level may be, he hasn't played well for a while now. Maybe he's still injured.

...so I figured, you know, why not test him.

Hmmmm....
They don't give ROYs to "terrible baseball players."

I would ask the boys over at Royals Review if they agree with that statement.  I guess the Royals gave up to soon on superstar (and former ROY) Angel Berroa?

Crosby

Keep in mind that I do not believe in sending Crosby to the minors, but if he does not turn things around.........

What about moving Ellis to SS and bringing up Mellilo to play 2B?  Ellis was originally a SS and I'm sure would still be able to play there (maybe not as well as at 2B, butcertainly better defensively than either SS we saw yesterday).  Mellilo is "on the verge" of being ready for the show.  It could be the answer.

by jpl on Apr 16, 2007 7:47 AM PDT reply actions

not sure but i've heard ellis can't play SS

because since his surgury,he doesn't have the armstrengh to play SS

donnie murphy looked good this spring and so far in AAA,Bob Schaefer who saw him in KC said he was a completely new player this season;he's still young,if crosby continues to struggle why not give him a shot?

Injury.

No surgery.

What was said last year (by Macha and/or Washington, at least) was that Ellis is still strong enough to fill in sometimes at SS, but increases his re-injury risk by playing there too much.  Unfortunately, though, I've never seen anyone quantify the "sometimes" and "too much."

I heard the same thing, but......

I just seems to make sense that the longer the time since the injury, the stronger the shoulder would be.

Maybe they should ask someone who doesn't wear tie-die all of the time about the status of Ellis's shoulder.  It couldn't hurt to get the medical opinion of someone who doesn't live their life in a haze.

by jpl on Apr 16, 2007 8:41 AM PDT up reply actions

besides the arm issue

Ellis is the captain of the infield, and is well entrenched at 2B. I don't think moving him over to SS would help, and it might hurt.

The game and then Jackie
  1. When Chavez made the 1st out in the bottom of the 9th I decided to get a head start on the exodus to BART. As I made my way to the gate D exit I stopped to watch and was lucky enough to be standing behind the section adjacent o the LF foul pole when the Scutaro's homer ended the game. Oh how I wish I hadn't wimped out and had stayed in my seat near a group of Yankee fans. There was a kid seating near me with a nice "Thank You Jackie" poster which was tainted by the addition of "Go Yankees."
  1. Jackie hated the Yankees, perhaps more than he hated the Giants. The Yankees dragged their feet and did not add their first African-American player, Elston Howard, until 1955. (The A's weren't much better adding Vic Power, who was acquired from the Yankees, in 1954.) I agree with earlier comments about Rachel Robinson's appearance on Sunday night baseball. Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson and Don Newcombe were great too. I hope these outstanding people can revive interest in baseball in the African-American community. The game on the field would benefit from drawing on this talent pool. The late Ralph Wiley, originator of the term "Billyball," wrote:

"Whenever a choice of actions, reactions, or just a fork
in the road confront today's black athletes, they
should all pause, then ask themselves one question:
   "What would Jackie Robinson do?"

Sports has been referred to as the toy department of the news. I make 2 exceptions -- Muhammed Ali and Jackie Robinson.

Marco

I've seen Crosby play a few times so far this year and he just looks stiff.  Maybe there's lingering effects of the injuries or something, but maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea for Scutaro to get more AB's until he gets it straight- if he can.

by rooker72 on Apr 16, 2007 11:25 AM PDT reply actions

That was the plan

Crosby was supposed to sit Sunday, but had to play because Mark Ellis needed another day off after the beaning.

...so I figured, you know, why not test him.

ScutarOMG
I was there, drumming my brains away in the RF bleachers just to the left side of the "AL West Champs" banner, which early in the game was blown off one of its securing strings by the high winds... in a quick moment of Coliseum repair, I managed to fix it.  There's not much to say, you saw what happened.   I almost still don't believe it.

As for the hitting (or the grotesque flailing and somnolent pitch-taking that passes for it), it isn't just Crosby, although he is rapidly ascending (descending?) to "worst-position-player-in-the-major-leagues" status.  Stewart cannot be as bad as he has looked (can he?).   Kendall, magnificently gutty 9th-inning AB Sunday notwithstanding, really seems like he swings roughly once a series, and it results in a grounder to 2nd on which even I, currently shamefully out of shape and overweight, could field and retire him on.  And as I've said, Swisher swings so hard you worry about tornado watches in the Greater East Bay Area.  If only he could hit the ball half as hard as he seems to be hitting the vaporizer.

That said, this appears to be another classic Athletics team of Beaney Babies, making the experts scratch their heads when they consider how it can be possible that we win games with what we have out there.  It's also semi-encouraging that we beat the Evil Empire in 2 of 3 (classic, fabulously entertaining, good-as-baseball-gets-in-April) games without our (arguably) best player (please get well Milton!) and one of our defensive anchors (well, for 2 of those 3 anyway in the latter case).  I know MB would be out there if he could and I think MaEl is slated to return Tuesday night, so we'll see if one or both of those men can provide some sort of spark, or at least some elevation for an offense that's been so downright, uh, offensive so far.

I'll be back out there Tuesday night in the same spot in RF, come visit and say hi and bang the drums (and the awesomely-percussive Coliseum railings) with us!  We were able to silence a lot of "Let's Go Yankees" bloviating out there on Sunday with our peculiar brand of concussion... uh, I mean percussion.

LET'S go OAKland!!!!
