and now for something completely different
I've been a Kiko Calero fan for years. When healthy he was a very effective late innings reliever. Unfortunately he was not healthy in 2007, so the A's decision was not a surprise.

Money
I'm not sure it was a money thing as much as it was having too many pitchers and no where to put them.
Street, Embree, Casilla, Meyer, Braden, DiNardo, Belvins, Brown, Lugo, Mitchell, Zeigler, and Robertson are all candidates for the bullpen.
I just don't think the A's wanted to pay 1.5 million to a player who might have to be dropped from the roster 2 months into the season to make room for a young gun.

Mitchell intrigues me -
Until he got hurt, he was looking positively Street-like, i.e., the guy who had no chance of making the roster but pitched so unyieldingly well in Spring Training that you couldn't keep him off.

I agree
I seems like any prospect that gets put on the fast track to the majors meets with a season shortening injury.
Mitchell, Lansford, Italiano, Herrera, Barton, Buck, Powell, Recker, Meyer and Windsor have all lost promotions or entire seasons to injury and that's just the last couple years.

Referring to the Rotoworld thing?
I agree. With Hernandez now added to the mix, there were just way too many relievers around to justify hanging on to an injury-prone guy with debatable stuff. If they want a right-handed specialist, Ziegler should be as good.
Also, there's this Leon kid thrown in there... he got an invite to spring training, too.

So apparently
My good friend's brother in law, Ryan Wing just agreed to a minor league contract with the A's and has received an invitation to Spring Training. Yay for Ryan Wing!

Rebuild
Here's another thought, could dropping Calero, a veteran(ish) reliever (that had two really good years to his one really bad one) for an unproven young gun like Meyer or Belvins, be a sign Beane is leaning towards rebuilding?

in other A's news
here is a brief mention of the "initial report" following the A's checkup on 18 players in Phoenix the last few days:
All trade talk surrounding the two is tied closely to the health of several core players the A's have rehabbing from injuries. The initial reports received Wednesday -- when a total of 18 players gathered in Phoenix to be evaluated by the team's medical staff -- were positive, a sign that maybe the A's brass will choose to keep the team intact and try to contend in 2008.
"We got a brief chance to talk to (trainer) Steve Sayles," assistant general manager David Forst said. "He was optimistic about the general health of the team."
According to Forst, third baseman Eric Chavez is recovering well from surgery to his back and both shoulders, though it's still unknown at what point in spring training he'll be ready. Right-hander Justin Duchscherer, coming off hip surgery, feels very good but has yet to start throwing. And Mark Kotsay's troublesome lower back is doing well, and the center fielder has added some weight and muscle.

Great!
Extra weight usually the best prescription for a bad back.
Kotsay always is healthy in the offseason. It's running and playing baseball that gets him hurt.

yeah
what's Kotsay thinking?
why wouldn't he want to be rather lean (around 180)? his lack of power stems from crap contact, not a lack of mass.
i'd wager that his career is over. an OPS over .700 next season would be shocking.
