AN Visits with Susan Slusser

It's been a while since I caught up with the prolific Susan Slusser, who covers our Oakland A's for the San Francisco Chronicle.  So I figured it was about time that I got an insider's view on a few of the most prevailing topics affecting our Athletics this offseason.

Without further ado, here is my chat with Susan Slusser:

Blez:  First of all, do you think that the A's have had a good offseason?  The general consensus seems to be that the Angels are the favorites in the division right now despite the A's holding the crown.

Susan Slusser:  I see the division as much more even overall this year - Seattle is improved, Texas is better, the A's about the same or maybe a tiny bit worse, and the Angels.....well, I'm never sure what to make of them. They underperformed last year, but they still have such great pitching and Vlad. I don't understand why, with all their resources (money and great prospects), they don't do more in the offseason, and I'm not sure adding Matthews makes them the division favorite. If their defense really steps it up and the offense wakes up, they're the team to beat, but I don't think it's a given. The A's at full health are equally capable of winning the division.

Blez:  Without question people seem to believe that Rich Harden is the key to the A's fortunes this year.  Have you spoken to him and is he doing anything differently this offseason to try and avoid his injury-plagued past rearing its ugly head in 2007?

Slusser:  I haven't spoken to Rich this offseason, but knowing him, he's working like a maniac to be in the best possible condition for this year. I know his work habits have been suggested as a possible reason for his injuries in the past (i.e., too much weight training, etc.), but it's impossible to know that for sure and I think that theory is unfair to Rich, who has done everything possible to avoid injuries, including having surgery on his non-throwing shoulder.

The understanding last September was that he was totally recovered from his strained elbow ligament, so I don't think he'd be doing anything out of the ordinary this winter. No one wants to avoid injuries more than he does. Whether he's somehow predisposed to getting hurt or if he's just had a terrible run of luck......impossible to say.

Blez:  How about Bobby Crosby and his brittle bones?  Is he at least drinking more milk this offseason?

Slusser:  This is another player who wants more than anything to play a full season, and I'm pretty sure he's tired of jokes about getting more calcium or living in a bubble. Again: injury prone, or victim of bad luck? He's had some strange breaks, too:  I know he was upset about how difficult it was to properly diagnose his back injury toward the end of last season, but I've been told since then that discovering a stress fracture in the lower back can be extremely tricky. Nothing seems very clear-cut when it comes to Bobby's health. Everyone will be much happier if he can get back on the field soon and stay there.

Blez:  Do you think Joe Blanton or one of the other starters will be moved before the season starts and if they are, do you think that's waving the white flag on 2007?

Slusser:  I think someone, probably Blanton, will be moved either before the season or by mid-season, in a package to (finally) get Lastings Milledge to Oakland. I don't see Beane dealing any of the starters without getting another major-league ready starter in return, though (Heilman, Maine, you know the list). So no white flag. I'm not sure that's in the Billy Beane signal book, anyway.

Of course, I was convinced Zito was going to the Mets at this point last year (and also at this point last month), so don't put too much stock into my predictions.

Blez:  I know Billy Beane made reference to this in the Cisco Field press conference, but do you think the new ballpark will have a huge impact on the A's keeping their stars?

Slusser:  No. I think as long as Beane is affiliated with this franchise, they will keep a select player or two (ala Chavez) as long as it makes good financial sense, and let the rest go if their costs are out of line with running a club on a reasonable budget. The A's aren't ever going to break the bank, even with a new ballpark. A new stadium might translate into keeping two home-grown players rather than one - or maybe not, if salaries keep heading upward.

Blez:  Which of the following has a bigger impact on 2007 for the A's, Dan Johnson or Daric Barton?

Slusser:  Excellent question. Tough call. I believe Johnson could be a factor if he is, indeed, handed the job at first and left alone; I'm not entirely convinced that's what will happen if the A's do manage to bring in another young outfielder - something that Beane has said remains on his wish list. That would mean Swisher back at first, and .... what, exactly, for Johnson and Barton? Johnson probably gets moved, Barton comes up in September, I'd guess.

If no new outfielder arrives and if Johnson doesn't turn things around, Barton gets a shot in late May or early June and he certainly has the talent to make things interesting at that point.

I'll say Johnson, for now, but there are too many variables to assert that very strongly.

Blez:  What do you think of the decision of Bob Geren over Ron Washington?

Slusser:  Educated guesses and projections are fine, but as a beat writer, I'm supposed to be as objective as possible and not throw out a lot of personal opinion. I'd have to think this falls in that category. So all I can really say is that I'm very happy both men have jobs as major league managers and I believe they both have the qualifications necessary to succeed.

Blez: How much will Texas and Seattle be improved?

Slusser:  I touched on that a bit - I think both are better and they will make it a tighter race in the AL West. No way Seattle gets smoked by Oakland again, which turned out to be a major factor in the division last year. Texas has some new pieces, and Washington will be good for the Rangers. They're intriguing teams - definite flaws, but then, the A's and Angels have some of those, too. I don't see either team winning the West, though.

Blez:  Who is your favorite in 2007 in the AL West right now?

Slusser: The Angels, but only by a whisker and based solely on that phenomenal pitching staff. As I said above, a healthy A's team is a top contender, too. Should be an amazing race in the AL West.

Blez:  Thanks for your time and visiting with AN.

Nice interview...
Good to hear her thoughts right now.

While I fully support handing Barton the job in April and have said that many times..the fact she sees late May as a possibility fired me up.

Barton
I wouldn't get too fired up.  We know that Beane is very, very patient with his April/May/June lineups.  Too patient, IMO.  And, he'll do everything in his power to delay Barton's "Clock".

It's the main reason we get off to awful starts.  Management gives guys like Charles Thomas, Dan Johnson, Keith Ginter, etc...every chance in the world to succeed...only to see each one fail miserably.

Bobby's tired of the calcium jokes...
Look.  I know it must be really frustrating for him to not be able to contribute.  But the guy (even at his very low MLB salary) is making far more than most of us ever will, and he's in the entertainment industry (which is what pro sports are).  When you're in the entertainment industry, you are open to criticism from the fans.  That's why you get paid the big bucks.  So I don't really care if he's tired of the jokes -- I'd feel a little bad for him except that he HURT HIS BACK SWINGING TOO HARD, and then said publicly that changing his approach "probably wouldn't work."

God, I am so sick of that guy.

Hey Man,
You seem to have something to contribute to this site.  Your posts have generally been considerate and thoughtful.  People jump on players around here all the time, and then when they calm down they jump back on their bandwagon.  I can state unequivocally that there is probably no one here who does not hope and pray that Bobby has a breakout season.  Stat wise, there's not much to base that hope on, but most wear their cynicism on their fingertips when posting and hope in their heart for the best for the player and the team.

That said, the discourse around here is civil and polite for the most part.  It's one of the reasons this site is so popular.  Standards of conduct are enforced, albeit reluctantly sometimes.  The reason being is that people here want others to contribute also.  You were a little out of line, although I doubt that the person you insulted would lodge a complaint.  I thought you might want to know.

About these stress fractures...
Mulder's injury with the A's was a stress fracture--I had never heard of such an injury to a baseball player till then. Maybe I've just missed those "stress fractures" all these years of following baseball. And now Crosby---since when do you hear about a guy fracturing his back from swinging a bat hard? And how did Mulder get hurt. A bit mysterious to me.

Slusser's Comment about team payroll...
Is something that I have issues with. When the A's move to their new stadium she projects the A's not holding onto more than 2 players beyond arby years with large contracts...assuming if salaries keep heading upward.

Come on Susan, you know salaries and payrolls are going to continue to increase but typically in the press around these parts, notions of "home player discounts" and flat salary projections are misnomers at best. The Giants are to be commended (although I HATE THEM) for at least admitting that part of Zito's contract is being paid for by the MLB TV contracts etc. which ADD revenue to each team. The A's are not begging for alms, here.

Is Beane's job to maintain a healthy profit margin or save $$ which will go to the new stadium, minor league system...? We know SchottMan expected that, but is this also true for WolffGap?

Am I suggesting the A's go Peter Angelos on us and spew out ridiculous sums for players? Hardly, but with the hope of potential revenue sources coming down the road, this "little engine that could" known as our Oakland A's, just got bigger.

1 more is a lot more
if we could have kept one more around we would have been a lot better.  being able to keep giambi or tejeda or say even hudson the A's over the past few years would have most likely been substaintually better than what we saw.  You don't need to keep everyone but just being able to keep one more will make a big difference.

I completely Agree
"notsellingjeans" has a diary posted that hits upon this subject. We can assume whom Beane may target as his next franchise player(s). What strikes me is that for the sake of argument for retaining/trading a player, their salary is usually discussed on how it affects the team budget for 1 -2 years max, but by the time their contract is up, what they are paid appears quite reasonable. Whom would you have rather kept, Ted Lilly or our current FA acquisition Esteban Loaiza?

If the Giants budget is $95m for next year as reported in the Chronicle last week, why don't we hear about our A's? The answer currently is fairly simple, they don't have to b/c no one is coming down the pike for a possible contract extension, but when it does happen will Haren leave or will they retain Street, Swisher, dare I mention Crosby? Let's just hope all that has transpired over the last several months equates into retaining our home grown players.

In one sense the Yankees kept 4-5 core players. Are we wealthy enough to keep 1-2? Only Beane can answer that one.

Swisher
Swisher will get the next "Chavez Extension".  But, that won't need have to happen until 2010 (at the earliest).  I'm sure we'll see an extension for Swisher this season.  I hope in includes a team option for 2011.

I don't think Billy Beane will ever offer crazy money to any of our pitchers (Haren, Street, etc...), now or in the future.  It's way too risky.

by Colorado Fan on Jan 8, 2007 2:09 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Other benifits to a GREAT team
Gerard you will see the answer once you look at the big picture.  The ownership group will be investing heavily in the ballpark area.  It is another source of potential revenue for the owners.  And it revenue they do not have to share with all the other teams.  What better way to guarantee that all the condos are sold and all the stores are leased for ten years than to have a "big star" team.

You cannot guarantee success.  But you can pay for interest.  The Giants just did it with Zito in a year that ticket prices jumped out of sight and renewals were very slow.

Of course they will spend more, much more, if only to guarantee a huge amount of interest and excitement in the area.  Who will be buying in a neighborhood owned by a Kansas City type team.  How dreadful would that be to come home to everyday?

The spending will increase big time.  Once the development timing is more concrete it will be fascinating to see the long term plan which I suspect will be similar to the Cleveland Indians effort for their new ballpark.

It will be fun.  I hope I can afford to be a part of it.

If the model is Cleveland...
I would be ecstatic to see what the possibilities are. That would put the A's in the mid-market category of competition, I think not so much as for acquiring free agents, but perhaps using those monies for player retention.

Retention is better
Sure retention is better.  Generally it is less expensive and you are dealing withn a better known quantity.

However if there are holes to fill that cannot be done within our organization--they will be filled--probably well before the trade deadline.

They will need to build (buy) interest and it will be very very fun to watch how BB does it.

The Athletics need a TV Station
The Yankees have that phenomenal payroll that is paid for 100% out of the television profits.  Whether Yankee Stadium makes money or not is not in the equation for keeping players, and Cisco Field is not the route to a higher payroll.

If the Athletics had a cable television system for all home games, and it covered Medford Oregon to Reno to Bakersfield, and up to Monterey, they could possibly boost payroll another $30million.  But first, you need a station.

Rename Fremont to Philadelphia, and all's well.

whats desirable
about being in a position that lacks the authority that your peers have?
about being told not to sac bunt, not to steal bases?

EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Lew Wolff is scheduled to be the guest on the Ronn Owens radio show this Thursday 1/11 in the 10am hour--that's KGO AM 810 on your dial out of San Francisco. By the way, I saw Mr. and Mrs. Lew Wolff recently at Los Gatos Whole Foods--it was night-time and he was ordering  sandwiches and I happened to be right behind him. He's a pretty serious old dude giving instructions on building a sandwich and exchanging currency. That's what struck me--whether buying a sandwich or a ballpark--the old guy's dead serious when he whips out his wallet. And, I wasn't going to bother him.

sandwiches are serious business
Mayo spread in the wrong direction can seriously compromise one's enjoyment of a sandwich.

Mayo?
Foley: In every class, there's always one joker who thinks that he's smarter than me. In this class, that happens to be you. Isn't it, Mayonnaise?

Thanks Blez
And thank you Ms. Slusser.
This guy is dead! We'll list him as day-to-day for possible reincarnation.

That rumored Mets trade
is just that, a rumor.
Why would the Mets include J. Maine or Heilman in the deal with Milledge for Blanton. Doesn't make much sense.
Both Maine & Heilman have postseason experience. Blanton does not, and you could make an argument that Maine and Heilman is slightly better than Blanton.

Seattle
With all due respect to the Divine Ms. S, Seattle will be worse in 2007 than in 2006. Losing Snelling and Soriano and adding Vidro and Horriblecio Ramirez is definitely subtraction by addition, or subtraction by subtraction, or..well, just go over to USS Mariner for the grim highlights. Seattle will NOT be a factor this season.
