Over the last few years, it's been very rare for the Oakland A's to play a game that didn't have any impact on the divisonal race. Following last night's clinching of the American League West with a 12-3 bombing of the Mariners, our champagne soaked green and gold heroes are all set to send out the scrubs in what should be a fun game to watch - if nothing else, but for seeing how a left side of the infield that includes Antonio Perez and D'Ángelo Jiménez compares to Chavy and Scoot.

And contrary to some game previews, Mr. Barry Zito has no intention of starting this game. In his place, we have Jason Windsor, with a record of 0-1 and an ERA of 5.19, taking on Gil Meche, who sports an 11-8 mark and an ERA of 4.48.

Tonight, all the veterans get the day off, including Blez, Nico and BBG!

I think Adam Melhuse
is the happiest person on the team about the clinch.

Kotsay and Kendall may be stoked, but poor Melhuse needed it to play ANY baseball!

Just thinking...
Wouldn't it have made more sense to have Jeremy Brown catch Windsor given how well they know each other, or is this just a plan to get Melhuse into the catcher's gear again?

That Adam get's some time behind the plate, since it is way more likely that Adam will see an appearance in the post season.

I do find it interesting he's not DH.  But I guess Macha thinks he needs to keep him on the field to keep him out of trouble and focused.

We've all heard the stories, but now we got to see Swish in action. It's more likely that he's most accustomed to getting hammered and playing the next day than the rest of them are.

in person.  Swish is a sight to be seen (spring training).

Some notes from the lineup...
  1. Perez is batting .099. If he goes 1 for 5 or better, I assume we could finagle an average above .100 for the season.
  2. Brown and Bocachica are batting .000. Bocachica has one walk in his plate appearance, while Brown has one out. Their combined OPS at this point is .500.
  3. 3 players are batting .250 to .275, 3 are batting .200 to .250 and three are batting less than .100. Odd splits.

today it was pedro, but huddy was involved:

The New York Mets' ace was rocked again in his final start of the regular season, giving up eight hits, seven runs and two homers in 2 2-3 innings against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday night... He was yanked after giving up a run-scoring double to fellow pitcher Tim Hudson, who gave the Braves a 7-0 lead.

Martinez has a 16.97 ERA over his last four starts, giving up 22 hits and 20 earned runs in 11 2-3 innings.

Pedro looked awful.  It looks like his "fast"ball is topping out in the mid-80s, if that.  The Mets are in big trouble if the have to go with El Duque, Glavine, Trachsel, and...uhh...Brian Bannister?

I'm worried about Swisher.
Dehydration=muscle pulls.  I'd rather play Scutaro in LF, Swisher at DH, Brown at C, and Melhuse at 1B (or at least flip Swish and Melhuse).  Melhuse isn't going to learn anything new about catching just by catching a rookie for one game.

for me yet.  The Yankees/Orioles game is only in the 8th.  Gotta wait for it to end before EI switches over.  Damn Yankees!

but the A's game is on the same channel as the Yankees game which was supposed to end at 10:00. EI doesn't switch to the next game til the first one is over.  No worries, I'll just watch it on gamecast.  I just want to see how weary the boys look, (with the way everyone is describing them).

I cant find what exactly the post-season black-outs are, unless everything (EI, MLB.tv) is blacked out b/c every game is nationally televised. but then it would make no sense to even sell games on EI/MLB.tv. see my quandry??

Postseason games are all on...
...ESPN or Fox.  There are no post-season blackouts since those networks have exclusive rights.  Extra Innings doesn't exist during the postseason.  I don't know about MLB.tv...

The Phillies' bullpen
is a major problem.  I'd really like to see them make the playoffs, because I think they could really mess with the Mets -- Hamels, Myers (and incidentally, as much as people go after Loaiza he's no Brett Myers), Moyer and Wolf are much, much better than the Mets' starters, and their lineup can score tons of runs (especially since the Mets don't really know how to get Burrell out).  But the bullpen sucks.

Lost in the celebration last night was that Ichiro's consecutive game streak was broken just a few short of 400.

I thought that was sad.  In the thread someone said something about Kiko nailing Ichiro in the shoulder on Monday as a good thing, and I didn't like that sentiment at all.  It wasn't intentional, so I don't blame Kiko or anything, but I still don't think it's something to celebrate.

Ichiro is cool.  I wanted to see him make a run at Cal Ripken Jr.

So Meche goes to three balls on every single hitter in the inning, and walks the previous two guys, and Kielty gets up and swings at the first pitch. I have no idea what goes through this guy's head when he's batting from the left side. And why is Macha hitting him third? He should be hitting tenth, even in this lineup.

How much champagne, beer and other alcohol was sprayed in the raucous celebration? Safeco Field visiting clubhouse manager Henry Genzale had an extractor brought in to suck up all the liquid on the A's clubhouse floor, before summoning the carpet cleaners.

"This was nuts. It might be the wildest celebration I've ever seen," a tired Thomas said. "I've never seen a clubhouse flooded like this."

I don't think this is wildly out of character for Windsor.  I haven't seen him throw a pitch that really give major-league hitters trouble.  He pitches a lot like Joe Slusarski, or Blanton on a bad day.

I just continue to be baffled
as to how Windsor could go 17-2 in AA/AAA. Every time I see him, I see a mediocre, straight fastball, virtually no breaking pitch, and a decent changeup. Wherever the talent is, I'm just not seeing it.

More on Windsor
I was in the second row behind the plate for his second start against Boston. I saw his first vs. the O's on TV. I'm sure many of you saw both, too.

He doesn't make hitters swing and miss. It's as simple as that. And some make really hard contact. I've seen nothing that suggests he can pitch successfully in the majors.
