***UPDATED*** Card Stunt Party diary

[UPDATE BY POPPY, 9-21-06 @ 5:30 p.m.] I placed an order with Office Depot for 100 each of kelly green and lemon yellow posterboard sheets (those were our only green & yellow choices), which measure 22" x 28". I ordered 100 of them so we can get creative with cutting & gluing and make the cards 28" x 28" -- that's going to be the largest affordable thing we can do. There were some beautiful 32" x 40" green & yellow matboards at University Art Center for about $20 each. Yeah. 28" x 28" doubled posterboard it is, then! ;)

Anyway, the paper is going to be delivered to eamb's house tomorrow, so we're set for Saturday! Total cost for the paper, including tax, came to a shade over $170.00 ($171.83, to be precise), and I'd really appreciate any little donations anyone is willing to make. If you want to use PayPal, my account is the same as the email address that's in my AN profile: distantsun7@gmail.com. Or if you just want to hand me some spare change if you see me at eamb's or in Anaheim, that's good, too... thanks for whatever you can do to help... :)

As originally brought up by TrojaNoava in this diary (AN Invades Anaheim: Card Stunts!) and has been discussed further in this diary (AN weekend in Anaheim) by Rickeyfan, folks are organizing to pull off some AN card stunts.

If you're not sure of what card stunts are, you can read about them here or here.

BBG organized a SoCal AN Day for next Saturday's A's Vs. Halos game in Anaheim.  There will be over 70 A's fan in attendence!  As 'Noava has diagramed, we will need to produce the 70 cards that will make up the card stunts and get them to those that will be in attendance.  I've volunteered my house to get the job done this weekend, but I'll need some help from people that have the time.  Poppy has offered to bring the completed signs with her to SoCal AN Day in her shiny Accord, (provided they actually fit).  Here's what I propose...

This Saturday morning, September 23rd, we'll have a get-together at my house in Oakland.  The earliest we get started the better, so if you're planning on coming, try to get there by 10am .  We'll make the tiles, and if folks who aren't attending the game in person would like to stay over to watch on TV, that's welcomed.

Some bullet points.

  • My place is in West Oakland, directions upon confirmation.
  • We have dogs, two large german shepherd mix's and a puppy.  If you're afraid of dogs, I would recommend you skipped participating as the shepherds can be a little rambunctious.  For that reason, I'd have to strongly discourage anyone bring over small children.  But trust me, they won't hurt anyone.
  • I'll have the BBQ going for the game, so please feel free to bring over anything you'd like burned to a crisp.  Ditto for drinks, please feel free to bring whatever you like.
  • I'll need to confirm you by e-mail, so if you'd like to attend, please e-mail me:  weshouldplaymoreshows@yahoo.com
  • Check back here for updates, as there might be some financial assistance needed for supplies, I'll know more once we price out the materials.

Go A's!

And if there is anyone going back...
...to the stadium for the game, I want to see the game, so if some nice person can figure out how to get me back either via Bart or by hitch-hiking, that would be great.

Another idea...could we do this after the game, eamb? I'm just wondering if 3 hours will be enough time to get these made? Or maybe before AND after the game? I'm willing to buy pizza for dinner. :)

And last thing: If you have purchased a ticket on your own for the Saturday game in Anaheim near us, can you post in this diary so we can include you in the card stunt?

For some reason, my count is only 63 tickets for that game, but I know there were people who added on after the initial ticket-buying.

I'm still not sure if I'm going to this Sat's game
but if I am, you can certainly hitchhike a ride with me...  and if I'm not going to the game, I could at least drive you to BART.

Would you mind bringing my Anaheim tickets with you (remember how I didn't want them mailed in case we didn't clinch)?  I'm feeling bold now...  LOL

It's going to be tight
no question about it.  I'm anticpating working through the ball game myself (kenKo!), and we can play it by ear if more help is needed after the game.

We should be able to get you a ride to BART from my place, which will take you directly to the game.

Don't need foam
Here are my observations from having participating in performing card stunts at Cal football games...

The cards are pieces of card stock, around 12"x12", with each side having a different color.  Depending on what the stunts are displaying, there may be as many as 5 cards (10 colors).  Here is a picture of the cards.  Since the diagrams indicate that only green and gold are being used, only a single card/person would be needed.

Included with the cards are two sheets of paper:  One shows what the stunts are intended to depict.  The other is specific for that card's position in the stunt, as it tells that person which card to hold up when.  For example, one of these might say:

Row 4, seat 5

  1. Blue
  2. Yellow
  3. Yellow
  4. White
  5. Brown (when 'C' is called) <<--- For a motion stunt
You could probably get some help on how to do this from the UC Rally Committee, who coordinate the card stunts at Cal.

Any idea where to purchase this stuff?

by eamb on Sep 20, 2006 2:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Would it work
to just use two pieces of the posterboard that you would use to make a science fair sign?  Those are what 24 x 30?  You could staple together a yellow and a green which would make it less floppy.  People could hold them by the diagonal corners--would that make it stay stiff enough?
"Don't be an ass!" --Bill King

by batgirl on Sep 20, 2006 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

the idea
is that the cards are perfectly square.  and stapling, as opposed to painting, will look kind of...unprofessional.

not to poop on your idea, though.  it is a good one in so much that no one has suggested the science fair thingies...

oh, and yeah, you guys are going to be holding the cards with the lines parallel to your arms, ie on the sides, not on corners.

:)

by noava22 on Sep 20, 2006 5:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Ummm
I'm not sure that on TV, or from a distance, that anyone would see the staples.

Also, I was indicating holding them on the corners would make them more stable.  Not that anyone would hold them at a "diamond" angle.  Obviously they will be held parallel to the ground, one arm would be just be raised higher than the other while holding them.

I'm just trying to suggest something that would be cheap, easy, and fast.  Not much time left to do this thing.

poster board
OK, if we went with a poster board (stapled carefully) and cut to a square, some options would be:

http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=528064&No=20&Nr=200000&N=201273& An=browse

Each side would be $.89 so for each seat we would be talking $1.78 times 70 seats = $125 plus tax.  WE could blade cut them down to 22 x 22 for a square effect.  Emerald green and lemon yellow?  I think Office Depot will deliver next day. Or if it took more than 24 hours for delivery, we scrap Saturday and do maybe a construct during a Mariners/A's game next week one evening?

Staples has similar poster boards: http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?prodCatType=0&storeId=100 01&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=10507&cmArea=SEARCH

I don't know if these would be stiff enough.  But to me, blading and stapling sounds much easier than painting.

"Don't be an ass!" --Bill King

by batgirl on Sep 21, 2006 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Exactly
Stapling or we could use spray adhesive, just as easy.  Painting is not going to work IMO.

I get off work at 2:30, so I should be able to post here or call you (eamb) by 3:30.  If we're cutting things too close, there is an Office Depot near my home where I could order things, and people could PayPal me if they want to chip in.

There's also a store in San Carlos called TekAid where I've bought art supplies before, I'll see what they suggest (uh, if they're still there, that is).

Those cards look more like 18x18, and if we're putting any letters on 'em, I'd think 24x24 would be better for seeing in a stadium.

If it's like 7x10 we could form messages with just the cards in different colors.

Like, ferinstance

35 MVP !

in green bkgrd with gold lettering.

We, okay YOU, could also form an up-to-70-person chain with a message in up tp seventy characters, and then promenade with it--isn't there an aisle that goes all the way around the stadium?

All-n-all a clever and delicious way to rub their noses in it. (with proper props to the woofin' gods, etc.)

Materials update
My current (and first) idea is to buy poster board for each color and use spray adhesive to attach the two together.  Make sense?

So far I've called Pearl, Artist & Craftsment, Flax,  & Blick and none carry a true forest green poster board.  We might be in trouble...

One thought is to buy the yellow poster board, and then get the forest green in contstruction paper.  That option is less appealing as two sides of poster board would make the tiles stronger than 1 side of poster baord, 1 side of construction paper...

Thoughts, suggestions?

"so... I'll take that as 'none of your business'" ~ ArakSOT

by eamb on Sep 20, 2006 6:42 PM PDT reply actions

well
it doesn't have to be forest green, but it has to be the dark green oakland uses, ya know?  Or, I guess it doesn't have to be...

by noava22 on Sep 20, 2006 7:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe our best bet is to
just go get the best green we can...

@Pearl they run 59 cents each, size is 22" x 28".  We can cut down the long side to 22" to make a square.  Kind of small, but doable.

So that's 70 green and 70 yellow pieces x .59 = $82.60 plus tax, call it $90.  We'll need a few spray adhesive cans, call that $20.  So I need $110.

So far I have 3 confirmed and 1 tentative for Saturday...

I think a minimum of 24" is needed
I talked to a former Cal band member last night and he had a card with him that was only 13" square, but backless bleacher seating is much tighter than assigned so we'll need wider cards to cover the space.

hey poppy expect a little money from Paypal.  In return, I assume I get to have you all spell out a message of my choosing?

Got it, thanks!
And no, we're not going to spell out a message asking Naomi Watts & Ziyi Zhang to jello-wrestle...

Small donation
I sent some too. No personal message needed... just later photos of how cool this will look and how annoyed the Angels fans will be :)

Just Saturday, as far as I know -- unless someone else can take them down for Thursday.

And I sent you an email about PayPal greed...  :(

I'm still a little afraid that...
...the second you put those tickets into my hand, the A's will embark on a week-long losing streak.

While you're down in Anaheim...
If you get there with a bit of extra time, I recommend a jaunt down to 1st & Bristol in Santa Ana (less than 5 miles from Angel Stadium), where you can get some world-class tacos at the legendary Tapatia taqueria (one of the few things I miss about living in OC). That way you can skip the bland mall-style eats at the stadium.

Well, it's been a few years
But I assume nothing changes at that place. You're not going to find much in the way of good food near or in the stadium itself.

I forgot to mention in the update...
I've got a straight-edge rail (only 24 inches, but I think it'll do) and a T-thing so we can be as OCD as humanly possible with our cutting...  ;)

I'll also be picking up some cans of spray adhesive today.

I was just trying to figure out where to get one of those things...  Problem solved.

Well, the T-thing is also not 28" long...
Maybe about 20".  It's marked for mounting photographs on matboard, but it'll work fine for what we're doing.

Update
The poster board arrived at my house as of 10 minutes ago via UPS.  Well, almost.  One of the 8(!) boxes remains "in-transit", but I am promised it will arrive today as well.  So we are still set for tomorrow.

8... boxes...
yikes!

I just figured out
what happened to our one missing package.  The UPS party line is that one of the boxes got "seperated" from the others and was routed incorrectly.  They told it me it would get here on Monday.  I made a stink about it, and they are going to try to get it to the Oakland sorting station tonight -- I'll have to pick it up, but that's fine with me -- provided they do get it to the sorting station tonight.  We'll see.

How many of what color are in the box?
<math math math>

25?  I saw some 5-packs in person when I was in Office Depot yesterday, I could buy some if they don't come through (and then we can sort out the refund issue later).

"I miss taking showers with Kendall" ~ Brian Giles

by Poppy on Sep 22, 2006 6:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep
25 per box.  So as of right now, we have:

75 yellow
100 green

Which, we could get away with, if we settle for 22" x 22".  It doesn't look like UPS is going to come through before tomorrow though.  Their promises of a phone call "within an hour" are now officially unfulfilled.

NOOOOOO!!!
I'll find some yellow on my way over there... and I'll call you just to make sure you don't start without me on 22x22...  I'm obsessed with 28x28... LOL
