SoCal AN Day - Starting a New Trend!

Update [2006-8-3 16:6:52 by baseballgirl]: I just talked to Angels' ticketing and they have offered us a block somewhere in one of the '200' sections for that Thursday game if we can get 25 people. The normal group rate is $26, and we can get those for $14, plus the handling charge. Anyone want to go in on a block of tickets for Thursday, September 28th? Let me know ASAP; either post here or email me at baseballgirl1976 @ hotmail.com. If we can get 25 people to do it; I'll set up PayPal and buy the block.

Friday and Saturday are a little more difficult; but they've offered us a block up in the rafters for $7/each. If you want better seats, though, I'd suggest buying single tickets, and then we can all meet somewhere. However, these tickets are going FAST, so we need to make a decision pronto. I'm up for whatever, as long as I'm at those games. What do you all think?

Despite the game outcome, Tuesday night was one of the best nights in my baseball fan career. What a fun night! Apparently there are a lot of AN lurkers who live in the SoCal area who happened to read our meeting place post that day. I was expecting about five people to meet, where we could talk and quietly watch the game, but after A's fan after A's fan started showing up, our plans got a little big bigger.

We took the newly-formed group right down to the open space under the overhang behind the A's dugout, and started a "Let's Go Oak-land" cheer that caused hundreds and hundreds of people to turn around and look, including our players. It was awesome. I think the sheer volume of the cheer surprised even us; the overhang acted like a megaphone which took the cheer directly out onto the field.  If you listen to the radio archive of the game, in the top of the sixth inning, you can hear it clearly.

We had a closet-A's fan security guard make sure that we were allowed to stay there, and we cheered until the end of the game. I'm going to buy him an AN shirt for all his help. Calling all ambitious AN writers who were at the game; his name is Harry Eaton, and his boss deserves an email from each of us letting us know how much he was appreciated, and how he went out of his way to make sure our night at the ballpark was as good as it could be.

Somewhere around the eighth inning, a man came up to our security guard and said, in all seriousness, "You need to make them move". Harry asked why, and he responded with, "They're too loud!".

Harry said, "They're cheering for their team. And until Arte Moreno comes down here himself and tells them they need to go, they stay right here."

The man stomped off to many green and gold cheers.

In all seriousness though, most of the Angels fans were really cool that night, albeit, a bit quiet themselves.

So, Seattle, you're next! Someone post a meeting place for the games; meet in the fifth inning or so, and go give our boys a "Let's Go Oak-land" cheer! The SoCal crowd is definitely on for the September games; I'm calling Angels ticketing today to see about a block of tickets, so there will be more information forthcoming!

Here are some pictures for your enjoyment! Anyone who was there on Tuesday, we'd love to hear from you (special thanks to amymelissa615 for the pictures)!!!!

Both times i've been to Angel Stadium (once for LAA/LAD and once for WBC) all of their employees were great people.

If the division hinges on the last series
I'll drive down to Anaheim for the weekend if I can get tix.  How many tickets do you think will be available?

by Rickeyfan on Aug 3, 2006 10:50 AM PDT reply actions

Keep us posted on the attempt to secure
a block of tickets as I would love to participate. I could hear the cheering form the 3rd base plaza level no problem - but never made my way over there. It would be great to meet some of you and I look forward to cheering on the A's with a bunch of local SoCal A's fans against the team formerly known as the Anaheim Angels...

can we get tickets from you too?

Seriously.
I've honestly been a little afrain to drive down to Anaheim to see a game, but my husband really wants to.

I'd totally come down if you could get a block of tickets. Safety in numbers! Please keep us advised!

Even though the A's lost tuesday, I think I have most fun that night.  It made an very aggravating loss less painful. It was great seeing some people I've met before and a bunch of new faces. We should definetely do it again in September. Go Harry Eaton and GO A'S!

I've never been to the mid-west let alone Kansas City (pathetic, I know). So why not rally- we have 4 games to chose from!

I'll be in KC as well...
as I will be driving through on my way back to Nashville at exactly the same time as the A's are in town. I think the Saturday game is looking like the best shot for me. Anyone else?
As for the SoCal AN'ers, I couldn't be more proud. I went to college at Chapman University in Orange which is literally five minutes from Angel Stadium. My entire college career, every time we went to games, I would have given anything to have a contigent to be a part of. Props to all of you!

Well
we met in Parking Lot A about 4 hours before the game on Saturday and 2 or so hours before the game on Sunday.  Plenty of time to catch BP.  Probably something the same this time around.  I've got a new 20' flagpole, complete with A's flag that is ready to be displayed.  Here's a recap of April.  Hopefully the A's fanatics group grows.  http://www.athleticsnation.com/story/2006/5/1/232218/8339

Not really
getting tickets are usually not a big deal, but they could be for the Saturday game, as that is when they are giving away George Brett bobbleheads.  More info later.

by sprtsnwyn on Aug 3, 2006 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Those photos look like they were taken
in the very early innings of the Saturday game that was eventually rained out. It was a pretty small crowd. Saturday's game (the 19th) is George Brett Bobblehead Night, so I wouldn't count on a large group of people just being able to sit where they'd like. BTW, Friday is fireworks night.

I'm heading to Kauffman tomorrow night to see Johan Santana versus All Star Mark Redman if you want me to check on a group of tickets or something.

We should do this at Fenway.
First, we'd reserve a block of tickets.  We'll need to plan ahead for that, so let's schedule for, oh, 2009 (tentatively).  Then, we'll rob a bank so we can afford the down payment on the block.  Then, we'll kidnap a Fenway employee and "reprogram" him to allow to cheer for the A's.

It's all coming together...

I always teach the bloggers to never
use the read more or "extended copy" option because I view it like a jump in a newspaper.  I HATE jumps in newspapers, so why have them on a Web site.  Don't make me do something extra to continue reading or I might not do it.  That's just my opinion for what it's worth.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Aug 3, 2006 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions

thanks, Blez
I appreciate the feedback.

FWIW, I agree with you 100% about the newspaper jumps -- but (obviously, given my crankiness above) I disagree when it comes to the online medium. It's much easier to "jump" online, and it's becoming a more and more accepted setup.

Also, it "artificially" increases your hit count, if we want to get all Rev about it.

(And I hope you know that the comment regarding the interviews was merely to reinforce the amount of eyespace they occupy on the front page, NOT a criticism at all of their inherent length. One of my favorite aspects of your interviews, esp. w/BB, is the opportunity you and the subject take to drill down into details and explore tangents.)

by Tyler Bleszinski on Aug 3, 2006 2:04 PM PDT up reply actions

not as big a one as I
There's a housekeeping note by a blogmaster here that seems to imply that BlogAds "likes" clickthroughs. (Granted, CarpetBagger's got a slightly different system, and most AN'ers will click through to comments off of main-page diaries anyway, so it's probably moot anyway.)

I think you're absolutely right in the abstract that "Read more" is indeed "work" to a casual reader.

But I think that given the nature of your particular readership hereabouts, most folks would be willing to do the work.

And it would reduce the bandwidth eaten up by the main page (esp. w/the pics) ...

Angels and Tailgating
My friend went down to the Big A last season for the interleague Cubs series.  He had a big tailgate party planned for the Saturday game.  When he got there on Friday, he got an open container ticket in the parking lot.  I ruined his whole experience.  I know Arte lowered beer prices inside but if it is illegal to drink in the parking lot, that really sucks.  I was trying to get down there for this last series but my company travel made me go to San Diego instead.  Did you guys drink in the parking lot? Do you have to be incognito?  Oh, nice pics!  BBgirl is HOT.

in the right field bleachers on tuesday nite.  We were loud and took over the entire section.  I even forgot about the 5th inning meeting cuz I was having so much fun with my new friends.  We were bummed to not see Milton on the field.  We were going to give him the loudest cheers outside of Oakland.

Hooray!
Wish we made it down to help cheer on Tuesday. I don't think I heard anything (we were way up on the view level) but definitely noticed them turning around a lot in the dugout. I'm going to the games in September. I have no idea where I'm sitting or when I'm getting tickets, but I am going. That would be a lot of fun to get a block of seats somewhere, though. Keep us posted!

The series was a great one to go to (obviously the wins didn't hurt). I love the good natured people who work there who joke around ("Sorry, you're gonna have to turn around and park way out there" haha) or people who are Angel fans who you can throw not too harsh insults back and forth to. Oh and randomly on Tuesday it was "sit by people who went to high school with the A's day" as we had someone in front of us who went to school with Eric Chavez, and the guy next to us went to school with Bobby Crosby.

It was a good series, hope the next is even better!

I want to say Detroit
I was up there for work.  I'll be up again 8/14 & 8/15.  Definitely catch a game that Monday.

Hey, let me know if any bleacher seats become available.  I have been at the Coliseum many times but that would be quite an experience with the drummers.

Just went to all three games in Anaheim.  Game 2 was awesome with my fellow SoCal ANers.  Believe BBG when she said we were LOUD.

Yeah, I remember you all as well...
You, Saint, Duke, and SAM.
Shaved off my goatee of 5 years...surprised anyone recognized me.
Wish I could have made AN day this year (I went last) but too much lately.  Heading up to Seattle (for fun) tomorrow to see the A's.  And heading up to Oakland (for work) in a couple weeks (see above).

I'll let them know you're coming. They'll show you around and you'll kick it with some players and playas.

Thursday
Thurs. is the only day I can't go to (of COURSE I'd have a class from 7-9:45, blah) but like most people I'd be up for getting seats anywhere on the other days as long as it's in a block, or meeting up at some point if its not possible to get seats together. And thanks so much for looking into this, it should be a lot of fun!

aw how cute
we all were!

i SO enjoyed tuesday, but i had ALOT of fun wednesday as well.  i think the cheers someone mentioned MIGHT have been us.  we were getting pretty loud and into it (altho not nearly as into it as tuesday)

oh, and for anyone wondering, i did NOT get kendall to sign my ball   :(   I am the saddest person ever.  amnesiac can attest to that.  we even had our "rally caps" on in hopes i could catch kendall (hey - if the angels can rally when they're in the lead, we can rally for the team bus - can't we??)    i now have to hope for the post season to make it's way to ny (or boston on a weekend) so i can attempt to finish off my ball.

just got in from my flight back from LA, so i will post my pics a little later.

If you all come up to the Coliseum
We don't have to meet during the fifth inning, do we? Cuz that could get a little crowded. Not to mention that the stadium could start to look a little empty.

Actually, I think it's awesome. You know our stadium is going to be flooded with Angels fans hoping to see their team riot on our field as in years past. (Hold. Bitter. Tongue. Hold. Bitter. Tongue.) Since most Bay Area people are too clueless to know they should be here during that series, the more of "us" the better!!! We could all go out and party afterwards to celebrate our wins!

WHEW HEW!! thanks BBG for posting the pics!!
Let me just say that Tuesday was one of the funnest games Ive ever been to (despite the loss)! It was so great being on our rival teams home turf and makin' so much noise! Also, that top pic doesnt really do our group justice - we probably had about 25-30 A's fans gathered up there by the end of the game!

Wednesday was pretty awesome too - I dont know if it was a day game thing, or a right field thing, but the fans were actually pretty obnoxious. One especially trashy Angels fan thought ranting about how jay pay impregnated her and owes her child support was just hilarious. Equally as lame was the IDIOT who, after jay pay tried to throw a foul ball to US, caught it and threw it back on the field. Of course, after we won - being the fans that we are - me, amnesiac and misplacedoakfan smiled, shook their hands and told em we'd see em in september. ;)

all in all, this series was sooo much fun! i cant wait to see you all in september!!

that i am sooo lucky that i got to be a part of that big "impromptu" meeting in anaheim, but of course now i'm even more jealous than i ever woulda been that you guys are planning another one!

this just means that i'll have to plan an east coast operation - i usually end up doing yankees, boston, and baltimore.  i know we have at least one boston-based fan - any other east coasters out there??

if it ends up being a yanks - A's playoffs.  i'll go to any night game - or day weekend.  i'll have to look into ticket possibilities too as it gets closer.  i have a friend who worked as the security guard behind the visitor's dugout, but he left to go to college... i'll have to see if he can still get me hooked up.

i'm even gonna definitely go if it's a boston - A's playoffs if it ends up on a weekend.

we'll definitely keep in touch

I made a special sign just for us AN fans:

Tickets for 2 to series: $49.00(I know a busy season ticket holder)
Hangin out with AN(An sticker) and still #1 Oakland A's!: Priceless...

among others like a picture of homer j. simpson in a A's uniform with "HOMER" Jay Payton written on it. And my GF had a happy birthday Street sign too.(should I feel jealous?)

See you all in September-so far I just need a ticket to friday and I am back to the series.
