Stay Away from Applebee's

Cause Nick Swisher wasn't eating good in the neighborhood.  He was just on ESPNEWS and said that he got food poisoning from eating the chicken fajita burrito from Applebee's.  The ESPN interviewer's response?  "I think we just lost an advertiser."

Any way, Nick also said that he's the type of player that you love if you're his teammate and hate if you're on the opposition.  He said he loves the game and has always wanted to do it, so he thinks that's why he comes off as cocky.

And finally, the reporter asked him to recommend clubs since he's heard that Nick likes to go out quite a bit, which was obviously a reference to the Slusser article.  Nick's response?  "I'm staying low profile and under the radar now, and that's in the past."

The good news is that he still seemed to enjoy the interview and doing it, so the life hasn't been completely sucked out of him.

bad food
Hey everyone, long time reader, first time poster.  I could not have picked a better topic to make my first post.  I worked at Applebee's for a little over 3 years, thankfully not anymore.  I have seen many-o-meals micro waived.  If you ever eat there, make sure what ever you get is beef and that it is grilled.  Even if you get a chicken breast, microwave here we come.  French fries and a burger is about all the I will eat there, and for the drinks, that 7 dollars for a 1 ¼ oz poor is not worth it.  One other note about the bar, the triple sec is non alcoholic.
One last thing,
Go A's!

worst restaurant
I used to drink my meals at Applebee's but found it has repulsed me for some time now.  The service is usually questionable, the food really isn't tasty and they eliminate the few items that people actually like.  The vegetables used to be steamed and now they are cooked in oil and it's just totally disgusting.  It's hard enough to eat your veggies w/o that stuff all over them!

Swisher is going to get some more pressure from the Applebee's chain.  The kid still talks too much but I still love the guy for being himself.

My Middle daughter worked at
Fuddrucker's one summer after her JR year of college. She said they went the extra mile to keep a clean kitchen and took a lot of pride in the place. I don't like their hamburgers, though. But I do like the free peanuts.

by IM4Oakgal on Jul 7, 2006 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I worked at a Dominos for years
The hygiene was actually very good, and the people there liked pizza alot and tried to make very tasty ones. There was one caller who was always an asshole on the phone and never tipped the drivers, and they put a cockroach in his pizza one night. The worst part is that he didn't send the pizza back so obviously someone ate it.

The one thing people may not know about Dominos is that the cheese, which is real, is a very expensive item, so they try to use as much of it as possible. This means that the drop trays, which collect all the toppings that drop through the bars on the prep bench get cleaned out and picked through in order to salvage the cheese. This means picking out the tiny bits of pepperoni, raw beef, green peppers, etc., then dumping the mostly-cheese left over back into the cheese tray.

It's really kind of gross if you think about it.

I've eaten twice at the Pinole Applebee's
and got food poisoning there both times.  The first time was when they first opened, and I thought it was a fluke or something.  The second time was after me and a friend had complained and we got coupons or vouchers or something for a free meal.  It took us about two years to get back there with the vouchers (and to build up the gumption to ever try eating there again), and it happened all over again.  Ridiculous!

by IM4Oakgal on Jul 7, 2006 4:29 PM PDT reply actions

On the cheap?
In my opinion, the best thing you can do is go to a local mom and pop place, not a chain. A place where it's easy to see that they're clean (preferably even see the food being cooked) and get to know them. That's a tall order, of course.

my favorite place in the world to it
as a rule my favorite place to eat are small mom and pop or family owned taquerias in which you can see the kitchen.  I just make sure there is no lard in the beans or rice (?Hay manteco en el arroz o los frijoles?) and I order with no cheese and no sour cream (Sin crema y sin queso) and I am good to go (I am a vegan).  Seriously, that kind of place is one of the things that I miss the most about California.  They just don't exist in Southern Ontario (I imagine they are less likely to be up north).  There was one place in downtown montreal that was good though....

It may not qualify as a true Chain, but there are a bundle in San Francisco.

For going on the road, pick a place that has a mom & pop feel that has a bunch of customers.  If it's an 'ethnic' place, there should be customers of the same ethnicity who partake of it.

I don't really like chain
restaurants at all.  The most popular restaurant in Sacramento isn't Tapa the World or Centro Cocina, but Olive Garden.  Oh yeah, Olive Garden.  Try going there at like 3 in the afternoon and there's a 40 minute wait.  Problem is that we have visitors occasionally that just love Olive Garden.  If I'm going to get chain Italian, I prefer Macaroni Grill.

For the most part, we avoid the chains and I can't remember the last time I went into an Applebee's, thank goodness.  The only chain I really frequent is BJ's Chicago Pizzeria.  They have the best home brewed beer ever.  Jeremiah Red, baby, Jeremiah Red.  Tasty and potent.

Once in Vegas, 1130 at night, got food at 0100.  It was edible I guess but nothing to write home to Brussels or Paris about.

Hono twice.  Stunk bot' time.  Ice cold in joint, all locals hunkered down in parkas and mukluks.  Tourists sweating over tables in shorts and wifebeaters.  Horrible atmosphere.  Steak was hot on one side, both times, cold on the other.  Veg cold.  Stay away from Hono Outback.

Applebee's
c'mon, any restaurant that opens their doors to the heartbroken local football team after closing time, only to add insult to injury by afflicting them with food poisoning, has a place in my heart.

but in all seriousness, I think it's the best chain restaurant around.  Some of these chains that have been mentioned above appear to be only regional chains (like good old Waffle House in the South, or not-so-good-old Shoney's), so as an out-of-towner I can't weigh in on them.

googling "boycott cracker barrel"
yielded some interesting results (This was from the first result):

"In 1991, Cracker Barrel, a restaurant chain headquartered in Lebanon, Tennessee and prolific in the American South, fired eleven gay and lesbian workers for violating a new policy banning the employment of persons "whose sexual preferences fail to demonstrate normal heterosexual values which have been the foundation of families in our society." The blatant homophobia of this action, legal in the cities and states in which the employees worked, touched off a wave of national criticism and protests at Cracker Barrel restaurants throughout the country, and a boycott called by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force."

That sounds like a good reason for a perma boycott right there.

NAACP Boycotts Cracker Barrell as well
I have a friend on the national board and he's big against Cracker Barrell.  Viciously racist and anti-homosexual.  Don't go there.  Just add an extra stick of butter to your homemade Macaroni and Cheese and you'll get the same quality of food.

Then again, being a vegan, I don't think the chances were high in the first place.

Noodles, Inc.
Don't know if they have them in California, but I dig Noodles, inc.  I realize it's Very un-hip to eat at a chain, but it's good, it's quick, and it's cheap.  And you can get beer there too.
