Threat Down!!!

In homage to the Colbert Report, I figured it was time that we look at the A's biggest threats to their postseason chances right now, otherwise known as the Threat Down.

  1.  Ken Macha: I'm not a Macha hater.  I've said many times that I think managing a baseball team is the single most thankless job in all of pro sports because when the team loses, "hindsighters" can always inevitably point to something the manager did as the reason why.  When the team wins, the manager rarely gets any credit.  But Macha has stubbornly been doing things with the lineup lately that befuddle.  I'm not sure if it's some unwritten rule in the baseball handbook that you have your highest paid player in the third or four spot in the lineup, but Macha continues to put Eric Chavez there as he did so when Chavy struggled at the beginning of last season even when Eric asked publicly to be moved down in the lineup.  Sure, Chavez hit a home run yesterday, but with his myriad of injuries I think the best thing to do is to move him down to sixth or seventh and ride the Payton/Kielty gravy train while it's rolling.  You damn well know it's going to end, and probably sooner rather than later.  Macha has also successfully Ginterized Antonio Perez, which I still think was one of the biggest mistakes of the year.  Perhaps Chavez wouldn't have been hurt to the extent he is right now if Macha had used Perez more regularly and effectively.  Now the team feels like it has no adequate replacement for Chavez's glove or bat, so they're propping Number 3 up with popsicle sticks and duct tape and hoping that a strong breeze doesn't knock him down.
  2.  Milton Bradley:  I loved the deal for Milton Bradley at the time.  I mentioned that I felt Perez was a good hitter with pop for a middle infielder.  I felt Bradley was going to have a season much closer to his Indians 2003 year than any of his other ones.  Well, I was wrong on the performance front and now he is being successfully goaded by opposition crowds.  I'm not going to pretend I know what this feels like because I've never had a stadium of thousands yelling things about my family, so I don't know how I'd react.  Bradley did the right thing yesterday in bringing it to security's attention.  But it makes you wonder if he can survive all season long when the heckles inevitably escalate.  I remember sitting in the right field bleachers of an A's game (at the Coliseum) once and Sheffield was the target of a ton of insults that I couldn't believe I was hearing.  Sheffield just played on like he couldn't even hear it, and the thing is, you knew he could.  Bradley needs to wear ear plugs or something because the A's need him for this stretch drive.  He's too talented and has too much ability to make a huge impact on the AL West final standings.  That is, if he can stay healthy.  I still love the deal for Bradley (the deal was almost universally praised both here and in the mainstream media - no one thought Ethier would make this impact this fast), but it's times like these that make me wince and beg for him to just play the damn game.
  3.  Viruses and Food Poisoning:  First it was Eric Chavez in Toronto, then Nick Swisher visited an Applebee's and made the mistake of choosing the fajita burrito and then Swisher was the victim again in contracting mononucleosis.  Frank Thomas even got a spell in Boston.  The A's need to be careful what hotels they go to and what restaurants they eat in because these ailments seem to be following them around in 2006.  I swear if Mark Kotsay suddenly announces he contracted e-coli from a seven-layer cake at Claim Jumper, I'm officially going to petition Billy Beane to join the team and be the food taster on the road to make sure things are safe.
  4.  BEARS!:  No, not actual bears but more so behaving like bears at the trading deadline and going into hibernation.  The offense needs an additional stick.  That might come in the form of Dan Johnson who appears to have his confidence back.  He's played a grand total of five games for the Sacramento club and has an OPS of 1.504.  Yes, it's small sample size, but if DJ can become the Dan Johnson of last year, the A's might not need anyone.  Unfortunately for the team, the trading deadline is 11 days away and they might not be able to make that judgment in that time.  DJ could even be a part of a package to land a bat (how many of you will say it's a bad deal to move him?).  It's just too bad that we haven't seen the team healthy up until this point so we don't know if Bradley, Thomas and Chavez can be that heart of the order the A's need.  Remember, the A's pitching staff is one of the best in baseball so they just need their offense to provide minimally.  I don't believe that it's exactly good enough right now and that the A's will have to acquire some help.  The question is where and for whom?
  5.   Los Alamitos Angels of Fullerton:  The team has caught fire thanks to a resurgent pitching staff.  The Angels offense isn't that much better than the A's moribund bunch, but without Rich Harden in the rotation, the Angels rotation is simply better.  The Angels also have Vlad who is a one-man offense.  Many folks are afraid that the Angels will deal for Soriano, but I welcome that.  Soriano has a career OPS of .392 against Barry Zito and .370 against Esteban Loaiza.  He has over 30 ABs against Zito and more than 25 against Loaiza.  He has had success against Haren and Blanton, but that is only in a few ABs.  I would love it if the Angels mortgaged their future (Wood, Kendrick) to get this guy.  Regardless, because of the Angels great rotation, they are going to probably be in this until the end unless Vlad gets hurt.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is today's A's Threat Down.

I never thought I'd be rooting for Jim Bowden,
but I'd like to see him make another Reds-esque steal against Stonemen. Kendrick, Kotchman, et al for Soriano. That would make my day.

how about the fact that the A's had
Bradley start every single game at the beginning of the season until he got hurt, when he was recovering from knee surgery and couldn't put in a full spring training? Seems to me that wasn't very intelligent.

Bradley is far from the only ballplayer who has reacted strongly to verbal abuse (not to mention fans throwing things at him). I don't condone his responding directly to the fans, and think he did the right thing complaining to the authorities in Baltimore. And Sheffield indeed has responded directly to fan abuse in the past (wasn't it just last season in Boston?).

by OaklandSi on Jul 20, 2006 11:07 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Someone took a swing at Sheffield, then he
reacted. I think that's a big difference than someone saying "you suck" and then going crazy (ala Bradley).

by DeeWayne on Jul 20, 2006 11:30 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

according to both Kotsay and Bradley
the fans said considerably more than "you suck" to Bradley

by OaklandSi on Jul 20, 2006 11:32 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, I'm not a total buyer of Bradley's racist
comments claims because he's ALWAYS making them about someone or something.

And the irony is, the more he reacts, the more the fans are going to ride him until they get the desired affect (Bradley going into the stands, Bradley killing someone with a bat, Bradley beating the vendors, etc.).

As I stated before, we'd ride him unmercilessly if he were on the opposing team. He's too phucking easy.

by DeeWayne on Jul 20, 2006 11:41 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I tend to believe the comments claims
having heard them all too often against him and other players.

But he really leaves himself open to increasing abuse when he reacts so strongly.

Bradley's injury
Had nothing to do with any previous injury or alleged overuse. Last year he had surgery to his left knee. This year, he jammed his right knee diving back to first on a pickoff attempt.

the body is connected
there's such a thing as overcompensation.

I'm glad they were conservative with him during spring training, as they should have been. Most players will say they're fine because they want to play. Still, it made no sense to play him every single game -- they only position player on the team to do so -- at the start of the season.

by OaklandSi on Jul 20, 2006 6:33 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bradley said his
knee was fine.  They were being conservative in spring training, which is five weeks long.  The amount of playing time he received at the beginning of the season wasn't the reason for the amount of time he spent on the DL.

by IndianaAsfan on Jul 20, 2006 6:29 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

actually it makes sense
to give someone coming back from an injury a couple of days off here and there while they're healthy, rather than treating him as if he had played the entire season last year.

Nobody knows whether he would or wouldn't have gotten hurt this season. But you take the fact that he didn't play all last year and had surgery into account.

by OaklandSi on Jul 20, 2006 6:36 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Didn't play at all?
Recheck your stats from last year.  If he didn't play at all, how was he in right to fire the empty bottle back at the fan?  He was out a significant amount of time, but played about half the year.
And no, it doesn't make sense to sit a completely healthy player just because he's had injury problems in the past.  If he's healthy, he's paid to play, not sit on the bench.  Including spring training, he had over 7 months to get healthy, and said he was healthy.  Every time a guy gets hurt you can always make the argument he should have been sitting for one reason or another.  You're using hindsight here, and the criticism doesn't hold water, IMHO.

re: playing Bradley every day
The thing with Bradleys first injury this year was that it wasn't an injury that had been hurting him for a while (ala Chavez), but it was just something that happened and BAM! he was out. So i don't fault management for his first injury at all.

the fact that Urban ignores
that the A's played Bradely every single day at the start of the season -- the only player to do so -- until he got hurt, when he was coming off knee surgery and couldn't participate fully in spring training, plus the fact that he claimed the players wouldn't go on record about Bradley's reaction to fan abuse when Kotsay and Chavez clearly did, and Payton also did in Boston around the Swisher beaning, makes me suspect that Urban's article is shedding more heat than light on this.

My biggest complaint,
which is a subset of "#5," is the lack of "tough-love" regarding playing the game right. For example, if a manager just told Crosby, "When you start swinging from your heels, you'll sit the next game--no problem, nothing personal, just the way it is," he would have sat a game in April, maybe another, and then could have taken off and had the kind of season he should be having. Same with Dan Johnson. Same with Swisher hitting the cut-off man.

We need a team of guys who play the game right--they're talented enough, they just give away so many ABs, etc. And no one really holds them accountable.

which is weird, because ...
... hitting and baserunning (and, to a lesser degree, PFP) seem to be the only aspects where the A's don't put much emphasis on coaching and discipline (in boith senses of the word).

Whereas the A's, even post-Peterson, do apparently still closely monitor the mechanics and discipline of their pitchers -- and think so highly of defensive skills and training that they overpay for defenders and essentially prevent Wash from getting managerial gigs to keep him on the coaching staff.

About the Angels
Their resurgence is as much about schedule as staff. They've gotten hot playing several teams who have been treading water for awhile now (A's, Dodgers, Mariners) and others that just plain stink (Rays, Royals, Indians). That's something the A's have been unable to do for more than a week at a time. Unfortunately, the Angels' favorable matchups continue until they go to Boston on the 28th.

What really concerns me about the Angels is the amount of runs they've been scoring. We knew their pitching was good, but look at the amount of runs they've been scoring lately.

In some way, their offense
is why I'm less worried. IIRC, the Angels are leading the league in runs scored in July. I don't think that's going to continue.

It's remarkable how similar the 2006 Angels have been to the 2005 A's: surprisingly lousy start, got buried, made resurgence with young players and surprisingly great offense all of a sudden...Hopefully followed by a September fade!

that just before i read this i figured out what the A's record was when i attended games this year because i just came back from seeing their 5-2 away stand (i was in boston and baltimore)..

the A's are 10-6 in games i've been to this year so far.  i'll be at the angels games at the end of july-beginning of august, so let's hope they can improve that record!

Is it game over for Milton Bradley?

"It put a huge damper on a nice win for the A's, and while none of his teammates would go on the record (nor would Bradley, who didn't talk after the Boston game, either), it was clear that they are tired of Bradley's act.

They're also tired of Macha playing the role of enabler."

about Bradley
Okay - so I was at the Boston game where Bradley started yelling at the crowd.  And I was 3 rows behind the Oakland dugout and heard the whole exchange.  I won't write out the whole story unless you are interested, but the stuff I heard weren't personal insults at Bradley.  Of course I wasn't everywhere and can only account for what was said in and around my section.

I was also in Baltimore and saw Bradley once again glare at the crowd on Wednesday (again, I was 3 rows behind the Oakland dugout) but didn't really hear anything in particular.  I didn't even know anything happened at all until I read about it after the game.

It is my personal opinion that Bradley went too far in Boston by yelling back at the crowd, and even made a somewhat lewd gesture on his way back to the dugout the following inning.  I think that the fans do yell at him because they know it gets him upset - it's a neverending cycle that won't stop until something huge happens (which, obviously, I think needs to be avoided at all costs.)  I think a lot of players get goaded by fans, but fans are stupid at times, we all know that; the players are expected to be on a different level than the fans.

In a related matter, I actually had a Baltimore player say something to me when I showed up early and the Orioles pitchers were still in the field.  It was all in fun, but I was surprised he said anything to me.  I walked up to the wall and #56 turned around and said "boooo!" to me.  I said, "did you really just BOO me!?"  he said, "yeah, i did"  I said, "wow - I didn't boo you or anything, why would you boo me?" he said, "you're in MY house!"   The whole thing was kind of light-hearted, but I was still kind of surprised it happened at all.  I thought players were discouraged from initiating conversations with fans...

HUGE financial commitments to ...
... Abreu, Burrell, and Gordon, with far, far less performance return than A-Rod. HUGE downgrade at third, incommensurate with upgrade in OF. I don't see how this trade makes any sense from a Yankee perspective.

Since when has George
cared about huge financial committments???  The Yanks get a quality reliever, and an upgrade defensively at third.  Now, Abreu and Burrell will struggle in NY, in my opinion, because I don't think they'll react to the pressure very well.
Oh, one other thing, Cashman went on the radio this morning saying they were pleased with the progress Sheffield and Matsui were making.  I can't really see them making this trade - they don't need two more outfielders.

First of all, I don't believe a word of it.
But, yes, it would be a bad deal.  Alex Rodriguez's profile is unlike any other major leaguer in history.  He's as special a talent as comes around.  All the Yanks would get in return would be two overpaid, underproducing position player, one star on the downside of his career, and a solid reliever.

Good question
Using BPro's WARP1 as a quick and dirty measure of value so far this year: the players the Yankees acquired (Abreu 4.0, Burrell 3.3, Bell 1.8) have been quite a bit more valuable than the ones they're giving up (ARod 3.2, Cabrera 1.7) plus whoever else would lose playing time (Bernie 0.7, Phillips 0.2).

But that analysis is awfully shallow. ARod was the league MVP last year, and is a better bet to return to that level than Abreu, who is two years older and not as athletic. Cabrera is only 21, and could turn into a very good player if he adds some power. And the Yankees would be adding quite a bit of salary.

But if the Yankees don't care about payroll, or about the future (when they can always raise payroll again to fill whatever holes their current moves create), this could easily work out in the short term.

Of course, I don't really believe this rumor anyway, so this is all hypothetical.

What really doesn't
make sense is that, while Sheffield may never suit up for the Yanks again, Matsui was just extended.  What will the Yankees do with Matsui, Burrell, Abreu, and Damon next year?  And would they really put Bell at third?  I think not.

Unconfirmed Report: Yanks Trade A-Rod
According to ESPN XM radio, the Yankees and Phillies have just completed a monster trade, pending league approval.

Yankees get: Tom Gordon, Pat Burrell, Bobby Abreu, David Bell

Phillies get: Alex Rodriguez, Melky Cabrera, player to be named

This is unconfirmed. It is not on ESPN.com, and it's not being reported by the Associated Press.

Rodriguez is the only one with a reputation for plate discipline. Soriano and Hillenbrand are generally known as free-swingers. I'd be surprised if the A's wanted either Soriano or Hillenbrand. Zito has to go!
After frying my brain in the Walnut Creek sun, I have resumed functioning and believe that Zito has to be traded.  Why, you ask, if he has having an All-Star year and is our best starting pitcher right now? I can't see us getting anything for him if we keep him the whole season except for draft picks.  Are there any other options? I mean, he signed w/ Scott Boras, so that means that there is no way we can sign him without breaking our piggy bank (unless Wolff has a secret "Zito" stash somewhere).  Anyway, what are the options:
  1.  Trade Zito
  2.  Keep Zito until the end of the year then lose him to free agency.
  3.  Sign Zito to an extension.
That's it.  Zito's value is sky-high right now.  Trade him to a team outside the AL (I'm sorry, but the Yankees is just wrong) for proven, young, starting pitching.  None of this prospect stuff.  Remember Mario Veldez? Adam Piatt? Todd Van Poppel?

This has nothing to do with anything, but Kendall's hitting makes me sick.

Five responses...
  1. I've have a callous on the part of my brain that gets confused from a Macha-created lineup.  It's actually numb, so it doesn't bother me as much.
  2. I just hope Bradley doesn't do anything that gets him suspended or arrested, or else that passion he brings to the A's is useless.
  3. Considering this run of food issues, if you take that food tasting job, Blez, you will be dead by August 15.
  4. Can a bear hold a bat?
  5. Unfortunately, the Angels play many more teams than just the A's, and what also Soriano can do against those teams is what makes me nervous.

I am watching the game as well.  (it was actually the 1Bmen blocked on the popup - but still point well taken).

Just unbelievable how bad the defense is.  Thankfully KC has added more runs (on more Angels ineptness) cause for awhile there it looked like 8 BB's and 3 errors would only net the Royals a 1 run lead.

Wonder if LAAA can boot a few more before its all over?

have a defensive game like this behind Jared Weaver.  See if maybe the kid could get rattled with shoddy defense.

Infield RBI single for Teahen
9-4 KC.

Damn no donuts in KC
Pretty funny to hear the crowd chanting "We want donuts" -- probably the most exciting thing to happen in a game in KC in awhile.

(I think 12 hits is too much to ask from KC's offense -- maybe 8 walks?  or 5 errors?)

They were shouting that?
I got free Krispy Kremes at the K once. Thanks to Huddy. :( I'm pretty sure the 12th hit should've been an error charged to Chavy, though. The official scorer must have wanted donuts.

A FREE DOZEN! The line of kars around the Krispy Kreme was krazee. Backed up for miles... at MIDNIGHT!

Yeah, it was pretty funny
But only 11 hits -- there was smattered booing when the 3rd out in the 8th was made and the crowd realized no donuts tonight.
