There goes antoher AN fave- Kearns dealt

I can't believe this deal: The Reds gave up Kearns, Felipe Lopez and Ryan Wagner for a couple bullpen guys, Royce Clayton and some minor leaguers (one of which is Majewski- who is not good. At all.) Granted, I haven't checked out the prospects, but this esems to be a terrible deal for the Reds on the surface. ESPN.com. Don't know how to link.

A similar package from us would have been:
Calero, Loos, Scutaro, Witasick and Gaudin

sounds about right
Unless Kearns and Lopez are avian flu carriers, I don't understand this deal from the Reds' perspective at all.

I think they feel that they enough offense:
So they went with a defensive shortstop and some bullpen help in the hopes that they will make the games shorter.

The only real thing they lost here was Lopez.

Kearns was redundant and due a raise.

A very big part of this is that I believe they think that the Central is up for grabs this year.

I hear the motivation ...
... but (a) all they picked up was a bucketload of crap, (b) even the decent components of the trade won't help them a whole lot this year, (c) they've been making much more stringent trade demands for Kearns for 18 months, and (d) they pulled the trigger 2 weeks too early, before they could leverage interest in Kearns and Lopez for a better return.

I'm pretty sure the A's will be players
at the deadline.

With the crappy schedule we have comming up, we'll either survive and be much better, or be completly out of the race and thus can sell sell sell.

by Zonis on Jul 13, 2006 1:31 PM PDT reply actions

sel sell sell WHAT?
  • Zito will only be dealt if Beane gets an overwhelming offer, and his being dealt is essentially independent of the team's status
  • Payton is only about the 10th best OF available
  • Frank could possibly garner a couple of 2nd-tier prospects
  • Witasick and Kennedy are untradeable because of their injuries
  • Scutaro, Perez, and Ginter have zero intrinsic trade value
  • Kielty's worth more to us on the field than in trade
  • Kendall and Kotsay are untradeable primarily b/c of their NTCs, secondarily b/c of their salaries, tertiarily b/c of their terrible bats, and quaternarily b/c Beane wuvs 'em
  • Loaiza's contract and performance render him worthless
  • DJ's year-long slump, likewise

Yeah, you would think we wouldn't have crap
to trade. But then Jim Fing Bowden traded a pile of crap for two Solid Regulars.

Just read a little about Bray at BP
I guess he was a 1st rounder two yrs ago, one of the new crop of college closers. He could end up being the best player in the deal, long-term.

I guess the Reds feel they can plug the holes w/ a rotation of Aurilia, Freel, Royce and Philips, but it's not like they picked up an impact bulpen arm. Majewski is a Mecir type, dude. Mayeb it's just a coincidence, but every time I've happended to watch a Nats game, he blows it. He even got roped in the WBC this year.

I'll try not to swear.

Not bad at all...
Reds' weakness= pitching. They have an overflow of infielders (i.e. Castro, Aurillia, Hatte, Phillips, Encarnacion) who can provide just as well as Lopez. Lopez's defense has been awful. Also, Ryan Freel can easily go in Austin Kearn's place. I think it's a great deal.

Bottom line, you can't win without pitching. That was their main problem. Hopefully problem will be solved.

Wow, thats certainly a different way to look at.
I think it is the worst deal in baseball since the Kaz-Zamb deal.  Maybe the Reds need pitchign sure..but they could have done better with Kearns and opez than these scrubs.

Zito flying somewhat under the radar...
Watching Around the Horn - hot pitcher commodities being named are Smoltz and Dontrelle. I kept waiting for them to say Zito when they were talking about the "aging Pedro Martinez" and the Mets. Naturally, on the topic of "Team Most In Need Of Changes," they mention the Angels, not the A's. Maybe that's a good thing?

I wish it was
but I bet it has more to do with they's rather talk about a team from L.A. than the A's on ESPN any day. I think we all know that we need changes more than they do right now. They already made the important ones- phasing out some of their overrated vets and playing their young guys. What worries me is if they bring up Kendrick and actually let him play. Could be scary.

I suspect Zito isn't mentioned
because it's known that teams don't trade their ace when they're real contendors. Seems to me like it's an acknowledgement from the critics that the A's are in the race for real.

I saw the same episode
Bob Ryan made a point of belittling west coast baseball (and really the west coast in general). Only J.A. Adande, the L.A. Times guy, mentioned a team not in either of the eastern divisions (Angels). I think they just forget the A's exist a lot of the time, given their consitently exquisite display of ignorance.

I agree with others
The Nats took the Reds to the cleaners on this one.

Sure the reds need pitching but these guys arent even good.  Felipe Lopez alone is worth more than they got.

Wait it out
Granted, it may not sound like the best possible deal on the Reds' part... but look how Brandon Phillips and Bronson Arroyo have turned out. I think people jump to conclusions WAYYY too soon.

terrible
You know you're a terrible GM when Jim Bowden finds a way to fleece you in a trade.

Wow horrible deal
Why throw in Lopez?  I mean I know they did not like his defense, but seriously?  I mean if you take Lopez out of the deal, then they don't need Clayton.  They could still get the other four guys for just Kearns and Wagner (which is still a bad trade in my opinion, but at least better by keeping Lopez).

Finally, are you telling me that the DRays would not have fallen over themselves to say yes to a Lopez for Lugo trade (and Lugo is like a million times better then Clayton).  I mean if you are going to trade away the young stud hitting SS because you don't like his glove, at least get a better guy then Clayton.  Even if these players turn out okay, this is still a terrible, terrible deal as they could have gotten so much more.

(Heck the A's would have given up Calero and another reliever Flores? Casilla? for Kearns and would not have made them throw in Wagner.  Calero is better then Majewski.  Heck if they needed a steady glove we would have given them Scoot for Lopez too.  We should strike while the iron is hot and offer Witasek for Freel, cant have enough relief pitching right?  God, what a dumb trade.)

Perfect example
Look at the wrap of the Reds' game tonight. Note the 9th inning. Perfect example that a bullpen trade of some sort was completely necessary.

by Ohio4Oakland on Jul 13, 2006 7:17 PM PDT reply actions

nobody is doubting the need
for bullpen help.  They didnt get anyone great and gave up a lot for what they did get.

Everyone knows that they needed pen help
But if you give up Kearns and Lopez you better get something very very solid in return.  There just had to be better deals out there.

The White Sox have been looking for an OF an probably would have parted with McCarthy and a prospect for him.

The Yankees are down two OFers and might have parted with Farnsworth plus something for Kearns.

Hell the A's would have certainly given up say Calero and Payton for Kearns.

All of those deals improve your pen, and do not force you to give up Lopez and Wagner.

It is one thing to identify your need and another entirely to give up way too much when there just had to be better deals to be found.
