Big Frank's Hitting Analysis

Let me preface this: I am probably the biggest Thomas on this board. He was my idol growing up. Also, as evidenced by my profile I know a little bit about hitting. The point and goal of this diary is taking an analytical look at Frank's split this year and see what, if any, they reflect regarding his approach at the plate. Thanks to MLBTv I have seen everyone of his Abs, as I am sure many of you have also.

That being said:

Frank began the year 2-24, hit some balls hard, then made an adjustment opening up his stance which resulted in him hitting alot of balls hard. Now, it appears he is falling into his "crotch" again and waving at pitches along with missing pitches up in the zone. We know Frank is an intense competitor, and I think these numbers more than reflect that is pressing.

Season Total: 15-79 .190 2 2B 5 HR 11 RBI 7 BB 12 K

Taking a broad view, the lack of walks are alarming, the power numbers are not. Now on to the splits:

Home/Away: No distinct difference here, thus comfort level, or travel fatigue are obviously not issues.

AB Progression: Again no distinct difference, he's equally putrid his 1st AB to his 4+.

Lineup Spot: No difference.

Here's where it gets interesting:

Runners on: 3-32
Lead off inning: 8-22
None on/None out: 9-24 All 5 Home runs

It's quite clear he's pressing, it's quite obvious that either a) he isn't getting the same pitches to hit with runners on or b) that he is pressing. He sure takes alot of pitches with runners on, and reality is that when runners are on they will make better pitches after getting the first strikes. Frank has demonstrated a genuine inability to hit the plus pitches, be it due to pressing or mechanical issue. I think it's a little bit of both.

Frank went through a funk like this his last full season with White Sox, and they threw him at 1B to keep him from stewing and get him going. The numbers reflect a distinct and massive correlation to improved production. In April and May, Thomas DHed full time, he hit .237 .429 .487 in April and .264 .368 .495. Then they made the move to play him at 1B to get his bat going. The numbers?
92 Abs .352 .487 .725 8 HR 22 RBI 18 R

Not even close, Manuel moved Konerko back in the lineup and Thomas settled back to the DH role. As I have noted in the past, Billy Beane has remarked in Moneyball of the staggering splits and how the defensive hit at 1B is more than worth it.

At this point, with Thomas struggling, Dan Johnson who is far from a top defender, and the still dire need for another bat to complement Chavy and Swisher we trot him out and see what happens. He's not helping much right now, what will it hurt? It's only 500k.....

Analysis?
If you know Frank Thomas as well as you do, and have played at a D-I Level...please help answer some of these questions AN will have.
  • How does his swing/stance/approach look today compared to 1990 - 2003?
  • How does current bat speed look?
  • Does he always "spin out" after swinging (especially on inside/low pitches)?  Or, is he trying to get his foot/ankle out of the way in order to avoid injury from foul balls?
  • Why is he still limping around the bases?   Is this going to be a permanent thing?
thanks,

cf

Re: AN Supplemental Question
Ok let me methodically go through this:

1) Thomas' approach, swing, and stance has been constant flux since the year 2000. Alot of this has to do with his adjustment to new plate coverage. Since his injury in 2001, his strike zone is no longer than "Bonds" strike zone. Watch the game yesterday, and half the strikes he looked at would NEVER have been called. All you have to do is look at the non calls on Arod and Pujols this weekend to know what I am talking about.

Consequently, b/c his strike zone expanded the inside pitch became strikes. In response to this, Thomas went with an open stance in 2003. At that point he stopped going with pitch away, and began yanking everything. With the new Comiskey park renovations, it was able to yank alot of balls out of the park, as evidenced by his 2003 HR splits.

Frank went back to opening up his stance roughly 50 Abs ago, that's the "adjustment" he referred to in the press. Then all of sudden in the Texas series he went back to his closed stance. Worst of all, he is loading up and going into a "crotch." What appears to be happening is that his elbow is coming with him, and in turn it gives the perception that is he waving at pitches. The weak flyout to right where he one handedly stroked the ball to right was the worst swing I have ever seen him put together.

So to answer your question: (A) When Thomas is standing tall it typically keeps his elbow tucked and he can throw his hands through the zone (b) The crotch results in a hitch and the apparent waving at the ball we saw all KC series. What is distressing right now is that it appears he doesn't really have a plan at the plate, in 2003, he was trying to yank balls on the inner half and flipping balls away to center for hits. Right now, I am unclear what approach he has, 2 out of his last 5 (unofficial) plate appearances he has had check swing grounders. He's a stat junkie and it looks like he is doing too much and pressing. Hence my suggestion to throw him out to 1B or give Walt Hriniak a call.

  1. His bat speed seems fine. Right now, he was overpowered a few times due to his hitch from dropping his elbow. Great example if you have MLBtv is his 2nd AB vs Affeldt, he waves at a middle in pitch on 2-1. Very blatant hitch. Take a look. He has turned on Johnson, KRod, Farnsworth all who bring it 98+. He always has killed Colon and the like hard throwing pitchers, bat speed is not an issue right now.
  2. Thomas developed the spinout in 2003, it's how he can turn on the inside pitch. Before 2003, Frank NEVER got the pitch called and thus rarely swung at the pitch.
  3. In terms of the limping, I can't speak with any authority regarding the extent of his injury. He's limping 10 months after the break, no overly surprising.
Conclusion: Frank generally looks like garbage right now, I was encouraged with what I saw during the stretch of 25 AB to the Texas series. He was hitting the ball hard and it wasn't finding holes. That being said during that stretch he still hit something like .280 with 3 hr or so. Knowing Frank, he knows the splits I listed above and really trying to do too much. We'll see what he does tonight, I sure hope that left foot is back a little bit again. I expect him to sit tomorrow vs Lackey as he has a poor history against him. Then again with Milton out and him struggling, he may push to stay in the lineup till he gets moving.

I was surprised by the "crouch"
Haven't watched Big Frank much over the years, but I thought he had a more relaxed stance, like Manny for example.  With FT in the crouch, it looks like he should have less power & be more of a spray hitter.  However, he does have good power & seems to lift nearly every ball he contacts.  Ironic, eh?
It's a beautiful day for baseball.

It seems he will sacrifice average for power right
now, knowing he will not be able to score from anywhere except for third base on a triple, he might figure if he doesn't hit a HR, why be on base.

If you put him at 1B
he WILL be injured, probably immidietly. So no, it is not worth it.

Re: College Career
As a big Thomas fan, I used to frequent WSI (Whitesoxinteractive.com) and post similar analysis of Thomas' swing and usually Aaron Rowand too b/c he had blatant mechanical issues.

I played ball at Lafayette College, small conferance Patriot League baseball, Army, Navy, Bucknell, etc. Among the major leaguers I played against are the aforementioned Hennessey (Youngstown State) and David DeJesus (Rutgers) off the top of my head.

Addendum:
Interestingly, the crotch is gone. The stance is slightly open, and he isn't going fishing on pitches. I think he swung the bat 3 times all day yesterday. I first thought he should sit vs Lackey today but I hope Macha throws him out there, the pieces seem together for him to hit the ball hard a few times.

Frank Thomas knows how to hit, he'll come around. He had a big hit today in the 9th against the Angels. If he stays healthy, he'll be productive.
