Chad GAUDIN recalled from Sac; Kielty down

Today the A's recalled Chad Gaudin from Sacramento where he was 2-0 0.52 in 17 innings so far this year.  To make room for him on the 25 man roster, Kielty (Ronnie Mac) was sent to Sacramento for the second time this season.  I have found no link yet, but substantiated a rumor of his being recalled with changes that have been made on the minor league baseball Sacramento roster already.

The A's are once again running short on relievers and needed an extra arm for tonights game with Huston Street unavailable until Saturday night at the earliest.  Other players were equally capable of being sent down, but Kielty was the chosen one as he does have options available.

Gaudin has been awesome
at Sacto.  But he hasn't seemed to be able to carry over his success to the bigs yet.  I wonder who the team would put out there to close tonight if the need arises.  I'm guessing it has to be Kiko because Duke has got to be fatigued.  That Shelton at-bat alone might've done him in for today.

Pirates have Shelton on the brain.
Since they lost him in the rule 5 draft.

yeah,,,he always had the plus d and speed
now he has the bat back.  He really showed a lot of promise in 2004.  I think he could be on the roster next year in lieu of JayPay

3 Buck Chuck is a hack
He had a nice little run in Atlanta but he's 27 years old. At some point you just have to accept that he doesn't have what it takes.

He had a very fine offensive and defensive year
for Atlanta in 2004.  Last year was terrible.  This year he seems to be hitting well.  My point is...I don't think he is uncut for the bigs.  And if you disagree, I'd like to know why.  Booby K had a really bad year in 2004, and Kendall in 2005.  Why can't Chucky T. come back to 2004 form?

Because Chuck's 2004 was a mirage
Chuck Thomas's offensive success is centered entirely around his batting average. On the surface his 2004 numbers look fine.

.288/.368/.445 7 HR 21/45 BB/K in 236 AB.

In reality he owed much of his success to luck and his spot in the batting order. His OBP percentage was boosted by two things, 9 HBP and 9 IBB. The 9 intentional walks came because he was batting 8th in Atlanta's line-up and the pitcher was on deck.

Thomas has never hit more than 11 HR in a season. He doesn't steal bases. He wasn't much of a hitter until 2003. He got hot in the 2nd half of 2003 while in AA and he carried that over into his AAA debut in 2004. He then went on to hit .342 in his first month in the Show, followed by a .265 August and a .211 September. That is not an encouraging trend.

If you combined his 2004 numbers you'd see he posted a 28/85 BB/K rate in 451 AB. That is simply an unacceptable ratio for a hitter with little power. If he's not hitting over .300 he's a drag on the offense.

He's supposed to be a great defensive outfielder, but that doesn't mean much to me if he's not playing CF. I look for offense first from the corner OF spots and Thomas does not provide anything close to an acceptable bat for those spots. The A's have Kotsay in CF (for now) and dumping him in favor of 2 Buck would be a downgrade both on offense and defense.

But other than that I see no reason why C. Thomas couldn't help the big league club.

Yes!
I've been advocated calling up three players (one instead of Scutaro, one instead of Kielty, and the other for Halsey).  Those three were Robertson, Rheinecker, and Gaudin.  It's too bad Rhino got traded but I'm 1/3; batting .333: better than any A can say.

I think Gaudin can compete with Meyer to replace Z next year.  Hell, he can replace Loaiza this week!

Wouldn't it be so cool if...
the A's got really far ahead of the Angels in the game tomorrow and we got to watch Gaudin pitch for a few innings?

We're more likely to see him
if the Angels get far ahead ... which of course we don't want

Gaudin
I'm pretty high on this guy. I think he's gonna turn out to be a huge steal. I wish we hadn't picked up Estaban, we'd still have a first round draft pick this year, 7 million dollars to spend somewhere else, and guys like Gaudin, Saarloos and Kennedy could duke it out for the 5 spot.

Meyer could get into that battle
And so could Dominguez, Rhino before he was traded, Halsey, and even Komine.  It's great being so deep.

But there's another variable: who could we spend the 7 mil on?  Last year was a weak FA crop.  If we could save the money for offseason trades or for FAs this year, then it would be worth it (I think we should trade Loaiza this offseason and with the extra money, sign Doug Davis who is hopefully still a little under the radar because he plays for MIL; that is why I want Loaiza to do really well this year: increase his trade value.)  The fact was we couldn't do much with the money this last year unless it was money that stopped the Zito/Kendall/Abreu/Lieberthal deal from happening which I doubt.
