chANnges
This upcoming season, I've decided to add a few new elements to AN.
One will be called Monday Mornings in the Minors and it will feature Brian Durack, who wrote the outstanding A's Y'all and later AthleticsMinors.com. Brian is one of the most intelligent baseball fans I've ever talked to and he's in the process of carving a career for himself in the sport. He will be reporting on who is hot in the system and who is not. He'll be letting you know which prospects are performing and who is underperforming.
ANtics will also be a regular feature on either Sunday morning or Sunday afternoon after an early morning game. Louis Gray has been a remarkable addition to the site with his amazing ability to capture the humor in any hot topics surrounding our A's.
Another addition isn't a regular feature but a regular writer for the front page. Christy Hofmann, otherwise known as baseballgirl, has proven herself to be an astute, intelligent and remarkably gifted baseball writer. Her book report this past offseason on Eric Walker book was outstanding and blew me away. At that moment, I decided that I wanted Christy to be featured as a prominent part of this site. She will be handling the open game threads on Sundays and writing post game wraps on that day. In addition, she'll be free to write about anything else A's-related on Sundays that she sees fit.
And finally, the masterfully hilarious Nico returns to his regular post on Fridays and Saturdays. Nico gets a lot of acclaim for his sense of humor which is well-earned, but his baseball IQ is off the charts.
All-in-all, with Brian, Louis, Christy and Nico on board, I know AN is in remarkably talented hands. I want to extend a huge AN welcome to Brian and Christy, a welcome back to Louis and a thanks for your wonderful consistency to Nico.
Here's to a World Series season in 2006 and a lot of fun here in AN along the way. Let's just enjoy the ride and get the games going. Thursday can't come fast enough.

I wanted to get ohad to do it
ohad can still do his WPW. You can never have enough information on the future of the ballclub. And anyone who is familiar with Brian's work knows he was running just an awesome blog.

Billy Beane hadn't even heard of
found the keys to the "Holy Grail of Moneyball" during the offseason book report.
Baseballgirl is indeed a gifted and entertaining writer who indeed will go a long way. However, at times last season she got a little too much into the Ken Macha bashing when it was so obvious that our offense was the real culprit. I'm hoping that will change.

i agree
but it's not just saint, as devo claims, but a good percentage of ANers.
some of us would like to think AN is above all that, but it's not.
show me the baseball team whose fans DON'T criticize a good chunk of the decisions made by their manager. there isn't one, the closest would probably be the yankees and braves. and that says more about fans than about managers.

It just made me sick
Instead, we blame Ken Macha for keeping in or putting in the pitcher that turns a 1-0 lead into a 2-1 loss.
HELLO....when you can't get runners in scoring position home, you generally lose games. But it's much easier to blame the manager, I guess

Nothing in the 2005 season was more frustrating
But did people criticize the offense? NO!
Actually, the offense was ripped apart in approximately 140 games last season, and that's a conservative estimate. It was no secret what the 2005 A's flaw was.
That being said, loving the A's as an organization does not mean you can't question the leadership when you think that less-than-great decisions were made. Billy Beane, while far and away the best in the business, is by no means perfect and I'm sure he'd prefer intelligent baseball analysis to hero-worship any day. I think the majority of this site would.
I have learned more about the game of baseball in discussions where two people came from completely different POVs, and whether or not I agree with someone, I always appreciate a good discussion.
Saying "Macha sucks" for no reason is annoying. Backing up this claim is vital. You don't have to agree. You have free reign to believe that Macha makes no bad decisions, or that he doesn't have enough power to make any decisions at all. That's fine. Some would disagree. But what makes people upset who do not agree with your point of view is when you fail to take into account that some people who criticized decisions did so with very intelligent arguments, and enough logic and examples to back them up. Instead of saying how it makes you sick to hear the manager criticized, how about responding to these posts with the same about of reasoning and proof of your own?
It would go a long way.
However, I hear what you are saying, and you can bet that if I make a negative comment about our GM, manager, coaches or players, it will be backed up with exactly why. Then feel free to prove me wrong, and I will listen.

When you don't score runs
The hard reality is that the A's offensive woes are due to the financial limitations that prevent us from signing better players. But who wants to tackle that when it's so much easier to blame a Ken Macha for having the wrong pitcher, the pitcher for having the wrong throw, an umpire for having the wrong call, or a Jeremy Giambi for having the wrong slide.
When we lose a one-run game in extra innings for ANY of those reasons, chances are that the real culprit was the lack of offense that got us there to begin with.
So, if we ever lose a three run lead because of a Ken Macha decision, it'll make much more sense to demand his head on a platter. But when we're nursing 1-0 leads night after night because we can't get runners home in scoring position, the problem is more than just Ken Macha or whoever is on the mound.
When you have little margin for error, everything counts.

I'm not so sure I agree
People occasionally criticize AN saying that the site has a bunch of automatons regurgitating the same cult-like Beane devotion over and over again. But I don't have any problems with people stabbing at Beane or Macha as long as they do it intelligently with a reasoned argument.
So as devo said, I want bbg to be who she is. If bbg feels Macha's making mistakes, well, damn it, I want her to say he is and why. I want strong, intelligent and unique voices. I don't feel the same way bbg does about Macha. I think he has flaws, but what baseball manager doesn't?
