A's take Goleski #1 in Rule 5 draft

[EDITOR'S NOTE: The A's picked up two players today and lost one in the Rule 5 draft. Billy Beane kept true to his word and took an outfielder from the Indians organization rather than the one of the two pitchers everyone was clamoring about. The A's lost Jared Burton to the Reds but also got a pitcher from the White Sox. - Blez]

Guess this throws off the speculation that soria or strop would be picked #1. it seems odd to trade up to #1 if we aren't thinking about keeping this kid, so maybe he'll stick around. he had a decent season at AA, .296 BA, .370 OBP, .528 SLG, . 898 OPS. he's not a kid, though, 24 last year. i know we were looking for OFers, but given the live arms (soria, strop), i'm a bit surprised with this pick. also, jared burton was picked by the reds in the 1st round.

You just beat me
We also picked up Jay Marshall from the White Sox and lost Jared Burton to the Reds. Can't imagine we'd have two rule 5 guys on our 25, so likely one will be given back in the Spring

The bio on Burton
Turns 26 next season, 6'5, 224 lb RHP, played at AA Midland last year, 74 IPs, 4.14 era, 1.32 WHIP, 66 k's, 27 walks.
If the Reds are fighting for a playoff berth they'd have a hard time stashing a guy who wasn't MLB-ready.

I like both these new kids.
Goleski has great power/contact numbers at every level, and Marshall just smoked it in A+ this past season. I'd say they're both AA-ready, and well worth the gamble that they can bring it in the bigs, at least as much as Antonio Perez brought it...

Bobby Kielty
This could be the end of Bobby Kielty.  Non-Tendering Kielty is going to free up 2-Million+ via Arbitration.
  • Goleski could be a cheaper 5th Outfielder Option.
  • Cliff Floyd might cost 2-Million+ (including incentives)

Those two picks max our 40-man roster
And our roster doesn't have Piazza yet. I'll bet that means we take Bochachica off...and bank on Goleski being ready to contribute as the 5th OF?
Interesting.
A little strange for a team like the A's to take a position player here. How can we stash a young, non-MLB-ready hitter on our playoff-contention roster without retarding his development?
With a pitcher, at least you could throw him in blowouts or low-pressure situations. Hitters need regular abs.

Marshall gets a hard look in spring training
If he isn't major-league-ready, the A's can just offer him back to the White Sox. Pretty easy way to get a look at another LOOGY. If he can get the occasional righty out as well, even better. It's a good move, even though as a 23-year-old in A-ball he was "old for the league".

Trade / Tyler Johnson
I also think it's a time to evaluate.  If you like what you see in Spring Training, offer the WhiteSox a player in return.

The A's selected Tyler Johnson (Cards) in the Rule V draft last year (or the year before.  Can't remember).  Anyways, I thought they should have tried to offer the Cards a trade at the end of Spring Training then.  * Wasn't that Tyler Johnson on the 2006 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals???

Anyways, If they like what they see in Marshall, maybe they'll try it this time around???

by Colorado Fan on Dec 7, 2006 8:43 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right before the Mulder trade.

There is a theory that the A's agreed to return Johnson to the Cards as part of the Mulder deal. He wasn't part of the "actual" deal in order to help the Cardinals save face. Think about it, they leave the guy unprotected and a couple weeks later they trade for him to come back? That would look bad.

Anyways, it's a theory and it provides the best explanation (that I've heard) as to why Beane didn't secure the rights to Johnson while he was dealing Mulder.

This guy is dead! We'll list him as day-to-day for possible reincarnation.

Good points
I can tell you're a heck of a lot more knowledgeable about this than I am.
I'm curious, what did we have to do with Thomas/Ginter?
I know that Perez was out of minor league options and that's why we had to suffer with him on the ML bench all year last year.

On a related note, I'm look at our bench and seeing, as it stands now:
Melhuse, Perez (who still can't be sent down), Scutaro, Kielty, Goleski.
Add that to the starting 9 (I'm including Piazza) and you have 14 position players.
That leaves 11 spots for pitchers, including the lefty we just drafted, Marshall.
It'll be hard to keep both Rule V picks. We'll probably trade one during spring.

i agree, this may be the end of kielty
i like him, but he gets paid a decent amount of money - if the goleski kid can hit (and it appears he can), i'd imagine he'd possibly get a shot to be the utility OFer. though if we don't get a starting OFer this offseason, kielty could move into the starters job in LF, at which point goleski could replace him as our 4th OFer.

Keep Kielty
Could this instead be the end of Adam Melhuse? Hopefully Geren will realize that our backup catcher can DH since Kendall never leaves a game he starts. If we sign Cliff Floyd, then it's bye-bye Kielty (obligate Kielty rant -- I'll never understand why he hits left handed).

by gojohn10 on Dec 7, 2006 8:13 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

if we don't get another OFer
absolutely keep kielty. he's not a bad player, and makes a reasonable salary if he's a starting OFer. he absolutely mashes lefties, and he actually wasn't atrocious against righties (though obviously not that good). if we do get another OFer, like floyd (though i think that's unlikely, he seems to want to go to the cubs), then there is no reason to keep kielty.

Gotta keep Kielty...
...as far as I'm concerned, he's an A---and I agree that he should only hit righty---all the time.  If he does, he will improve against right-handed pitching, which he hardly ever sees. Love that red hair and his attitude.

The A's say that they got him to play 99.9% of his time as a DH. That indicates to me that they intend to keep a 2nd catcher like Melhuse.

Misc Goleski facts
Ironically, the Indians left Goleski unprotected but kept Mike Rouse on their 40-man roster.

I caught the tail end of MLB radio's interview of Goleski and he said he was excited for the opportunity, etc., etc. No arcive link yet

Baseball America lists Goleski as having the best outfield arm in the Indians farm system

Goleski was an extra in the Roger Maris movie "61"

Also listed as the Indians' best power prospect
Good arm + power bat = good pick by the front office.  David Forst came right out and said he could make the club as the 4th or 5th outfielder.

More BA on Goleski
8:40 a.m.: Early word in the Northern Hemisphere has the Athletics--after paying $100,000 to the Devil Rays for the rights to make the first pick--selecting outfielder Ryan Goleski with the draft's first overall pick. Goleski, a 24th round pick in 2003 out of Eastern Michigan, has had ups and downs in the minors but finished 2006 at Double-A Akron, hitting .296/.370/.528 with 17 homers and 63 RBIs. Another source, however, indicates the Rockies are concerned righthander Pedro Strop could be the first overall pick. We'll find out for sure a little after 9 a.m.

by Billy Ball 2005 on Dec 7, 2006 9:18 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hmm
Since the D-Rays technically made the pick for us, did they pay the $50k fee or did the A's pay it on top of the $100k trade?

Forst on Goleski
"Our scouts have liked him from as far back as college," Athletics assistant general manager David Forst said of Goleski. "It's unlikely that Jay Payton will be coming back, so [Goleski] could make the club as the fourth or fifth outfielder. He's a young guy with power."

Some select quotes from Indian fans
"NOOOO!!!!!! Goleski is a MUCH better athlete than Shelton! I've seen them both.

"Goleski's a ballplayer, not a DH. Geez, Garko's more athletic than Shelton!"

"Seriously, Goleski has the best arm I've ever seen. Ever. I saw him nail a guy at 3B from deep right field one night. Not even a 1-hopper. The home (opposition) fans gave him a standing O it was so astoundingly good."

"I've been "hyping" Go-Go since I saw that astounding arm of his back with Lake County."

"I saw Goleski play and i really think he could be the real deal."

"I really liked him when I saw him in spring training before the 2004 season. With the big year he put up, I was pretty convinced he had the potential to be a Jay Buhner type of major leaguer. The ball really came off his bat, much better than Garko who was hitting just before him."

PECOTA has Rule 5 draft #1 pick Ryan Goleski projected at a .235/.298/.376 line next year. That's in Cleveland, technically, but it won't change very much if he's in Oakland. It also thinks he's pretty much done growing, the steepest parts of the growth curve having been long since surpassed by the time a typical player hits age 25.

More.

Thanks
That probably sums the situation up as well as anything.

We stole from Cle...
The Best Power Hitter and Outfield Arm in the Tribe's system... my question is why he was not Top 10 in BA's prospects with those ratings.

I think it's safe to assume ...
that we didn't pick him (or buy him, rather) because of his expected 2007 contributions. If he outhits Charles Thomas, that will be good enough to be our fifth outfielder and we'll be content. If he doesn't, we'll likely offer him back.

Brewers wanted Goleski too...

According to the article, planned to keep him on their 25 man roster all year as well.

Marshall
I wrote about both Marshall and Goleski in my Hardball Times column today, and heard from someone in the Rays front office that Marshall was NOT traded to the Rays.  That contradicts everything I've seen online--BA reports that Marshall was traded to the Rays, the A's PR dept reported it, etc.  But I confirmed with him--and he's in a position to know!

So, this is a bit strange, but it appears Marshall may still be an A.

I really like this guy even more:
"That's part of the game, too, failing at times," he said. "My favorite part of the game is just playing. Whether you strike out or you hit a home run, the biggest payoff is when you are challenged and fail -- then come back and meet the challenge the next day with a couple of hits. No matter what, I'm going to go out there and play hard."

-Ryan Goleski

That's an awesome attitude; I hope he dominates.
