A's take Goleski #1 in Rule 5 draft
[EDITOR'S NOTE: The A's picked up two players today and lost one in the Rule 5 draft. Billy Beane kept true to his word and took an outfielder from the Indians organization rather than the one of the two pitchers everyone was clamoring about. The A's lost Jared Burton to the Reds but also got a pitcher from the White Sox. - Blez]
Guess this throws off the speculation that soria or strop would be picked #1. it seems odd to trade up to #1 if we aren't thinking about keeping this kid, so maybe he'll stick around. he had a decent season at AA, .296 BA, .370 OBP, .528 SLG, . 898 OPS. he's not a kid, though, 24 last year. i know we were looking for OFers, but given the live arms (soria, strop), i'm a bit surprised with this pick. also, jared burton was picked by the reds in the 1st round.

The bio on Burton
If the Reds are fighting for a playoff berth they'd have a hard time stashing a guy who wasn't MLB-ready.

I like both these new kids.
Marshall lost...
Bobby Kielty
- Goleski could be a cheaper 5th Outfielder Option.
- Cliff Floyd might cost 2-Million+ (including incentives)
Those two picks max our 40-man roster
Interesting.
A little strange for a team like the A's to take a position player here. How can we stash a young, non-MLB-ready hitter on our playoff-contention roster without retarding his development?
With a pitcher, at least you could throw him in blowouts or low-pressure situations. Hitters need regular abs.

Trade / Tyler Johnson
The A's selected Tyler Johnson (Cards) in the Rule V draft last year (or the year before. Can't remember). Anyways, I thought they should have tried to offer the Cards a trade at the end of Spring Training then. * Wasn't that Tyler Johnson on the 2006 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals???
Anyways, If they like what they see in Marshall, maybe they'll try it this time around???
There is a theory that the A's agreed to return Johnson to the Cards as part of the Mulder deal. He wasn't part of the "actual" deal in order to help the Cardinals save face. Think about it, they leave the guy unprotected and a couple weeks later they trade for him to come back? That would look bad.
Anyways, it's a theory and it provides the best explanation (that I've heard) as to why Beane didn't secure the rights to Johnson while he was dealing Mulder.
Why no promotion?
I think
That would explain it.
Bradford was an undervalued asset
Good points
I'm curious, what did we have to do with Thomas/Ginter?
I know that Perez was out of minor league options and that's why we had to suffer with him on the ML bench all year last year.
On a related note, I'm look at our bench and seeing, as it stands now:
Melhuse, Perez (who still can't be sent down), Scutaro, Kielty, Goleski.
Add that to the starting 9 (I'm including Piazza) and you have 14 position players.
That leaves 11 spots for pitchers, including the lefty we just drafted, Marshall.
It'll be hard to keep both Rule V picks. We'll probably trade one during spring.
i agree, this may be the end of kielty
Keep Kielty
if we don't get another OFer

Forst on Goleski
apparently...
Some select quotes from Indian fans
"Goleski's a ballplayer, not a DH. Geez, Garko's more athletic than Shelton!"
"Seriously, Goleski has the best arm I've ever seen. Ever. I saw him nail a guy at 3B from deep right field one night. Not even a 1-hopper. The home (opposition) fans gave him a standing O it was so astoundingly good."
"I've been "hyping" Go-Go since I saw that astounding arm of his back with Lake County."
"I saw Goleski play and i really think he could be the real deal."
"I really liked him when I saw him in spring training before the 2004 season. With the big year he put up, I was pretty convinced he had the potential to be a Jay Buhner type of major leaguer. The ball really came off his bat, much better than Garko who was hitting just before him."
"Total bullS#$% to lose a guy like Goleski to protect stiffs like Sirkorksi, Rouse and other stiffs."
So THAT's why we let Rouse go.
