State of the Nation - Before the Winter Meetings

State of the Nation for December 3rd, 2006.

[General Management]

  • Managing Partner - Lewis Wolff
  • President - Michael Crowley
  • General Manager - Billy Beane
  • Assistant General Manager - David Forst
  • Director of Scouting - Eric Kubota
  • VP, Sales and Marketing - Jim Leahey
  • December 1st - Athletics name Jim Leahey vice president, sales and marketing. Leahey joins the A's after spending 14 years with Sony Entertainment. This could be a sign that the Athletics have decided to change their approach to the Bay Area market. As many on Athletics Nation have pointed out, the current track the Athletics are on does not seem to work, and a new approach is needed to take attention and revanue away from the Giants, as KICU's Mark Wolfson found out when he opened the pandora's box that is the fan's "honest" opinion. November 29th - A's release Spring Training 2007 Schedule. November 14th - A's announce plans to build 30,000-35,000 capacity stadium in Fremont California, in co-operation with Cisco and the City of Fremont. The field will be named Cisco Field as part of the land agreement between the Athletics and Cisco. The field will be accompanied by a ballpark village with condos and shopping centers. The name of the post-move team has not been decided yet, but Managing Partner Lewis Wolff revealed that "of Fremont" will be included in the name. Key items revealed in the press conference:
  • Double sided scoreboard that allows fans to watch away games outside stadium.
  • No transportation situations were explicitly covered.
  • Stadium will feature many technological features and toys from Cisco, such as buying or upgrading tickets via smart phones, and posting replays on sites such as Youtube.com
  • Stadium is expected to open around 2011
  • Stadium is expected to cost approximately $400 to $500 Million Dollars.
  • October 30th - Oakland Athletics and KIFR announce partnership to make 106.9 FREE FM the Flagship Radio station of the Oakland Athletics till 2009. The CBS owned station broadcasts at a 80,000 Watt signal and will reach all over the Bay Area, with better clarity then 1550 AM and 1220 AM. This makes the A's one of three teams to have stations in their home town on both AM and FM.

[Field Management]

  • Manager - Bob Geren
  • Bench Coach - Bob Schaefer
  • First Base Coach - Rene Lachemann
  • Third Base Coach - OPEN
  • Pitching Coach - Curt Young
  • Hitting Coach - OPEN
  • Bullpen Coach - Brad Fischer
  • November 29th - A's name Bob Schaefer bench coach. Schaefer joins the A's one year removed as the Kansas City Royals Bench Coach from 2002-2005, having spent the 2006 campaign as a Special Assistant with the Atlanta Braves. It remains to be seen if the current pattern the A's seem to have established will hold true though; if Schaefer will end up in three to four years being announced the manager of the Athletics, as former Bench Coaches Bob Geren, Ken Macha. November 16th - Bob Geren is promoted from Bench Coach and named Manager of the Oakland Athletics. Geren, who managed for 8 years in the minors before being promoted to the big league club in 2003, has been with the A's for 8 years. Controversy surrounded the month long interview process, as many A's fans saw it as an excuse to stall until other candidates, including fan favorite and now former 3rd Base Coach Ron Washington, had left for other managerial opportunities, and that Geren was chosen right from the beginning. Other candidates for the job included Ron Washington (hired by Texas), Bud Black (former Angels Pitching Coach, hired by San Diego), Manny Atca (Former Mets coach, hired by Washington), Trey Hillman (Manager of the Nipon Ham Fighters in the Nippon Professional Baseball league), Orel Hershiser (Analyst on ESPN's Baseball Tonight) and Jamie Quirk (Coach for the Colorado Rockies). November 18th - Sacramento Rivercats manager Tony DeFrancesco expresses his desire to be promoted to the Major League club as a coach. The Major League club has three openings for coaching positions, including; Bench Coach (Vacated by Bob Geren's promotion), Hitting Coach (vacated by Gerald Perry) and Third Base Coach (vacated by Ron Washington).

[Transactions]

December 1st - Athletics offer Arbitration to LHP Barry Zito (Type A Free Agent), decline Arbitration to OF Jay Payton (Type B Free Agent). Payton might be able to get a multi year deal elsewhere, but the A's appear to not want to risk Payton accepting and getting more money then they think he is worth. November 28th - Athletics acquire Donnie Murphy from the Kansas City Royals for Cash Considerations. Murhphy, who had a terrible 2006 campaign following a good 2005, will take the place of departed A's farmhands Mike Rouse and D'Angelo Jimenez as the A's AAA Middle infield replacement. November 20th - Athletics purchase contract of Reliever Marcus McBeth. Mcbeth suddenly has value as a very good reliever, having successfully made the transition from unspectacular outfielder with a good arm to solid power pitcher. The move was needed to protect McBeth from the Rule 5 Draft. November 20th - Athletics sign Reliever Erasmo Ramirez to a minor league contract. Minor League Pitching Depth. November 20th - Athletics sign Second Baseman JJ Furmaniak to a minor league contract. Furmaniak will fill in for Sacramento's depleated infield depth. November 20th - Athletics sign outfielder Vince Falson to a minor league contract. Falson will be yet more fill in fodder for AAA Sacramento. November 15th - The Toronto Blue Jays signed DH Frank Thomas to a two year, $18 million dollar contract with a club option for 2009. So much for Thomas's desire to stay in Oakland. The question is if this will hurt the Blue Jays, having an aged slugger with bad feet on Turf or the A's, who lose their main power threat.

[A's Rumors and Speculation]

  • The Oakland Athletics and Texas Rangers seem to be clashing lately. Not only have the Texas Rangers approached former Athletics star Barry Zito, as well as putting feelers out for FranK Thomas before he signed with the Toronto Blue Jays, but they are now vying for Free Agent Mike Piazza, whom the A's are targeting for their Designated Hitter slot. Piazza has been rumored to have narrowed down his list to two teams, the Athletics and the Phillies, with the A's as the frontrunners. If Piazza is signed, he would take over as the A's Designated Hitter, and could as well take over the role of Backup Catcher. If that is the case, it could mean the end of Adam Melhuse's career in Oakland. If Melhuse is dealt or non tendered, and the A's still wish to carry another catcher, former Moneyball pick Jeremey Brown is expected to get the call, filling in as Third String Catcher, a backup for 1st Base and a possible Designated Hitter candidate. Piazza was not offered Arbirtation.
  • The Athletics are interested in outfielder Cliff Flloyd for a one year, incentive laiden deal. If Flloyd is signed, he could take over as the Athletics DH if no one else is acquired. If someone, such as Mike Piazza or Barry Bonds, is signed for DH duties, Flloyd would take over in Left Field, as well as the secondary Designated Hitter. The Orioles are also rumored to be interested in Flloyd. Flloyd and Bonds were not offered Arbirtation.
  • Frank Thomas's arrival in Toronto leaves rookie Adam Lind (1st Base, Left Field, Designated Hitter) out of a job, and will result in Lind starting the year in AAA. Because he is now blocked by Thomas, the A's could try to acquire him to fill their Left Field/Designated Hitter void. The Blue Jays are expected to ask for pitching help.
  • Alfanso Soriano's signing in Chicago leaves a glut in the Cubby outfield. Speculation is that outfielder Matt Murton might be dealt as a result.
  • In Washington, a glut of outfielders might make the situation right to make a grab for Outfielder Ryan Church. Church is rumored to be out of favor with management, and was forced to start the 2006 season in AAA as a result, until finally called up.

good stuff, but
I do not think Bonds would require a draft pick as the Giants did not offer him arbitration

correct
i'd really like to see us get both piazza and bonds.

Isn't that redundant?
2 hitters who can't field anywhere? Both would be DH, why waste the roster spot? And what if Bonds demands to play LF?

by Alon on Dec 3, 2006 1:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

play one (i assume piazza) at first base
piazza can be backup catcher, and bonds can be the backup LF.  bonds was moving pretty well by the end of the year, even in the outfield.  he's no frank thomas.

Bonds was average
in LF in 2006 according to PMR. He's no Jay Payton in LF, but -- then again -- neither is Jay Payton.

i'll take average in LF
if it comes with bonds-level offensive production.
plus, that's average for the whole season, right?  he started out lousy because he was recovering from the knee problems.

the bottom line is, as much as i hate the guy, it's a one year deal and i'm sure the increase in attendance and media coverage would pretty much pay the salary.
given the questions marks in the rotation, the lineup could use both piazza and bonds.  of course, maybe grover can figure out a way to turn kotsay and  calero or duke into a #3 starter...

Gee, you don't ask for much
Brad Penny might be in play if the Dodgers bring back Maddux. A Calero/Kotsay combo wouldn't work straight up but it might be enough to steal a power hitter from a third team, who could then be dealt to LA for Penny. Lotsa moving parts, wouldn't hold my breath on this one.

White Sox are looking for bullpen help. Trade Kotsay for a prospect, tie said prospect to Calero and that would probably be enough to land Vazquez or Garcia. (You could certainly get Garland but he's no #3.)

Vazquez is an interesting case, he adjusted his arm angle in the middle of the 2006 season and got real good results. In 11 August and September starts he posted a mid-3's ERA and rang up 79 K in 72 IP. And since he demanded a trade (after being traded in a multi-year deal) he isn't elligible for FA until after 2008. Arizona is on the hook for a couple million in 2007, dropping his $12.5 million price tag down a notch.

I think a 2-3 year deal could happen at around $12.5 annual. (Hey, you never said the guy had to be cheap and it's not like I've got a world of leverage by dangling Kotsay!)

There might be an outside chance to get Nolasco out of Florida for Calero or Duke + whatever goodies can be had from trading Kotsay.

Aaron Heilman is still looking to leave the Mets' bullpen. A Calero for Heilman deal would certainly work for NY, but maybe there's a chance the Mets would like Kotsay as a deluxe 4th OFer and that would be enough for Aaron. (Yeah, that was a reach. Maybe a 3-way with the proceeds from Kotsay going to NY in exchange for Heilman.)

Not a lot of #3's on the market. White Sox and Mets offer the best bets.

Course, what about CF?
If I can get Heilman without parting with Calero or Duke than I can send one of those two to Philly for Aaron Rowand.

No trading Duke!
Calero, I can almost live with, but Duke? He's the best piece of our pen! Plus, I think the A's feel the same way.

wouldn't you want him gone?

To be honest...
...though obviously any move that makes the team better is the move you have to make as GM, I wouldn't be happy with the move as a fan; I like a lot of the A's, but Duke's my favorite player on the squad.

duke
we could get more for duke than for calero.  duke is better and he could be a closer.

Kotsay on Cubs
would be sweet. That's one of the moves that I thought might happen. Soriano shouldn't play CF, and the pressure of doing so, and, not doing it well would hurt.

I also really like Murton, and I think he's expendable right now. That said, I've always been a fan of Kotsay, so I'd hate to see him go.

The other thought is the Marlins; they've been looking for CF, Kotsay's played for 'em before (with Pinella?).

On rumors - the Pat Burrell for Shane Komine trade I saw in rotoworld...man, I'd do that in a heartbeat (even quicker if the Phillies eat some of the cost)

Zito - my favorite.

by catfish hunter on Dec 4, 2006 10:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

As with my comment on Duke:
Matt Murton is probably my favorite Cub right now (not their best player, but my favorite, and he is good) -- challenged only by Carlos Zambrano.
If the Cubs do trade Murton as you suggest ... well, I guess I'll just have to hope it is to the Oakland A's.

I posted this in the link dump
ESPN Rumor Central (Insider Content)has the A's close to signing Alan Embree to serve as the team's LOOGY.

"The Athletics are close to completing negotiations on a contract with free agent left-handed reliever Embree, reports Buster Olney of ESPN The Magazine. Embree was 4-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 73 games for San Diego last season. Assuming that Oakland is able to sign Embree, it would probably shift left-hander Joe Kennedy, who worked out of the bullpen last year, into the rotation."

I've said this before, but I think that Kennedy in the rotation would put up similar numbers to those put up by Barry Zito this season.

blehhh
I don't like Embree as a reliever OR Kennedy as a starter. But with this market, and what we've got as far as trading chips...this may be the best we can do.

by Philip Christy on Dec 3, 2006 9:45 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Why?
What don't you like about either one?  Check Kennedy's numbers his last full year as a SP(2004 in Colorado).  His numbers were very close to what Zito put up this year, and that was in Coors Field.  Embree is great if used soley vs. LHB, I think he's a great addition if used correctly.

Basically, 2005 is why I don't like Embree
http://www.baseball-reference.com/e/embreal01.shtml

He was sincerely awful, and he's probably only still in the majors because he's a lefty. 2005 wasn't the only time he's completely blown up, he did the same as a Giant back in 2001. I just think he's really unreliable, and in this free-agent market, I really think we can do better than signing Embree, especially for the money he's gonna get.

In truth, after looking at his stats just now, he was fine from when he left the Giants until now, excepting 2005. Still, I don't think he's anything special, and it's even money that Halsey has a better year than he does next year.

As for Kennedy...remember when he started for the A's in 2005? He lost most of the games he pitched down the stretch...not only that, he pitched poorly as a starter for the Rockies in 2005. One good year as a starter two years ago, and everyone thinks he'll pitch nearly as well as Zito? I think Kennedy as a starter is a big risk that could cost us more than a few games next year. Although it might be our best choice for the 5th starter slot, I am not optimistic about it.

by Philip Christy on Dec 3, 2006 11:09 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually
Kennedy's only bad years were half of 2003 and 2005.  He was damn good in 2001, 2002, and 2004.  I think it's reasonable to think he can come close to those numbers.

As for Embree, while he was bad in 2001 overall, he was dominate vs. LHB, averaging 11.03K/9, a 1.11 WHIP, and a .220 BAA.  If he's used solely vs. LHB, I think he'll be fine.  I also don't know how much he'll get this year, I'm guessing similar to the $1.5 million Aaron Fultz got from the Indians.

by gatling on Dec 3, 2006 11:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well...
if Beane were able to sign Embree for $1.5 mil, for just one year, then it would be a hell of a deal. Somehow, in this market, I think he'll go for more...

And Kennedy's ERAs in '01 and '02 were 4.44 and 4.53. That's average, not "damn good". Then he collapsed with a 6.13 ERA in '03. So, as a starter, he's had exactly one good season out of five. No restored confidence here.

by Philip Christy on Dec 3, 2006 11:59 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Kennedy
I think his numbers were damn good when you consider he had all of 73 innings above High A when was rushed to the bigs by Tampa Bay.  He shouldn't have even sniffed the majors until 2003, so pitching league average in the AL East at age 22 and 23, with very limited experience vs. better competition, I'd consider that damn good.

Embree
I like the Embree signing for 3 reasons.

1)If he blows up we can always fall back on Flores or Halsey

2)It allows us the OPTION of having Kennedy start if we can WIN the spot...now it might be all for not if Gaudin, Windsor, Komine, or Myers beat Kennedy out...but at least if gives us an option.

3)This is the part I like most and I'm surprised I haven't herd a lot of people here talk about it.  Kennedy had a break out year last year as a lefty in the pen and he is only under contract for 1 more year.  His trade value is at an all time high right now and the Embree signing lets the A's trade Kennedy if they can get a good offer.

by Threepwood XX on Dec 4, 2006 12:35 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

They both have trade value
I think keeping both of them would be kind of silly.  Maybe they want a TRUE backup OF back (such as Bobby Kielty)?

Signing Embree
doesn't necessarily move Kennedy to the rotation - he's not a LOOGY, but a pretty good 2 inning guy.  It just makes them deeper and may signal the need to trade a quality reliever (Duke or Calero) to get quality in return.
