My .02 on losing Wash...

This started as a comment in regards to Blez's open thread of losing Ron Washington to the Rangers.  As I drafted this, I realized that this was becoming a diary rather than a comment, therefore it became a new diary.

I am happy that Wash has gotten his shot running a big league club, even if it isn't the A's.

When I first heard the news this morning, the two things I thought of was 1) damn, I was hoping he would run my favorite team, and 2) what kind of backlash is this going to have on the Oakland A's community of loyal fans.

Going with the second thought, the popular opinion right now is that Billy Beane goofed.  I don't think this is farther from the truth.

Why?  Because I admire the fact he's taking this managerial approach a little differently.  When he hired Macha back in 2003, a part of it felt to me that he wanted him to manage because he didn't want to lose him to another team, and to keep the continuity here in Oakland.  And at the time a lot of players were happy to see him get the chance.  Four years later now comes of reports that he wasn't a great communicator.  If players thought he was good for the job back in 2003, then he must have been more accessible to the players, but something changed once the job title of "manager" was bestowed upon him.

Last year the possible replacments before Macha came back were all in-house.

What am I saying?  By Beane not hiring Wash or Geren right away, he is showing that he is not doing buisness the same way that he was before.  The same way that he was before obviouisly was not working, so by bringing in all kinds of managerial candidates and conducting a lengthy interview process, he is taking this time around a little differently.  And even if it meant losing Wash to the Rangers, I applaud him for it.  You can even look at the Rick Peterson to Curt Young transition and say that he had no problem with Peterson going to the Mets because he had Young already in his mind to replace him.  It looks like this is the first time in the Beane regime that he had no obvious replacment in his head before he made the change, and he and all of us might be better off for it.

You can be angry about the fact that the Rangers acted faster, but then again this is the difference between Beane and Jon Daniels.  Daniels is still learning on the job.  I'm sure a big selling point for hiring Wash was, not only that he thinks he's capable for the job, but to also weaken one of their division rivals.  I think the Rangers will get better under Wash, but I don't see the Rangers being the latest team to win it all with their next manager after they fired Buck Showalter.

One other thing about Wash lending his expertise to the Ranger infield in making them better: I don't buy it.  One of his primary jobs with the A's during practice was to make the infield better defensively.  This will not be his primary job in Texas.  It could be his primary job to oversee someone on the coaching staff to help make the infield defense better, and if they don't I wouldn't be surprised if he acted swiftly on that matter.  As far as our defense being worse now that he's gone, a few thoughts come to mind:

  • Chavez will not get worse due to his past tutelige with Wash
  • Whoever takes over as manager will continue to stress defense as this is a club built on it, and Wash's replacement here will probably sustain what Wash has done
  • Now you have another Gold Glove voter in Wash who will vote for Ellis for the fine defensive credibility that he deserves
  • Now the question becomes who the next manager of the A's will be.  For some reason, I think he's going out of the orginazation on this one.  He's giving Bob Geren a good shot, and it's clear that Geren is A) the next manager of the A's being smoke-screened by a long interview process so nobody thinks that Beane is just hiring his friend out of friendship, or B) getting his chance at the job but will probably lose out to one of the outside guys.  If I were to put money down on who is getting hired, my hunch is Trey Hillman, because A) he knows how to get a smaller major league club to win the whole enchilada, B) he believes in offensive strategies that work for the personnel you have, and C) going outside of the MLB (since he's now holding a job down in Japan) is the opposite 180 of what Beane has done in the past, hiring guys that only wear green and gold.

I thank Wash for his time with the A's.  And I wish him the best with the Rangers.

Your comment on
Beane doing things differently and taking his time this go around has me wondering that it'd be very interesting to get a look at the A's managerial interview process this year.

Knowing Beane and Co., who knows what psychological and statistical questions they ask the candidates in the interviews.  Someone's probably sitting in the background graphing a personality pie-chart.

I guess Washington wasn't prepared for that.

Interesting stuff
My hunch is Bud Black.  Pitching coach from the top division rival -- knows a thing or two about the Angels hitters.  But that's a hunch.  I agree that the A's will go out of the organization on this.  Thing is, we don't know what's going on in these interviews.

Maybe it's just me, but some of the reaction to Washington's leaving makes me feel like it's one of those recent months of May -- as if the A's have lost 10 in a row and dead in the water.  Yikes.

Well remember
If someone believes that Billy Beane is not God incarnate then they must be communists! You are either with the A's or against the A's! We must not doubt the decisions made, lest we hurt the morale of our players! Onward we go, gung ho! gung ho!

Come on, Amnesiac--
You act like you describe all of AN, yet describe only a tiny minority of AN. Give the community some credit.

Are you sure
it's just a tiny minority? You don't know for sure--I'd like to see you maybe take a poll.

News flash, there, guy
AN is not a unified front, and each new member diversifies the opinions here even more. Maybe when Grover was a newbie, you could take a poll in your head and stand a chance, but I'm 17xx here, and I feel like one of the old crowd, even though I'm totally not. Tiny, perhaps not, but it's not like we're all toeing the party line.

Me too, Nico
I'm a Beane supporter, but I'd like to see that poll, too.

Just this morning I was emailing a friend, mentioning that Beane's popularity among the fans today is lower than I've seen it ever, though it's still above 50%.

I'd be very interested in knowing what Billy's "approval rating" on AN is right now.  Straight up poll, no joke answers, just Billy Beane: approve or disapprove?  Use whatever criteria you think appropriate, and if you can't pick one or the other don't vote.

your bitchin' is tiresome there chum
Beane has made many stupid mistakes...passing on  Washington wasn't one of them. Instead of this whinny crap your offering up, pick a fight that makes some sense and that offers some logic.

P.S.
And now that we have your whinnin' out of the way, the next  manager of the A's will be Geren...whether you, or I, like it or not. Beane, the A's front office or the owner could care less what your, or I, think.

Good Job Big E
thanks for proving my point there. Goes to show you cant even make a satirical comment about anything without someone ripping your freakin head off. Dont like what I say? thats fine, but at no point did I go ahead and tell you to get out of here and go be a Rangers fan. Its called a blog buddy, and believe it or not, sometimes people will disagree with you. What saddens me, is that people like you come around, people who think - "Hey! How dare you mock the way things are done, go be a [fill in MLB team of choice] fan you traitor!"

Uh no.  Because last time I checked this blog was created so that one could voice their opinions about this team. So because my opinions dont match yours I must leave? At any point has anyone said "Jeez BigE, why dont you get the hell out of here and go root for the Rangers! and take all your other buddies who disagree, with you".  As far as I know Nico, BBG, Sal,and Blez, might really disagree with me but at no point has anyone of them said "You know what Amnesiac, why dont you take your opinions somewhere else?"  and Im no rocket scientist but something tells me if anyone has any right to say something like that to me, it is the guys who run this joint.

But for the record, Im not leaving. Yes Nico, you are correct, what I describe is a small minority, there are  a ton of people on here who provide a great enviroment for a good debate on many a things without resorting to frat-guy-like insults and chastising of those who might disagree with the popular belief.

Now to adress he/she who says my bitching has gotten tiresome? I have made (count it) ...1 other comment lately on Billy Beane and heck Ill even provide you the link right here
I think two comments about BB and one which was intended as satire before some people started ripping heads off, does not counts as tiresome. could it be that Im voicing my opinion? ...nah! who does that nowadays?

And BigE Im glad you have a Stewart Jersey, I wouldnt mind having one myself. However, dont go off on someone and question their loyalty to this team and then say youre a true loyal fan because you have a Stewart jersey. $200 doesnt buy you the right to make others think they are lesser fans than you, there are other on here who have gone to the ends of this earth for this team, yet none of them are showing it off like a shinny new badge.

Great diary
Wash did a great job of helping some of our guys improve their defense, but that alone doesn't qualify him for the job as manager.  I wish Wash the best and will pull for him and the Rangers when not playing the A's.  I don't think passing on him was a mistake, in fact it might be the first move in a big offseason.

I'd prefer to see Hillman or Black as the manager next year, in that order.  I think Hillman could part of the newest trend you see the A's get ahead of the curve on, managers with knowledge of the international game and in particular Japanese players.  I'd love to see the A's make a run at Akinori Iwamura to play SS or 2B, with Ellis and Croz fighting it out for the other starting spot and the loser filling the UTL role.

I think you're right A's fan
about Hillman, if he was in Japan for the last four years, he is going to have a pretty good idea about which guys could come over and fill holes for the right price.

I think it would be fascinating to see something like this develop.

Regarding Wash, I'm definitely going to miss him. I also think he is more likely to have a successful career by leaving than he would have if he'd stayed in Oakland. As the new Manager in Texas, he has the opportunity to reinvent himself as he sees fit. It is often difficult for a member of a crew of any sort to step up and become the new leader.

It was posted elsewhere that he might not be a big help to Texas and the best they'll do is 85 wins next year. I disagree.  Assuming Wash is as sharp as we've been lead to believe, I think the Rangers could improve to a 90 win team by some manager initiated tweaks:

  1. An Organization wide focus on pitching to contact, coupled by excellent defense instruction, Wash would need to delegate this, but there are plenty of guys who can coach.
  2. A constant communication to the pitchers to pound the strikezone, we're in it for the whole season, don't waste your arm on out of the zone pitches. A manager doesn't have to be a pitching coach to communicate that this is what he expects. It seems like Texas issued way too many walks last year.
  3. Basic adherence to the "Moneyball" OBP philosophy, the Rangers are well suited to this offensive style anyway, especially at home.
on a different note
I also think bringing in an outsider works for the A's, and especially from the perspective of putting the clubhouse back in order. If BB hires Wash or Geren it sends a status quo is okay message to the team.
An outside guy says: your feedback was listened to and taken into account, but I pick who runs the show here.
I think that is okay.

I do hope BB and the Braintrust is getting a ton of good ideas from all these interviews conducted with everyone.

I'm gonna miss Wash tho.

So, if you want someone who is familiar
with the NPB, why not Bobby Valentine?
On Sunday, Minaya ticked off a list of candidates to join the rotation, and for once this season, none of them was Jose Lima.

by rfloh on Nov 6, 2006 10:40 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't have a problem
with Valentine, I just haven't seen him linked to any managerial job in the bigs.  Hillman has an interview with the A's.  That's the big reason I'd go with him.  If Valentine called and said he's interested, by all means talk to him.  Otherwise, you go with interested parties.

Agree
But:
  1.  Past instruction doesn't guarantee future success - see Zito and Peterson.  Zito's performance declined after Peterson left regardless of what they had discussed in the back.
  2.  Washington voting for Ellis to get a gold glove does absolutely nothing to ensure the A's remain a quality defensive team.
Also, people keep saying that Washington won't be hands on with the infielders in Texas because managers don't do that.  Well, that statement couldn't be further from the truth.  Many managers are very hands on and teach on a daily basis.  It all depends upon who he hires on his staff and what he wants to do.  If he wants to work with Blaylock, there is nothing to prevent him from doing it.  I would be shocked if Texas's defense doesn't improve next year.

Discussed in the back
What is that??  That should read "discussed in the PAST."  That's what I get for posting while watching Law & Order CI.  My apologies.
