SEE YA LATER, MONKEY!

Since 2000, the A's looked a little like this:

That monkey is finally freaking gone.  I know this is a different group and that's exactly the point.  This is a group of players that didn't miss home plate.  That didn't stop to argue an umpire's call.  They didn't misjudge a ball in center field.  They didn't misplay a ball at first base that opened a huge inning for the other team.  For once, it was the OTHER guys who were doing those things.  The A's were the ones making the throw to home to nail someone at the plate.  Of course, he slid.  But that's neither here nor there.

In many ways, the A's wound up being a deeper team.  Granted, they didn't have the monster named Morneau, but they had a guy named Marco who quickly made himself most valuable.  No question in my mind that Marco was the MVP of this series.  He had a contribution in every game.

But it wasn't just about Scoot.  Today, the invisible men known as Chavez and Bradley stood up and made their presence known.  For those of you who said Chavez has never showed up in a big game...you can stop regurgitating that over and over again.  He was enormous today and it wasn't just the home run, it was the walk that allowed Payton to come to the plate.  And Dennys Reyes has been a nightmare to lefties.

So the A's go into territory that they haven't been in since 1992.  It's been 14 long years for A's fans.  Celebrate like you f'ing mean it.  This is a HUGE win for the Moneyball franchise.

The monkey can go write his memoirs for all I care.

The A's are going to the ALCS and as one very astute poster pointed out, you can't spell ALCS without "A-T-H-L-E-T-I-C-S".

Bring on the Yankees or Tigers.  I personally would love to see the Yankees and finish that book that Michael Lewis started years ago.  But right now, I couldn't give a rat's ass who it is...

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!!!  A'S IN 2006!!!!!!!!!BEST FUCKING SEASON EVER!!!

A few thoughts on the ALDS
-The Twins 2 successful sacrifice bunts and a stolen base netted them 0 runs. (The same was true, BTW, in 2002: the smallball twins didn't "manufacture" a single run when they beat us in that series).
-For two of the three games, the Twins DH was Jason Tyner, who hit .312/.345/.353 (OPS .698) this year and .272/.309/.315 (OPS .623) for his career, and ZERO home runs in over 1000 career at-bats. That has to be the most pathetic designated hitter in a playoff series since Dusty used Shinjo and Shawon Dunston there in 2002, but at least the Giants had the excuse of being an NL team. Gardenhire said he used Tyner because he wanted more speed in the lineup.
-The walk of Frank Thomas with no one on and two outs is just unbelievably stupid. Normally it won't blow up quite so spectacularly, of course, but that move was way against the percentages, and the result was poetic justice.
-If it seems like I'm picking on Ron Gardenhire...well, that wasn't my intent, but maybe I am. Ken Macha has gotten a lot of shit here for being too passive, but generally he's pretty good at putting his  best players on the field and letting them play. This series has been a fine example of the opponent getting himself in trouble by not doing that.
-This may seem like an odd thing to say about a team that just allowed 7 runs in 3 games, but if we meet the Yankees next, the part I'm most worried about is our starting pitching. In particular, our starters pitched 19 innings and only struck out 5. That's fine against a team like the Twins where two thirds of the lineup doesn't have any power at all (see Tyner comment above) but against the Yankees we're going to have to miss more bats.
-Another possible concern is that Street continues to look hittable. Maybe the three days off will help some.
-As Blez notes, just about everyone contributed on offense at some point. It's obviously not a dominant lineup like the yankees have, but even without Ellis and Crosby, I think this is the kind of attack that Beane envisioned when he put this team together.
-I really like the position the A's are in now. No more of this "can't win in the playoffs" garbage," but we're still the underdogs, so none of the pressure that favorites have either.
- Whose back is monkeyball going to ride on now?
Some are sabermetricians.

Macha
We just might have to start giving Macha a little credit around here. The A's played with incredible professionalism under pressure. I have to believe a manager has a lot to do with molding the character of a team. These guys are playing good baseball, every game. And we just got a demonstration of how easy it is for good players to not do that - in case we'd forgotten the demos from our side a few years back.

by matthias on Oct 6, 2006 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My problem with Macha
is usually more about how he handles the bullpen, and I thought he did a really good job of that in this series. That was a big key in the A's winning. I never thought I would say this, but Congratulations Ken Macha, you earned it

maligned here because we want so much out of chavy, man it makes it so much sweeter that he played the complete game finally in the playoffs, effortless pick and a killer startup homer after the twins wasted the chances in the first two innings. A's are best positioned in MLB to beat the Yankees
We have the starting/relief pitching and a lineup that can score between 2-12 runs a game i.e a crapshoot that should be a ton of fun to watch.

People said th series with the Twins was a toss-up....I ythink the series with the Yankees would be one.

I think we are -150+ favs vs Tigers- in the unlikely event that happens.

Just today Hopey learned how to throw her hands up in celebration.  So when we clinched, I started jumping up and down, and when she saw the A's throwing their hands up,  she started throwing her hands up in the air. We both were dancing and she watched the whole dogpile (until ESPN suddenly switched to ripping A-Rod).  I gave her a big hug and felt so lucky that I could share that nice moment with her.  Then I decided to check AN, and she decided to run a pink highlighter over the furniture.

Aaaahhhh.

Move east of the Mississippi River.  That's it.  So don't delude y'selves that WHEN we get by the Yanks, WHEN we blow out whoever the NL puts up, ESPN will some how come to finally understand the truth.

ESPN will never respect us.  And that's just fine, cuz it's that much sweeter when we make them look stupid.

props to the Twins
Now that we have beat them down for some revenge for 2002, I tip my hat to their team. They have so many young scary hitters and two stud pitchers. If healthy Liriano were pitching, this series looks different. (On the other hand, we don't have healthy Harden pitching, so fair's fair.)

They play their own version of Moneyball, even though they don't have a book. They get great results on not much money and against any other team I would be rooting for them.

I also feel their pain. Their team looked nervous and they got to make all the stupid plays that plagued our Big 3 era playoffs. They got the tough calls (Torii at the plate).  I hope they have a great year next year (except against us).

by Apricot on Oct 6, 2006 4:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.
Props to the Twins.  I definitely like them better than the Yankees or Boston or the LAAAAAAAAAAngels.   Classy manager, (mostly) likeable players. They have some young stars, and they'll definitely be back.  Think about their starting rotation next season!  And Joe Mauer is a superstar--I think arguably the AL MVP this year.

That said, nice knowin ya, Twinkies, and don't let the door hit ya in the ass on the way out!

>:-D

Good pitching beats good hitting. And vice versa.

by TheBigO on Oct 6, 2006 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Definitely.
The Twins were absolutely fantastic before this series -- they've probably got the greatest mix of defense, pitching, and hitting of any team in baseball. Those young players are extraordinary -- and more than that, so many of them are good, respectable players. The type of guy worth rooting for when they're NOT playing the A's.

And Radke's just a badass among badasses.

Tip of the cap to that team, they're absolutely great -- I'm glad as heck that we beat them, but I don't feel that wicked sense of vindication that beating the likes of the Yankees can bring.

They're a good team, and I can't wait to face 'em again next year.

"This must be heaven," he says.
"No. It's Oakland."

ESPN coverage
Although not nearly as good a player as Derek Jeter - who of course is the best shortstop ever, the best postseason player ever, and probably the best all around player ever - Marco Scutaro did a nice job today helping his team get to the ALCS, where they will face Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees.

Now that they have finally erased the memories of past postseason failures - such as the time when Derek Jeter, in one of his patented brilliant plays, threw someone out at home to win a game - the A's finally get the privilege of playing Derek Jeter's Yankeess again, once Jeter and the Yankees finish off their current opponent this weekend.

There's this guy in our starting nine
All the time,
Scu-scu-scutaro, whoah-oh!

Now he just has the coolest name
And I like the way he plays the game
Scu-scu-scutaro, whoah-oh!

Oh, for a grounder, he'll be there
He'll go running anywhere
He's all we need, every night
He fields so good, if I just say the word
Scu-scu-scutaro, just say the word,
Oh, Scu-scu-scutaro!

Now he's not quite Michael Young
But he is much more fun,
Scu-scu-scutaro, whoah-oh!

Oh, tell him to swing, give him the sign
He'll hit it down the line
Scu-scu-scutaro, whoah-oh!

I'm just glad to have him on my team
We see him in pre-game and we cheer and scream
He made me nervous, he signed my shirt
And he fields so good when I just say the word
Scu-scu-scutaro, just say the word,
Oh, Scu-scu-scutaro!

Think about the moments from this series
Zito-Santana duel, with Thomas going off.
Kotsay inside the ball park homerun (shirt out, fist pump at the plate)
Mar-Co Scu-Ta-Ro chants in bottom 7 answered with the huge double.

Amazing stuff.

by waltweissforever on Oct 6, 2006 5:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, brilliant set of games
Three great wins for the A's.  Zito's gem (one strikeout, a lot of balls hit to A's fielders) and Frank's bombs in Game One set the tone.  And the Kotsay ItPHR--with two outs, no less.  Finally, Eric and Milton with the power today, and Marco with the dagger.  A true team effort.

Just got back from 236!
What a game!

Only two of our position players had not contributed in the first two games: Chavy and Milton.

Chavy was clutch in the second!

Milton made it double-clutch in the third and triple-clutch in the sixth!

What can I say about the Duke?!

And Marco:

Can you say series MVP???

The Marco chants were electric when he stepped to the plate in the 7th!  They only got louder as Jimenez stepped to the plate after his double!  And they did not abate as he came out to SS the next inning.  My lungs are tired!

It was a sweet comeuppance for those of us who doubted him!

I have a great story for ya
although, alas, not a first-hand recap of the events at the Coliseum today.

My older sister likes baseball. She always has, since our family as a whole lives and breathes baseball. But she's not much of a fan of one team. We took her to the third game of the A's/Rockies series in June, the awesome game, where Swisher tied it up in the ninth with his second HR of the game off Fuentes and it went into extras before the A's won it.

As you may or may not know, my younger sister (cirquegirl) and I were screaming and cheering like lunatics, but rather overlooked was the contribution of our older sister. But she was totally involved, got nervous when Zito got into jams, and was cheering heartily when he got out. She was as wracked with nerves in the bottom of the 11th as we were.

We're I are both off at college now, while cirquegirl's at home. My older sister and I talked for almost an hour today, exchanging stuff about baseball, cheering, and explaining our mutual nervousness. I said that I wouldn't check the game, since it would give me heart failure. She thought that she might, but agreed that the pressure might give her heart failure. (Whenever her roommate is out of the room, she hijacks the TV and watches baseball games).

Well, a little while ago, I called her back and said, "I lied," completely smugly. I began recapping the key points of the game - she didn't know how it had turned out - and by the time I got to Scoot's double, she was DYING. "DID THEY WIN?!"

I happily informed her that they had. She cheered loudly, and then admitted that she'd been off at some gallery exhibition, where there had been three TVs, one of which had been showing the game. She said that she couldn't even go near the game - she was tempted. "I could just peek in...maybe... NO! What if it's going badly?!"

We mutually exalted in the A's victory. I need to buy her an A's hat for Christmas. I've turned her into a total fan. :D

"I could just kiss Marco on the mouth right now," Zito said. "What an unbelievable game. If that's my last one here, wow. How could I ever forget it?"

Mrs. Ice Cream and I just returned...
from the most incredible, wonderful, satisfying A's win that we've ever experienced.

The Coliseum was f'n rocking!

Just before Chavy's blast I said to my wife that now would be a good time for him to break out and silence all the critics. He's played so hurt most of the year. Dude is a f'n warrior. And his double off the left field scoreboard was smoked as well. Chavy's back. (Don't even think about walking Thomas now, bitches!)

And then there's "Thoroughly Modern Milton".

Let's put his "past" to rest. His home run to center was a no doubter. When he nailed Hunter at the plate the place exploded! To all comers, you're on notice. Milton is not the Bradley of old.

Finally, what more can you say about Marco Scutaro. Before he came to the plate, everyone knew what he was capable of and what he could do and the chanting began.

"MARCO!"

"SCUTARO!"

It continued ever louder into his at-bat until that magnificent, two-out bases-clearing double when it crescendoed into delirium! What an indescribable feeling to have the 35,000 plus fans screaming in unison,

"MARCO!"

"SCUTARO!"

The yells continued in homage and appreciation as Scoot stood at second base and through to the last out of the inning.

If any A's player sums up the underdog nature of this team, it has to be Scutaro. And I just heard Cotroneo's call of Scutaro's at-bat and have to say it's his best call ever. Better than Kots' inside-the-park home run. He and Fosse perfectly summed up what was happening at the ballpark before, during and after the at-bat.

"Pandemonium!"

We freakin' LOVE Marco Scutaro!

This was THE game of the year.

Bring on the ACLS!

the future conan
Its amazing how scrumptulescent this a's team is.  Although being transplanted in Chicago, you would never know the a's win games, according to homer harelson the a's have never beaten the white sox, but rather the sox give the a's wins, and it seems homer has been giving lessons to the espn guys because apparently the a's still haven't beaten the twins.  Let em stew in their own juices I say.  P.s. just read in the chicago trib today that FOX has hired AJ d-bag to be an in studio analyst for the ALCS and series.  Buck, Mckarver, and D-bag, welcome to completely unwatchable tv sound.

It is amazing how this season has played out.  I was able to go to all three a's games in chicago and made it out to oakland for the ranger's series at the beginning of august.  I'm in the video the DYE homerun in game 1 of the Frank return to chi series (the one in the A's jacket and hat behind the sox pen).  Anyway, i remember sitting there as the sox were sweeping and being so mad because the a's were so incomplete and not at full strength and it KILLED me that they weren't able to shut these sox fans up (the degree my hatred of D-BAG since I came here has exponentially risen).  Then to get a chance to go to Oakland and catch this team in a home environment was unbelievable.  Chavy's pick dive tag at third and throw to first for the double play was unblieveable.  That play actually settled Loaiza down and set up his great August in my opinion.  The crowd was amazing and I just hoped I would get the chance to return in October.  But being this transplanted it'll take the A's getting to October 21, so here's to the future.

That was quick
Danny was being interviewed for ESPN when a guy off to the side asked the following. You can' really hear the question because he wasn't that close to the mic and the party in the background.

Question: "[blahblah can't hear it] nationally I don't think anyone expected you all to [can't hear] and getting past the Twins, and you ended up sweeping them. Do you feel vindication for a team that's been under the radar most of the year?

Haren: Nobody picked us. I mean, we watched the same things everyone else watched. We watched BBTN [sort of smiles at the ESPN guy], we watched Karl Ravech pick the Twins, these guys pick the Twins, everybody picks the Twins. No one gives us a shot. Um, I think it just makes it even a little better because no one expected us to handle our business in the MetroDome. We came back home and closed it out the way we wanted to-- in front of our fans and we're able to celebrate like this.

by smasfan on Oct 6, 2006 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No respect and coverage, unfortuately...
until we win it all.  That's what makes Athletics Nation so valuable, because we actually follow this team and can all agree and see how we win these games when the entire rest of the world can't, or won't.  The solid fundamentals, defense, pitching, working the counts, adjustments, the grinding tenacity of this group of players...you gotta watch this team everyday to appreciate and see how it's done.

So just try and ignore KNBR, ESPN, HH etc. Let's face it, what they consider NEWS is all on the fringe of the actual GAME ITSELF.  Sports talk radio and commentary feeds off controversy and negativism, and a lot of is manufactured just to generate the ire of others and boost ratings.  Why else would we watch 3 hours of TO coverage without a break?? Jeez.

Well I just say F@$%)(*&'em all..keep the good vibes flying.  This is a great win, regardless of what happens next..the naysayers are silenced.  And of course we all have a FEELING about this team.

IT'S OUR YEAR...GO OAKLAND!!!!!!!!

Right on the Money
All these media outlets make me pull my hair out. I am in the Northwest and these guys up here continue to talk that Oakland go some good bounces and pulled this off.

Fine, no respect. i pretty much don't give a you know what anymore. Bring on NY. bring on Detroit. What I would love is to play the Yankees and then play the Mets and whip them both.

Why don't people give respect where it is due? We have had unbelievable pitching and defense yet, we only won because Hunter and Morneau goofed. ? go figure. Guess Marco, Chavy, Milton, and Big Hurt didn' t have any clutch hits in this series. It was because 2 guys messed up for Minnesota.

How annoying,  I wanna start my own sports radio station.

What an amazing game
This entire season has been one sensation after another!

Chavez' homer really set the tone of the day. He didn't just hit it hard, he CRUSHED it. Bradley CRUSHED his homer to center, and that was going to be it. Haren battled through, keeping the lead and stranding guys right and left.

SCUTARO. Wow. You KNEW he was going to do it, and then he did it. We were making sure section 114 chanted Marco (boom boom) Scutaro (Boom Boom Boom) until we were hoarse. The guy was clutch and every single A's player running back on the field during the inning change had to pay homage - even Jimenez.

DUKE came up big, and classily handed the ball over to STREET in the 9th, who put runners on but closed it out.

I loved the energy. I loved seeing the celebration IN OUR HOUSE. I loved the terrible towels, and seeing Baseballgirl, and Mcfood, and English Major, and representing AN. I love the fact that Thomas didn't have to hit a home run for us to win. I love the fact we're in the ALCS and can rest up while the Tigers smack around the Yankees. They can go the full five and go extra innings in every game until they should both quit.

THIS TEAM IS GOING PLACES. I won't pull a Blez and drop an F-bomb. Who knows when these words will come back to haunt?

We are IN IT TO WIN IT and WIN IT we are doing.

GO A's! Go Scoot! Go Bradley, Chavy and Big Hurt!

Just got home
On a chilly, cloudy day, we made our own heat and light at the Coliseum... I've never been in a crowd that was more into a game -- including the two World Series I witnessed as a Twins fan.  Speaking of Twins fans, those few that showed up were treated with great courtesy, so far as I saw. The only people in my area who got hassled were a woman in full Yankees regalia and the ESPN crew, and even they got nothing more than the appropriate chorus of "Yankees Suck."  And no Wave whatsoever.  We are true fans and not bush.
Let's have two more like this!

One guy had a broom up (for the sweep) with a sign that said "Thanks Tory". The idea was good, but the guy so butchered the name, so it made him look like a 'tard.

Second - on the tunnel to the A's dugout was a sign that said, "Hey ESPN, where's the love?" with the love represented by a heart.
