Frank Thomas Files for Free Agency

Today, on the first possible day to file free agency, one day after the conclusion of the World Series, Frank Thomas, as well as Barry "Steroids" Bonds and Nomar "Rain Delay" Garciaparra, filed for free agency. This means that while the A's may continue to negotiate with Thomas and his agent, that their days of exclusivity are now gone.

In all, 59 players filed for free agency, including such notables as former A's closer Arthur Rhodes, former A's closer Octavio Dotel, and (if AN had their say) future A's outfielder Craig Wilson.

As you already know, Thomas (The Big Hurt) was the A's team MVP this year, coming off two injury-plagued seasons with the White Sox to slug 39 homers with 114 runs batted in.

Previous to the filing, Thomas has expressed a strong desire to remain with the A's, and they were said to be discussing a two-year deal. As much as we can be optimistic and say it's a given he would come back, I won't relax until we see him resigned. If negotiations were to go awry, it would be a huge blow for this franchise.
