2006 Oakland A's (April-October) RIP

In hindsight, the A's never really had a chance in this series. They have absolutely no clue how to hit Kenny Rogers and absolutely no clue how to get Placido Polanco out. Every decision Leyland farted out there would be turned to gold by overachieving players, excellent ones and mediocre ones alike, and the few mistakes Ken Macha made would be compounded by his players' inability to make him look good.

What it came down to today was that Street visibly ran out of gas with two out in the 9th, but had to face Monroe, Polanco, and Ordonez anyway because Duchscherer was ailing and Calero had been spent pretty much for nothing. Two game-winning two-run HRs fell but inches short of giving the A's a chance to win 5-3, and it wound up an exciting loss with equal emphasis on "exciting" and "loss".

From early in Game 1 to the end of Game 4, it was simply the Tigers time to play in the World Series. The A's, built on starting pitching, would fail to get a single quality start in the ALCS. Frank Thomas didn't get a single hit. You're not going to win too many series under those circumstances.

But all I can keep thinking to myself as I ponder what it feels like to get swept in an LCS is that 26 teams didn't have the chance.

I'm proud of the 2006 Oakland A's. And I can't wait for Spring Training, 2007.

Congrats
To the Tigers. They deserved it. Hopefully they win it all.

Mr. King would be proud...
...This incredible run ended on a cloudy, overcast day, almost mirror to how it began 6 odd months ago.  As we all know, this is a game of inches - if Thomas had been an inch earlier in game 2, bottom 9; if Chavy had played an inch towards third, allowing Scutaro to start the double play; Bradley's whack today - and we simply came up short.  O, what could have been...but as sad as I am today, we that bleed the Green and Gold most acknowledge the steps we took this season: we won the AL West, we got out of the first round, and we reminded the baseball world what a bunch of bad ass ball players we have, with the third lowest payroll and the third highest amount of World Series Rings.  We are the Oakland Athletics, we tip our hats to Leyland and a hell of a Tigers team (which will win it all, after slaying us and the Evil Empire), and I can't wait to see what Beane comes up next!  OAKLAND ATHLETICS 4 LIFE.

Well said.
In the eyes of the baseball Gods, this was the Tiger's time to shine. But at least the A's in Games #2 & #4 fought to the very end and that is all you can hope for.

Love my A's!

Could we have hoped
they fought to the end of games 1 & 2 as well?  How about at least 1 hit from the Big Hurt?

I too hope the Tigers win it all.
And yeah it was pretty bad losing in a sweep, but at least we made it this far by winning in a sweep, and that I am happy about.

For now I will retreat to MLB 2k6 where the A's are 54-2.

It feels weird huh...
Everyone had already accepted losing the division last year, but now I don't even know what to feel now.

But thanks Blez, Nico, BBG and all the others of the site........ There will always be a place to talk to other A's fans.

Tip my cap to Detroit.
Outplayed the A's all series in every phase of the game.  The better team won, without a smidgen of a doubt...congrats to them.

Great season by the A's....Not many people thought mid-season they would be in the ALCS, top my cap to them for always grinding it out and working hard.  A fun freaking team to root for all season.....Can only speak for myself, but I definitely appreciates all the great moments they gave us.

the tigers completely outplayed the a's
having said that i feel the a's deviated from
their game plan that got them to the alcs in
this series especially the hitters. detroit's
offense showed more patience, situational
hitting, the ability to take the ball the
other way while oakland were hacking early
in the count, grounding into double plays
and just not getting anything done with
runners in scoring position.

by oak1 on Oct 14, 2006 5:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wait a minute--
grounding into DPs and not hitting with RISP is the heart and soul of the A's game plan.

You mean they didn't do that all year on purpose? Ooh, yikes.

I'm glad it was the Tigers
It sucks to lose to any team.  Losing to a team you can respect and cheer for is a lot less galling.  I would breaking stuff if it were the Yankees.  I really do hate Pudge, Rogers, and that fucking redneck homophobe Jones, but the rest of the guys I can cheer for.

I have to say a few things.
  1.  I can't believe it's over.
  2.  But man... wow, what a season.
  3.  I'll miss you, Barry Zito.
  4.  The thought of the dreaded offseason is scary.  Damn.
  5.  Can we PLEASE have a ST countdown on the homepage?  Like, right now?  That would help with the healing process.
  6.  I hate Kenny Rogers.
  7.  I won't be rooting for the Tigers in the WS.  I just can't bring myself to root for a team that beat us.  I hope they get swept.
  8.  I love AN.
  9.  I hate offseasons.
  10.  My god, this sucks.

Arguably the best we've had this century.

Congrats to the Tigers, and the best of luck to them.

A shame though, that Barry Zito's last start as an A was that Game 1 debacle.

'Tis over... which sucks
I'm with you Nico. What the heck was going on to pull Calero after 1 batter, especially with Duke down?

It's kinda symbolic of the 2006 season. The A's played the series with a 24 man roster and it bit them in the ass.

Why yes. I am a ray of warm and fuzzy sunshine.

by grover on Oct 14, 2006 5:11 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Before the season started,
I stated a concern that Calero would struggle because he would fall too much in love with his slider. Then all season he mixed in more fastballs--until the AB to Ordonez.

But Calero should have been in to face Monroe in the 7th, or not at all. The way it played out left Huston hanging out to dry in the 9th for no good reason. Which is especially a shame because while he got tagged with 3 ER and the loss, I thought Street was the real hero today.

And almost Kotsay, and almost Bradley. Grrr...

Totally agree - Street was a hero tonight
despite the home run.  I just wish they had learned from Ordonez' first home run and pitched him away instead of inside.  I blame Kendall for that, not Street.

I only wish all 4 games had been that exciting. It's too bad that grinding doesn't work in the ALCS. :-)

Maybe this will drive down Big Hurt's price for 2 years.

I thought about that too
But do we still want him after this?  Are we expecting that next post season (if we even make it) he'll be a year older but better able to hit good playoff pitching?  I thought Frank was exposed by all the great Tiger Pitching.

by jakarta on Oct 14, 2006 5:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I still want Big Frank
Even if it's true that he is unable to hit in the playoffs -- and I don't believe it is -- I still want him to help us GET to the playoffs.

Also, he's just so cool.  I love that huge man with the beautiful smile.

I kind of look at that too...
I see the '01 Diamondbacks, the '02 Angels, the '03 Marlins, the '05 White Sox -- and perhaps I'll see the '06 Tigers -- all these "upstart" teams that win the ultimate prize, and I wonder, "Geez, if these teams did it, you'd think the A's would've won it all by now!"

Then again, think about how Cubs fans must feel...

I wish I didn't get so emotional about this.
But that's part of being a fan.

It was a great season. Right now I can only think about the last few crappy games, but hopefully soon I'll have blocked them out, and I'll remember the joy of winning the division and the ALDS.

We were one of four teams playing for a chance in the World Series. One of four. I'm proud of our boys for making it this far. I'm proud of them for sticking with it, even with all the injuries. I'm proud of them for playing their hearts out and for giving us a great ride.

And I'm really glad I can't see their reactions to this, because just imagining them is making me cry more.

We just got beat. I guess that's all there is to it.

My heart hurts.

Thanks for the memories
Winning the division and erasing that 9 game losing streak in series clinching games made this the best A's season this century. The Tigers were a buzzsaw, so what are you going to do? I am expect us to win the division next year because a healthy Harden makes us simply too strong pitching wise, offsetting the loss of Zito. So once again it was a great season and I expect us to be in the playoffs next year.........hopefully with everybody healthy!

...is that the series wasn't a classic, whether the A's won or not.  And I really wanted the A's to win at least one game.

But, as stated before, the Yankees won't win it all.  That's my No. 2 wish every postseason.

My number two wish...
is the Giants getting eliminated, the Yankees #3, the Red Sox #4, and the Angels #5 (if we ever play them in the playoffs).  Why the Angels a lower priority?  If they hadn't beaten the Giants in '02 I SWEAR that I would never have watched/followed/listned to baseball again until the A's (still in Oakland hopefully) won another world series.

If there was one team we had to lose to this is the one that hurts the least.  An exciting team, good story, in a town that could use a winner.  I would argue that Hardens start today was a quality start - he battled like a true warrior.  same could be said for Harden's effort yesterday.  Not to be cliche but...we'll get em next year!  Thanks A's!!

In the end, it just wasn't meant to be.  Everything really seemed to go for the Tigers this whole series...Kotsay's near bomb.  Bradley's near bomb.

But great teams create their breaks and while these lovable muppets were full of so much heart, they lacked the depth to survive so many injuries in the end.  I don't know if you saw it but Chavez looked like he was in a ton of pain today.  Kudos to him and Kotsay for playing through injuries that obviously hobbled them.

it's too bad they were swept, but i'm proud they got as far as they did.  my main thoughts now are:
  1. street did an incredible job in the 7th and 8th.
  2. i'll miss barry zito.
  3. the tigers are a likeable team and i'll most likely be rooting for them in the world series.

by beijing on Oct 14, 2006 5:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Detroit played well
They played well and deserve their chance to shine in the World Series.

But I'm not ready to forgive these A's for this feeling and for getting swept.  All I ever ask out of the A's any season is two things: make the playoffs, and win the last game.

But this offense was not good over the whole season, as much as we might wish to say 'look what they did in the second half', over the big sample size... this team doesn't hit very well.

We don't have flamethrowers in the 'pen, well Gaudin and Street, but as good as our pen was, they still never felt like a top three pen.

There will be plenty of time for level headed analysis of the season and the roster, but now is the time for grief and pain and blame.

This sucks.  Bad.  Getting swept sucks bad. It's embarassing for for all of us.  Yeesh.

by jakarta on Oct 14, 2006 5:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

another thing that sucks
Is that we just played two whole post season series and got just 3 home games.  Part of getting into the playoffs is having more revenue.  In past years, Beane could use Post season revenue to up the budget and I assume that Wolfe will let Beane operate the same way.

If we had won the ALCS in 4 games instead of 3, and if we had just lost in six games to the Tigers,  that's two extra home games and a bunch more revenue which we need to boost our payroll.

by jakarta on Oct 14, 2006 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Home field in a 7-game series
doesn't seem to me to be a good revenue-generator.  The only time you host more games is in a 7-game series.  Even a 6-gamer only splits it 3-3.

What if they went to a 3-3-1 format?  That would certainly give the "home" team a bigger revenue boost, and make it harder for the "road" team to split the first 2 and try to win out at home.

Honestly
I don't see any reason to thank Jerome Williams.  Without him, we would have had Rouse instead of Jiminez, and IMO, had a slightly better chance this series.

If Williams can become what we think he can, it won't matter...but that remains to be seen.

Tigers had that
relentless, go-to, go at-em, go get-em energy.  It wouldn't stop.

To be sure, they appeared to have pooped out in the latter part of the regular season.  But then how were they able to muster such incredible energy and aggressive attitude?

Discovering that the Yankees could be beat really recharged them, I guess.

How do we develop that kind of aggressiveness for next year?  Please someone tell me.

I won't miss Zito
at all.  In fact, if he gets as much as Boras is asking (and what Boras client doesn't get what he asks for), he'll be the most overpaid pitcher in baseball.  I appreciate what he did for the A's, and was glad he got to experience a first round win, but it's difficult to watch games he starts.  Even when he's on, his pitch count gets elevated early and he nibbles.  I get so tired of hearing him say after poor outings "I just wasn't aggressive in the zone and nibbled."  I wish him luck, but of the guys that have left the A's, I felt worse about the others.

The A's Season Ends With a Bang, and a Sweep
Just as quickly as the A's had dispatched the Minnesota Twins in the ALDS, sweeping them in three games, they were easily handled by the World Series-bound Detroit Tigers, who wrapped up their four game sweep of the A's tonight with a bottom of the ninth, two outs, three run home run by Magglio Ordoñez, making the final tally 6-3 in their favor. Comerica Stadium erupted in celebration and shouting, just as McAfee Coliseum had done just a week and a half ago, when the A's had clinched an ALCS birth for the first time in 14 years. But this time, the A's left the field, some hanging their heads, knowing that tonight's game was the last they will play in 2006, having come so close, but left so far from reaching the goal - a World Series title.

In the months to come, as individual players and plays are dissected and examined, there may be much made of Mark Ellis' injury, Eric Chavez's comments that the Tigers were the better team, Frank Thomas' lack of hitting in the series, and as always, the same platitudes regarding Moneyball and how the A's "stuff" just doesn't work in the playoffs. But even in this loss, we are pleased with how the team forged its way into one of the last four to be playing, as 26 teams had long gone home. Despite a payroll that came in at one-fourth the size of the bloated New York Yankees, and tens of millions less than the division rival Angels, the A's were the ones playing deep into October.

2006 was the first time I've ever owned season tickets for the A's, and though driving up and down Highway 880 twice a week for an entire summer got tedious, I can't think of any time I was disappointed I went. The more than 40 contests (and likely 50, including Spring Training and playoffs) we took in this year were a fantastic way to follow the team up close and root them on to the best of our ability. We know they aren't perfect, and today's loss (as with the previous three) is disheartening, but as fans, we just need to take a deep breath, and move on. We will find other obsessions to focus on through the cold, lifeless, winter months, be they other sports, politics, and as always, there's plenty of work to do at the office. And there's always Athletics Nation. That crowd of A's fans is always ready to talk green and gold, regardless of the date, all year round.

Tonight, we'll feel empty, and all next week, we will have to take sympathy and make excuses for the loss to colleagues who see us representing the team, but we'll pull through. I wanted to say thanks to the A's players, management and ownership for putting together such a great season with such likeable players, and we hope to push even further - in 2007.

Caps of to the Tigers
They played great baseball. Softens the blow when you get beat by a good team.

Some disappointment, yes, with the way things transpired in the ALCS, but overall, it was a wonderful season, with plenty of ups-and-downs, but lots of ups to enjoy. Most of all, my very first playoff game in person was a wonderful experience - I am very happy I was able to participate in the ALDS clincher.

Can't wait for next season!

by Kaiser99 on Oct 14, 2006 5:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Quick thoughts
-- As I mentioned on the game thread, I find it difficult to dislike the Tigers at all.  They were a baseball joke three years ago, and look at 'em now.

-- I don't even hate Kenny Rogers.  Why?  Because he's really good, especially against the A's, and got redemption for all his past postseason failures?  Because he has been a bit of a pill in the past?  Who cares?  Frank Thomas and Milton Bradley were jerks elsewhere, or so I've read.  Does that stop us from liking them here?

-- I don't like being swept, but the team got mediocre to bad starting pitching, nothing or very little from its two big boppers, and subpar defense even from its Gold Glover.  You play like that and you get swept.  That's what happened to the Twins.  We deserved every loss, and can't blame this or that boneheaded player decision or managerial move - though some were questionable.  The Tigers were superior, end of story.

-- Frank Thomas' market value went down.

-- Milton Bradley's market value went way up.  We might want to take a chance and sign him to a longer-term deal while the rest of baseball is still frightened of him.  His will to win was inspiring, and his tribute to Leyland was a classy move at the end.

-- Goodbye, Barry.  You provided a lot of fun moments, and were good far more often than you were maddening.

-- Chavez needs to get healthy.  His various ailments seemed to hamper his defense in this series.  Chavez is what he is, but he's a better player than he showed in 2006.

-- Mark Ellis is a very important player on this team, even when he's not hitting.  This series proved that, if nothing else.

-- I am not counting on Rich Harden, but if he can have a healthy season, the A's won't miss Zito too much.

-- The team overachieved when you consider the overall talent, run differential, injuries, et cetera.  They will need to get a lot better just to win the same number of games next year, and the Angels look like a formidable rival now that their rookies are seasoned.

-- Feel sad?  Think about AN Day, even if you weren't there.  That game (ending with Bradley's three-run homer against B.J. Ryan) was the most fun I've had at an A's game in a long time.

by bear88 on Oct 14, 2006 5:27 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

All good points, bear88
Watching the series, I'm convinced that Chavez' leg was bothering him more than it bothered him in September or in the ALDS. He looked laborious going to his left. Even the "nice" play to get a fielder's choice in the middle innings--I thought it should have been a DP without Chavy having to dive. His lack of great defense hurt us a couple times, as did a myriad of things.

But if Chavez was hurting, with Harden rehabbing on ALCS time, and Crosby, Ellis, and Duchscherer too hurt to play--how good a chance did the A's really have?

oh nothing much
...he just played "the greatest and best song in the world... (tribute)"

but no, seriously, I guess he pointed at Leyland and gave him the ol thumbs up after the other A's had cleared. I guess they kinda tipped their hats to each other and shared "a moment" but since there were no caffinated beverages involved, you WILL NOT see it replayed on SportsCenter.

Agree on many of your points
Especially the point that the A's will need to get better if they want to play in October next year.  Your point about Chavez is one of the areas for hope; he is much better than he showed this year.  Please spend this winter at an athletic facility improving your conditioning Chavez, because we need you healthy next year if we are going to hold off an Angels team that it going to improve most likely.
Please let 2006 be the year, and without an earthquake this time.

I agree the Angels will be better--
Part of my optimism for 2007 stems from the fact that I could easily see the 2007 Wild Card coming out of the AL West. The A's need to try to build a 93-95 win team and let the rest take care of itself.

Different season, same story. Tons of talent but he can't stay healthy. I definetly want him back in 2007 but I'm hesitant to pay him big money over a 4-5 year deal. I think he'll do like JD Drew did, he'll stay healthy all/most of 2007 as part of a contract push but revert back to his injury plagued days in 2008.

I don't understand why every year I get so disappointed the A's didn't win the World Series when they have only done it once in my life, lol. Maybe it is I just hate seeing the season end. I remember in '89 watching the credits to the game till the end and frantically searching the TV channels for anything about the A's. I guess you follow a team for 162 games through April to October and it is hard to let go. The feeling I have right now is very similar to when I break up with a girlfriend, that weird sinking feeling. I'll miss the 2006 A's, I thought they could do it, Better luck in '07

I knew it
You can always "Hope", and for a couple of days before this series started, I could picture the A's playing in and possibly winning the World Series.

But when the Tigers beat the Yanks I knew we would lose.

We would lose because it's what's right for Baseball, what's best for the game.

Just look at the trend, as someone mentioned in an earlier post: The White Sox, The Red Sox, The Angels. All these heartbreak ballclubs winning it all and relieving thier fans from years of painful failures in one shining moment.

I'm not saying it's a conspiracy, only an incredible coincidence where even the best authors couldn't write better stories, or better MLB business plans for that matter.

Next year, The Cubs will win it, take it to the bank. If not next year, then soon.

What sucks most is that we were swept. A completely and utterly ineffecient ballclub that has once again proven all the haters correct. I could handle losing to this ballclub, but to have home feild and to not even win one freaking game is a downright embarrassment. Blez wrote after the ALDS that "the monkey was off our back", I whole-heartedly disagree. It's the same old crap. The only difference being that the A's won one more game than usual in the ALDS.

Please pardon my candor. I've been away from the site for a long time. It's been a rough year for me and I'm deeply hurt right now. The A's have been one of the only bright spots in my life the last few months and have really kept me going everyday. As of right now I feel like the only thing I have to look forward too is signing my divorce papers in 28 days, and I'm not looking forward to it in a good way.

Thanks A's for another fun year.

Great Season, Too Early To Worry About 2007?
I was deeply pessimistic about this club at the All Star break.  I never could have imagined all of those guys --Ellis, Scutaro, Bradely, Thomas, Kotsay, even Kendall--hitting the ball so successfully in the second half.  The first half was so frustrating because so many games you just felt like, if they could just hit .240 with RISP, they could win.

The second half was just so satisfying and so much fun.   And then the Minnesota series was just awesome.  Thanks, A's!

I do wish the A's had played better in this series.  Game 1 was as bad a game as they played all year.  You can say what you want about the great Tiger pitching, but Robertson was horrible in Game 1.  It looked like he was throwing batting practice and the A's hit the ball hard practically every at bat ... until there were runners in scoring position.  At which point the A's gave away at bat after at bat by swinging at tons of pitches way out of the strike zone.  That Swisher at bat with runners on second and third was just awful.  I really think the A's should have won Game 1 easily.  As it is, if Chavez makes that play -which he made every day all day during the entire regular season- and if Jimenez doesn't throw that ball away, then the Tigers win Game 1 by a score of 2-0 ... which, since the A's went 0-13 with RISP tells me it should have been a win.  And if the A's win Game 1, who knows what might have been different?    Who knows how different things would have been had Chavvy played third base in this series the way he did all year?

As regards next year, this should still be a damn good ball club.  You have to assume you'll get more from the entire infield - Swish, Ellis, Crosby and Chavvy.  (If you don't get much more from either Crosby or Chavvy, it's time to dump them, because enough is enough. )  You'd have to expect more from Bradley, too, in terms of his health and Harden, and perhaps Loaiza, too.  So there's reason to believe in improvement.  And though I should say too much, I really won't miss Zito that much.  (He's been a terrific pitcher here, but I can take only so many 0-2 counts that then go full.  Against lousy clubs he usually works out of it, though.)

Having said all of that, the Angels were pretty tough the second half, too, and you get the sense that they would have caught the A's had the season gone another week.  And they have made it clear they are going to re-load offensively, with a Miggy, an ARod, a Soriano ... or perhaps two of the above or something similar.  So this has been a hell of a ride the past 6 years, but I think even Moneyball's Michael Lewis thinks it's coming to an end.

Why do I say that?  Well, for one, the farm system really doesn't have anything in it.  Barton looks pretty good when healthy, but ... from what I read, that's pretty much it.  We got a sense of our depth in the infield when the A's replaced Ellis and Perez (Perez, for crying out loud) with, um, Jimenez and Kiger.  I think Boca boy is the top outfielder, and I certainly didn't see anything among the young arms that made you think "Wow, that's the next Harden, or Street, or Duke, or whatever."

So I'm calling here and now for some off-the-field changes to make 2007 more enjoyable:  (1) a healthy Roy Steele; (2) the end of dot racing and hide the ice cream in the hat; (3) a Vince Controneo that knows when and how to change the modulation of his voice; (4) the early retirement of Robert Buan; and, OK, on the field: (5) an Eric Chavez that you actually look forward to seeing at the plate in a clutch situation.

Gret season, AN!

Farm system not as bad as you think
The farm system had an insane amount of injuries this year, but there are some quality players down on the farm.  Don't assume the worst on this front.

Lurie
Of the few times I've listened to him this year, he's twice gone off on tirades about players getting  food poisoning and saying they need to hire a "food taster" to avoid this. Does the man not realize that food poisoning doesn't strike quick enough for a taster to give a warning to players to stay away from the eggs?

Perhaps he's usually better--this is just what I remember hearing from him this year.

Cotroneo
In addition to the need for him to change the modulation of his voice, I also hope he will learn two more things:
  1. when he gives commentary during Korach's play-by-play, to focus it on a particular point rather than rambling endlessly.
  2. to call the action as it happens, rather than anticipating it ahead of time (e.g., "and the throw is gonna be" ...pause... "late!").

by snowflake on Oct 14, 2006 11:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey now...
I agree somewhat that Vince needs to get settled in a bit more, but I really think that's all it is. His chemistry with Ken Korach as the season went on has been obvious and made for fun listening. Add in Ray Fosse when he's not busy with the tv broadcasts, and I've really enjoyed listening (which is how I partake of the majority of games each season) to the radio broadcasts this year. And I'm an inveterate and still disconsolate Bill King fan, who wasn't sure I'd be okay with listening to games without him there after all these years and memories. But I am. Life goes on, and Vince and Ken make a good team and are doing just fine. (Ok, that call in Game 3 of Kotsay's catch sprinting back to the wall was a bit much though, I'll give you that!)

Both of the things I mentioned
are things good announcers do. Cotroneo doesn't do them consistently, and hence hasn't convinced me that he is a good announcer or belongs in the job. I think it's quite possible he'll get better, but as it stands now his presence in the broadcasts leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm really proud of these A's
And am extremely happy that they made it as far as they did.

You have to go back to September 14th to find when the A's weren't the 5th best team in baseball based on their record. That means only 4 teams were better than us from the 15th on, 3 of which are still in the postseason, with one going to the World Series.

The fourth we swept three games straight, which was no small feat at all!

We saw Swisher emerge as a future top hitter, a future hall-of-famer in Frank Thomas, and a great bunch of pitchers and batters that made up such a fantastic team. If Frank Thomas believes that this is the most fun he's had reaching the postseason out of his career, that has to count for something.

That's not to say I'm not bummed at all by the loss (I wonder how many teams have swept in the ALDS only to be swept in the ALCS), and it sucks that Thomas and Swisher didn't produce, but I'm still pumped up for next season.

Harden will be back in full swing and mini-Harden (Haren) will bring his game up to the #2 pitcher he's shown he's capable of being, of that I'm sure. If we don't get Thomas back, there can be no doubt that we'll find some other slugger to fill his void. Chavez and Bradley will perform like they should have during the regular season (though Bradley did, more than less), and our young players will continue to be some of the best in the league.

And like Nico said, being here with everyone makes it much more palatable. Who else could I count on for endless trade speculation in the offseason.

Thanks AN for a great season.

Let's hear it for a great year.
They gave us lots of joy, and yes, maddening moments too.  This hurts, it hurts bad no doubt, but somehow the year will remain as one of the best I can remember partly because of overcoming the injuries, and partly because it came after the last two when we came up short in the division to the halos.  And there's no agonizing moments that I wake up  to in the middle of the night thinking "If Only _!".  Got beat.  Go get 'em next year.

I'm very proud of the A's, who never gave up despite , as Chavvy would say "lesser talent" and especially key injuries (ELLIS) at the least opportune moment.

I went over to Fenton's after the game and talked for a bit with Marty and Shooty. They agreed with me that it would be really great to have a downtown Oakland event to thank our team.

I agree, great season...
could've been even greater, but it is what it is.
My hat, too, is off to the Tigers because they really clicked on all cylinders and never let up. I hope they don't let up in the series and take the whole thing- they deserve it, and those fans in Detroit do too.
The only thing I'm not happy with right now, because all the other little things that went wrong in this series aren't worth getting upset about, is Macha leaving Street in to pitch to Ordonez. After those consecutive 2 out singles, and after giving Macha the equivalent of 2 innings work already, Street should've been told to have a seat and watch somebody else try and get the third out. Saarloos or Blanton, or even Gaudin, should've been warming up heading into that inning anyway and ready to come in if Street struggled. I'm not usually one of the "Fire Macha now!" crowd, but this decision stunk. Now our young closer, who'd obviously given whatever he had at that point, has to live with that walk-off shot being the final pitch he threw this season for the whole off-season. He pitched his heart out, he deserved better.
But none of that changes the great season they had, and I can't wait to see what 2007 brings! Go A's!!!

by still bills kingdom on Oct 14, 2006 6:58 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree, still bills kingdom--
It was actually after Monroe's single, on a hanging slider I thought he should have hit out, that I said "Street's out of gas". Done is done. There was no way he was going to make quality pitches after that.

Blanton and Saarloos are relatively mediocre pitchers, but a proactive manager understands that a mediocre pitcher is more likely to get an out than a very good pitcher when he's simply "done".

The big blunder, IMO, was using Calero for all of one hitter on a day where Duke was not available. But given where things were, I too would have opted for Blanton or Saarloos to try to get the last out. Street was simply out of gas; you have to react to that. Oh well.

yeah, I hate to rag on Macha
('cause he gets enough heat as it is!)
but that really bugged me, only because of the impact on Street. He's had some rough times this year as is, and I worry what effect this might have on him for next year... I keep thinking how Lidge hasn't looked the same since that shot Pujols hit off him last year in the NLCS, even though it didn't even cost his team the series or anything. This didn't cost the A's the series by any means, but it might cost Street a lot of confidence for next year that he'll have to rebuild.
Enough hindsight! I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in the off-season (can we get Mulder back cheap?! Do we want him?! What sickening amounts of money will the Angels and the Yanks spend on whom?!) and already ready for Spring Training and 2007!

Congrats to the Tigers, they clearly played better. Funny now how we talked of how teams might pitch around Frank Thomas. Damn not one hit. And how about the Jimenez at bat, Kid, it's the ALCS, you have to swing the bat. The Tigers played better on every level, the A's had plenty of opportunities and missed nearly every one. But it was another great season, Billy always gets a contender out there. I already can't wait to be sitting at the Phoenix Muni, sipping a beer and watching the 2007 A's get to work. That was a moving piece
and Bradley is a piece to keep building a championship team around, or at least a piece of the puzzle.
Some of my favorite moments this season came when I inadvertently called his shots, including the 3 run walk-off against Ryan, and his first one in Game 2 of the ALCS... I'm just sitting there muttering "c'mon Milton, just knock it out of there" and sure enough... (I'm not changing my name to Nostradamus anytime soon, it was just fun to say that and watch him step up and hit it out a couple times!)
I hope he stays in an A's uniform for many years to come, and I think we could use a couple more guys on this team that play with such obvious passion and determination. Lock him up to a 3 or 4 year, Billy...

I'm sure other folks here already
noticed this back when the schedule came out, but who the hell decided that the A's would fly to NY for a weekend series with the Mets, then double-back to go to Cleveland to play the Indians, and then...fly back to NY to play the Yankees the next weekend?

It gives me an excuse
To stay in NY for a whole week. I know it is pretty dumb to schedule it that way. It would be much smarter to have them play the Mets then go to the Yankees then fly to Cleveland, that cuts out 2 whole flights. But for me, I get to bookend my New York trip with A's games! That is pretty sweet!

The Angels' '06 for last two weeks
Remember how they had the lusury of those off days sandwiching that KC series in late September?  Now we get that.  I think part of the reason of the A's slide at the end of this season--despite resting guys--was the 17 straight with no off day.  The days off may help, although I liked the 7 Thursdays off in a row too.  Whatever keeps the pitching rotation in sync, will help.

Something that made me laugh
an old 'The Dugout' chatroom featuring the A's & being LOB

heh

as for the ALCS - well, for me it's all just hazy grey with flashes of green&gold....mostly just grey

in my heart & mind, i'm still sitting at McAfee on that overcast Friday afternoon donning a permanent 'kotsaypostinsidetheparker'type slaphappy grin - watching the fans filtering out of the coliseum, cheering & chanting...while also catching the live feed on the tiny TV above, of the boys poppin' the clubhouse champagne in utter elation

my friends got up & said "C'mon, we've gotta catch Bart" as they made their way up the steps...I shifted in my seat, looked out at the field and said "No - not yet. Give me a few more minutes --- because who know's when we'll get another chance to enjoy something like this?..."

& I'm so glad I did
Thank you A's

great season
the guys played their asses off and just hit a healthier team who also played good baseball. i'm so proud of this team and even though i know there's going to really feel the void left by this loss for about a month, i can look back on this season fondly.

Tigers
I don't dislike Kenny Rogers as much as I used to, and he was never in the Clemens-Schilling category.  I agree with BlameChannel53 about Todd Jones, but I have nothing against Pudge.

Placido Polanco bugs the heck out of me, with that stupid round Charlie Brown head of his.  I also dislike Brandon Inge, though I'm not sure why.

The rest of the team I like.  Congratulations, Tigers.  Beat the NL.

I don't know what to feel.
I just feel numb. Overloaded. Watching the game, I was so damn proud of our guys, I could feel my chest tightening in agonizing joy. I am so proud of all they've done, how far they've come.

But I can't believe there won't be baseball next week. I can't believe it's over, it doesn't feel 'over' yet. I don't think it'll sink in for a few days, not until the itch to see a game starts hitting, not until the talk of Barry leaving and roster changes really starts.

This team gave us one hell of a ride. Every year, I feel that I couldn't love any Oakland team more than the current roster, and this is no different. These guys brought everything to the field.

I owe a lot of apologies to Bradley, I didn't want the guy on the team but now I can't picture 2007 without him.

I still miss Hudson and Mulder, and I think I always will. Zito will be the same -- I think we'll feel his loss a lot next season, when we have our usual round of injuries. This man was a leader, he was a teacher to the young pitchers, and he was one HELL of an Oakland A. He'll always wear the green and gold in my mind.

It's going to be a long and cold offseason. But at least we have the comfort of a certain knowledge that most teams lack -- the springtime will be warm and wonderful in Oakland because we know that come next June, we'll once again be watching another crop of A's rise to the top.

We got to see an ALCS. We got to taste it after all these years. Now, it's time to get ready to meet another old friend... Mr. World Series. I think 2007 can't come fast enough.

...Fuck. Baseball, I already miss you.

Is something I don't even want to consider! I think the guy is officially bleeding Green and Gold! I guess it is true what they say about someone's trash being someone else's treasure. And Bradley has been one hell of a bright shiney gem for us! I feel like we are very fortunate to have him on our side! I adore the guy!

Kielty
I generally like Macha, appreciate that he's low key and obviously a smart guy (he's got an engineering degree), but as soon as he didn't let Kielty pinch hit for Scutaro I thought the A's were done. I realize that like Scutaro, Kielty also popped out at the beginning of the next inning but that was a different scenario, leading off the inning. Since the lefty had just been brought in, Detroit couldn't bring in a righty to turn Kielty around. Bases loaded, two outs, bottom of the 8th, left-handed pitcher, and Kielty was the best guy on the team to have up there. It didn't mean we would have won the series but Kielty has a great eye and has smoked lefties all year. It was just a missed opportunity. There's no way Scutaro is a better hitter than Kielty. At that stage in the game did it really matter whether Jimenez moved over to play shortstop?

Great season, many thrills but wished they got the series back to Oakland. I agreed with everyone's comments in the game thread that the Fox announcers (well not all of them) sounded idiotic talking about small ball. The A's only got two hits the day before, so how many runs can you "manufacture" if you only get two hits?

Locking up Bradley for at least 2008 and 2009 to prevent him from walking after next year looks awfully good now. Bradley should know that other general managers are so risk-averse his price on the open market may not be commensurate with his obvious talent.

by SA on Oct 14, 2006 7:54 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Normally I would agree, SA,
but I think Scutaro was literally un-pinch-hit-for-able (nice word, eh?), because I don't think Jimenez or Kiger were considered options at SS. In essence, the A's were forced to play without a back-up SS, meaning Macha's hands were tied in regards to Scutaro. I can't blame Macha for that one, much as I would like to have seen Kielty bat for Scutaro in that situation.

Macha's hands are always tied
He never does anything innovative, he never uses his bench.  Just look at what Leyland did, playing guys who have played very little all year and they killed us, but our reserves always sit the bench, all through the season, and the playoffs, then he is shocked when on some rare occasian he has to use some body and they don't produce.  I didn't understand why Blanton wasn't called into the game earlier.  The bottom line it was a helluva season, but all the problems which get overlooked playing the Mariners and TB are exposed when good pitching is faced every day in a playoff.  I just wish once before I die that Swisher takes a hint from watching Polanco and shortens his swing to hit solid line drives where they are pitched.  As a final thought, just how valuable is the Duke?  I love him dearly but he is not dependable for an entire season, is he really worth the cost?  He took up a spot on the roster and wasn't available for one inning.

by china bob on Oct 14, 2006 9:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's all fine in general, china bob,
but unless you wanted Kielty to try his hand at SS in the bottom of the 8th, I don't see faulting Ken Macha for this decision, this time.

I agree that the A's philosophy of playing a 21-man roster, even when everyone is healthy, is a pretty poor strategy. But in this ALCS, the A's were without either starting middle infielder and their set-up man, while their 3Bman played with a torn tendon and one of their starters made his 10th start of the season in Game 3, on 13 days' rest.

  3. We have the Big Hurt.

  5. We pick up some quality backup middle infielders and a fifth fitcher.

the revenge factor
Being an A's fan since my dad started taking me to the Oakland Coliseum in 1973 at the age of 4 I have concluded that:

1. (Almost) all the teams we defeated in the 70's during our awesome Playoff/World Series run have exacted revenge on us.
        A) The Dodgers and Reds of the late 80's got revenge on us for beating them in the 72 and 74 series.
        B) The Tigers got revenge on us this year for the 72 ALCS loss.
        C) We're even with Boston, Baltimore, Toronto, and Minnesota in that we've won and lost against each in the playoffs in the 70's, 80's and 90's, and 2000's.
        D) A's in four against Yankess in 2007 (we're due with them)!!
        E) As long as we don't meet the Giants or Mets in the 2000 World series we should be win the series and bring baseballs highest reward back home where it belongs in OAKLAND!!

a really good friend of mine
is the son of former ML outfielder Rupert Jones, perhaps the only player to be traded from one of the two teams that would play in that year's World Series to the other (he went from the Padres to the Tigers in 1984, when my pal was 2).  I was talking with him earlier and he was saying that his dad had just called and invited him to a World Series game in Detroit next weekend as the gueat of the Tigers, but he wasn't sure he wanted to go because he is a H-U-G-E A's fan and was mad that the Tigers had just jobbed us out of the playoffs so thoroughly.

He said that he had been to a 1984 WS game to watch his dad but was too young to have any memory of it... I told him he should go and enjoy it, why not?  It's not like you get to go to one of those every day.  He was saying he had tried on his father's WS ring when he was little but it was so large and heavy it slid right off his finger.

Anyway, sorry for the digression, I just thought that was a funny story, maybe cheer us up a little bit and humanize the whole experience some.

My first thought...
when Detroit beat the Yankees, was: well, now we know the season can't end with losing to the Yankees. Whatever else happens, we have done better than the Yankees. And the Red Sox. And the Angels. Of course I hoped to go to the Series and win it. But I will always have the vision of a sulking George Steinbrenner to get me through the winter.

At the beginning of the season I thought we had a decent chance to win at all, but if you had told me, Harden will miss almost all of the season and Crosby will miss a whole lot, I would have thought oh great 2005 all over again and pretty much given up. Add on top of that "Chavez will play most of the season in spite of injuries and have the worst season of his career" and I don't know what I would have thought, but it wouldn't have been "I'll be crushed if we don't get to the World Series".

Things to be happy about: Mark Ellis. Marco Scutaro. Milton Bradley. Nick Swisher. Frank Thomas. Justin Duchscherer.

And even Jason Kendall was pretty darn good this season.

And now: I can actually root for the Tigers next week. Good show guys. You stomped the Yankees, and you stomped the A's. Go stomp the NL champs. Best of luck, you deserve it.

So this is the end...
Wow, I didn't think that the A's would get swept, but here I am feeling like I did in 90 and 92 all over again.  Oh well, there is a lot of pain in sports.

The crazy thing is the new playoff format of eight teams has totally changed the predictability of the post season.  The Tigers looked like the weakest team in the AL coming in to the playoffs and NOBODY picked them to even get past the Yankees, let alone make the World Series in relatively easy fashion.  I'll always wonder why exactly it was that the A's couldn't stay hot after their sweep of Minnesota, who knows when we'll see them in the playoffs again?

Life in the gutter
Ouch.  Sucker-punched by fate/luck/God/destiny/Macha/RISP/DP balls.  But then again, it's not a complete wash if we learn from it.  It's all about learning things, and improving on it:
  1.  They won a series, and that's a pretty good thing.  It's been a good 15 years since we've done that.
  2.  Sometimes teams are teams of destiny, like the Red Sox in 2004, and it certainly seems that way with the Tigers.
  3.  Quick complaint: any comparing Kenny Rogers last night with Kenny Rogers vs. the Yankees in game three of the ALDS is a little ridiculous.  The Yankees have a $200 million dollar payroll.  Our backup catcher is apparently our best option off the bench.  Slight difference.
  4.  For this abysmal series, we had our backup infielder playing shortstop and our backup backup infielder starting at second.  That's not any sort of excuse, but it is reality.  Imagine ANY other team (including these Tigers) without their starting 4 and 6.  I tend to downplay the importance of Bobby (see below) and Ellis, but they are REALLY important to a team that relies on pinpoint defense to pull them through.  Props to Jiminez for stepping into an IMPOSSIBLE situation.  he made me groan too, but, damn, man, how unfair a situation is that to place him into?
  5.  We've got a good young nucleus and we will be back again.
  6.  I think, if nothing else, this postseason has given us a little confidence (getting past the Twins), and shown Chavy he doesn't necessarily have to stink the place up (he's had a few mildly decent games), and,
  7.  it's shown that Milton Bradley and Mark Kotsay are the gamers I thought they were, and,
  8.  that Rich Harden's a tough guy, and,
  9.  that Swisher still needs some major work (he looks lost up there--he looked the same way in August of 2005) and,
  10.  that Scutaro can bring it occasionally (which is probably more than can be said for Bobby Crosby, who would have offered no offense and probably booted a few at SS--forgive me, all, I'm a notorious BC hater), and,
  11. that Jay Payton and Jason Kendall are gamers as well, just not as much of gamers as Bradley and Kotsay.
I hoped that we could get the ball to Barry, and he could go out there and win one more for us, but we were not kind to Radke in his last game EVER, so I'll not ask for quarter or mercy, just that our boys go down swinging, which is what they did.  We're the frickin' A's, damnit, and we don't crawl before anyone.  We will return.

Oh, and,

12.  Fuck Kenny Rogers.  He was a punk when he pitched for Texas, and he's a punk now.  I'd as soon light my hair on fire and join a polka band as root for him to win a WS ring.

Good night Sweet Princes
Thanks to the A's for the fun (good and bad) this season. And thanks to all you here! Today the pain is a little less knowing others feel the same (not that I WANT you to feel pain!) but we'll overcome it in Spring Training!

All this afternoon, people at work kept telling me "sorry" for the A's losing, but I waved them off, saying they did better than I ever expected this season! I didn't get to watch the ALCS, only followed it sometimes on Gamday or AN, so I don't know if they really played hard, only to get beat. I just know that I so happy my last memory of the season was the awesome game I went to where we beat the Twins to get this far!

Can't wait to start all over again in '07! And now I can relax a little more :)

Let's face it
the A's didn't really start turning it on until Loaiza's drunk driving arrest.  So this one's for Loaiza...(holds up drink it takes a huge gulp)!!!

by the way
by the way xbhaskarx ... that is the best AN quote I've seen ("A's v Giants is kind of like the difference between going to see the Ramones and going to see the Bee Gees. A's fans will go see the Ramones." -BB 07/27/05).

You should check out the Billy Beane and Johnny Ramone interview that took place in the Oakland Coliseum and appeared in an issue of the fantastic A's friendly punk rock zine - "Chin Music". A gem.

Outstanding season
Thanks to a great bunch of players who left it all out on the field. Looking forward to next year, it seems that the A's have the talent they need to go far again, with the addition of starter to replace the departing lefty.

The A's real weakness is the organization. One thing that I learned from studying Detroit's success is the quality of their organization, from Dombrowski to Leyland to the coaches. They were the best-prepared team the A's faced all year, as their pitchers had every A's hitter dialed-in and their hitters had the book on every A's pitcher. The fact that none of them choked in the playoffs is a tribute to their organization.

I'd like the A's to have the kind of partnership between the manager and the GM that the Tigers have, and coaching of their caliber, especially for the batters. Macha and Perry are holding the A's back, and it's not clear that Beane is capable of relinquising enough control to the clubhouse to get it done. But we'll see, 2007 is just around the corner.

Somebody in the Oakland city government should give Milton Bradley the key to the city, he's a man among men.

The A's success should surprise no one. They're a much better team than people give them credit for. -- Joe Morgan

thank you A's
Thank you Oakland A's for this incredible season you've given us. The thrilling run to the division title and then finally getting the monkey off our back in the Division series. I believe even if we had executed as we had hoped, we would have sitll come short, and I'm willing to accept that this time around. Next year, the players who will be back will be hungrier and I still anticipate great things for the green and gold.

Also thanks for my second family known as A's Nation. This has been another banner year for us, and I don't think any other blog site even compares closely to ours. A's fans have long been accused of being so few in numbers, unable to fill
consistently our ballpark, to the point where we have to cheat by knocking off 10,000 of our seats. But we lack in numbers, we gain in having the MOST number of truly dedicated fans in baseball. I think this site speaks volumes to that. Thank you all for being such a fun part of all my summers.

Congratulations to the Tigers. A much well deserved AL representative and I hope you sweep your way to the title as well. I think your fans have deserved it.

I'm still so very very proud of our boys and will continue to where my A's jersey with pride. Here's to next year. Long live AN.

RIP, I doubt it
I'm sure no one's truly satisfied with this ending, so "resting" is not on the menu.  Like others, here, no doubt, sleeping was a difficult proposition for me last night.

I'm very disappointed my team didn't show up for this series, with few exceptions (MB for one).  It would've been nice if the real A's had played, to show the rest of the country how good they can be.

Don't know about the rest of you..
...but if I 'have no clue on how to hit Kenny Rogers', I bunt him until he drops - with lots of them down the first base line, so he has to cover first base.

End of season - lots of fun. AN has given me tons of entertainment and on the whole some good insights.

Thank you all.

Word Association:
A's beat by TIGERS Eye of the TIGER (Song by) SURVIVOR SURVIVOR tagline: OUTWIT, OUTPLAY, OUTLAST OUTWITTED by Jim Leyland and the Tigers scouts OUTPLAYED by the Tigers Offense (among other aspects) OUTLASTED by the Tigers Starting Pitchers (quality starts anyone?) A disappointing end to 2006 for sure, but now it's a fresh new view for 2007 and all the offseason speculation to go with it. LET'S GO OAK-LAND! ... LET'S GO FRE-MONT? ...

Why don't my posts show on separate lines?
It's always jumbled together in one paragraph even when I hit return and preview it.
