KNBR 1050 says Craigs coming to the A's.

Apparently the a's are getting Craig Wilson of the Pirates for Kirk Saarloose and prospects will be exchanged. Heard a little about it about 40 mins ago and had to go and confirm it, and well, KNBR confirmed it.

Personally I don't think this trade makes any sense unless we trade off Payton. He will be another Outfielder, and another DH, something that we don't need. And the pen takes a big hit losing Saarloose.

This will also put DJ into a platoon situation with Wilson which will stunt both Wilson and DJ's growth.

Gonna keep listening to KNBR, freaking Rose Bowl crap is taking up 99% of the air-time.

Wow...
Which is more supprising? That trade or KNBR breaking A's news!?

Rotoworld says nothing.

It really depends on the prospects though. But, there could be a very good chance of Payton going as well to Pittsburgh, if not at least to offset the salary.

Leme look at the Pirate's prospects.

one thing that should not be forgotten...
is that wilson can play catcher. last season macha wouldnt pinch hit melhuse for kendall becasue if melhuse got hurt after the switch no one would be able to take over at catcher. BUT it we get wilson that will not be a problem. so this trade would improve our offense in more than one way.

I like it
Saarloos is a spart part at this point and Wilson is a righty bat with a career 120 OPS+.

Zonis is right though, a lot depends on the prospects involved.

Pittsburgh's Top 10 Prospect List
since I don't think they have much outside of the top 10, lets look at BA's top 10 of theirs.
  1. Neil Walker, c
  2. Andrew McCutchen, of
  3. Tom Gorzelanny, lhp
  4. Paul Maholm, lhp
  5. Jose Bautista, 3b
  6. Nate McLouth, of
  7. Bryan Bullington, rhp
  8. John Van Benschoten, rhp

Guys' I would target on that list
Gorzelanny would be very nice. Lefty, good minor league stats. Should be in AAA next year. Insurance for Meyer and for Zito?

Maholm, another decent pitching prospect. LHP.

Bullington could be good.

Duffy looks nice.

Capps...

Pirates have good pitching prospects I guess... they just rush em too fast.

re
I think any prospect would be going in Pittsburgh's direction (or any swap of prospects would favor the Pirates).

This would be great for the A's if it happened. Wilson is a nice big bat.  Personally, I would cry over losing Saarloos, but whatchagonnado.  Swisher's D is too valuable to waste at first.  Payton has to be moved to open up a hole, but the DH has to arrive first.

Actually
I've always heard that Swish is better at first than at RF, at least that is what Wash says.

I like this trade so far.  Funny becuase Andeux suggested getting Wilson on another diary today.

Believe it or not (probably not), I even thought of mentioning Saarloos as someone we could offer - just because he seems to have more value as trade bait right now than he does as part of our team.

<Doffs hat!> Craigs resume looks great!
I have to wonder how well he & Kendall got along,
...if K recommended him to BB?
...if Kendall was training him to be a catcher when traded? I see he has about 10 games of at bats as a Catcher and can't help thinking what a plus that bat is at that position.

Going a step farther, (brainstorming now) if Kendall were to continue to train him he could start the season at DH and it would not interfere with that training at all.

CW is a slugger that can do OF corners, 1B, DH, C, or PH.

Regardless. We can move on from Frank now and give BB praises and glory yet once again.

Nice looking 25 man roster!

If true the A's mustve lost out on Thomas, not willing to pony up or maybe they werent pleased with his health.

Whats funny about Craig Wilson is that I remember awhile back in the early days of the offseason, AN had a discussion about Wilson, and almost everyone was in favor of getting him.

Hes got pretty good pop, but I agree Devyn, hes not better than DJ at DH, and is pretty crappy in the OF.

I like the line up flexibility (and the power)
I see he hits fast balls and has adjusted to breaking pitches. His power is consistent at home and on the road and vs the various styles of pitching.

I'm crossing my fingers he likes and adjusts to AL pitchers quickly.

I'm penciling the A's to go all the way.

I couldn't have been the only one
but right after the Loaiza signing I guessed that Beane might have decided to pass on all the FA hitters (or figured they weren't interested in the A's), and so signed a SP and intended to trade pitching for a hitter.  If the Wilson deal goes through, it looks like I actually guessed right!

Wilson...
Is a masher.  He's got serious power, a pretty good eye at the plate, and he whiffs a lot.  He brings almost nothing to the table defensively, although he can catch in an emergency.  He's best used as a DH.  29 years old, hit's lefties tremendously well, but has held his own against rh's at times...         And yeah, he's cheap...

They also have AN favorite Jack Wilson and a logjam at 1b/OF with Casey, Bay, Craig Wilson and Burnitz.  Other notables are Mike Gonzalez (who would be amazing if he were in this deal, I know, impossible), Joe Randa, Oliver Perez (who I think is an ace), and Kip Wells.

Well, not a bad trade...
If this is true, I would suspect the A's would keep Swish in RF, DJ at first, and use Wilson as the primary DH, as he has an iron glove.  That would be my plan...

Wilson's splits aren't as bad as I thought, he's managed to put up .803 ops vs righties the past three years.  Of course he's manhandled lefties(.413 OBP over three yrs).

Yeah, WIlson K's a lot.  But one things for sure- If it's a choice between 500 ab's of WIlson or Payton, I choose Wilson in a heartbeat.

Maybe they decided to wait until tomorrow to announce it because it got done late and the Rose Bowl is on. Until I see/hear more though, I am skeptical.

I think he is overhyped...
actually i think there are other more complete backs in college now, actually White might be a better pure running back of the two on USC, others would be Deangelo Williams of Memphis, Maurice Drew of UCLA, and Laurence Maroney of Minnesota. That being said Bush has more athleticism and upside than all of them. At the moment though he isn't even the best runner in tonights game, White is performing better and Young looks like he did in last years Rose Bowl running all over the place. And about all the ESPN coverage, I like USC and even i was fed up with all the coverage they were getting on ESPN before tonight, it will just be good we don't have to have that shoved down our throats anymore.

not a very good argument
sorry but that argument doesn't really work.  just because there have been other overhyped players that have turned out to be busts doesn't mean bush will be a bust, one can find anecdotal evidence to support anything.  is bush overhyped?  he's certainly heavily hyped.
as someone said, the last player to be overhyped by espn was lebron and that turned out okay.  sure he could turn out to be a bust, as could anyone who hasn't yet proven themselves at the professional level.  but i wouldn't bet against it.  this was just one game, maybe white and young outperformed him tonight and his mental error turned out to be quite costly, but a team would have to be crazy to not take bush with the first overall pick.

how is espn setting anyone up for failure, as you say?  there have been draft busts as long as there have been drafts.

Why did they call the timeout on the 2pt play?
With that timeout, Bush could've run to the middle of the field and got another 15-20 yards with a tick or two left and at least had a shot at a long field goal. That was bad coaching. Also, wasn't it a little late to start blitzing..come on I was waiting for that 3 quarters ago. And when you need 2 yards against the best D line in football and they know you need 2 yards, how about pitching it to the best playmaker to walk the earth and let him scamper for 2 yards. And when you get a chance to intercept a pass (right before the first of TEX comeback td's) catch the damn ball. I'm not gonna sleep tonight.

Hmmm....was this a false alarm?
I kind find anything on a Saarlos-Wilson trade anywhere else on the net.

I think its a false alarm
hot off the press http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06005/632897.stm
He also said he does not intend to trade Craig Wilson, even though Burnitz and Casey will start in right field and first base, Wilson's two positions, and even though Wilson could make $4 million or more next season. "Whether it's media or fans, everybody has to realize that, if we are going to get better, part of it is having better backups," Littlefield said. "Through ownership, we've been able to increase payroll, so you're going to have the opportunity to have quality backups. Craig brings things that we need. He has power, gets on base and has versatility in the field. To me, that piece makes a lot of sense for us."

I just took a closer look at Chris Duffy
Hes a hot little potato.  His OPS/3 last year, split between the Pirates and there AAA affiliate, was 473.  Compare that to.....

Mark Ellis our OPS/3 leader at        543
Another Youngster Dan Johnson     505
Eric Chavez                                  484
Mark Kotsay                                 465
Jason Kendal                                452

melhuse gone?
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/M/adam-melhuse.shtml

i know melhuse has some strange AN following, but the dude is 33 (doesn't that make him an old catcher as well?) and check out his avg obp and slg over the last three years with the a's: they have ALL declined every year.

why waste a roster spot on him?
didn't wilson back up kendall at catcher with the pirates?

i'd rather see ginter or any of about 7 pitchers (juan cruz, garcia, meyer, etc.) make the team.

Yes Craig has caught and I'm thinking
BB would have gotten Kendall's advice on such a move.

Craig Wilson A's Catcher?

Saves a roster spot doesn't it!

Im not the guy that was posting on th other forums. God, all i was doing was relaying what i heard, no need to bite my head off.

Devyn...
I don't think anyone is biting your head off. But, in order to maintain some sort of credibility, I'd steer clear of posting entire diaries based around what you think you might have heard someone else say. It was never mentioned on KNBR, unless you and the other guy over on Scout's boards are the only two who heard it. Drop a line in the link dump or something. Also, your diary title and heading were quite misleading. Just some friendly advice.

according to ESPN....
Craig Wilson is slated to be traded to the Indians.

I can't find it anywere
I think it is BS. It's not on rotoworld, mlbtraderumors, scout, or knbr. There's nothing from Rosenthal or Gammons. The rumor up and vanished like a fart in the wind. I also cant find anything about Wilson to the Indians on ESPN.

Only blurb I could find
from Ben Maller:

Craig Wilson appears to be out of the Pirates' plans. Wilson, 29, plays first and right field, and he is unlikely to be retained as a bench player with a salary in the range of $4 million, which is what he is expected to receive this month. "I really don't know what their plan is," Wilson said last night from his home in California. "I'm hoping to be part of it somewhere." Wilson is coming off a season in which two injuries to his left hand limited him to 59 games. The Pirates have made known their desire to trade him but are believed to have had difficulty generating interest because of his injuries. If Wilson is not dealt, the Pirates are on pace to finish close to their targeted payroll in the upper $40 million range once all players' contracts are completed. As a result, Burnitz's signing probably will be the team's last through free agency.

here the Wilson to the Indians from ESPN
http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/features/rumors?&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finside r.espn.go.com%2fmlb%2ffeatures%2frumors

just look for Craig Wilson his is in the Jan 4, Wed section.

If you dont have Insider (like me) all you can read is the title which clear states he is slated to go to the Indians.

Rotoworld
The Wilson rumor isn't on Rotoworld, but this one is:
http://www.rotoworld.com/includes/topblurbs.asp?sport=MLB

We get "prospects" for "player".  I thought it might be the same rumor that was floating around awhile back, but Boston Globe just published it today.

by saml314 on Jan 5, 2006 1:02 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Craig W could still be on...
From your Roto link
"From Oakland, the Red Sox would probably want Justin Duchscherer, although to get him, they'd likely have to throw in some additional talent. Jay Payton would be a great fit if only he didn't burn bridges with the team in July. It might be a pitcher like Joe Kennedy, Kirk Saarloos or Jairo"

This would serve to make room for Craig, Frank or other.

Unlike the rest of AN I don't see Sox having a problem taking JPay back. The only problem last time was playing time not chemistry or clubhouse cancer or any other imagined conditions.

That being said, if Kielty or Kotsay were the ones it wouldn't surprise me either.

Looks like Craig Wilson is unlikely unless this somehow ties in.

It's BS until then.

Anyone out there know what Craig w's hand
problems were?

They sound recurring; just speculating; ...Hamate?

by A s Eh on Jan 5, 2006 6:54 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Fractured left pinky in July.
Torn tissue in knuckle of left middle finger (leading to surgery) in May.  Sounds totally unrelated and merely flukey.

Here's the main quote:
(Littlefield) said he did not intend to trade Craig Wilson, even though Burnitz and Casey would start in right field and first base, Wilson's two positions, and even though Wilson could make $4 million or more next season.

"Whether it's media or fans, everybody has to realize that, if we are going to get better, part of it is having better backups," Littlefield said. "Through ownership, we've been able to increase payroll, so you're going to have the opportunity to have quality backups. Craig brings things that we need. This is the same Littlefield...
Who said he wouldn't NON-TENDER Josh Fogg, and guess what? Josh Fogg is a free agent. Right now his word means nothing, like the word of any GM.

One time a GM said "Carlos Peña is a big part of the future" and a couple of days later BUM... Peña was in his way to Detroit, I don't remember the GM's name but I think is Billy something...

More IF
Great defensive player in my opnion but I think you have to stick him somewhere permeatately and not have him rotate with DJ or 2B with ellis, have him take an OF spot.

I am sorry...
but are you talking about the same Craig Wilson.

First off he can never play 2nd base and why would we want him to when we got Scutaro and Perez to play backup.

Secondly Wilson is not a good defensive player. He has a career .988 FP.
