blech!

during this slow time of the year i was wondering whom everyone would vote for if they had to choose their all-time ugliest mlb player?  there is always a lot of recognition for the attractive fellows, how come the ugly guys never get any props!

so who would it be?

I loved it when
McGee, Hendu and Baines were all on the squad. McGee always looked miserably unhappy, Hendu joyously happy, and Baines like he couldn't care less one way or the other.

he had the best
batting stance to impersonate, hitting a hr in that stance was way more humiliating for the pitcher when we played baseball in the street

Randy Johnson
What's not to be afraid of?
  1. The mullet?
  2. The bad skin?
  3. The Popeye-style chin?
  4. The methamphetamine-addict looking weight?
  5. The overlong, alien-like limbs?
He has so many strike outs because batters are trying to get out of the box so they don't have too look at him anymore.

OK, random but ....
Bill James used to have fun picking the handsomest and ugliest players. In the first version of his Historical Abstract he had this article about a pitcher from the 50s named Don Mossi, apparently the all-time ugliest, and I must say the guy was pretty homely.  I just remember James' quote: "He looked like Joe Torre escaping from Devil's Island." Classic.

by bigelephant on Jan 17, 2006 10:51 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Don Mossi
This is what Bill James had to say about Don Mossi:

Dom Mossi had two careers, one as a reliever an one as a starter, and he was pretty darned good at both. No one who saw him play remembers that, because Mossi's ears looked as if they had been borrowed from a much larger species, and reattached without proper supervision. His nose was crooked, his eyes were in the wrong place... he looked like Gary Gaetti escaping from Devil's Island.

One of the problems with choosing the ugliest and handsomest players is that a player who looks short of grotesque in one pose or one photograph will look fine in another. Susie, [my wife], showed me a picture of Hoyt Wilhelm in which he looked positively handsome. I assured her it was just a bad shot.

You never had this problem with Don Mossi. Don Mossi was the complete five-tool ugly player. He could run ugly, hit ugly, throw ugly, field ugly, and ugly for power. He was ugly to all fields. He could ugly behind the runner as well as anybody, and you talk about pressure... man, you never saw a player who was uglier the in clutch.

Charlie Hough. When I was a kid, we had seats where you could look into the visitor's bench (right behind the photographers) and I just remember Charlie chain smoking in between innings, and it was really just disgusting. Seeing a 40 year old, junk ball pitcher, smoking 3-4 cigs between innings. And they say baseball players aren't athletes!

I'd have to agree w/Durden...
Randy Johnson... not a guy you'd wanna meet in a dark alley... or a well-lit alley for that matter. Part of the reason I was hoping the Yankees wouldn't make the playoffs was so that I wouldn't have to endure the sweaty FOX close-ups of the Big Unit. Or like Jon Lieber when he was in NY. My god.

Here's some more
Ugliest A's, right off the top of my head I'll go with Olmedo Saenz and Gil Heredia. I was going to say current A's player Juan Cruz, but once I got a closer look, I just couldn't bring myself to vote him in.

Non-A's players...I'll go with Rich Garces just because he is so morbidly obese.

Andy Etchebarren / Orioles catcher/ 60's-70's
The double jointed, amazon rain forest size, immense hairy eyebrows & the 24 o'clock shadow does the trick. If he doesn't win for scariest, he can win for hairiest. Don Mossi is right up there. There was supposed to be a player on the Mets named Danny Napoleon, who was a poster child for birth control. This leads to the worst vintage Topps baseball card set ever made. The 1968 set made every player look like crap. What was Topps thinking when they came up with the borders? On the other hand, the 52-67 sets are beautiful, and damn, I wish I never sold some of the complete sets I had. Oh well.
