Open Thread: AN Day Approaches

The tickets are all safely in your hands.  The guests are almost all lined up (I still have a couple possibilities that I'm working rigorously to try and secure).

I called the A's today to confirm that it was OK to create and hang signs from where we'll be sitting.  It turns out the A's don't have problem with signage.  Green N Gold Girl got the jump on everyone else with her "high socks" sign (see her diary).

I recommend getting there as early as possible.  The barbecue will only be available from 11 a.m. until the minute the national anthem starts.  Plus, you want to get an Eck jersey, don't you?  We'll also have our special guests showing up early and we'll be conducting a fun trivia contest to give away some prizes.

Two quick notes.  A special note of thanks to baseballgirl, who graciously agreed to make the name tags for the event which will ask you to fill in your real name and user name.

And finally, giambizombie, a regular here at AN and the guy who makes all the great AN apparel recently welcomed a new addition to his family this past weekend.  Yet, he's still going to be there this weekend at AN Day.  Talk about dedication!  Let me just say publicly, congrats to him and his wife on their new bouncing baby boy.  It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.  And now you'll know why he looks like a zombie come AN Day.

You can use this as an open thread for AN Day planning or any other pending issues, such as the biggest series of the A's year starting about 21 hours from now.

LET'S GO A'S!!!!!!!

AN day info for new AN citizen
HI:

Based on the thread, I am assuming AN day is today?  I'm new to the site.  HOw do you get info about festivities, seating, etc?  Are there more AN days?  How does one get involved?

by CC95060 on Aug 9, 2005 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

AN Day is Saturday
It's once a year (so far), and this is the second year. Essentially AN members will congregate in the BBQ Terrace of Saturday's game vs. the Twins to eat, greet and mingle.

Because of the number of people involved, Blez set this year's up months in advance. So you're obviously past deadline, but be ready next spring! :)

WOOOOO!
Go A's!!! Tomorrow may we reclaim our proper place in the standings!!!

I am sooooo not going to be able to sleep tonight. Tonight it's all about reconstructing my shrine with the proper feng shui, and cursing all the bad mojo that a certain Yankee fan recently brought into my life.

I hope everybody has fun at AN day; I'm wildly jealous. I'll be in Redding! Ugh.

I so cannot wait
How many of the photographers (well, ones that I know) will be there. I know melody will be there, but will Nimvee and Almost Reggie (I know your real name... just can't remember it right now!), and any other AN photographers be present?

If I get there at like before 10? 9:30-45ish... would that be sufficient? I've got nothing going on that day, so if anyone is like hanging out in the parking lot pre-game, that'd be cool.

Me!
I'll be at the game, but not as part of the AN Day festivities. I'd like to be there ridiculously early, too. I mean, the A's are my life, so it's not like anything else will be taking precedence. Granted, I haven't actually bought a ticket yet, but... that's a small matter.

Where is it? The parking lot?
Hi!  Sorry to jump in here, but I've never done this before.

Where is the event?  In the parking lot, right?  We had planned to show up at 1100 and look for it, driving around until we see it.  Is that the correct thing to do?

Thanks in advance.  Peace be with you.  Man am I excited about tonight!

Maybe we just get into the stadium at 1100 and go to the plaza.  We'll find out.

I can't wait to see who the special guests are...

Only ones I can guess are the obvious ones: Micheal Urban, Billy Beane and Dennis Eckersley.

I have a question about AN shirts
If I said I wanted one and paid giambizombie online, would he be able to bring one directly to me at the stadium? I'm kind of a horrible procrastinator and it's kind of too late now to order one and still receive it in time without paying outrageous postage fees [and still risk it not coming on time], but I'd like to have an AN shirt to get signed by everyone who's going this year. hey  - if you want me to bring a tee for you, you can just pay me there - just send an email to info at astropitch dot com and let me know what you want -
The A's probably wouldn't want me selling a bunch of shirts, so I doubt I can make it an open call for sales in the BBQ plaza (much as I wish i could).
I will be bringing in our fabulous giveaways and my fabulous 2.5 year old girl (wearing her girly tee like a dress).

Skyview Terrace Hospitality Suite

For groups of 25 to 100 people, the Skyview Terrace is the perfect place to entertain clients, reward employees or throw a great party for your family and friends - all amidst the luxury and privacy of a suite. A ballpark fare meal (hot dogs, sodas, popcorn, peanuts) served in your suite is included in the rental price. The Skyview Terrace is one big party suite that can accommodate up to 100 people. It is sold in increments of 25. The price per 25 is $1,000 (which includes 25 tickets, a set number of parking passes and a ballpark food package).

I've never been in a suite...

Anyway I thought Blez might like to know what one can get for $40/person.

by Athletica on Aug 9, 2005 10:40 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

When do the gates open?
If I understand correctly, gates will open two hours in advance (and in Saturday's case, that would be 11 a.m.). But tbe A's official site also mentioned gates could open earlier (like 2 1/2 hours, or 10:30 a.m.) on large attendance games (which apparently is likely) or special occasions (Eck Day).

Guess I'll show up at 10:30 regardless.

It seems like...
they open the parking lot gates whenever they feel like it.  We usually get there before 4:30 for 7:05 games (not even high attendance games), and the lot is always open.

The one time it wasn't open yet we told the folks we had to go to the box office (which we actually did) and they let us in.  We did, though, also have a prepaid parking lot ticket, which I think made the difference.

We will be there by 10:30 at the latest.  I'm hoping we can get into the lot for 10 a.m.  :)

Neyer has either sold out..
or he's not following the A's that closely.

1) said in response to a Piazza to A's as DH next year query, "sure, if he'd take a 90% paycut (accurate enough), and isn't Dan Johnson just as good a hitter right now?

yes, Rob, but you see.. Dan Johnson now plays 1B 90% of the time;

  1. said cano is still the choice for ROY when someone suggested the A's 3 headed monster. Gave it no thought-- just threw it out there.
  2. said the White Sox sweeping all the management awards (Guillen, Williams) would make sense to him. No credit for Macha?? Or Beane??
Part of me thinks he's goe so establishment that he knows he'll get in trouble if he shows his Moneyball/Beane flag too often-- so he overcorrects.

by oaktoon on Aug 9, 2005 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunately
I can definately see Cano stealing ROY from the A's - he's played quite good coming up as a rookie who never expected to be playing in the bigs this year, and is a part of the reason why the Yankees are 3.5 out of the wild card right now without any pitching.

He's right in between DJ and Swisher (in the order) in VORP (see here) and when saying who will win the award, not who necessarily deserves it, there is a Yankee bonus.

Something to note (taken from Baseball Prospectus):
VORPS:
Chacin:  30.8
Street:  25.8
DJ:      23.9
Blanton: 20.9
Cano:    15.2
Swisher: 12.7

And I think Ozzie could win over Macha for Manager - although Beane should be over the W.Sox GM.

What do you guys think?

I can understand if Guillen...
...gets manager of the year. The White Sox have been super (even though the A's have done very well against them) when just about everyone handed the Central to the Twins. So, Guillen or Macha -- I think you can't go wrong with either. Same thing with Williams or Beane.

Could be
If Huston finishes with 25 saves, and his ERA remains microscopic, hopefully he'll get it.

Can't go wrong with either Macha or Guillen as Manager of the Year.  The former helped engineer what's arguably the best in-season comeback in AL history, the latter took a perenially underachieveing franchise to the best record in the league.  They're certainly the only two that belong in the conversation.

A's fan in So Cal
Hello all ANers.  I'm new here & I couldn't be happier to find a place where i can share the love I have for the A's!!!  I'm seriously slacking at work because I can't get enough of reading what's on AN!  I live in So Cal (conserative Orange County), so i unfortunately live among the Red Sea.  I work with 4 Angels fanatics & love talking smack to them every day!!
I go to all the A's @ Angels games proudly wearing my gold & green & the last one I went to we won, but I was constantly reminded by Angels fans that we were still 7 games back.  Look at us now!!!  All I can say is...Go A's!!!!!!!

About Neyer's comment on Cano as ROY. I really think it was sarcasm. He got into it with some fans in a previous chat. One guy thought Cano would run away with the votes, and Neyer brought up Swisher and obp. Another guy pointed out that Cano's obp at the time was better. Neyer ended the argument by saying that he only meant that Cano was hardly a lock and that there were others to be considered.

Neyer can be very snarky in his answers, and with Cano's numbers dropping(he's definitely cooled down) and Swisher's numbers rising, I'm pretty sure there was plenty of sarcasm there.

When he's talked about reasons for the A's current run, he's mentioned Swisher's turn-around.

Man....Being here in So Cal
Got a couple of bad looks already from Angels fans when I was out earlier.

LA Times today has an article about the series..and of course points out "Moneyball" is 0-9 in playoff clinchign games no matter how hto their second haves have been.  Ugh, this crap drives me nuts.

I am fired up for the game, god I hate the Angels.

tonight's game
Ditto to that.  I don't know how long I'll be able to look at Lackey's mouth without cringing.  Why can't he just close his mouth? :)

by neesie on Aug 9, 2005 3:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

anyone who talks about
Moneyball without talking about last year's champs Red Sox cannot be taken seriously as an analyst. The '04 BoSox were the quintessential Moneyball-2002 team.  People who think the A's are the only ones who value OBP and SLG are just fancy versions of Gilbert Gottfried. Annoying, begging for attention and ultimately meaningless.

Man, every Angel is asked the same question
the last two days about how hot the A's are....They must be so sick about hearing about the A's...first couple innings should be big..cuz the Angels are going to fired up to end this talk.

God I hope the A's when the division.  I will not forget Mr. Know-it-all Joe McDonnell, when the A's were still 4 or 5 back, saying they had no chance and that they would fade.  Then he goes on to say that Beane builds teams to win 90 games but not to win World Series.  Huh?  How do you build a team to win 90 games but not to win the W.S.?  Isn't building a team to win 90 the same as building a team to win the W.S.?  What is the difference?  I would love to hear that jackass eat his words.  Besides, doesn't pitching win Worlds Series.  Havn't the A's had pitching?

Angels sure sound disheartened.
according to an ESPN article. Looks like they got their doubts, and that's just how I like em.

Can't wait to see you all there. Lets show these So. Cal Posers what real fans are like.

Checking In from Nova Scotia
This is my first post, but I've been lurking for a while now.  I must say I am pumped about this series, however living in Nova Scotia the only chance I get to see the A's is when Rogers Sportsnet picks up the game.  This week they are showing the titanic battle between Seattle and Minnesota.

I know my Canadian boy Rich will be dealing tonight, let's take first place once and for all.

PS I hope everyone has a blast at AN day, I'll get out there eventually.

Welcome
I'm in Ottawa. I have the Rogers super sports package which gets me MLB "extra innings" so I can see almost all of the A's games. The 10PM starts like tonight are rough but I guess it would be 11PM for you.

Nice to see
several lurkers and "high 2,000s-low 3,000s" users popping their heads above water for the first time to say "hi"--must be a big series--we're all impatient and anxious together...Bring it on, Hardy-Boy style!

I am waiting.
The game won't be on TV here until the Giants game is over. I hate that. So much waiting and anxiety and then... no A's until that game finishes. :(

The A's game will be on FSN Plus, no?
Whenever the Giants game ends, they'll carry it on FSNBA as well.

At least, that's what they did last week when the A's had a 5 pm PST start and the A's game started at 7.

Meanwhile, Brad Hennessy: 2 1/3 IP, 7 R.

Sabean will now sign him to a 4-year contract.

Let us not continue to debate how many Angels can be dashed on the head of a pin. Let's just get to it while the gettin' is good.

Guess what??? My sister spilled diet pepsi on the end of my poster. It was dripping wet. I hope it (a) doesn't get totally ruined and (b) it doesn't get stained.

I'm super sad. :(

I'm pleased to see
KC leading CLE 4-0 after 2 innings. Partly because I'd like to see Cleveland stay out of WC range and partly because KC is actually one of those teams I've never disliked--and actually quite liked back in the Quiz/Saberhagen/Leibrandt days. I feel bad for them and their (very loyal) fans; hope they have a good series against the Indians.

Cant wait to meet everyone!
I am usually quiet on here, I grovel in the shadows of those who know so much more than I...I just want to say Hi, and I cant wait to meet everyone on Saturday. I plan on showing up around 1015-1030, hopefully I can secure a jersey, but more importantly, I just want to wipe out as much Saags and hamburgers and possible.

Plus, my wife is pregnant with twins, and at her work its all Giants fans. I am not worried about second hand smoke or alcohol, she doesnt do either of those. I am worried about my children, happy in the womb, hearing nothing but talk about KNBR, Barroid, and Sabean. They should be hearing about Macha, Beane, and tales of the bleachers. Lou Seal should frighten them, while Stomper soothes them.

I also hope there is some shade so she doesnt get burned, she needs a nice spot in the shade so I can deliver her mounds of burgers. So no cheeseburgers, eh? Perhaps bringing in some cheese is in order? Hmmmm

Anyways, see everyone soon!!!
