RANT: Football coverage in August

I mean stop it allready! I DON'T CARE about preseason coverage, in fact, I hate it as much as I hate the stores that are already carrying CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS!!!!!!

Its bad enough that the Raiders are gonna screw up centerfield pretty soon, but I don't really care about a sport that has fewer than 20 games a year!!!!  I mean enough already!!!!

You don't care for football?

Actually I Like football...
In Autumn where it belongs...

After the leaves change...
When sweaters are appropriate...
When students are worrying about midterms...
When the Xmas decorations go up in Union Square...
When I still have Halloween candy lying around the house....
When Thanksgiving Turkey and Cranberries are available...
When Eggnog fills the stores....

AND....especially when I am smugly enjoying another winning season by the Green and Gold.

Otherwise its a rude interuption to the natural flow of life.  Summer is for kids throwing baseballs, and hot dogs and lemonade. NOT Rampant NFL moneymakers trying to pump up their already engorged coffers.

What's wrong with the NFL making money?
Isn't that what we want the A's to do so we can get a new stadium, better free agents, etc.?  I'm a big football fan too and I think any fan of the two sports would tell you that the NFL has done the best possible job in promoting and improving its product, hence its perch as the undisputed top sport.  The funny part is that baseball will go to number three, if it isn't already there, once NASCAR eclipses it.  Baseball needs to take a long look at how they manage the game.

I completely agree
I don't understand why I see more football coverage than baseball coverage and the season hasn't even started yet. I went into the breakroom for lunch and they had CNN on. It had the Sports Report on. Lets see today's top stories; Some football player lost his house in the hurricane, his family is safe though; The Saints have to play at SJSU for a few days because of the hurricane; Some Basketball team signed that Yo guy; And in Tennis, some chick beat out another chick into the next round. Ummm...hmmm... I thought it was baseball season! Where is all the baseball!? Don't get me wrong, I love sports and any other time of the year I would be all wrapped up in the other news stories, but it is Baseball season, not Football season! SHOW ME BASEBALL!!

Yeah!
I'm also a baseball/basketball guy.  In terms of playing the sport, those are the easiest to get a game going - football isn't hard to get a pick-up game going if you're gonna do touch-tag though.  But seriously, whats the fun in that?

Also, I am skeptical about a sport where one game makes up 1/16th of your season.  Thats like each game is more than 10 game win streak or losing streak in baseball.
I don't know about other fans, but I do my cheering during the game, not during the 6 off days, sometimes 12.  Theres only so much analysis you can do.  The off-field drama (can anyone say TO?) doesn't help with the sport's credibility either.

Football is a fun game to watch though, cuz its so freakin popular, that people can join in and say "OH DAMN, DID YOU SEE THAT HIT?" instead of more hard-core sports fans pouring baseball stats.  Thats what makes it popular - people who work 16 hour days, don't want to think about the sport, they just want to relax with a beer and have bbqs on sundays.  Its definetely easy to be a football fan in the US of A, violent fun, smack talk to fans of other teams (and with every game being televisied, all within two days, its pretty easy to get coverage of teams halfway around the country), testosterone all around.  I admit I have a blast gambling on the superbowl (that office stat sheet), the social events that each sunday brings.  But the sport itself?  Not for me.

I have to disagree
about the pick-up game argument.

baseball (at least for me) is tougher to get a game started. it requires alot of space. and unless you're playing stikeout or pickle, you need a bunch of people with mits.

by AllThingsOakland on Aug 31, 2005 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Football pickup games are hard just
with me.  Cuz my group usually includes a bunch of females and guys not too confident in their physical abilities.  They don't like the bang-bang plays of football so they're not usually willing to play.  Baseball however, doesn't take too much athleticism in their views, and its fun to swing a bat, and standing around, instead of running back and forth repetitively in a football game where only 1/10th of the time the play actually involves you.  And also having a diamond right next to us is useful, whereas football can be played anywhere with grass.

Yea, but things that are popular get covered.
Networks and newspapers, etc would be stupid to ignore things that are popular.

Haha...No way...
You think the NFL and Nascar are only popular cuz TV covers it?  They were both popular way before the recent TV boom for both.  Their popularity demands TV time....

In point of fact
Footbal would never have seen its rise in popularity WITHOUT television.  Football is a sport that lends itself better to television coverage, whereas baseball had been Americas Pasttime for 60 + years already

for me its..
football on sundays, basketball during the week, and hockey only during the playoffs.

Hockey is the worst sport on TV
I'd rather watch women's log rolling or the Dock Dogs long jump championship.

Football is a religion, almost as much as baseball for me.  Come next Sunday, i will have 5 tvs hooked up in my garage with 5 different games going.  21 weeks later, I'll come out of my cave looking like Tom Hanks in Castaway.

by RunRickeyRun on Aug 31, 2005 4:21 PM PDT reply actions

Dude, I agree completely.
I'm biased because I hate football. My parents dragged me to Raiders games a lot when they came back to Oakland, and I just couldn't take it, I'd sit there with my nose in a book the entire game. Had to go to way too many high school football games, too. Ugh.

I just don't think I could survive as a football fan, since I don't get the appeal of only 16 games in a season. Hell, 162 games is too short of a season in my mind, sixteen is in 'blink and you'll miss it territory'.

But I just HATE seeing SC and TV filled with football for 60% of the programming this time of year. It's freakin' preseason. Third-stringers. Whether or not T.O. would show up to camp before it happened should NOT have been news. I get that it's ridiculously popular, but damn. This is the BEST PART of the baseball season, and it kills me a little to see it run over every year about a season that hasn't even STARTED yet. I mean, seeing twenty minute discussions of fantasy football on ESPN gives me a 'WTF' feeling given how many AMAZING races are going on in baseball right now. At least wait til the damn season starts to COMPLETELY take over my TV, please.
