This is Glenn Dickey's latest article, and it contrasts the A's and Giants quite nicely. He talks about Keith Leippeman, who Dickey says has a big part in promotions, and talks about future A's prospects (including Kevin Melillo).
Dickey has said that the A's have told him that Barton won't be up in the bigs on Sept 1. I'm thinking they might promote him to AAA for the playoffs though.
I've posted this in the Bellhorn thread, but I will post it here as well. The Boston Herald is also reporting that the A's are "expected" to sign Bellhorn. I love the East Coast media.

A's eye Bellhorn
It looks like Mark Bellhorn is going to be back in the majors and part of a pennant race as early as tomorrow. Bellhorn, who was removed from the Sox' 40-man roster on Friday after refusing an outright assignment to Pawtucket, is expected to be signed by the Oakland Athletics after he clears release waivers tomorrow. . . .

SacBee has more "coverage"
Some nteresting notes:
This was the 15th time this year the A's faced a starter they hadn't faced before. Their record in those games is 7-8...The A's are 17-3 over their last 20 road games...Their starters have allowed three earned runs over their last five games (31 innings)...The A's have allowed four earned runs or fewer in 23 of their last 26 contests...Haren snapped a three-game losing streak. This was his first win since August 7...Kendall has been hit by a pitch 192 times in his career, tying him with Minnie Minoso for eighth place all-time...
comment on Blanton
Blanton had TWO awful performances in May. One was the infamous one in TB where he gave up 7 runs in a third of an inning. If you ignore that ONE stinkburger start, he has an ERA of 3.20, which would be 6th in the league. If you give him one more mulligan, and ignore his second stinkiest performance (again in May) of 9 ER in 3.2 IP against the Yankees, he has an ERA of 2.75, which would lead the league except for Halliday.
He's having a very good year for anyone, let alone a rookie.
Wow
*I meant sub 3.00
Pretty impressive, thanks for the post!
My weekly hornfans Huston quote:
lmao
Make it two.
"I would like to touch him."
"i wanna have his baby"
Both responses are from men.
wow, those people are nuts
Of course, I can relate.
Someone suggested
Count me in. We could get a VW van and travel around worshiping Street.
Don't you think that would scare Huston?
okay, now I'm definitely in.
We wouldn't get very far
And Sharon and TPE would have to ride on the back or something.
OH!!
We could each get one and have a little convoy across the country!
ahhhh!
oh my freaking god
By the way, the fact Sharon is posting means she is alive, which is a good thing...
I agree.
We could have little horns and play "Let's GO Oakland!" like in the commercial!
I'm picturing this like Forrest Gump running across America. Eventually thousands of golf cart riding A's fans would fall in line behind us to stalk "Macha". Television stations would do specials on us, and not just COPS this time.
Cause we gotta little ol' convoy,
Yeah we gotta little ol' convoy, ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on an' join our convoy, ain't nothin' gonna git in our way
We're gonna roll this truckin' convoy, cross the USA
Convoy... Convoy...
yes, I'm alive.
So in honor of New Orleans we should definitely have Huston Street Mardi GrA's. I get to flash Huston!
yes, that's it...
We'd have to skip some cities...
I wish our golf carts could fly...
Wonderful

"I've got to leave something on my face. I'm not that good looking. I just wanted to mix it up and see what happens. We're 1-0 with my bald head."
--A's outfielder Jay Payton, on leaving his beard after shaving his head to try and inspire the A's to win
Ken Rosenthal's article today...
The A's tidbit (sroll down):
"A's manager Ken Macha is resisting the temptation to drop catcher Jason Kendall out of the leadoff spot, even though Mark Ellis has a .367 on-base percentage to Kendall's .339. Macha values Kendall's experience and doesn't want to deflate the 10-year veteran in the middle of his first pennant race. Kendall is a .320 career hitter in September, his best average in any month. ..."

Jon Carroll's column today
quote:
"Currently on the front of the Wheaties box: Kirk Gibson. And not just any old Gibson -- the fist-pumping Gibson as he rounds first base after his game- winning home run off Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Gosh, thanks a lot."
funny.
Now Playing LF Barry Zito? Huston Street
When Bobby Kielty pinch hit for Kotsay in the seventh inning, the only healthy position player left on manager Ken Macha's bench was backup catcher Adam Melhuse.
"I was telling Wash (third base coach Ron Washington) to get loose," Macha joked. "I asked (Barry) Zito if he could play the outfield. He said he'd gun somebody out at the plate."
(Actually, closer Huston Street would have been Macha's choice if he another outfielder had gone down.) "He can shag 'em in the outfield," Macha said.
