Don't Phunk With My Heart

It's one game.  Only one game.  But tonight's game was absolutely, incredibly painful.  Make no mistake about it, I really don't like that team in red.  I hate losing to them pretty much more than any other team.

And tonight, every single break went the Halos' way.  From the strike out/wild pitch to Ellis botching what would normally be a routine double-play ball for him to the bare-handed Harden attempt at fielding a ball to Vlad dropping a ball and then throwing out Kielty at second.

And we discussed this already, but with an 0-2 count to Coolio, why would they pitch anywhere near the strike zone?  Harden got a pitch in the happy zone and boom, game over.  I'm still convinced that Harden couldn't grip the ball properly immediately after taking that ball off his bare hand.  I guess we'll have to wait and see what he says to our local beat reporters (as I mentioned in the game thread, I'll be avoid the national boys like the plague - Plaschke and Wilbon will be dying to talk about this one).

The top of the Angels order was the reason for the loss.  Figgins, Cabrera, Erstad and Guerrero went a combined 8 for 17 with six runs scored and nine runs driven in.

And interesting note.  How far has Rincon's stock fallen?  He's mop-up duty now with Yabu.

Tomorrow we've got Barry Zito going against Santana's Evil Ways.  Let's hope Z brings his A game.

cuz I look forward to baseball all night but now I don't want anything to do with baseball but as a result I have nothing else to do.  How depressing.

Rincon
is still well liked I think - it's just a sign of HOW GOOD our bullpen is.

Everyone else is on fire - and I don't recall him doing any evil either.  And Yabu hasn't pitched bad.  Beane's theory at the start of the year that we needed a great bullpen has come true - in spades.

I think it's mainly that the trade has turned out better than anyone hoped.

Wisasckicif and Kenneday have been very solid arms - and Rincon was never above Duke, Street, or Kiko.

or did I miss something
has Rincon done anything new or different or bad that he hasn't done the rest of the year?  Besides being very similar to Wisaskicif?

Are you F#$% high?!
Rincon sucks. He throws meat that's either outside the strike zone or MASHED. Any MLB scrapheap lefthander would be better than what we're getting out of Rincon.

See my reply
especially the "stats" that are specifically against right-handers - his job.  Or the stats that are specifically compared to league average when coming in with runners on base - they are available too.

why do we let him hit righties.  yabu coulda pitched to the righty then rincon for 2 lefties, then calero.  oh well the game was already over.

My boy?
I hate the Red Sox and Yankees. And the Embree better than Rincon argument isn't even worth having, but here's Embree's stats for the season: 7.44 ERA, .272 BAA, 1.35 WHIP. Funny, I'm jumping on the 'any scrap heap lefty is better than Rincon' argument yet.

Though, Rincon hasn't been much to write home about recently...

Ummmmmmmmmm
I always promise myself not to flame others on any board I am a registered member of...and this is the hardest I've found resisting since I've joined AN.

Sure - you may not like Rincon - he makes everone a bit nervous whenever he's out there - but he's clearly been a quite good LOOGIE this season.

For evidence: Right-handers are batting 0.205 against him.  That is excellent.

As Korach and Fosse have said, as well as many on these boards - he's scary because he used to only come in with the best right-handed hitters or best parts of the opposing lineup at bat, and usually with men on base - considering that's the role he's had, his actual numbers don't even do him justice.

Other people have less loud thoughts?

Given that Dee Wayne
used Embree as his comparing example, and given that Embree was 1-4, 7.46ERA before giving up a HR tonight, I don't think Mr. Dee Wayne is terribly high on the ol' credibility meter.

So in sum, yes Zakolantern, you ARE high--on the ol' credibility meter.  :-}

My whole point about Rincon
was to basically ask when was the last time he was used in a close game in a key situation.  As far as I can remember, it's been quite a while.  I just think the team is more reliant on Witasick, Duke, Calero and Street.  Even against lefties.

by Tyler Bleszinski on Aug 9, 2005 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Remember,
when BB acquired Calero and Cruz, he specifically touted their ability to get both righties and lefties out. Cruz bombed, hence Witasick--but this team was built not to rely on LOOGYs, more on "good pitchers".
Nico

by Nico on Aug 9, 2005 10:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But also on the same lines...
When was the last time the A's found themsleves in a true late-inning jam, with the pitcher on the mound struggling to get outs? I think the choice to use him today was more because he needed to get some time in, and also because he doesn't really have a problem going a few days in a row so it doesn't matter so much whether or not he's 'saved' for later. The three set-up men you've mentioned there have been so spot-on lately that they haven't really needed Rincon to bail them out. Rincon's still not that bad, even though no one seems to have any faith in him. If I remember correctly, he has, by far, the most number of holds in the entire bullpen.

Why We All Hate Rincon
Because over the years the one hitter Macha has ALWAYS brought him in to get out in a tense situation has been Garrett Anderson. And every time he hangs a slider or throws a poop-shooter and Garrett kills him.

Garrett career v. Rikky:

7-13, 3 2b, 1 hr, 9 RBI

No hate for Macha
But he has, prior to this year, relied way to much on the get Rincon out there vs. a lefty no matter what strategy, even if it is Garrett.

I will say, though, that one of the things that's great about this site is how differently all of us that love this team so much can see things. I literally cannot watch when Rincon comes in, but you guys think he's great. I gotta be with DeeWayne (and hopefully I can be as drunk as him soon) on this one.

I cringe when I see Rincon
Just have a bad history with the guy. Everytime I see him in person, he gives up lots of hits, lets inherited runners score, or walks the only guy he is supposed to face. This goes back to as long as we've had him, not just this season, but I still cringe when I see him warming up....
There's no crying in baseball!

by gigglingone on Aug 10, 2005 9:45 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I too cringe when I see Rincon warming up
I much prefer him in the mop up role.  It upsets me much less.  I have little or no faith in him, and I don't much care what the numbers say.  It's just how I feel. Yabu hasn't seen the light of day in weeks, could probably use a COUPLE of innings to stay in the swing of things, and yet last night and in KC, he comes in, has a good inning, and then they pull him for, who else?, Rincon.  Leading to poor results.

keeping with the stats
Witasick has been AMAZING against righties this season.  0.82 WHIP and .172 BAA in 25.2 Innings, across both teams.

Those are mindboggling good numbers.

If I read those and I was Macha...I'd use him too.

(And I assume you meant righties not lefties - since Rincon and Witasick are both better against righties not lefties)

a great stat
from http://sports.yahoo.com/mlbpa/players/5757/situational
Rincon has a 1.03 WHIP and a .171 BAA with RISP against him - again a big part of his job has been coming in with RISP, and he has CLEARLY excelled in that role since you asked me for stats.

by Zakolantern on Aug 9, 2005 10:41 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look at Rincon's ERA.
The dudes ERA is 5.02 with runners on, 5.91 with RISP, and 10.8 with RISP w/ 2 outs. Sorry to break this, but this is not good. Why you guys keep blowing his hoern is beyond (unless you're relatives). I would be less frusterated and the team would either function the same or better without him on the roster.

by DeeWayne on Aug 9, 2005 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In an effort
to continue to ignore your personal attacks and instead just reply civily:

All of the articles I have read from reputable stats sources (examples are www.baseballprospectus.com or www.hardballtimes.com ) one and all say that ERA is one of the least meaningful statistic for a pitcher.

And especially in this case.

Why?
Because the runners that are on base when a relief pitcher comes in will not count against his ERA.  So if you're looking at how good Rincon is at keeping inhereted runners from scoring, his RISP ERA is totally meaningless.

AN: PLEASE someone comment to make sure that what I just said was right - I'm feeling nervous about blanket statements after my foot-in-mouth about LOOGYs.

I think OPS against is the
best stat for middle relievers.

Rincon has a .762 OPS vs. lefties this year, which is about league average. He can do better.

that Vlad doesn't actually "slump" like normal human beings. He's just all around amazing.

Sometimes the young guys will play young and the vets aren't that much better. Tomorrow's game is one that (on paper) the A's should win: Zito against their rookie Santana. Unfortunately, this rookie is much more stellar at night, so hopefully the A's make him work tomorrow.

correct me if I am wrong
but didn't the A's lose the first game in Redondo Beach the last time they played them and came out winning 2 of 3.?
The only mistake the A's will make is if they start Blanton over Sarloos in game 3, give the guys an extra days rest, it is still a long season.
Tonight was a wake up call, the players have been reading too much about how good they are, needed a nice sound trouncing, good for the soul.

Agreed
I'll only worry if the A's get swept in this series... at home to the OC Angels.  Any other series result means that there is only one game separating the two teams, which is no big deal at this point in the season.  It's not like the end of last season... yet.

The Angels were better Tuesday night.  They got all the breaks.  That's fine; just reload and go back at it the next day as if the loss never happened.  This will prove as much about the A's as anything else they've been through in 2005.

by crosis on Aug 10, 2005 11:59 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look at 3 key plays:
  1. Ellis' error
  2. Harden bobbling squeeze bunt
  3. Harden trying to barehand comebacker
What they all have in common is that the player was trying to do too much. Classic "young team" stuff. It's easy to forget how young this team is, because they've played so well. But tonight was a veteran team against a young team, and it showed big time.

The breaks didn't go our way, but we were thoroughly outclassed--maybe a good thing for a team that might have been getting cocky (and who could blame them).

Nothing a little Zito and Blanton, and a deep, rested bullpen can't solve. The A's are in great shape, with an important reminder in the bank all for the price of one loss: it ain't gonna come as easy as it might have seemed the last 2 months.

i was at the game
and it seemed clear to me that the A's were very over-anxious in this game; Ellis is usually a machine at 2nd, and Harden (in sfgate today) said as much about the squeeze bunt - "We practice that all the time, but i guess i was too anxious" (sic)

I felt the same way as Blez on Vlad's 4th pitch in the 2nd; "Throw him junk!" i screamed. That he got a pitch to hit (albeit he hits almost anything) really shocked me.

I think a lot of air just left the park at that point, I've never seen the Coliseum go into such a state of shock. Nobody's seen Harden do that, nobody, it was truly baffling.

Go get em today boys, its another day, and the series is still yours for the taking!

I don't mind blowout losses
as much as I hate losing in the late innings or by one run. Games like this are probably a blow to morale though, considering how they haven't lost this badly in forever. But I don't feel so bad because I think this team will be able to move on. And like the saying goes - it still only counts as a game. We'll just have to try again tomorrow.

Sorry for the derail [I'm good at this] but I'm really making the "I visited AthleticsNation..." shirt for Mychael Urban, but does anyone know what size I shirt I should get? Because I have absolutely no clue how men's shirts are sized and I'd like to not be completely off base. I know Urban's a big guy though, if I remember correctly he's either 6'4 or 6'6 [and a lefty too].

by Melody on Aug 9, 2005 10:29 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't worry about morale--
ballplayers have much shorter memories than fans do (they have to). Compare this loss to the Angels' loss when Hatty beat K-Rod and it's night-and-day. I still love that game!

by Nico on Aug 9, 2005 10:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This was a "money" game
and we got too nervous. Hatty was asked once how it is that he bats so well in "clutch" situations, and he said that he just focuses on how the pitcher is probably even more nervous than he is.

The A's have to adopt that attitude from this loss. They have to remind themselves that they have a kick-ass team and that the loss came from getting psyched out. They can't dwell on the fact that their #1 starter pitched like Brett Tomko.

It gives you a glimpse

Good teams ' Rise to the occaison"
And the Angels did that tonight, as the Yankees used to do in the playoffs.  That comes only with experience, and a rookie team can't fake that.

The A's have benefitted to a great degree from teams that just didn't take them seriously over the last two months.  The Angels knew better.

Fortunately...
...the next two games are "money" games. And Zito, although 27, has been around the block a few times. FITZ tonight, Barry!

Sometimes, at least in the regular season, I think too much is made out of the result of the opening games of big series, forgetting that the next two games can change everything. The A's, as with any good team, can have a klunker at any time -- and unfairly or not, they're magnified when the game is against a division rival you're trying to take down.

I'd rather analyze whether or not these A's aren't ready for prime time until after the series ends.

Macha's probably saying to Rincon:
Throw a few outings where you don't give up a run, and I'll put you back in non-mop-up situations.  Rincon hasn't shown that recently.

by Checkswing HR on Aug 9, 2005 10:36 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

In fact,
I think Rincon got the call strictly because he's the most under-worked the last week and needed to throw. But given Kennedy's recent outings, and how long Rincon has struggled now, I wouldn't be surprised if JK got the call in a 6th or maybe 7th inning LOOGY assignment. I'd still bet on Rincon in the 8th, though, as JK is generally there to face more than one hitter.

Interesting Opinion
But I think Macha is trying to use Kennedy more the long-reliever when he cares about the game too much to use Yabu.

Kennedy was warming (according to the radio) in the second inning for if Macha decided to yank Harden (good thing he left him in).

An amazing thing about our bullpen: We have THREE people who would be great as a LOOGY - most teams barely have one.

Frankly,
I was confused by Kennedy being up in the 2nd instead of Yabu. Not sure exactly what Yabu's role is, other than to reside in Joe Blanton's stomach. If Kennedy had thrown 3-4 innings, he'd be spent for the series--why would that be preferable than spending Yabu. Just the fact that JK is a lefty who gets lefties out seems like enough reason to want him available Wed-Thurs over Yabu.
Nico

by Nico on Aug 9, 2005 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
and see my comment below where I actually looked at if Kennedy could be a LOOGY and then said it didn't look it.

I don't understand the difference between in Macha's mind between Yabu and Kennedy - Kennedy has looked great since joining the A's, but that is too small a sample size for any stats I could quote to mean anything - in general, I personally find them pretty interchanable - the "long relief guy"

LOOGYs? Versus Righties
Our left-handed relief for the season:

Witasick: 0.82 WHIP .176 BAA - unreal

Rincon: 1.32 WHIP, .205 BAA - quite good

Kennedy: 1.90 WHIP, .332 BAA - LOUSY numbers, but partly compiled at Coors where he was pitching horridly.

My opinion: obviously Nico and I were mistaken on paper at least - Kennedy doesn't look like Loogy material.  The other two are both quite good at the role.

I'm confused
  1. Witakick is a right handed pitcher. He's not a loogy
  2. These are LOOGY stats vs. righties? and if so
2b) Rincon was awful vs. righties last year, so any positive #'s vs. righties might be an anomoly

Yeah
I was confused.  But Macha's always leaned heavy on L-L, R-R matchups.  In recent games, he's snubbed Rincon in favor of Witasick or Calero.  In season's before, Rincon would've always been out there against a tough lefty.

Career
Rincon has been quite good against lefties (I am not going to use the LOOGY term again tonight):

For example last year:
vs lefties:
.200 BAA
.92 WHIP

Career vs lefties:
.208 BAA
1.02 WHIP

So this year could be argued to be the exception.

It's only one game
Everyone take a deep breath and count to ten. I think Harden learned an important lesson from this game. It doesn't help to get angry. Once the game was out of reach and he settled down, low and behold he put together four solid innings. Too bad it was too late.

And struck out nine!
Chances are, if you didn't hear anything about the final score or the rest of Harden's line -- only hearing that Harden struck out nine -- most would figure the A's probably won.

I think the effects of that comebacker on his hand -- if any -- were minor and temporary.

More breaks
The Crosby and Swisher near home runs could have gone our way and changed the game.

Regarding Rincon, do we know if Beane shopped him around at the deadline?  He's a free agent so a deal would have made sense unless Beane wants to save him and get the draft pick(s) at the end of the season.  Draft picks are great, but we all know how that worked out as far as Dotel and Durazo go though.

Tough loss, indeed
Normally, blowouts don't bother me as much as close losses, but in this case, it stings.

Why?

Because Harden DID NOT PITCH POORLY. His only real mistake was the Vlad homer (of course), but if you look at his peripherals, he pitched very well! 9 K's in 6 innings. SHUT DOWN the Angels after 2. And the homer? He never should have been pitching to Vlad in that particular situation. How many things had the go wrong to set up that matchup?

In the first two innings, Harden and the A's were the victims (as they often are in big games) of the most atrocious luck imaginable. In the first, if Ellis turns 2, the Angels very likely score 1 and that's all. In the second, without the wild pitch on the K, the inning likely looks like this:

  • Finley K's (1 out)
  • Kennedy singles
  • Figgins flies out (2 outs)
  • And then you have the Cabrera play, the error, which allowed Finley to score. If Finley isn't on 3rd to begin with, perhaps the play is made, or at worst, no run is scored on the error.
  • Erstad may never come up ... as a result, Vlad may never come up, or if he does, it isn't with the bases loaded and 1 out, already down 3-0.
A baseball game is always filled with what-if's, and I know you can't just erase bad plays. Perhaps our guys were nervous ... I don't know. My point is that Harden pitched well, giving up bloop singles (even Figgins' hit was a bloop double), and a homer that never should have happened. 9 K's says it all to me.

That's why this hurts. Harden didn't get "shelled." The Angels didn't bury the A's with "small ball." One or two errors, unlucky plays, gave away the game, put Vlad in the position to blow it open, and he did.

This all being said, Lackey pitched so well that we may not have won even if Harden only gave up 1 or 2 runs. That's the only consolation I can take from this game.

I know it sounds like sour grapes, but when you watch every game this carefully, every play becomes magnified. A loss is never just a loss.

by Crosbino on Aug 9, 2005 11:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, except:
The Angels forced mistakes (e.g., the bunt forced a hurried play) and the A's consistently "over" played. The bad breaks were there, but what defined the first two innings was Ellis trying to get two outs before getting one, Harden rushing to make a play at home and never catching the ball, and Harden interfering with what would have been a routine inning-ending DP ball.

The A's are quick learners, so one "youth-related" loss worth a valuable education = not a horrible night, really.

Nico

by Nico on Aug 9, 2005 11:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, Nico
The A's screwed up a few times and it cost them big time. The Small Ball stuff? I don't know ... the mistakes led the the opportunities for squeeze bunts and the like. We opened the floodgates for them.

I know you can't take the bad plays away, and you have to give the Angels credit ... I just don't want to see us get bashed on ESPN for getting killed. We didn't play that poorly. It just didn't go our way.

You must admit, though, those kind of "freak" plays have become a hallmark of this team in big games. Let's hope we break that habit.

by Crosbino on Aug 9, 2005 11:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I wouldn't
quite say the A's "didn't play badly"--I'd say they played pretty badly (at least for 2 innings) and that's ok. We can play badly for 2 innings every two months, no matter against whom, and I'll be happy.

And Harden didn't pitch badly, but he fielded really badly, and as luck would have it, that affected us as much as bad pitches would have.

Nico

But did the Angels make a statement tonight? I think they did, even if the A's helped dictate that statement. It will be interesting to see how the team responds tommorrow.

Harden did just about everything wrong
in the second inning:
  1. WP
  2. E
  3. Slammer
The only thing he didn't do (to avoid the pitcher's cycle from hell) was walk a run in.  He looked like an absolute rookie out there (the barehanded fielding attempt was the most exasperating moment, even though it wasn't technically an error).
Maybe it's good for Harden to fail in this acid test of a game.  He hasn't pitched in a lot of big games, so maybe this experience will toughen (harden?) him up a bit.

No
Harden didn't get "hammered." Bad luck, bad breaks compounded on themselves, leading to, yes, a home run.

If Harden was getting "hammered," Macha would have pulled him after 2. His stuff was okay, and once the crazy plays stopped, Harden dominated again.

Again, just sayin ...

I know we can't change it.

the game was over when Ellis botched the dp in the first - we all knew it.  The bitching about Rincon in this game is pointless as it was way out of hand by then.  In fact, everybody should be happy that he was in for mop-up time, even if Nico was correct in saying that he needed the work.

Harden has been more than good enough to grant a mulligan for tonight, although his 0-2 efforts are a little stubborn.  Turn the tables tomorrow, scratch one out on Thursday and move on.  If the playoffs started tomorrow the A's would be in - as long as we can say that everything is fine.

Tonights game
Really hurt from the start. They came out and look flat-out awful the first two innings. But you just knew it was because they were so amped up.

Its just depressing to see them come out before such a big crowd and put up that kind of performance.

This one loss doesn't mean much, but the A's have to come out tomorrow and show that they can recover from it.

Its true that getting swept wouldn't drop them out of the race--we know they theoretically could make up three games---but what would it do for their morale?

about the attendance. 41,000 on a Tuesday night! Granted, it's a showdown versus a division leader in the middle of a pennant race, but if this is an indicator of attendance long-term, if we can get attendance up from 27k per game to, say, 32k per game, then -- dare I hope? -- maybe we'll have a Slegna-sized payroll one day.

Well I was there.
I have to say the crowd was definitely in it. The A's however, semmed to be sleepwalking. I don't know quite what it was but the whole crew seemed a little lethargic. Why didn't Dan dive for that grounder at first? Why did Harden try to bare hand that ball WITH HIS PITCHING HAND?

Once again, it was Chavy providing the few sparks. Hopefully he had something to say to the gang in the locker room. That game was embarassing. I came home to find out FSN had broadcast it in all its gory detail in HD. Yikes.

Sure, a couple of balls almost went out by a few inches. And sure, the Angels appeared to be getting all the breaks. But damn. I hope my 2/3 prediction for the series outcome still holds up.

The perils of youth
This was a disappointing loss, but I didn't find it too painful.  It was over quickly, so I didn't need to agonize.

Harden was simply too amped up early, the defense was poor, Vlad was Vlad, and we weren't hitting anyway.

The Angels did what they can do - put pressure on the defense with their speed, deliver the knockout blow with their superstar, and get excellent pitching.  They're a veteran team, and it showed tonight.

Unless the A's are swept, I think they will be fine.  The team probably needed a reminder that they need to mind their Ps and Qs.

BOBBLE BALL.

It was not a pretty sight tonight.

Ellis bobbles a ball, a sure double-play.

Harding bobbles a play at the plate.

Not a pretty sight.

The boys in green 'n gold did not look like golden boys, but they sure looked a little green.

Harding was throwing hard. Except for the grand salami, not very many of his pitches were hit all that hard.

The game just seemed to bobble along, lots of red crossing the plate; not my favorite all-time game, that's for sure.

I think the day game crowd, generally speaking, seems to be more into the game than the night game crowd. It's just an observation; one that annoyed me like around the fourth inning.

Most of these so-called fans seem more concerned about getting their hot dogs and beers than they are about watching the actual game.  From where I sat, most of them just sat there, stuffing their faces, chewing the fat, figuratively and literally.

Blah blah blah, gulp gulp gulp, burp, burp, burp ...

Hey, there's a game going on down there on the field!

But no, everybody's either blabbering or adding more blubber.

Okay, Wednesday is Zito. The Halos don't have a prayer.

Especially if Hatteberg is back.

Maybe Kotsay, too? (Let's all bow our heads and pray.)

Time to kickass, A's.

And the ass I want you to kick is Angelic.

Win BIG!

1st in the alphabet and 1st in the AL West. Yeah, we're talkin' A's.

That's it!
Tony Harding was hired by the Angels to whack Rich Harden in the kneecap and take over on the mound! Unfortunately for her, she only found a whiffle bat, so the recovery time was two innings. Then Harden went back out there and did his thing, albeit with the Angels already up seven. :P

no big deal
every ball bounced their way.  a few more inches here and there and the a's score five runs on three home runs.  i can't believe our pitchers struck out thirteen and only walked two.

i saw a guy with an AN shirt at the game, i didn't say anything because last time i did it was someone who barely even knew what AN was.

Clearly
Don't forget that this team is still young and coul have been a bit nervous, Ellis's error from the higlights I saw was a very playable ball. Harden had to be very shaky since he has never pitched in such a big situation. But hey I'm rallying the troops for tomorrow for double play wendsday and I'll be cheering hard, good night guys.

Defeats
in which your mistakes led directly to defeat as opposed to being plain beat by your opponent are good learning experiences you can quickly build on.  Harden will be a stronger pitcher in crunch time because of today.  I will happily accept a nightmarish regular season game if our man Harden grows as a pitcher through the course of the game.  I think I saw that today with how he closed LAA out.  I will however, retract any positive comments I made in this post if I see Harden pickup another grounder barehanded or throw a hittable 0-2 pitch to Vlad.

I for one am not worried
OK, so we lost 9-2, of course It bothered me.  However we cannot forget that we're still up several games in the Wild Card.  Of course to win the West is the goal, but sometimes I wonder if the Wild Card is the better option.  I kinda like the ChiSox in the first round.  They have just as many inexperienced players in terms of playoffs as we do, and a 7-2 record against them has got to count for something.
Blez is right about the fact that certain media people are going to soak this game up and run their mouths.  It was just one game.  That's it, one game!
I'd rather have lost this way than to see Street/bullpen blow a late lead.
I think we needed a game like this.  A game where we played our worst baseball in several months.  Tonight (thank God on ESPN) we'll see what this team is made of.  I think we'll bounce back tonight.  The hitters need to make Santana work, unlike the last time they faced him.
Let the anti-A's media people bask in their glory for this one day.  For as quickly they will open their mouths, Z can close them after tonight!
Remember everyone...it was just ONE game!
Everyone should want Larry Davis as their boss...there would never be a timetable on anything.

So...
...Yeah, most of the breaks went against us last night, but you've gotta give Lackey credit -- he pitched a gem and has arguably been Anaheim's best pitcher this season.  He has also been absolutely lights out since the AS Break, so it's not like we lost to their 4th or 5th starter.  He got ahead in the count, was aggressive, and had all of his pitches working.

Harden didn't let the Vlad slam faze him and came back strong with four shutout innings.  Shows how quickly he has matured right before our eyes.

We have Zito out there tonight so I feel extremely confident we'll force a rubber game Wednesday afternoon.  Hopefully the breaks will go our way the rest of the series and I look forward to us being in sole possession of first place when we welcome the Twinkies to town on Friday.

Let's put on a show for the nation tonight and show em who's the best out West.

As they say, payback's a bitch.  Win big boys, win big.

Inconsistent is an understatement...
It varies from team to team, inning to inning, batter to batter... It's driving me insane!!!
I would also like to comment on the the umpires themselves. A lot of them seem to be severely overweight & moldy oldies... Does anyone agree that umpires should at least be semi-fit & no older than 50 or so?

& a few questions... Who holds these umps accountable for their mistakes? Does it just not matter how many blown calls they make? Are they regularly tested for the ability to make correct calls? If they are tested on a consistent basis, then that's where the problem is... The test must be very easy to pass because the umps just plain suck. They suck so bad that I was shocked when Michael Young was called OUT on that Kendall play. I expected the ump to blow it.

I don't think age and weight
are a factor. Jim Wolf pisses me off sometimes just as much as Bruce Froemming.

I don't want to sound like Ron Gardenhire or Larry Bowa, but some of the umps seem like they are just looking for a reason to toss people.

Again, I'm not just talking about calls for or against the A's.

A little note about Bruce Froemming umpiring Saturday's KC game. Not ONCE did he wipe off home plate. Even after Swish completely covered the dish sliding home, he didn't brush it off. John Buck had to kick the dirt off half-assed with his cleats. I don't know if this is my OCD kicking in or what, but isn't being able to see important?

by Jennifer on Aug 10, 2005 8:52 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to disagree...
I think age IS a factor because let's face it, things start to go as we get old (eye sight, hearing, energy, reaction time, etc.). Weight also does because you can't move around as well if you're obese, lack of energy, & plain old laziness.

I'm sure that certain umps DO look for trouble. It must make them feel important & powerful to toss someone.

I have to admit, I also get a bit compulsive about a clean plate. It is... well... It SHOULD BE important to keep it clean.

Scott Hatteberg is my hero!

It's only ONE game!!
Although an important one, but it doesn't end the season. Even if the A's lose the series (god forbid) it doesn't mean they're done. They need to learn from last night's debacle, especially the rookies.

About last night's game: besides the errors on the A's part, I don't think the ump calling looking strike-outs on the A's helped either. Suddenly they were out of their game because they couldn't take pitches and wear down Lackey. Instead the ump was calling all this crap strikes so they had to start swinging. Offensively I thought the UMP helped to take the A's out of their game.

I'm less concerned with the 9 than the 2
Regardless of the slam, the O still was anemic. Looked like DJ and Swish were pressing; everybody was tight.

Regardless of how good our pitching may be, we can't assume that 2 runs will ever beat the other team.

by kimnjerry on Aug 10, 2005 8:44 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The "O"
I actually thought it was okay. A couple inches here and there and the A's would have had two HR (both balls were hit hard), and they actually hit the ball pretty hard all night. Lackey's not going to walk people, so no help there anyway.

You take away the first two innings, and the A's didn't play that poorly. Of course, you can't just do that---but they ARE a young team, they were over-amped. Zito will calm them tonight---let Ervin Santana make young pitcher mistakes.

Potpourri
Last night was just one game and I won't make too much of it. Don't forget that Harden is just a kid and as such, subject to succumbing to pressure as he did last night. He will learn from this and probably be lights out in his next high pressure situation.

There is still nearly a third of the season to go. So even losing two out of three here, putting us but one game back, is not the worst thing in the world. Even being swept would hardly eliminate the A's from fighting for the division--but it obviously would hurt.

I started a diary saying that the Indians had the best chance for the wildcard because they played 40% of their remaining games--20 games--vs the two worst teams in the league: KC and Tampa. And last night underscored why Cleveland was in the driver's seat. Going into the 9th inning, KC was ahead by five runs and Cleveland scored 11! KC contributed three errors in the inning and had two out when still ahead 7-4. I think KC is the worst team (even poorer than Detriot of two years ago who, at least, had some good young prospects) I have seen in a couple of decades and I believe the Indians will cut through the Royals like butter in the numerous games they have left with one another. Hence, it would be best for the A's to take their division and not count upon winning the wild card.

Finally, since I also have been on the receiving end of someone asking to "ban" me, in seeing another poster have to deal with this may I remind members of AN that Blez has set up a committee to enforce community standards. If that committee determines a poster is in violation, I'm certain that said poster will be delivered "a strike" as Blez outlined. Apparently, some posters believe they should take this function on themselves. They remind one of a little kid crying for his mother because he claimed he was being abused by his big brother.

In sum, would those not on the enforcement committee kindly stop playing Community Standards Cops on this board? Blez has already set in motion the appropriate apparatus to handle this issue...

I checked out what the four people that frequent the Halo's Heaven blog had to say about the game last night.

Now, I don't know if the person who posted this was even AT the game last night, but they had this to say:

"Bay Area

Their #1 industry is tourism - more of us there then them."

Now, am I on drugs or are they? While I saw some red, heard cheering after the GS, and saw copious amounts of those horrid thundersticks, I think A's fans (genuine and curious) far outstripped the Angels fans...

I was there last night; it was h@@@@ cold! And doesn't Harden have a woeful record at night, esp during those frigid Sept. eves? Correct me if I am wrong, but Harden was out of his element, the warm and sunny midweek day game, or the hot and humid midwestern midseason. His first innings were rough, but he settled down for the 3-4-5-6. Make the adjustment Rich, whatever that was, and remember last night so you don't go down the same road again.
