Has there been
any discussion of the Yanks' acquisition of Shawn "Eek, it's the 9th inning!" Chacon? He ought to do well in New York.

I think
given the situation (no one available) the Yanks did very well with this trade.  Of course I don't know the MinorLeague players they gave up...were those two pitchers good?

I hope the game lasts 30 innings
Use up the entire bullpen.  Go into New York with no relief and lose every game.  This could be the end of the Angel's reign in the west.  ok, maybe not, but a loss today and a loss tomorrow while we play the tigers could make the gap shrink into nothingness.  Booyah.

League is
the last Jays pitcher.

For the Angels: Gregg is (probably) unavailable - he pitched 63 pitches in 3.1 innings on Tuesday in the 0-8 Angel's loss.  Ha.

And shields may or may not available - 21 pitches in two innings yesterday.

And thanks for the new thread.

Momentum
just completely fell away from the Angels - they take the loss, blow out their entire bullpen (every single man - a starter was warming at the end), and have to play the Yankees against one of the two decent Yankee pitchers (Moose) tomorrow.

I couldn't have ordered a better game for the A's.  And think how pissed Lackey must be!  He pitches beautiful...8 scoreless innings, 9ks...or Yan...3 perfect innings with 3ks, or Peralta - 3 scoreless innings, only one hit...it just goes on and on.

Jay radio
is a very pleasant suprise - I get almost all my baseball and A's fix on gameday audio, and occassionally listen to the opposing team for variety sake - the Jays tonight were a true pleasure, and they have a phone call show similar to Extra Innings that is starting now.  (after all, I can't listen to KNBR...)

The A's announcers are top notch for radio, but I'm glad I can still find other teams with good crews.

Anyone have comments on their favorite radio crews other than the A's?

"Too much talk about Huston Street's ass"

He means, hey did you ever stop to think about Rich Harden's rear, eh? Bobby Crosby's ass? Cupcake's hinder?

All this focus on Huston Street's buttocks is going to drive a wedge into this team. As Kendall said in the press, "I've never been on a team that's had all 25 guys on the same page, all with cute asses."

Think of the good of the team.

A few things that I can recall
The good for ball, bad for ball question was about Dennis Rodman. And she said he was good for ball, since he's a colorful character or something. Then they started talking about Rodman serving coffee at starbucks?? Anyway the gist of her argument was that he was being a hypocrite, talking about female asses [he said, "Hey, I wasn't really saying much about that, just that Serena has a HUGE ass."] but not letting us talk about Huston. Then she said we can enjoy all parts of baseball, including the looks. Maybe he was just tired of arguing, or he knew he was wrong [or he wanted to win back some fans, I dunno] but he called himself a hypocrite and offered to mail her a spring training hat for 'winning' the argument :)

That was me, reztips, on KNBR.
I first complemented Urban on his book. Then I said how much I appreciated AN after being disgusted with other sites filled with ignoramuses such as OAFC. I said the sole problem I had with AN was the incessant "chick talk" which interrupted serious baseball discussions and Urban concurred with me.

I then asked him questions predicated upon interviews with him and BB on AN about possible trades. Urban joked that he was giving far too much love to AN.

I said BB conveyed to Blez that the A's lacked some power hitting and I asked Mychael if he thought the A's might consider acquiring Dunn, Kearns or Huff. Urban said he didn't think the A's would trade for any of the aformementioned players.

I noted that Urban had intimated on AN that like Mark Redmond last year, Joe Kennedy just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the team. Urban said that he indeed didn't believe personality- wise that Kennedy fit and he could see Kennedy traded, although he didn't say when he thought that might happen.

I joined Urbans' "Bad for Ball" schtick by saying that Barbieri, Radnich and Ratto's repetitive anti-A's commentry was "Bad for Baseball." Urban later defended them. But when I said "Baroids was Bad for Baseball" because he was a cheater, Urban joked--asking if we didn't agree that it was just flaxseed oil.

It was fun to call in, give some love to AN, express some critiques, and knock the likes of Baroids, Barbieri, Radnich and Ratto.

Sorry, chick talk fans, but
you don't appear to realize how much you intrude upon and disrupt good baseball discussions by your continuous commentary about various A's player's physiques.

I believe that too many fans take the game too seriously and that fan blogs and sites should be fun. But the chick talk on AN all too often reaches ridiculous proportions.

I realize there was already a diary about this subject, but I don't see any harm with you initiating and having your own diaries about who you think is hot. That way, you would be communicating with one another and not intruding upon discussions focused upon matters other than the objectification of male anatomy.

Isn't that reasonable? I mean no one is suggesting that this subject matter not be discussed on AN...Merely that it appears on a part of the forum where those interested can speak about the subject with one another and not break up lengthy discussions about various other baseball matters with commentary interrupting discussions with those uninterested in conversing about male anatomy.

Thanks for your consideration of this (truly) friendly suggestion...

The problem is
"chick talk", as people refer to it, isn't the only non-baseball topic to arise on AN. It occurs frequently, but plenty of other things get mentioned, particularly in game threads and open threads -- so should those things be separated from 'good baseball discussions' too? And given the fluid nature of conversations, and the number of folks like Nico who have a good sense of humor and like to utilize it, how the hell can we always determine what should be where?

Personally, I find a discussion on Rich Harden's physique to be fun, and as much of a 'good baseball discussion' as Blanton's BABIP, since to me, almost ANYTHING about the game that doesn't involve 'hey, we can trade Marco Scutaro for Manny with the Sox paying the whole salary! They'll totally do it!' is a 'good baseball discussion'.

But it's Blez's definition that counts, and as long as he lets people have fun and free reign over topics, that's about all that matters.

Personally, I find the use of insults about A's players, such as 'ByrnesBrain' to be extremely disruptive to good baseball discussions, and while I'm cheerfully willing to say it (loudly -- my favorite way), Blez allows it, so that's how it is.

Kyli, you don't seem to realize
that when a bevy of women make post after post about male physical "attributes," it's not like single poster commentaries critical of certain players, with or without negative nicknames.

It's a bit selfish of those who focus upon male objectification to not realize how disruptive this is to those who wish to discuss baseball strategy, deals, player's skills, etc.

Why would it be such a disruptive matter for you and your fellow chick talk posters to start your own diaries, daily if you wish, which would enable you to discuss this subject of your choice with those posters also interested in the subject?. This way, you would not intrude upon those who have absolutely no interest in female assessments of various player's "physical attributes."

by Kyli on Jul 29, 2005 9:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, the nature of the blog
at this point is a lot more relaxed than that -- topics specifically devoted to players' appearance rarely exist, the comments arise in conversation because it's the natural place for them to begin. It's awkward to take the punch line of another joke to a different thread, isn't it?

And if "chick talk" is moved, shouldn't ALL off-topic chatter suffer the same? Heck, even discussions of players' wives and ladies' looks appear on here, along with TV shows, etc. If "chick talk" gets moved, it's likely that ALL "off topic" discussion would too -- and in my mind, that'd be a shame.

Maybe I just need to go back and reread some diaries again (it's hard to keep up nowadays with all of them), but it seems like many heavily stats-oriented conversations stay that way.

And I don't think it's impossible for good discussion and chick talk to coexist. A post about Huston does not automatically negate your ability to post about something more serious and get responses to it. Threads and diaries exist for a reason, and I just don't see how the chick talk always hinders that.

Is there a lot of it? At times, sure. But it does seem to be more heavily in picture threads, open threads, and game threads than elsewhere, which are already emotionally-driven spaces. There isn't a limited amount of space on AN or in a particular thread.

I think starting daily diaries COULD in a way be more disruptive, since it would start a trend of having a lot of diaries specifically about it, and could result in pushing more valuable and interesting diaries off the list, which is already a problem.

I think it's a bit selfish to try and define what a "good baseball discussion" and asking us to conform, when our own ideas may be different. When you're talking about what is and isn't good baseball discussion, you're identifying the value of an individual comment and series of comments -- all I'm saying is that we're all guilty of stepping over the line of not producing "good baseball discussion" at times. I'm ALWAYS guilty of it, and you're not exactly a perfect saint either.

Again, Blez's word here is what will make the difference. He hasn't asked it yet, and it's his call.

You go, girl!!
If there are diaries devoted completely to the 'male anatomy,' well, that is when we really have a problem. The 'chick talk' is just a natural part of conversation... I think that if diaries were made just for that sole purpose, they would just end up being completely contrived. We KNOW that it's not the most important part of baseball; that's why there haven't been threads devoted just to said topic.

I guess I could say more, but you've pretty much said it all, and you did a better job than what I could ever imagine doing.

by Melody on Jul 29, 2005 12:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed
So much of it is spontaneous that if it has a set diary, it wouldn't be as much fun. I'm all for the serious baseball talk, to an extent, but there's only so much of it I can take. Baseball is supposed to be fun, and for some of us, that means discussing the players' looks as well as their talents on the field. If the "problem" grows, Blez will know when to curb it, and figure out a way to do so without offending everyone. But for now I'm going to enjoy our freedom to say whatever we want in whatever space we want, even if it does involve a name like "ByrnesBrain" (which I didn't appreciate either).

It's not hard to scroll by a poster you dislike,
baseball girl. It's well-neigh impossible to scroll past post after post of male objectification without losing the thread of genuine baseball discussions.

If you don't like my criticism of a downright facistic baseball site whose leader regularly elbows her way into the press to pose as a leader of A's fan opinion, or my nicknames for players I am critical of, it's easy to ignore me. And I suspect some posters do. No problem.

But when you have the option of starting regularly your own diaries focused upon the male objects of your desires, why not do that rather than subjecting those interested in other baseball matters upon a plethora of posts in which the majority of contributors to this site have little or no interest?

BTW, I am hardly the only one to articulate this objection. Mychael Urban cited it as one of his two objections to what he sees on AN...

I realize there was already a diary about this subject, but I don't see any harm with you initiating and having your own diaries about who leads the league in OBP, ERA, IsoP, etc.  Oh, except that all the cool chick-talk diaries get pushed off the front page.  Anyway, using your own diaries would ensure that you would be communicating with one another and not intruding upon all the important stuff like objectifying the male anatomy.

Is that reasonable?  I mean, no one is suggesting that actual baseball not be discussed on AN... Merely that it appears on a part of the forum where those interested can speak about the subject with one another and not break up the length discussions about Huston's ass with commentary about actual baseball.  Although, truth be told, talk about Huston's ass is all the better when he's actually pitching, so, in that sense, I like actual baseball too (makes Huston's ass look better).

Sorry, couldn't resist.  ;-)

Jason Kendall reminds me of those ballplayers Bugs Bunny used to play against, except not as big --- mrs. gojohn10
