Payton for Bradford deal official
Here's the media release from the A's... A?s Acquire OF Jay Payton From Boston For Chad Bradford OAKLAND, Calif. ? The Oakland A?s today announced the club has acquired outfielder Jay Payton and cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Chad Bradford. Payton was batting .263 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 55 games with Boston before he was designated for assignment on July 7. He was batting .194 over his first 28 games but then hit .333 over his final 27 games starting on May 18. Payton was hitting .292 against left-handed pitching and .230 against right-handers. The 34-year old outfielder played for the New York Mets from 1998-2002, Colorado in 2002 and 2003 and San Diego in 2004. He is a .283 career hitter with 82 home runs and 321 RBI in 770 Major League games. Bradford began the season on the disabled list following March 7 surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back. He began a rehab assignment on June 24 and made a total of nine rehab appearances with Triple-A Sacramento, Single-A Stockton and the A?s affiliate in the Arizona Rookie League. Bradford posted a 4.42 ERA in 68 relief appearances with the A?s last year but held the opposition to a .234 batting average. He pitched four seasons with the A?s from 2001-2004 and was 18-14 with six saves and a 3.34 ERA in 250 relief appearances. The 30-year old right-hander also pitched for the Chicago White Sox from 1998-2000 and is 21-15 with seven saves and a 3.47 ERA in 294 career appearances.

WHY??
Bradford would help us more than Payton, so there has to be some kind of three-way meangerie about to go down.

Can't say I'm happy about this
I'm starting to think that Cruz will be our #5 starter and Saarloos will be the groundball guy out of the pen. Makes much more sense without Chad on the squad.

Keep Payton, Ditch ByrnesBum
I'd say the A's and their fans should open a spot called "Payton's Place." It would be far less scandalous than Byrnes Butcher Shop! ;-)

The A's should keep Peyton...
Otherwise, his career OPS and age tell me that Byrnes is better at the plate.
And being better defensively at a position (LF) that does not reward outstanding defense is a good (and particularly Giant way -- see Snow, J.T.) way to lose ballgames...

Cash we get from bastan with payton?
Bradford's contract in 2005 = $1.4M
So my guess is we probably got ~$1M for the diffrence in 2005 salary's

Trade
However, I don't think Theo Epstein would have a problem w/ the A's sending Payton to the Yankees. In fact, Theo would be pretty happy to see Payton in pinstripes. Better Payton, than say, Adam Dunn. You know the Yankees are going to try hard for Dunn.
Payton is Old, Overpaid, and a team cancer... In fact, he sounds like the perfect Yankee.

Dunn is obviously a much, much
The Yankees trading for Dunn would be similar to the A's going after someone like Pokey Reese (if he weren't hurt).

Yankees
As for Steinbrenner & Co. acquiring Adam Dunn, I don't think it's a stretch. The Yankees are only 2.5 games out of the playoffs. If they turn on the switch (and I think they can and will, and I'm a Yankee Hater), then look out.

Eric Byrnes isn't good
Let's trade them both and stick with an outfield of Kielty-Kotsay-Swisher, and let Cust or Watson or even poor Charles Thomas handle fourth outfielding duties.

So, who needs 33-Year Old Outfielder
Yankees
Astros
Rockies (minus Preston Wilson)
Anyone other teams? Payton is probably going to an NL Team.
I don't think Theo Epstein would have a problem w/ the A's sending Payton to the Yankees. In fact, he would be pretty happy to see Payton in pinstripes. Better Payton, than say, Adam Dunn, or something like that...

enjoy the moment and place your bets
I want to give credit to the people on AN who deduced the Bradford trade a day or two earlier than the big press... and now, let's put our collective bets down and see who can guess the final result.
Me, I'm abstaining. I can't ever figure out who Billy's after next, except for the obvious guys like Grail. But I will contribute this quote from the womanizing bowler in the Simpsons:
To the most beautiful moment in life... Better than a deed, better than a memory, the moment... of anticipation!

Good quote, Apricot
Foolsh, you are always so selective in your defense of ByrnesBrain. Checkout the major diary by Blez articulating the significant disparity over a career between Payton and Bumblin Byrnesey in hitting righties. It's significant, as is Payton's superiority on defense...
