The Alaska dot
you can move to the lower right corner.  I know our AK member is somewhere in the southeast -- Ketchikan, I think.

By the way, I assume you know that US Virgin Islands isn't really a foreign country.

by iglew on Jun 28, 2005 7:22 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for noticing
I pointed that out in the last thread.

Calling the US Virgin Islands a foreign territory is akin to calling Guam, Midway Island or Puerto Rico foreign territory.

Foreign territory=not a part of America, even if it's not a state.

I don't have a place to put a dot, so I put a flag. Perhaps I should separate it from "OTHER COUNTRIES" and make a heading called "U.S. TERRITORIES."

Honolulu ANs
First, thanks  FormerHuntsvilleStar for putting this together.  Stats is fun!

Maybe there ought to be a Hawaii AN meeting.  Of course, we have to find the ONE TIME PER MONTH the As are on TV!!

Alternate Meeting Site
Thanks, as well to Huntsville star.  Maybe this survey can become an ongoing feature of AN?

To the Honolulu folks: the Kaua'i sub-chapter of AN is always willing to host a meeting over here on the Garden Island.  I'll buy the first round (or nine...)

I plan to have it ongoing as AN grows and changes. The link to this thread will be in my signature for a while, so folks who haven't participated or would like to see the results can click on it any time. Every so often (maybe every few months or so or when there's been significant additions or changes), I'll post a new diary about with the latest results.

by oak in nam on Jun 29, 2005 12:05 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Nope...
I used this site as the tool to determine the distances:

http://www.geobytes.com/CityDistanceTool.htm

It said the distance between Oakland and Bangkok is 7,933 miles, so you would be short by 63 miles.

All these calculations are approximate with some chance of error, though. :)

This team is one of the most mathematically-obsessed I've ever seen. It really wouldn't shock me to see if BB had vendors statistically booked.

BB: "Hey, we should look into getting Danny Johnson, that peanut vendor for the Iowa Cubs! His VORV (Value Over Replacement Vendor) is through the roof! We can trade that one chicken strip vendor, Jeremy something or another. I've been telling people, how fast the guy can serve is overrated compared to the highly superior chicken-to-french fry ratio!"

The survey...
...is to represent where ANers currently live, not where they're from originally.

However, I've been taking notes from those who have mentioned where they're from and grew up, which I'll likely incorporate somehow. So I do have you as originally from Nigeria (currently in Philadelphia), and when the time comes, the Nigerian flag will must definitely be there.

Since most of the time you're in Iowa, I should go with that. But if you're in Walnut Creek now (if, say, for summer vacation, I should go with that).

I'll go with Walnut Creek for now, if that's all right with you...

That's cool
WC is my current location/place of residence, so that's fine with me. But if you update this in, say, September, I will sadly no longer be within driving distance (a sane driving distance, that is, unless you count 30 hours as a good one-way trip to a baseball game) of my beloved A's. Nice work on this survey, looks great!

I'm in Berkeley, but i live in Israel, so you could put e down for both. If push comes to shove, i was born and raised in Berkeley....

Since you currently live in Israel...
...I'll mark you down as Israel (the question is, where do you live (i.e., place of residence) right now). But I'll have a note that says you're originally from Berkeley -- I will have something that reflects places of origin soon.

yesss
I'm all for the places of origin survey.
I have faith.

feature request
Any chance of making it so when you "mouse over" the dots it pops up the screen names of the AN members in that city.  I'm, for example, curious about who the other AN member in Eugene, OR is.  But I've seen other people on this thread asking about who the members are in their area.

by LoveDemAs on Jul 4, 2005 4:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

It's doable, but...
It involves mapping each dot on the map and assigning it the message that would pop up when the mouse is over it. Each mapping is done with a line of HTML code. With over 200 dots...it'll add up. And it would take a ton of time.

I may just post a list of all responders and their cities -- one alphabetical by user name, one alphabetical by city.

Also.. what ANer lives in Antioch?
I used to live there and I'm there everyday for school.

Only ONE AN'er in places such as
Antioch?
Daly City?
Piedmont?

Sheez! Should I move to one of those places just to boost the numbers?

We have got to either (a) get more people to answer the survey, (b) tell more people about AN, or (c) convert more people to becoming A's fans.

How could anybody live in the Bay Area and not be an A's fan???

I have faith.

Add another
This AN member hails from Cameron Park, Ca.

I'll put you down as...
...Syracuse for this survey (since you're about to live there), and L.A. for the survey I'm about to start (which is for where you're born/raised).

Fresno
Home of the AAA Grizzlies.  I've gone to several games and have yet to see them win, and these are the future Giants.

Yes, it's gonna be great around here the next few years!

Colorado Springs, CO
Home of the USAF Academy, my current station. Since I move around so much, I don't really have a strong sense of a hometown, thus no home team, so I've become more of a fan of baseball as a whole. But I like the A's for several reasons:
  • I have an appreciation for teams that are run intelligently.
  • They have a front office that doesn't try to blackmail the city for a publicly-funded stadium (yet).
  • The underdog factor of a low-payroll team consistently competing and giving the metaphorical finger to Bud Selig and his whining about lack of competitive balance.
  • There aren't really any unlikeable personalities on the team.
  • I enjoyed Moneyball.
  • AN members' genuine love for their team is manifest and kind of contagious. : )
