Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Money where your mouth is... Blez... Nico?

I got a hundred bucks says Byrnes outhits Kotsay versus righties this year.  I'll give you 2 out of 3...  AVG  OBP  SLG.  Kotsay wins 2 out of 3, I pay you... Byrnes wins 2 out of 3 (regardless of which team he plays for), you pay me...  we on?  If Kotsay is so good, this will be a no-brainer bet for both of you, right?

Eric Byrnes - Offensive and defensive dynamo!

The last four years...
If you look at the last four years (2005 included), multiplied by the three stats you mentioned, we'd have 12 possibilities for Byrnes to have a higher percentage than Kotsay.  And Byrnes has come through...twice (SLG in 2002 and 2003).

2 for 12.  Those are Charles Thomas odds.

Unfortunately
at 110 or whatever he was hitting, Thomas odds would be closer to 1/12!

What happens
If either is traded? I'm starting to think that Foolsh really is Eric Byrnes, and he's just trying to make a quick buck because he knows he's being traded to the launching pad that is Coors Field for Joe Kennedy, while Kotsay will be granted an extension to stay in the pitcher-friendly confines of Oakland...

Has Anyone Noticed......
That Kielty is under 220 vs RHP???

Fact is, that Swisher may end up being the best hitting OF we've got vs. 80% of the pitchers the A's see.

very astute, oaktoon
Swisher and Byrnes will end up the best against righties.  Count on it.

I won't bet money,
and if I did I'd only bet with someone who didn't use baiting tactics, but I will confidently predict Kotsay that wins AVG and OBP and we can see on Oct 2nd who's right.

Make that FIVE in
At $100 a pop you may want to cap the number of bets you take FG22.  Even extremely objective, unbiased analysts such as yourself can be wrong once in a while.

Blez, I'll be spending all my winnings at the AN store: any chance you'll have AN beer coozies available by October?

So lemme get this straight?
You're prepared to lose 500 bucks on a bet where you are the severe underdog? Thats pretty funny, I must say.
My seatbelt is broken. What do you suggest I do?

by Diesel @ Athletics Nation on Jun 24, 2005 1:03 PM PDT reply actions

underdog.... yes
stupid...  no.  Byrnes has already beaten Kotsay two out of the three months that have been played.  Maybe that's why there aren't any more takers than 5 (those who can read stats, including Blez and Nico, won't touch the action, trust me).

where is your guarentee you will pay
can you get a third party to hold the money until october.  I would get in if I, for one second, didn't think you would just disappear come oct if you lose, but I'm sure you will be all over this list if you win, trying to collect from a number of sources across the country.  I'm not trying to slam on your character, you personally would just have more to lose then any other poster.

Also you would probably need to clear up some ground rules, ie what if someone has a season ending injury, do you just take their stats from what they have done to that point.  I'm sure there are 300 other strange things that could happen in which someone would want to back out.  Lay down some rules, make me believe you can pay up and I'll let you know if I'm in.

you ass,
of course i read stats, why do ya think i bet you! i wonder who is/isn't reading the stats?

Reading Stats
vs. Righties

Byrnes
102 ab
.206 avg
.287 obp
.363 slg

Kotsay
208 ab
.260 avg
.316 obp
.389 slg

if PT continues along present trends, Byrnes will finish the year with 230 ab v RH and Kots will have 468. If Kotsay continues to play like he has, Byrnes would have to hit .303, .339, .410 the rest of the way to tie Kotsay in each category. Conversely, if Byrnes continues to play like he has, Kotsay would have to hit .163, .264, .342 to fall to Byrnes' level. Truthfully, though, both sets of numbers are too high, since if Byrnes played that will he would get more PT and if Kotsay played that poorly, he would get less.

The next time I slap a guy's ass, can we all just assume it's because I wish I was a baseball player?

by devo on Jun 24, 2005 1:35 PM PDT reply actions

Isn't the notion
that "if someone doesn't care to make a bet, they must be afraid to" a bit sophomoric? I last heard that tactic in high school, and I ignored it then, too.

I'm confident you'll look foolsh come October, but equally confident there's no way anyone will be able to collect on any bets. 'Tis the magic of the internet, where everyone is honorable until collection time.

Foolish,
you'd better email by Monday morning with official guidelines to which I will respond, or no deal. I don't like betting on something not based around hard rules. :)

But please email me. I want $100.
