well, at least
there would have been a play at the plate.  bottom line is, you have to be able to pick up a ball that is slowly rolling through the outfield grass.

of course crosby was the main culprit, to be sure, and he didn't do much offensively, whereas byrnes came through.

by xbhaskarx on Jun 22, 2005 11:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Incorrect
If Byrnes can't throw out a 42-year-old catcher on a ball hit to left field that he's charging in on, he has no business on a major league baseball field.

by Alien @ Athletics Nation on Jun 22, 2005 11:27 PM PDT reply actions

What was looking like a sweep
Can now turn into a split. All thanks to Ken Macha trying to cut corners by "saving" Duke (when in fact he just ended up wasting him in a useless inning). He could've at least stuck to his plan and not even brought in Duke, but now Duke is probably unavailable tomorrow. This is the problem with Ken Macha. He comes up with these half-baked "plans" that seem good on paper, yet his plan Bs are non-existent, which gets the A's into deep sh*t too often.

by OaktownTribesman on Jun 22, 2005 11:28 PM PDT reply actions

That is a good point
There was no real reason to bring in Justin tonight, just to get one out and the save. You just don't do that. If you want him as your closer, let him work with empty bases. Don't wait until you have to guys on to bring your 'closer' in in the bottom of the ninth.

by Melody on Jun 22, 2005 11:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Ken blew it
He panicked and it cost us Duke for tomorrow. I could understand if Duke was unavailable, but to avoid using him at the start of the 9th, only to have him pitch 1.1 innings after all is pretty stupid, and shows a total lack of adequate planning. Half-assed, is what I call it.

i'm just sad
i even ran into my closet between innings and dug out my signed bobby crosby jersey to get some good mojo... it worked a few times before... it makes me feel so bad when crosby does poorly, i like him a lot, and it's obvious he tries so hard to win, and do well.

also, f*ck eric byrnes. trade his ass for a bag of peanuts and a prospect. he gives back every run he hits off of lefties. every. damn. one.

..the runner was safe ANYWAY!

We almost won today because of Byrnes' triple and clutch double. Blame Bobby Crosby if you're going to blame ANYONE for defense tonight.

I WANNA LIKE BASEBALL AGAIN!

by baseballgirl on Jun 22, 2005 11:33 PM PDT up reply actions

i do blame bobby
but byrnes had a hand in it, also.

byrnes defense in pressure situations seems to completely disintigrate, and while his bat against lefties is really great, i dont know that that alone outweighs what he costs in the field at times.

--Nebraska--

by Ryan Armbrust on Jun 22, 2005 11:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Seriously though..
his arm is terrible. And its Ichiro on 2nd! Charge the ball harder. If that were Kots he would've had Ichiro at the plate.

by capper3 on Jun 22, 2005 11:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Lay off Byrnes
I'm really, really annoyed at the whole love/hate Byrnes gets. Wow. He comes through in the clutch, and everyone praises him. He doesn't do so well, and everyone is all. over. him. In any case, that wasn't a guaranteed play at home plate, and there are many other people to 'blame' if you're into that sort of thing. I don't see anyone saying things about Crosby that everyone is saying about Byrnes.

And for the record, Byrnes was worth two runs tonight.

by Melody on Jun 22, 2005 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions

i know
i realize that Crosby was a large part in us losing, but i'm just upset and since byrnes played a part in the last two runs scored, it's easy to get upset at him. yes, he had a HUGE hit late in the game. i just can't stand his "defense". can he please be a DH? i actually do like him, but i'm so tired of his OF play costing runs. as for the play at the plate, if he would have charged the ball, and made a slightly better throw, kendall seemed to be blocking the plate well, it might have been different. i realize ichiro is fast, but it would have been close. oh well, there's always tomorrow. go a's!

I Agree
... about this being one of the best threads.

I'm glad I got to share the game with you guys ... even thought it turned out wrong ... but just barely

Maybe that's it...
...it's the baseball gods telling us that we are WAY too wrapped up in a team when we sacrifice an entire evening sitting around a TV/radio and computer chatting with people we talk to more than our family and friends about a baseball team.

Nah, even with the loss, this was one of the best threads ever, in my opinion!

hey, on this one, we just lost a close game
some key hits, some great pitching, some lost opportunities and some big errors.

It happens.  all kinds of things could have led to a win, but that's just baseball.  I wouldn't have said this 30 days ago.

our guy crosby just had a bad game in the field. sh...happens.

you are right about Erik's throw.  I also Tivo'd it, and though it was wide to the 1rst base side, no way it could have gotten Ichiro.

it could've if he had charged sooner and thrown
straighter and a bit harder.

could have had the game
in about a billion other ways. A play at home plate is harder to pull off than scoring a run on a sac fly with a runner at third and less than two outs. Cough.
