It's Over

Ding dong, the streak is dead.  The A's ended their three-game skid tonight as well as a scoreless streak that was bordering on absurd.

King Richard was a bit off tonight, but finally the offense came through.  This could be the game where we finally say, that's when the bats came to life.

A couple of things jumped out at me from this game:

  • The A's got a key performance from Eric Chavez.  Yes, the same Eric Chavez who has be demonized here in AN for not "manning up."  Well, he did and this was a key game for him to do it.  His gold glove appeared as well as a key hit early in the game to plate a couple of runs.  He's going to have to continue to do it in the coming weeks, but it's definitely a good start tonight.
  • I don't hate Eric Byrnes.  I really don't.  I've met him and I really love his hustle and respect how hard he works.  I want the guy to do well and be an every day left fielder.  But his fielding continues to be little league.  I'm almost thinking Byrnes should DH against left-handed pitching, especially because his stick came alive tonight.  I love the guy's effort, but he is prone to both bad breaks on balls as well as brain cramps like Bill King said tonight.
  • Keiichi Yabu has a 0.96 ERA.  Justin Duchscherer has an 0.73.  Dotel has a 1.08 ERA.  If the offense comes out of its slumber, this bullpen is ready to help the green and gold win some games.  Regularly.
  • Nick Swisher finally got his first two hits off left-handed pitching.  I'd like to see him in the lineup day in and day out.  He's only going to get better the more he learns.
  • Kendall also had two hits.  If he and Chavy really do wake up, this offense could improve rapidly.  It's not going to rival the Yankees or Red Sox, but it will be much better than what they've shown so far.
  • One other note that's rather annoying.  I was just watching the Best Damn Sports Show (it happened to be on after the Giants game ended - I was rooting against them) and Chris Rose, the host, was interviewing Mark Mulder and he said, "It must be nice to actually be playing in front of fans this year since last season you played in front of what, friends and family?"  He was taking a shot at Oakland fans.  I suggest we let them know we have a voice.  Here is their phone number: 866-839-4328 and if you want to send them an email, here is the link.  I think a couple thousand phone calls and emails might make them think differently.  What a tool.

how about some love for Kielty?
We all bag on him, but he's actually been playing well lately. The A's couldn't have done it without him today.

in fact, you should do seven push ups every time kielty walks and five every time he makes solid contact, so you realize there is a better way to judge hitting performance than batting average.

if you do them everytime Byrnes gets one.  You'll be doing more.

Yeah!
Even when Kielty was hitless, he was hitting the ball hard ... just at 'em balls.

My question is: Why does Byrnes play left and Kielty DH? Bobby is clearly the better outfielder.

I'm with Blez; Byrnes is most valuable as a DH vs. lefites and as a pinch hitter/pinch runner off the bench.

His two hits were great, but the sacrifice was also key (scored runner and moved one over to third). That's the kind of fundamental situational hitting the A's have been lacking lately.

I have never actually seen your show but it came to my attention that you dissed the number of A's fans that attend games.
Well, considering that you work for Fox I am not suprised that you don't let facts get in the way of your statments but the A's ranked 19th in attendance in the majors last year.  This was ahead of many larger cities including Toronto and Chicago (whitesox).
And as for me, I have been to about 50 A's games over the last three season and watched your show a total of zero times.  How do you like them apples?

Also, considering that your network carries A's games you would think taht you would try and promote your product.  I guess not.

my email to the show:
Collectively, the fans of the Oakland A's are extremely frustrated with the comments of Best Damn Sports Show host Chris Rose made, essentially taking a shot at Oakland Fans.

The suggestion that "It must be nice to actually be playing in front of fans this year since last season you played in front of what, friends and family?" to Mark Mulder reveals an incredible bias that is unfair and unexpected from what I previously had considered an unbiased sports news outlet.  But now I am forced to reconsider, and doubt that I will tune in again to your insulting, biased, programming.  Chris Rose clearly doesn't have any conception of baseball and the fans that come with it for non-major market franchises like the A's.  Not all teams can afford Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen, only to pick up Larry Walker midseason on a whim.  Still, fans exist--perhaps more passionate fans than those of teams you will praise like the Cardinals and the Yankees-- and we love our team.

I know I speak for myself and many others when I say I feel hurt by the contents of your programming, and want you to know that on behalf of myself and the thousands of Oakland A's fans, this situation will only be remedied if an apology is released on air.

If Mr. Rose needs more education about Oakland and our fans, he should check out http://www.athleticsnation.com.  Though we might like to be considered "friends and family" of our team, we are a nation standing strong.

What was that? As a season ticket holder, I was offended by the snide remark about playing in front of only family and friends. All you're doing is perpetuating a negative stereotype about the Oakland fan base. No, we don't have the stadium the Giants have, but I'd rather be shoulder to shoulder with real fans than with hedge fund managers while they drink their martinis and surf the Web using the stadium's wireless network. Ill take a 2 hits to 2 K ratio any day. Also, he looked impressively focused and disciplined for at least one of those strikeouts... got behind early but stuck in it with a bunch of foul balls before getting called out looking.  Also, I loved seeing his aggresive slide to prevent the double play, which in retrospect was hugely important in maintaining our momentum in that early inning.  With the exception of the ball he bobbled in the outfield, he is looking mentally tough, for a rookie.  Kielty looks increasingly tough as well.

re Byrnes in LF
Since Blez started the new thread, I'm reposting part of my comment a few minutes ago--it's a slightly different take on WHY the A's need to change their LF plan:

Give Thomas and Kielty the platoon in left for a while, Mach. It sends a message that you have to play the game properly to play for the A's. Byrnes' fundamental lapses wouldn't fly with the Yankees, the Cardinals, the Braves...you get the point. Good teams don't put up with a repeated lack of fundamentals. Let's make a statement to our team, and to the rest of the league, that the A's are a good team.

The only thing I'd argue in your summary, Blezzo, is that I'm just not all that impressed with Yabu from what I've seen. His numbers are a bit inflated by allowing more inherited runners than his own, and by a statistically good mop-up job in Tampa Bay. But I think he's suited to long relief, and would be stretching to handle middle relief or 5th starter responsibility.

You think the WhiteSox will put this one in the "squandered" category? Yikes!

byrnes can be a useful member of this team
sometimes DH against lefties, as blez suggested, especially when durazo isn't hitting well.
he can also pinch hit and pinch run.
and when he starts in LF, thomas can be a defensive replacement (assuming he's better defensively than he has been so far)

i know byrnes fans want him to have the starting LF job locked up, but this makes a lot more sense as it takes advantage of his strengths, and he would still get into many games.

agree with Blez, EXCEPT
Keiichi Yabu has a 0.96 ERA.  Justin Duchscherer has an 0.73.  Dotel has a 1.08 ERA.  If the offense comes out of its slumber, this bullpen is ready to help the green and gold win some games.  Regularly.

I'm not convinced about the bullpen. Yabu let in Rincon's runs tonight, and that should have finished us off. Duke does have the killer curve, but he can't shut people down. Dotel has been looking a lot sharper, but he's not called Heart Attack Dotel for nothing. Cruz shows brilliance and then rolls dungballs. Rincon has lost his edge. Street will be great someday, but he's still up and down.

Basically Calero was the only really solid guy (and I believe he was meant to be the 'real' closer) and his injury has really messed things up.  I'm hoping the bullpen can do league average until either Cruz finds his head or Calero comes back on fire. At least until Meyer comes up supercharged in July.  :)

by Apricot on Apr 26, 2005 11:17 PM PDT reply actions

Fear Mecir?
and of course Mecir has a 1.23 ERA so far with Florida, so there's still a long way to go before the pretenders are separated from the real deal.

by dylan on Apr 27, 2005 1:26 AM PDT up reply actions

agree with this too
ERA is not the best way to measure a reliever's performance.  By baseballprospectus.com metrics, Street, Rincon, and Yabu (in addition to Cruz), are only mediocre so far if inherited runners scored are factored in, with Calero on the shelf and Dotel soldily in the closer role, we still have issues with middle relief.

Zito, Haren, and now Harden because of last night are near the bottom of the league by measures of bullpen support (whereas Blanton has been saved by the pen thusfar).

My story...
Okay, so after really not feeling well this entire week (I went to 2 games this weekend in Anaheim bundled up like it was Chicago), I was listening to XM radio and tonight's A's game. After the 4th inning, we were down 3-0 with nary a run in sight, but we had a healthy start on the DP record.

I signed off AN and went to our Tuesday night church group. I went into the service and didn't take in my phone (online A's updates) or my MyFi XM radio (screen updates on the A's) for maybe the first time ever. I swear it was 3-0 when I tossed all electronic junk in my car and left without them.

We had a speaker tonight from Haiti who had been down there for three months building houses for both orphans and volunteers and it was so interesting that I almost forgot that the A's had moved from no RISP hitting to clearing men off the bases with DPs.

I came out to my car and turned XM back on JUST IN TIME to hear the announcer sign off with, "Final Score: Oakland 9, White Sox 7". After hitting the radio against the side of my car because I thought it was broken, it started to sink in that we actually (a) scored a run (times 9!) and (b) won a game. Then I started thinking more complicated, like did Chavvy hit and did we just beat the best team in baseball?

Then I got home and read the most hilarious 1200+ comments ever about the game and I felt like I was there.

Thanks AN...and I guess God is not as mad at the A's as previously assumed! Perhaps he did not want 10,000 simultaneous heart-attacks from A's fans tonight.

Good win. Well, ugly, ugly win, but we had a beautiful loss on Sunday, and I'll take the "W" anytime.

hey, I followed the game at work through the awful give-back-the-lead inning with the ChiSox up 7-4. I get on Bart. Time passes. I don't check the score. I see some A's fans on Bart, but I don't ask for an update. I get home and reluctantly check the score and... much to my shock, our boys pulled it out!

I think we have it worked out. When the A's fall behind, Apricot has to stop watching, baseballgirl has to talk to an orphanage volunteer, gojohn10 has to do pushups everytime you can see Kielty's clown-fro, and Nico has to stop making puns. Easy as pie.

If thet guy was wearing a Spring Training Jersey and a Backpack (I was studying for a midterm to and from the game on BART) then it was me.

I bought tickets for the 300's, sat in an abandoned little corner and said to myself that if the game got out of hand, I'll start studying.  Hey, criticize me all you want, but I can't fail this midterm and me going to the game was a spur of the moment thing for me.  However I was  too emotionally invested into the game to study when the Chisox we up by three and the A's were doing the whole RISP thing.  I couldn't study.

I decided to buy a soda and get an upgrade...to about 228 at about the top of the fourth because that's where I sat for the rest of the game andI remeber being a part of the Standing O after the first run.

OK. Here's my email:
Chris Rose,
"It must be nice to actually be playing in front of fans this year since last season you played in front of what, friends and family?"

Chris, you know nothing about Bay Area baseball, do you?  The Oakland A's have one of the most dedicated fan bases in all of sports.  The crowds may be not be as big as others, but we are far more loyal and knowledgable than say fans of the S.F Giants or the The Angels Angels of Anaheim.  We aren't bandwagoners.  And, we respect all our players, even the ex-Athletics (except Giambi) through thick and thin.  Have you seen our huge banners that we even hold for players that were only on our team for half the season (Carlos Pena)?  In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the average I.Q of an A's fan eclipses those of most of the other teams.  We have to be smart in order to understand the moves that Billy Beane continuously makes.
Next time you decide to take a cheap shot at the Oakland A's fans, go to a game first and talk to some of us.  You'll find that we're not left overs from Raider Nation.  You'll see that we are only interested in our team and the game we love, not some fancy stadium (although one would be nice).  We don't care about the view of the Bay.  The only view we care about is that of home plate.
And if you want a real cheap shot, why don't you ask John Kruk how he feels broadcasting in front of a REAL national audience with ESPN now that he's ditched FOX Sports.

My email to The Best Damn SS...
Okay, seriously? The Oakland Athletics have one of the most knowledgeable fan bases in all of professional sports. They also draw an absurd amount of fans for their ballpark in Oakland considering that (a) they play in a FOOTBALL stadium (b) they have a consistently low payroll that does not allow them to keep superstar players and (c) they are the red-headed step-child of the Bay Area, with the majority of the 'casual fans' prefering the Giants stadium as a baseball outing.

Despite this, the Oakland A's, over the last 5 years, have posted an extremely high winning percentage, even competing directly with markets such as Los Angeles, Boston and New York. Their fans love the team, and most of us can name the entire 25 man roster, 40 man roster, and the next 50 of their AAA, AA, A, and draft pick players for the next five years.

The question to Mulder on your show today was unfair, and quite frankly, untrue. Huge amounts of people who come to the ballparks just to wave monkeys, or to see Barry Bonds hit a ball in the water do not equate a good fan base. The Oakland A's have some of the best fans in any professional sport.

Don't believe me? Visit Athletics Nation at www.athleticsnation.com to meet at least 10,000 of us, from all over the world. Read interviews with Billy Beane, Mychael Urban, Nick Swisher, and Huston Street. In fact, why don't you invite the site's creator to be on your show? His blog has become extremely popular with MLB and he'd love to take on anyone in a baseball debate.

Just had to write in. Thanks for reading. Go A's!

Overthrowing the cutoff.
Byrnes has done this nearly every single time, that I've been able to see.  Well, either he overthrows the cutoff or he misses completely.  It's really starting to annoy me, especially now that his fielding seems to have improbably gotten worse.

You know it's bad when you see the rookie Swisher hit the cutoff man while sitting on his backside, and then you immediately think of how Byrnes would've screwed up the throw even if he was standing up.

by Inquisitor on Apr 27, 2005 1:26 AM PDT up reply actions

getting worse in the field? He's never been great on D, but my impression is that he's regressing.

by OaklandSi on Apr 27, 2005 6:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree
I'm starting to wonder if he has a sore arm or something.  His throws have nothing on them, he's struggling at the plate.  Could he have gotten hurt in Winter Ball?  He seems like exactly the kind of guy who'd get hurt, not tell anyone, and play through it as is gets worse.

You might be onto something
I watched Byrnes a lot last year and I don't remember his fielding being this bad.  He has never been smooth, but he usually got the ball or threw it to where it was supposed to go, more or less.

That play in Anaheim where he dove for the ball and missed it entirely was bad judgment though.

up and down game tonight...
...good to see the hitting coming around.  Kielty is actually getting hits (yes, I was a basher...and he's proving me wrong the last few games), and Chavez had a good night.  If he keeps it going, that would definately be a plus (even though I stand by my Tejada was better comments I've had for the last 5 years).  Chavez hitting would be a good spark.  I also saw Kotsay give the team a pep talk in the dugout before the rally.  That's exactly what the A's need, a leader to give those pep talks and get everyone up and going!  Maybe kotsay can take control of this team.  It can only help.

Oh, and I sent an e-mail to BDSSP talking about how badass the A's fans are.  Hopefully the number of responses they get will show them we are not a group to be triffled with!

Kotsay
Maybe we're overlooking the REAL most important thing that happened last night.

According to press reports about the game, after letting the ChiSox go up 7-4 (and right after nailing Everett at the plate) Mark Kotsay apparently came into the dugout and ripped everybody a new one.

Then the A's went out and scored three to tie it.

So let's applaud the guys who came through tonight... but the biggest hero might well be Kotsay - not for his bat or his glove or his arm, but his mouth.

My e-mail to Rosey...
Mr. Rose,

I will try to keep this brief as I am sure Im not the only fan writing you. Your comments to Mark the other night were inaccurate and unintelligent. Our average attendance from 2001-2004 was around 26,400 ( courtesy of ESPN). We have outdrawn the champion Marlins, and are close to outdrawing Colorado, Cinci, and Atlanta. Not to mention the teams with those new ballparks we did outdraw like Pitt, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, Tampa, and Milwaukee. Next time you want to take a shot at Oakland fans I suggest you educate yourself first. Perhaps you should come out to a game and see some of the most loyal die hard fans around, for yourself. I doubt you will, your probably afraid, because you actually believe all those things your media buddies write about us. Since this is more than likely the case, go to www.athleticsnation.com and see for yourself. You really should apologize to the fans and organization for your comments, and lack of intelligence.

A small point
When Kotsay threw the runner out at home, it was partly due to Kendall being positioned properly and blocking the plate. I then flipped the channel over to the Giant's game and watched Ramon Hernandez, as he did so many times for the A's, step in front of the plate, completely out of position to block it, to recieve a throw trying to nail a runner at home. It's no secret that Ramon goes out of his way to avoid contact at the plate at the expense of giving up a run(and an out!).

Yet another reason to love Kendall.

Stop this insidousness NOW
As a former long time Expos fan, I can tell you that these kinds of snarky media comments about attendance can snowball into a CW that has a massively adverse impact on a franchise.  The A's already have to put up with nonsensical "they don't have a commitment to winning" comments because of the string of trades of high profile players (as if the only way to win is to pay high-priced veterans more than their market value 100% of the time), but that's just ignorance.  This attendance comment is worse, because it's just wrong.  The A's attendance, while not stratospheric, is certainly at a legitimate major league level.

Not every city is like St. Louis, who worship baseball as civic religion, so it's unfair to make that comparison.  But more importantly, the A's have a legit MLB crowd the vast majority of the time, and in reality are like 3/4 of the teams in MLB in that they get big crowds on weekends and smaller crowds during the week.

In your emails to Fox (which you should send hourly to jam their inboxes if possible), I'd concentrate on the facts around the quantity of attendance.  Comments on the quality of the fans, while entirely accurate in this case, are irrelevant.  Believe someone who's gotten the worst of this media treatment - nobody cares if the fans are good or bad, casual or diehard.  They'll only make comments about bodies that are or are not in seats.

I don't know if the 5,000 Expos fans who kept showing up from 2000 on could be any more diehard, but that certainly didn't get them very far.  Here in A's Country, we have quantity AND quality - the best of both worlds - and we can't let them forget it.

Hmm...
My favorite quote on the Kotsay play:

"It was like, 'Step aside, son. I'm gonna show you how to make this play,'" said outfield coach Brad Fischer. "There were some things going on in the outfield that inning and nobody was very happy about it, so I think Mark just said to everyone, 'I'm gonna take charge.'"

"If I would have tried to catch that ball, he'd have killed me," Swisher said. "There was no way in the world he wasn't taking that ball, and when Mark Kotsay calls you off, you better get out of the way, because if you don't, he'll run you over."

At least!!!   Man, this guy knows the game and takes charge.  About a week ago, where was Mr. Kotsay.....coming from the ondeck circle telling/pointing to Swish to get down at homeplate.  This guy is text book fundamentals.  The team accross the bay may have a outfielder who can hit 50 plus bombs a year but in no way can he compare to the player Mark Kotsay is.  The only word I can think of is complete.  He has a competive desire and I get the feeling Kendal does too though, that it seems like the other players may not have.  It's like they are sleepwalking, hopefully after this game they have awaken.  When the A's finnaly get their new stadium, I hope Mark is patrolling Centerfield for us at that time.

Good Diary, With Exceptions
Excellent analysis, Bleez, with the following exceptions: I agree with Nico that the jury is still out on Yabu. He is known for his fine control, but so far in MLB, it sometimes seems to abandon him.

As far as Chris Rose's comment, there's a reason why personalities on national sports shows--both on ESPN and FoxSports--have castigated Oakland for its appalling lack of support for its team. Despite enjoying a contender for five straight years, East Bay fan attendance has been pathetic. And you don't have to live in the Bay Area to recognize the paucity of fans who usually leave the Coli largely a sea of green empty seats...

So I e-mailed Rose:
"Dear Chris,

Thanks for noticing the absurd attendance at A's home games. You have articulated what only A's fanatics fail to recognize--that Oakland is not a genuine MLB venue. You are right-on!"

by reztips on Apr 27, 2005 8:56 AM PDT reply actions

mount what?
easy to say when have somewhere near 250 thousand freakin seats to fill up and a crappy economy.  giants aint exactly fillin the stands what with roid boy out.  perhaps thats not truly a genuine MLB venue either.

A Six Team American League?
Is that what you're advocating?

Because by your reasoning, Oakland, and any team with worse attendance, doesn't deserve a Major League franchise.  So, with 2,201,516 fans last year, Oakland was 7th out of the 14 American League Teams.  That means only six teams would be left in your scheme.

Hell, why not get rid of 'em all except the Yankees and the Red Sox?

You're really Bud Selig, aren't you?

by Mission1929 on Apr 27, 2005 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions

don't confuse me with facts
about Oakland actually drawing reasonably good attendance despite playing in a football stadium, suffering from 10 years of ownership that couldn't/wouldn't market the team, being in a region where there are lots of professional sports teams and other distractions.

My mind is made up: Oakland is no good for baseball.

Whatever. that's not been the experience of many.

Did Anyone Notice?
I was at the game lsat night with my father who said (he's been watching the A's since 1939):

This is the worst (played) game that I have ever seen.

Anyhow - Swisher, in the 8th, had a GREAT at bat.  He was down 0-2 and then worked the count to 3-2 by fouling off five pitches in between the balls.  Of course, he was called out looking.

And, Juan Uribe got lifted after taking a 2-0 pitch that was nowhere near him.  How did he get hurt while just standing there?

yeah,
my dad and I couldn't figure out why Uribe came out either. Is it possible to get hurt when the count is 2-0?
And Swisher's at bat was awesome. He made Marte work hard!

Did Anyone Notice? (Try #2)
Whoops - don't post while talking to a co-worker about whether lunch is free today or not.

Anyhow, I meant to say that my father said that it was the worst played game that he had ever seen.

CHAvy hit but still has NO HEART!!!!
Who had to step up in the club house. That is right Kotsay.
(per SF chron)
"It got pretty heated,'' said Chavez "The game was ugly at that point, (Kotsay) just got mad. We scored three runs (after that), take that for what it's worth.''

Chavy needs to be a leader I hope he is learning from Kotsay.

Welcome to the game Chavy and keep it up.

by novaoakland on Apr 27, 2005 10:16 AM PDT reply actions

Heart=leadership? I don't think so.
Why don't you understand this. Chavvy doesn't need to be a leader. He just needs to hit and play gold glove defense. Why do you think he has to be the leader? What does it matter if Kotsay is the leader? Heart is not the same as leadership. Stop pulling this phrase out of your ass, me and the rest of AN are tired of seeing it.

Not the same
But he has neither.

And if he cared about winning he would make himself a leader because the team needs that.

Lew Wolff sighting
I was at the game in Sec. 122, row 25.  What a crazy game!   I could see Lew in the front row in the section ahead of us, right behind the A's dugout.  Anyways, I noticed he was out there till the end,  and not one cell phone call.  He seemed to be watching the game the whole time. I think it's cool that he sits out amongst us fans and not in the luxury box.  I don't know how often he goes to the games but he should be out there all the time, if they are going to win when he's there.  Maybe the A's felt they had to get it together in front of the big boss.

he took bp..
..before the game, they showed it on tv. wash was out there throwing to him. i like the new owner.

Is he that big right handed bat we have been looking for?

AN sweatshirt for Lew?
Maybe Lew needs a comp AN shirt, with his name on it?  At the game, he was in a long black coat--too formal for a baseball game.  Wouldn't it be cool if he wore an AN shirt to the next game?  I'm sure he must know about this site, maybe he even reads it.  If there's anyone that would relate to "In Billy We Trust", it would be him--backing it up with his checkbook!  And then Mr. Fisher could cross-promote with Gap shirts with the same logo.  Royalties to Blez, of course.

Full Moon...
...maybe it wasnt a full moon, but the Wolf was out there. Anyone watch the game on TV last night? Anyone see the clip of Wash throwing BP to Wolf? That was awesome! Seems like the 'ol guy was saying, "hey I can still hit, how 'bout you boys!?

Maybe thats what are players need to do -
abstain from sex so they can use the rest of their brains to learn about trajectory and other physics type stuff to hit the ball better.  HA!  Don't think Kotsay will participate.

Mr. Wolf
I liked his enthusiasm at the end of the game when he pumped his fist when Dotel punched out Harris. That's the kinda owner I like.

My e-mail... Sorry, I could not resist
"Just wanted to let Chris Rose know that the A's do have fans other than Mulder's friends and family.  Perhaps not enough fans make it out to all the games, but in a place like the Bay Area, I do not blame them.  It's too bad he was traded to a team in eastern Missouri, where the main attractions seem to be going to Busch Stadium and the International Bowling Hall of Fame."

Stepping up
Kotsay always shows up to play, but last night's play was spectacular! And kudos to him for getting things going in the dugout and to Harden for not backing down...
Wild, wacky game...wish I had taped it...and
I kept thinking how much fun?! AN was having chatting about it...but, being there is always the best.
